    Back in the last century, you made Chex mix at home. Chex cereal comes in rice, corn, and wheat. You mix those 3 together with nuts, small pretzels, and other small crunchy things you like. In your bowl, then toss with seasonings of your choice, and bake for just a few minutes to get browned. That's it. Now you can buy it pre-made in a bag, but it used to be a standard for cocktail parties in a home, every family knew how to make it.

    What do you call seats in a stadium? We'd call them "bleachers," as in, "He hit the baseball into the bleachers!" But more typically, if you say "bleachers," it's the wooden (in basketball courts) or metal (outside for football/baseball) used in high school sports. If you see a movie of teens in the '80s, and the entire student body is sitting in seats in gym, they're sitting on wooden bleachers (which collapse back into themselves if you need the room).

    And you got derecho exactly right. It's a weather front with straightline winds. The front can be miles and miles wide, and all along it, the winds are super strong, blowing in the direction the front is moving.

    • @pndb2016
      @pndb2016 2 дня назад +5

      I can say from personal experience that a derecho is a terrifying thing to see coming your way. I was coming home from work late back in 2012, and as I neared the house, I could see just a ruler-straight line of black clouds off to the north/northwest. Made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. As soon I as I got home we started securing everything we could, and the winds came shortly after. I remember watching our front door bowing inward as each wind gust pressed against it. The winds were so strong they forced rainwater between the weather sealing and our door, making a small puddle in our foyer. I fully expected the door to break open at any moment.
      Trees down everywhere, power was restored to our house a full week later. People were driving to a local shopping mall that had power in order to charge their cell phones.

      They're as damaging as an F1/F2 tornado can be. We had a couple hit in Wisconsin in consecutive years in the mid to late 1990s and it was scary as all get out. I'd lived in my house at the time for more than 20 years and went through many tornado warnings and never had any damage, but a derecho that came through in 1998 scared the BLEEP out of me! I was lucky. I only had a power line taken down by a huge branch that blew off one of my trees in the backyard. Other people had very large trees entirely toppled over in their yard and over their houses. Back then the weather reports didn't call them derechos, they were just called straight line winds. In many places in Wisconsin they topped 100 mph.

    I live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and during the derecho we had a few years back car windows busted, houses lost their roofs, took out more then half of the city’s canopy, took out power lines, a lot of us were without power for weeks! Farms were destroyed crops, buildings and silos! It was scary and sad but, cool thing to watch(I love storms, I’m the one standing outside while the tornado warnings are going off. Just to see if I can see it)!!

    Nor’easter is a collision of weather fronts that creates extremely dangerous winter weather conditions for the Northeastern US. You won’t hear about a nor’easter in summer. That would be a hurricane, which is of tropical origins.

    • @BTinSF
      @BTinSF 3 дня назад +1

      Actually, it's not called a nor-easter because they typically occur in the Northeastern US but because the most intense wind direction is from the northeast due to the fact that if you sit a low pressure core off the coast with its counter-clockwise wind rotation, as the system approaches the wind direction ashore will be from the northeast. As the system passes, the wind will shift to the north and then northwest as it dies away.

    "Bleachers" are common on all sports fields, from public parks, through elementary school to high school fields, not just college sports fields. The space between the seating planks (open to cut construction costs and to provide ventilation during hot weather) is the reason for the grade-school joke, "Where's Seymour Butz? Under the bleachers!"

    Bleacher seats are common in every major stadium in the United States - they're the "cheap seats" if you want to put it that way, especially for baseball and football games in outdoor and under a movable dome stadiums. In more local playing fields, outdoor bleachers are the standard form of seating.

    Bell peppers = spicy? Clearly you've never had anything spicier than a peanut, unless you call all peppers "bell peppers" in which case; jalapenos, habaneros, carolina reapers, trinidad moruga scorpion peppers, etc. would like to tell you that they have way more capsaicin in them causing them to measure higher on the scoville scale than bell peppers; also nor'easter is a shortened way of sayinf "northeastern"

    Lol, no, it's not the bell peppers that make it spicy. You call those paprikas in the UK. When you cook them off, they release a vegetal sweetness similar to carrots. What makes gumbo spicy is the cayenne and chili powder added to it, and in some cases, Guinea grain, a hot pepper native to western Africa that some people have manage to cultivate in raised gardens in the bayou.

    A Nor'easter comes down from the Northeast with hurricane force winds, snow ice, and thunder. Its taken very seriously in New York, and other states along the coast. Most K-12 public school districts also have at least bleachers on the sports fields at high schools, and they're not uncommon at middle school fields, either.
    The word "cornhole" mostly refers to the bean-bag game, these days, but it started out as a slang term for anal sex ("cornholing" someone).
    The game is a much less expensive version of the game, "Horseshoes."
    Chex Mix is a nicely savory and flavorful snack, but it's really dry and crumbly.
    If you eat it with an open hole in your gums, it's *really difficult* to get it all out.
    Bell Peppers aren't spicy; they're aromatic and retain a crispy texture even when cooked.
    The sausage and hot sauce makes gumbo spicy, and it's basically the Cajun version of Bubble & Squeak -- it's all the leftovers thrown into a pot with the holy trinity, rice, and whatever meat you have sitting around that you need to use before it goes bad. 😁
    If you want to see how bad a Nor'easter can be, watch the film "The Perfect Storm," starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg.
    In America, Easter is Kristin Chenoweth. 😊

    Derecho is an inland hurricane. The 2020 Derecho that Lawrence talked about, my city was the hardest hit in the storm path. We lost 60% of the trees in our city. We had no power for 2 1/2 weeks in the middle of August. Chainsaws and generators were sold out everywhere. We had no warning to prepare for this storm. Almost every house in my city suffered damage, there are still some properties 4 years later that are still needing repair. Our local airport recorded winds of 145 mph. It was awful and I hope it never happens again, but let me tell you, the support from every person was amazing, no one was left to handle this on their own. It took the city 2 1/2 years to finish the removal of all the downed trees. There is a great video out there done by one of the metrologist from our city.

    Nor’Easter is a “gale from the northeast.” An otherwise normal storm that travels across,the area going east…however…when it gets out over the ocean it whips around, picks up lots of moisture, and comes back like a whiplash…crashing into the coast coming down from the northeast. Yes,..kind of like a Hurricane. In the cold weather it is usually a devastating blizzard.

    Lewis, he's underselling bleachers. They're not only found in college stadiums, but the professional and high school levels as well.
    If you want to pronounce javelina in good Spanish, thereby amazing your friends and family, it's hah-veh-LEE-nuh, and derecho = deh-RAY-choh. You may have noticed that Laurence mispronounced syllable #3 as 'show'. This is a Spanish word, but it's the French who pronounce 'ch' as 'sh'. No charge!😀
    Related to airboats are swamp buggies, which are also fun.
    Because there's the syllable "nor-" at the beginning, Nor'easter has absolutely no connection with Easter. It, rather, is a wind coming out of the northeast--a direction, not a holiday.

  • @Estranged180
    @Estranged180 2 дня назад

    Having lived through several Nor'Easters, I will tell you this.
    It's a hurricane off the coastline of the northeastern states. Happens only in the winter. Tons upon tons of snow, wind, sometimes lightning (which is incredibly rare in winter), sleet, freezing rain (another joy up here), and STILL doesn't stop the world.
    Now, freezing rain. It's rain, that is a liquid as it falls, that freezes on contact with any surface. Trees (that might break due to the weight), cars, sidewalks, roads... you, if you happen to get caught in it. Sleet, however, is a little different. It's rain, that falls, but freezes on it's way down. Hits everything like a small pellet. Some would call it 'snow that bounces'.

    "Nor'easter" comes from "Northeast." It's a cyclonic storm that often skirts the east coast of the United States during the winter as it travels Northeast. The winds aren't generally strong enough for it to be considered a hurricane (there's not enough warmth in the Northern Atlantic during the winter to generate that kind of energy). Often it's big effect is a really large snowfall in the Northeastern part of the country.

  • @johncooper4637

    A nor'easter occurs only in the north eastern US. When a hurricane (you HAVE heard of them, haven't you?) gets out of tropical waters and travels up the east coast it becomes a nor'easter with damaging surf, high tides and strong winds.
    Cajun food often contains Louisiana hot sauce like Tabasco. Bell peppers only give you gas.

    "Nor'easter" is inspired by centuries-old British sailing lingo/slang. "North" and "south" were often pronounced without their "-th" when referring to compass headings. "Nor'east", "sou'west", etc, were daily vernacular aboard old sailing ships.
    "Nor'easter" simply translates to "northeaster", meaning "from the northeast", and referring to the abnormal direction from which the wind is coming. Our prevailing winds in the US *generally* come out of the west. Our east coast states generally get their wind coming off the continent and out to sea. A nor'easter, due to its counterclockwise rotation (it's essentially a cold-weather typhoon), brings warmer ocean air ashore into colder, drier continental air and causes blizzard conditions. If the onshore air is warm enough, it's heavy, hurricane-like rains instead of a blizzard. But in either case, the winds are strong and unforgiving. These storms can do a lot of damage when they occur.
