Brits are scared of the simplest, most kid-friendly foods 😂. It's essentially creamy potato soup with a few little bits of clam meat in it.
And onions. There's always onions in it. Some parsley. It's very yummy and filling on a cold day.
@@jenniferhanses It's been awhile since I've had clam chowder but I don't remember onions being in it? I'm sure parsley would be good in it but I've never seen that.
I almost fell out of my chair when he dipped the cracker in the soup. I never saw anything so stupid. I am shocked that they don't put crackers in soup?
New England clam chowder is a creamy potato soup with clams. Manhattan clam chowder is tomato based.
Long Island is both.
All can be made with oyster mushrooms
For a allergin free try
New England Clam Chowder is commonly made with milk, butter, potatoes, salt pork, onion, and clams
Rhode Island clam chowder has a clear broth, no cream.
In the US, the rule for food is, ignore the looks and concentrate on the taste. Only the taste matters...
.... hobo stew
No one in the UK can seriously eat Shepherd's Pie and then complain that any other food on earth looks unappetizing.
Seriously though if you're in the UK can't you just order some clam chowder online?
Get Campbell's Chunky New England Clam Chowder. It's the best canned version.
Don't get that heart healthy version. It's horrible. It tastes like chalk.
Funny enough, restaurants are the same way. Small, hole in the wall places sometimes make the best food in town. While the place with flashy neon signs and mascot gimmicks are some of the worst.
@@scrappypirate2268 Bob's Burger Syndrome
Funny how they thought the oyster crackers were for dipping in the soups. You just dump them into the soup and mix them in. Just adds another texture to the soup.
You don't dip Oyster Crackers. They are eaten like crutons. You just sprinkle them over the top.
It's either that or get a pack of saltines and bust them up into the soup. Same idea.
The oyster crackers are the perfect size so you don't need to bust them up.
It's like they aren't familiar with the concept of crackers. I almost fell out of my chair when he dipped that little cracker in the soup. Is it possible that only Americans and Canadians put crackers in soup?
Sadly, I think it shows how truly inept Brings are when it comes to food.
I mean Sausage Gravy. British LOVE Sausage, but in over a millennia, . . . it never occurred to any of them to make a gravy out of the drippings?
@@PriscillaV1964 Sausage gravy is the holy grail in the southern states, the rest of the country only knows what it is from movies. There's a reason The Brits didn't make it, it's nasty to make gravy out of grease. There's no juice from the meat just grease, the gravy is made from milk, flour, salt and a lot of black pepper with a few chunks of sausage for flavor. It tastes disgusting. It's sort of gritting and slimy at the same time. It's like drinking thick warm milk. It gives me the shivers just thinking about how awful it is.
I still don't understand why other parts of the world with massive seacoasts don't eat seafood! Clam chowder is wonderful. Super creamy, rich, a milk or cream and potato base in the soup, onion, maybe bacon bits, and then the clams. Yummm! Remember - you didn't like the LOOK of biscuits and gray either. And they've never had oyster crackers? Hahaha. Clam chowder is originally a New England thing - but everybody loves it. Here, you can buy clam chowder in a can from the soup companies. It's not as good as fresh, homemade, but not bad. Gumbo - Louisiana dish. Rich broth, nice smoky spice, shrimp/seafood and probably some smoked sausage, with tomato and vegetables.
Oyster crackers are just little saltine crackers basically. No fish in them 😊. Wonderful sprinkled on soups.
The reason is because the ocean is a big place. Not all sea life is indiginous to the same coasts. In england locally sourced seafood does exist, its just different species than the american NE
@crunkers_ Okay, but I still don't understand. Are you saying that the seafood/fish off the coast of Britain is not tasty? I know the North Sea has some glorious fish and seafood.
Yeah, I don't do canned clam chowder. It is like night and day the difference in canned and homemade. There are some decent canned soups but never had a good canned chowder. Same with gumbo but to a lesser extent. I have had a decent, not great, gumbo from a can.
Especially shrimp. Shrimp is delicious. Get it already shelled of course. There's no point to that head-on shrimp.
I feel bad for people who are allergic to shrimp. They want to eat shrimp but they're not allowed.
Scampi is a really good way to start. It's shrimp cooked in butter and garlic. So good. Another is a shrimp party platter. They sell them everywhere in the USA. You just gotta make sure it's fresh. Any seafood place with fried shrimp would work too. They must have that in the UK.
The only thing about shrimp is there's an iodine taste that builds up over time. So if you try to eat several pounds of shrimp, you start to get sick of it around 3 pounds in. You just don't want it anymore. One pound - no problem. Three pounds - why are they starting to taste like medicine?
I am from New Orleans and I lived in Massachusetts. Boston is the place for clam chowder and New Orleans is the place for gumbo . bubba is a character from forest gump movie and forest makes the bubba Gump shrimp co to honor his fallen friend .
One of best movies ever made
I have to agree with you on that however, I do like the clam chowder made by good restaurants in the Seattle area. Perhaps it’s the difference in the type of clams that are available on each coast. Seattle uses little neck clams are are quite small.
Depending on the restaurant, you will also be served with a side of either port wine or cream sherry. You can choose how much you want to add and also home made butter will also be served.
My all time favorite movie. I've watched it at least 100 times over the last 30 yrs. It was the 1st movie I ever saw that not only lived up to the hype, but exceeded it.
Yeah, find the oldest bldg with the biggest parking lot. On a back street in New Orleans, or Biloxi. Best thing you ever put in your mouth.
Between Boston and Monterrey, I’d say the west coast does a better chowder tbh. I’ve had both multiple times and they’re great, but the flavor difference
The closest thing I can think of to clam chowder that you would know is it’s almost like a potato soup. It’s a similar consistency but it has clams in it. It also tastes better
Be aware that clams can be chewy and so can overcooked shrimp. New England clam chowder is a creamy potato soup, Manhattan Clam Chowder is a more black pepper tomato based soup, and gumbo is a hodgepodge soup with a bit of spice and all sorts of seafood meats in it. For the most part the textures of all are good and all are fantastic on a cold winter day. 👽🗿👽🗿👽
Good call. Dry cream sherry added near the end is something that balances out the clam taste, essential if you try to make it at home. It really isn't very hard or expensive to make.
The closest thing that I could think of would be like a lobster bisque...
@@arich9326 Bisque does not have any potatoes tho, which matters. They cannot be too smushy or too hard; really a Goldilocks thing that is hard to nail.
@@arich9326 he said he doesn’t like seafood, so I highly doubt he’s had that
Hi mate, I'm from Louisiana, and there are a lot of different types of gumbo. I like a good seafood gumbo, but if you don't like seafood you can have chicken and sausage gumbo, or almost any combination of meat and vegetables. Gumbo is basically a stew. You can put okra in it too, in fact the word "gumbo" means okra. You usually serve gumbo over cooked rice. I don't usually make my gumbo too spicy, and each person can add Tabasco or other hot sauce to taste.
You can get Chicken sausage gumbo. You don't have to get seafood . It is so good. I would recommend trying.
That's what I always cook. Some of my kids don't eat seafood and granddaughter is allergic. Sausage makes it really tasty.
True, the essential ingredient in Gumbo is the Okra, . . . the recipe gets kinda "Stone Soup" from there. 😉
I make my gumbo generally with chicken and andouille (essentially hot sausage). Sometimes I add the seafood, but that’s for “fancy” meals. 😂
Cracking me up dipping one oyster cracker at a time…pour them in the chowder and eat WITH it.
That definitely had me laughing 😅😅
I laughed out loud. I don't know why they never asked the servers what is the proper way to eat things. Especially when it came to condiments and sauces.
@@MarkM58 I didn't know crackers in soup needed an instruction. Brits have had soup before. I assume they've put crackers in soup before. It's such a normal thing.
“A bowl of food” the funniest explanation I’ve heard of gumbo😭😭
Pretty accurate, though!
But accurate! and yet still so hard to perfect.
Gumbo is the soup that makes you work harder than a soup has any right to.
Ingredients: food :P
4 center-cut bacon strips
2 celery ribs, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
3 small potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 cup water
1 bottle (8 ounces) clam juice
3 teaspoons reduced-sodium chicken bouillon granules
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups fat-free half-and-half, divided
2 cans (6-1/2 ounces each) chopped clams, undrained
the perfect clam shelter a recipe
I have never put water in my clam chowder when making it! Also, I have never seen a recipe with fat-free half and half... That's why you put half and half in it for the fat and rich creaminess.
I think that's sacrilege LOL
You forgot salt!
In case Brits don't have half and half, it is half milk and half heavy cream. So if they don't sell half and half as a product at UK grocery stores, just combine the same amount of milk and heavy cream.
@@garycamara9955All that boullion? No salt needed! I’d use chicken stock and a dash of sea salt (only if needed).
I'm from Georgia and I don't believe in anything Gumbo, Jambalya, Beignets, etc. outside of Louisiana🤷🏾♀ Only exception is if someone from there is the cook, otherwise why waste the money. Lewis the only reason why you don't like seafood is because you've been eating it in the UK🤣🤣 Come on across the pond and get yourself right!
100% Agree!!! Trust me, Honey it's not the same.
Americans love their seafood, and lots of places serve it done right. Also, most grocery stores have a variety of seafood for people to make it at home.
please. these people eat kidney pies& haggis. They pour canned beans on dry toast.
i both agree with you and disagree with you. im american and i do not like seafood whatsoever, but i went to london and got fish n chips from a super famous fish n chip place and it was worse than any fish n chips ive had in the states LOL
also the chips, or fries, were nasty
Agreed. They are so scared to try anything no wonder they can't cook food.
There are 2 types. Onion, celery, potatoes, diced carrots, cream, and clams and Old Bay seasoning. For New England Clam Chowder. Manhattan clam chowder is tomato based.
I like a simple New England Clam Chowder that doesn’t have onion, celery, or carrots in it. Just clams, potatoes, and seasonings. Yum
@@brucew7062 I'm in Boston. It often has bacon in it.
Much prefer the Manhattan style.
I hate the Manhattan style, I'm a New Englander and I can't do anything but our style.
@@tonyleverett6917 I love bacon and that would be interesting and confusing…you would have to make sure if you were chewing bacon or clam. 😒
Clams, potato, milk, spices, butter, half& half cream/milk, sometimes bacon
I'll be right over.
@Simbecile👍 I right with you😉😂
Salt pork, not bacon, is a required ingredient in chowdah! I'm more of a fish chowder gal; I prefer my clams steamed with broth and melted butter.
@@lindajane8962 Bacon >>>>> salt pork
I’m shocked you’ve never had shrimp. It’s the best of all. Where you been all your life?
You don't like seafood because you've haven't had it properly cooked. There are hundreds of ways to cook seafood well and people in the US are great at doing it well.
OK Lewis. Start Googling. Clams are Mollusks and they live in two connected shells. Shrimp are crustaceans whose skeleton is a shell.
Neither are fish. Fish are aquatic vertebrate animals that swim with fins and breath through gills.
It’s like you guys don’t want to touch biscuits and gravy until you try it. Then, you can’t get enough of it. ❤
There's a Mexican restaurant that makes the most disgusting looking black beans you ever saw. It took me years to get my wife to try them.
They she couldn't ever order from them without getting those black beans.
There's nothing like a hot bowl of clam chowder on a cold day. 🤤🤤
Brunswick Stew too.
@4:35 That's a New England clam chowder there. Its a cream based soup with a bacon roux base usually, probably a good bit of butter. Potatoes, Onions, Chopped clams, maybe a bit of stock. Very hearty warming comfort type soup/stew in the North East USA. Its not too seafoody
Clam chowder was something I grew up on as a kid in the SF bay area and it consist of butter and flour to make the roux and you add either milk, half and half cream, or heavy cream to the roux to make the soup thick.
The other ingredients in clam chowder are: Clams, clam-juice, carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes, salt, pepper, and dry bay-leaves, you boil the ingredients in the clam-juice until soft then add the roux in small batches to thicken it to the desired consistancy. You can add bacon-bits as an option to the soup if you desire.
The clam chowder is something you would make on a cold rainy day for dinner and it goes well with bread especially sour-dough bread. Oyster crackers are good but they are meant to be mixed in with the chowder to sop-up the excess liquid in the soup.
you do know that gumbo is an african word that means okra.greetings from louisiana ⚜️
Correct . Not even people here in Nola know that . #504
Exactly from the West African language called Bambara. There word is actually written as gombo.
Yup, when I saw Okra in the fridge, . . . Dad was making Gumbo.
I live in the burbs of NYC and went to a specialty supermarket near me (Stew Leonard's) and they were giving out samples of New England Clam Chowder. I thought, it looks kinda gross, but after looking at the ingredients and since it was free, I tried it. OMG. I was blown away. So much flavor in this sea of cream. It was so comforting. It was like a warm hug on a cold day. It should since it was made with tons of butter and cream, salt and fat! It did not taste particularly like seafood. I don't know if this is the way authentic chowder should taste, but it was incredibly, surprisingly, delicious.
Btw, you could probably easily make the chowder at home with a good online recipe. I'm surprised since Brit's like their fish & chips so much and it is drizzly and cool there much of the time, that New England Clam Chowder isn't a staple there.
Gumbo is trickier. There are probably hundreds of recipes, but I couldn't tell you what it really authentically tastes like. Without visiting Louisiana or a gulf state, I'm not sure I'd know what I was shooting for, other than a spicy shrimp & rice soup.
Anyway, I'd be interested to see you try making the chowdah in a video. Could be a fun video idea!
Who wants Lewis to react to forest gump? One of the best movies ever!
It's too American. He would never understand it!
@@joehackney1376yeah, I agree. He wouldn't get it.
Absolutely he needs to do it. I hope a Patrion supporter can make it happen. He needs to see this film.
after Forest Gump I vote for Castaway for 2nd movie reactions
Is his name Lewis I never knew that
Yes, clam chowder IS that good!I don't like clams, and Manhattan clam chowder is ok. BUT I LOVE New England clam chowder.😋
1:04 don’t worry if there’s “ no coke” in the glass of ice. The wait-staff will simply continue to bring more coke until you tell them to stop. 😂
Clam chowder is so great! Its yummy! Granted I'm from Massachusetts so we love it!
Gotta be New England Clam Chowder though. I have never like Manhattan Clam Chowder. God bless New Englanders for giving us the good stuff.
@@brucew7062 Absolutely always has to be New England clam chowder. I have never tried any other kind of clam chowder either. Lol
New England clam chowder is the best! Come to Boston and have it here. Sooo good. Its like potatoe soup with clams,❤
Gumbo is also made with chicken and sausage. Super good! 🤗
Shrimp is wonderful!! Both the items they chose are lovely!! Stop saying you don't like something you haven't even tried!!! That's what toddlers say!!
When you come to the U.S.A., there will be so, so many different kinds of foods you will try. Afterwards, you will have a much larger knowledge of a wide variety of food options and will be less inclined to reject foods on the way it looks. You'll have a much more sophisticated palate. To refuse to try foods because of the way it "looks", is just as crazy as judging a piece of art by the way it tastes. Right now, your knowledge of foods is SO LIMITED. There's obviously a whole world of food out there waiting for you.
I had a friend who would not try Chinese food or pizza because of the way they looked. Then he got a job at a home design studio and the owner, on 2 separate occasions, treated her staff to pizza and Chinese food. He didn't want to insult his boss, so he forced himself to eat them. He was SOOOO HAPPY he did. He LOVED them!!! Think of all the enjoyment he would've missed out on during the course of his life!
Note: Chowders are a kind of soup. There are 2 kinds of Clam Chowders. "Boston Clam Chowder" (Cream based & white) & "Manhattan Clam Chowder (more like a traditional soup and reddish in color). Boston Clam Chowder is the one most people think of when you talk about Clam Chowder. As far as Oyster crackers go, always dump the whole little bag into the Chowder or soup. You can 5hen either let them just float on top or mix them in. They just add a little crunch. Yum.
In the wonderful, much loved movie, "Forrest Gump", Forrest & his friend, Bubba, open up a restaurant named "Bubba Gump's". That's where the name for this restaurant chain got it's name. (It starred Tom Hanks)
New England Clam Chowder is a cream based stew with potatoes, onions, celery and clam meat (sometimes bacon bits).
The Manhattan version is basically the same but substitute a tomato base instead of the cream.
Describing the taste to you would be like describing Blue to a blind man.
Bubba Gump Shrimp is from the movie Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks.
Clam Chowder is soooo good! Its like biscuits and gravy in the way that its white and freaks out Brits...until the first bite. I promise you Lewis, you will love both. New England Clam Chowder is the cream based white one, Manhattan Clam Chowder is tomato based, and not as good.
First, there are two clam chowders. Manhattan clam chowder is a red sauce that's thin. New England clam chowder(white sauce) is a combination of butter and flour to make a roue, and then add milk to it. Then potatoes cubed, optional diced onions, seasonings and diced clams. I like them both. As for the gumbo, shrimp is a main ingredient.
New England Clam Chowder is very good. You got to try it. Not the can stuff, but from somewhere it's made from scratch. Chowder made in Massachusetts (milk based) is different from Rhode Island (which is more broth like). Manhattan Clam Chowder is tomato based.
Rhode Island chowder is pretty darn good, too.
Clam chowder (New England Style like this) is usually Potatoes, Clams, Bacon, Onion, Garlic, salt and pepper clam broth and cream
Not in Vermont, NE clam chowder has no bacon and garlic.
Clam chowder is a thickened milk based soup with bits of clams and potatoes in it, along with tiny celery pieces, and spices like garlic, salt, pepper. It's delicious with fresh crunchy bread dipped in it on a cold winter's night.
I can’t believe the British people don’t have clam chowder! They are basically an island 😂
Classic, Creamy New England Clam Chowder
Ingredient Notes
Clams - Fresh clams are best if you can get them. Because they will be chopped into small pieces, you can use the large chowder clams, cherrystones, top necks, middle necks, or little neck clams. If you can't get fresh clams, use canned chopped clams instead. You'll need about 6 lbs of whole fresh clams to get 1 ½ cups of meat or three 6.5-ounce cans.
Clam juice - Use the leftover clam broth from steaming fresh clams, or bottled clam juice if working with canned clams, plus the juice from the cans.
Bacon - Salt pork is the more traditional pork fat used in an authentic New England clam chowder recipe, but bacon is easier to find in grocery stores and I actually like it better. The bacon drippings add flavor and body to the stock, which gives it incredible depth and complexity, while the cooked bacon makes an excellent crunchy garnish.
Flour - Use all-purpose flour. If making a gluten-free clam chowder, use a gluten-free 1:1 replacement. For an extra creamy soup, you can thicken it further with either flour or cornstarch slurry.
Potatoes - I like red potatoes, but you can also use russet potatoes or Yukon gold potatoes. Peeled or unpeeled - whatever your preference.
Heavy cream - Heavy whipping cream is what makes a creamy New England clam chowder. Don't substitute for a lighter cream or whole milk - it makes a difference.
Herbs - Fresh thyme, fresh parsley, and bay leaves. You can substitute dried, but fresh is best.
If you eat haddock and white fish you will love clam chowder. It’s perfect dish for your miserable weather in the UK.
The classic ingredients consist of clams, clam broth, cream, potatoes, onions, and bacon (or salt pork). It is sometimes referred to as a white clam chowder (to differentiate it from the tomato-based red clam chowders).
Clam chowder has potatoes, bacon, clams, cream, onion, butter salt, black pepper. The potatoes should thicken it. Flour would not be my option. Gumbo has that New Orleans spice mix, which doesn't taste like curry, but like curry is a unique mix of spices. Louisianans I've met are generally generous with sharing their flavors too.
Clam Chowder. Think a thick, creamy, buttery, potato soup "peppered" with little bits of clam. The oyster crackers are like puffed up saltines in the shape of small shells. Clam chowder is perfect for winter days. ❤😊
Lewis, regarding the oyster crackers you don’t usually dip them like that. If you want oyster crackers, which are optional for the chowder, you just put them in the bowl with the soup. They’re really not for dipping, although I understand why they did that.
Restaurants put full glasses of ice because it takes up more volume thus less drink is in the glass. Also some drinks (like sodas) are already chilled (because 43* F is the temperature that the soda retains the most carbon dioxide making it taste best) so there's no need for ice. But other drinks (like tea) isn't chilled so it does need ice. But in order to get more drink you can specify 'easy Ice's which means only half the amount...
And you can order no ice.
White clam chowder is a cream (dairy) based soup with potatoes (sometimes with corn and/or carrots) and clams . Restaurants like to serve it on Fridays.
The clam chowder that's white is New England clam chowder and the red one is Manhattan clam chowder and is tomato based. Both are very good if made right, the New England is the most popular. Gumbo is also tomato based and has different types of seafood in it plus sausage.
Clam chowder is my favorite soup. Just like biscuits and gravy, don't judge it until you try it! I believe you'll love both of them.
Clam Chowder is a cream based soup with potatoes, spices, and the main ingredient in it is CLAMS! lol
but Gumbo comes in many different varieties like chicken gumbo, chicken & sausage gumbo, chicken, sausage, and shrimp gumbo, duck gumbo, shrimp gumbo, and seafood gumbo (mixed seafood, crab, shrimp, crawfish, etc) as for the heat it can be mild, medium or hot depending on the cook and where you get it, but usually mild.
get your PO box back and we can send you some Gumbo mix that you can make at home!
In the 80's & early 90's restaurants in the United States would often leave a huge pitcher of soda on the table and fill all the cups with ice to the brim.
both of these soups/stews are mostly served during cold months because they are so warm and comforting. chowder is mostly served in the northern states and gumbo in the south. there are seafood-free versions of each. chicken corn chowder is really good with diced potatoes and lots of cheese. we mostly make chicken & sausage gumbo but you can literally make gumbo out of anything, including just veggies.
Clam chowder is made with butter, milk and/or cream, clams, potatoes, and sometimes bacon. Other ingredients may be added.
Clam chowder comes from Massachusetts and consists of clams of course, milk and cream, potatoes. Some put chopped bacon, minced celery and carrots... And if it's done right you can't stop eating it!
My mom used to make the best. Clam chowder...
Clam chowder is hands down one of my favorite soups. Today is one of our first cool days of Fall. Now i want some clam chowder.
You would like clam chowder. If you eat cod and haddock, you won’t have a problem with Clams because they don’t have a strong fishy taste.
Clam chowder has clams, potatoes, bacon, onion, celery, and a decent whack of black pepper. There's actually a lot of people who "don't like seasfood" that love clam chowder. It's pretty damn good.
Most commercial or restaurant clam chowder is mostly potatoes in a vaguely clam-flavoured clumpy cream soup. You really have to make it at home. And strew oyster crackers (or Pepperidge Farm Parmesan Goldfish) all over the top. Splash on some hot sauce.
[BTW, there are no oysters in oyster crackers.]
Hey Lewis about the ice thing we definitely like our ice, even in the WINTER! However, I have to say that over here in Summer, it does make sense because it's much hotter here than in the UK. Imagine it's very hot outside, you're overheated, and somebody gives you an ice cold drink. Oh man, nothing more appreciated.
Lewis, buddy, clam chowder is so good! Clam chowder has potatoes, veggies, cream, chopped up clams and some people put bacon in it. It's a thick hearty soup.
Boiled shrimp put on ice to cool with cocktail sauce is just the best. You must try.
New England Clam Chowder is chopped clams popatoes clam juice, & cram and a few other ingredients cooked down until its thick n creamy. Oh, it's so good!
Gumbo has andoullie sausage, shrimp onions, bell peppers, celery, flour, butter, file (prounounced FEE lay) its dried ground sassafrass leaves some people also add okra and serve it with rice. The chowder is english or Portuguese, and the gumbo has roots in Arcadian, Indian and African. The Arcadians were forced out of Canada by the British. They made their way down to the bayous of what is now Louisiana and the indians eventually help bastardize Arcadian into Cajun, and now you have cajun food.
there is also a lesser known Monterey style, which is when the New England is made with heavy cream (not milk) and garlic added with the veggies. the best place serves it in a sourdough garlic bread bowl.
chowders are a potato based soups brother (which is why they are generally white) clam chowder is probably the most popular but any seafood, meat, or poultry can be used and sweet corn is also popular
There are two primary types of clam chowder: New England style and Manhattan style. New England style is the most popular, known for its heavy cream base.

Potatoes
Flour
Oil
Black pepper

In answer to your question, Lewis, gumbo doesn't have to have seafood in it. There's numerous different gumbo recipes that omit seafood in favor of other substitutes such as wild game meats like venison or duck or even Alligator
Potatoes, celery, onions, bacon, clams, clam juice or seafood stock, heavy cream, a white roux, herbs and spices.
Gumbo was made with whatever fish you couldn't sell. "To Me", it's not Gumbo without 2 species of fish, crab meat, okra, and "file' powder".
Gumbo isn't all seafood. There's other meats you can use. Particularly game meat, meat from hunted animals.
The white clam chowder is called New England, Manhattan style is tomato based, it’s reddish.
Chowder is a thick soup prepared with milk or cream, a roux as a base, then items are added. Clam chowder, corn chowder, potatos soup, etc. Chowders are chunky, where a bisque is smooth, where the ingredients are pureed in a blender. Gumbo is a spicy stew and doesn't have to have seafood, it can be made with sausage or chicken.
Clam chowder is top tier, along with wild rice soup.
Agreed!
Dude, clam chowder is good out of a can. If you make it from scratch... to die for.
Clam chowder is a new England must have. It’s a favorite. One seafood place. Puts it on French fries. That is also very good.
Clam chowder typically includes the following ingredients:
Clams: The main ingredient in clam chowder
Thickening agent: Flour, potatoes, or cornstarch can be used to thicken the chowder. A roux is made by combining equal parts flour and fat.
milk and/or cream. Probably some black pepper.
Adding flour or cornstarch is a cop-out. Good chowder is thick with clams and potatoes and should still have a creamy consistency, says this New England girl.
New England clam chowder has clams, potatoes and celery. Made with butter and milk/ half and half/ cream and clam juice in a bottle, salt and black pepper . Almost forgot there's flour added to the butter
And you can add oyster crackers and parsley to top.
I make clam chowder every summer. It has bacon, onions, celery, potatoes minced or chopped clams, clam juice (made from steaming fresh in the shell clams and straining the clams flavor infused liquid)some flour to thicken the broth which makes it a chowder and there's also cream in it. The cream makes it New England clam chowder. Rhode Island clam chowder has a clear broth and no cream and New York clam chowder has a redish broth because it has some tomatoes in it instead of the cream.
Clam Chowder varies in recipes but out of all of those recipes they share these same ingredients. Clams, Flour, butter, salt, pepper, sour cream, and cilantro (coriander is what u would call it in UK). Most Clam chowder can be easily be described as a type Alfredo sauce type but with clams. More on the buttery, savory flavor rather than the cheesy flavor. Hope this info helps.
Clam Chowder
Ingredients
2 cups cubed potatoes
1 cup diced carrots
1 cup diced celery
1 cup minced onion
3 (6.5 ounce) cans minced clams, drained with juice reserved
water to cover
¾ cup butter
¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 quart half-and-half cream
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1 ½ teaspoons salt
ground black pepper to taste
Directions
Place potatoes, carrots, celery, and onion into a large skillet; pour in clam juice and add enough water to cover. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until vegetables are tender.
Meanwhile, melt butter in a large, heavy saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Whisk in cream and stir constantly until thick and smooth. Stir in vegetable mixture with any juices until just heated through.
Stir in clams just before serving. If they cook too much they get tough. When clams are heated through, stir in vinegar and season with salt and pepper.
Clam chowder has bits of clam in it, along with potatoes cut up in tiny cubes in a cream sauce with seasonings. To me it is like a very good creamy potato soup very delicious
There’s seafood gumbo or chicken and sausage gumbo. I wouldn’t order gumbo for anywhere but Louisiana, maybe Mississippi. But no where else. It won’t taste like actual gumbo.
Very few places have authentic gumbo outside louisiana. However I've had good gumbo in texas and had bad gumbo in louisiana.
I hate seafood but I will eat the hell out of some chicken or sausage (andoulli) gumbo.
Red beans and rice with Andoulli sausage is pretty killer too!
@@ik7578 Hell yeah!!! 👍🏼
@ik7578 OMG yes.
Gumbo recipe

Add the holy Trinity
1cup onion diced
1 cup celery diced
1 cup green and red bell pepper diced
Saute for 2-3 minutes
Add 1 cup flour (shake in)
Add 2 clove garlic minced
Add 1lb andouily sausage (polish if you have to) cut into medallion slices brown the sausage
1 Tbs herbs de provence
1 tspn cayenne pepper
2 Tbs creole seasoning
8 cups chicken stock
Simmer for about 30 minutes
Add 2lb roasted chicken shredded
Simmer 5 minutes
Add a lot of peppers (i mean a lot) like habanero, Tabasco, jalapeno if you're weak, but heat add heat.
Let that cook until you feel your lips burn when you taste it
Add some good wild shrimp for 3 minutes
Serve over white rice.
Don't pass judgement until you try it. Clam Chowder is just onion, potato, cream, clam broth, and clams, with salt and pepper. Most people like it, some do not.
Clam chowder can be made with a variety of ingredients, including:
Clams or a mixture of clams and cockles
Bacon, pancetta, or streaky bacon
Onion
Thyme
Bay leaf
Flour
Milk
Double cream
Potatoes
Parsley
They’re DIPPING oyster crackers! They’re so small, you put them into the chowder and eat.
Recipe I use
6 strips thick-cut bacon, can sub salt pork
2 tablespoons butter
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 ribs celery, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon hot sauce, or ½ tsp tabasco sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup flour
1 cup chicken broth
3 cups Half and Half
8 oz. clam juice
1 chicken bouillon cube
1 bay leaf
1 ¼ lbs. potatoes, see notes
3 (6.5 oz. cans) chopped clams, juices reserved
Fresh parsley & Freshly cracked pepper to top
Note: we are big people so we do the entire pound of bacon and since you like a kick….franks red hot sauce as you go (not too spicy but a good add!)
Wrong, Lewis. You have NO idea how good New England Clam Chowder is. It's made with chopped hard shell clams, clam broth, diced potatoes, chopped onions, salt pork or bacon trimmings, pepper and milk or cream. There's also a clear broth Rhode Island version that's made with similar ingredients, but omits the milk or cream.
Shrimp should NEVER be "squishy"; properly cooked shrimp is firm.
Clam Chowder - diced clams, diced onions, diced celery, diced bacon, a little clam base, a little chicken base (my secret ingredient), diced and peeled potatoes, roux made with flour and butter, heavy cream, salt, pepper, pinch of garlic, and I like adding some fresh scallops. That is most of it. I make a really good chowder...
I stocked up on bacon this week, just so I could make clam chowder this weekend.
Clam chowder is very much like a creamy potato stew. With clams and maybe extra onions. Gumbo is a Cajon stew. It does not have to be seafood. It is also made with chicken and sausage. And sometimes with game meat. It is usually spicy. And served over rice. The oyster crackers are usually just poured into the chowder. Like croutons.
As a single man Clam Chowder is actually my favorite canned soup.
I don't care for much seafood either, but I love a bowl of new England clam chowder on a cold day. Seafood gumbo is usually way too fishy for me.
Clams are so damn good 😂 Americans been eating em since the natives showed em first winter!
It's like a milky cream with potato and bacon and onions and then clams, so it has a creamy savory flavor to it. Sort of like imagine a seafood tasting loaded baked potato, but as a soup. Didn't you get a can of it in a big box of American food way back when?
Yes both Clam Chowder and Gumbo have seafood in them. There are other types of chowder that don't have seafood. Clam chowder is delish and it doesn't taste fishy, which is what you probably think it taste like. Clam Chowder is a milk/cream based soup with diced potatoes, salt pork, onions, butter, clams, salt, pepper, fresh thyme, fresh parsley and bay leaves. They were suppose to put the oyster crackers on top of the chowder.
Lewis, not only do we get free refills, you can change your drink in most places from any soft drink to iced tea with no additional charge. I also like a lot of ice in my drinks so they stay icy cold. That wouldn't be the case if we didn't get free refills.
Gumbo is traditionally made of anything which "flies, swims, walks, or crawls." But common versions have crawfish, sausage, chicken, mussels, shrimp, catch of the day, or any combination, very commonly with okra as a thickener. Cajun alligator gumbo is a popular tourist attraction, but down South, roadkill gumbo is probably just as popular.
Clam chowder is fantastic. it’s not very fishy at all if you don’t care for seafood. I’ve had east coast and west coast chowder. it rarely disappoints. gumbo is also delicious
