Omg, Daniel- That flashback to when you did martial arts as a kid reminded me of my few months in Jiu-Jitsu. I have ASD and as an 8-year-old kid, I tended to be uncooperative and reactive, I'd tend to cry whenever I was physically uncomfortable. Jiu-Jitsu required me to bend awkwardly, so I'd express my discomfort as I did. The instructor would call me a crybaby and have me stand facing a corner just about every class. What Steven is talking about is Social conditioning. Most people arent aware about how or what they think, feel or believe in is influenced by the environment around them and what is considered the status quo. Steven finds it interesting cuz he experienced it first hand but it truly is something most people arent aware of cuz they dont experience that culture shock. In my philosophy class we called it a "lens". You have to imagine how other people from different backgrounds might see and interpret the same thing/situation.. So lets say we take a poem and we talk about how i a student might see it (a students lens) vs how an english major or a shakespearean historian might see it (seeing it through the lens of an english major, etc). Steven had his lens but he realized with his extended family that there are more lenses to see the world through so he is curious of the boundaries/capabilites of lenses. Its really fascinating and it takes a huge social awareness both internally and externally to recongize something like this.

I totally was waiting for someone else to confirm my theory about broken datasets. I'm somebody who was raised in Pokrovsk, Ukraine (yes the one where the wars are happening) until 12 then picked up and thrown into Seattle, WA. First day in school I'm on the bus -- some dude comes up and slaps me on top of the head. Now, I'm being careful because it's a new country so I get up, walk towards the dude in question and very carefully slap him in a very similar manner, with surgically precise force. I don't consider myself a fighter or anything but until this point I was indoctrinated by everyone: parents, teachers, classmates, everybody -- if somebody attacks you you HAVE TO fight back. At the same time, I learned very unpleasant lessons of being unnecessarily cruel towards your enemy. So I slapped him back. Wasn't even thinking about not doing that. The next day everybody FREAKED OUT. But in a very unsettling way. The principal freaked out, the bus driver freaked out, everybody was talking about this it seemed like.
Wait, as a russian I am so confused: what did they think you were supposed to do? When someone slaps you, you're supposed to do nothing? And what about the one who attacked you first, it's normal for them to do it but not to fight back with equal strength? That's so weird

These new podcast style videos of Daniel’s are turning into some of my favourite on RUclips. I am just enjoying everything about the 2 that I have seen so far. How did I not even know that Steven He was Irish?! He spent a chunk of his childhood in Ireland and still has a bit of the accent, so yes, he is definitely one of us! I’m looking forward to seeing who is next up for “Daniel’s Dilemmas”!! Please keep making these, and feel free to make them as long as you like! I have been watching some 3.5 hour podcasts lately, just saying! ☺️🙏🏼
I know this is off topic but I just came from one of your AITA videos and I wanted to share mine where people would actually see and maybe respond. As a junior in highschool I lived in an area with trash public schools. There were some charter schools in the area that pulled a lot of the students with parental support and talent. Which only added to the public schools being trash. I attended the public school but my sister who was a freshman got into the preforming arts charter school as a trumpet player. My school was really old and the marching band was stuck in the past. They were doing the same 20+ year old routine that they did when my mom had competed against them as a silk captain in highschool. While most schools’ band fronts changed to color guard my school still had poms, twirlers, and silks. Even though it was outdated it was crazy popular, everyone wanted to be a band front. They didn’t even allow freshman to try out. It took a week of practice and then you auditioned. My friend and I didn’t make it as a sophomore but I made it as a junior. I was so excited to be a silk. My sister joined her schools marching band. Her school stole all the musically talented students in the school district. So her marching band sounded really good. Her band had color guard. No one wanted to join their color guard though and they had to beg people to sign up. On the other hand our band sounded pretty bad. Not only did they lack talent but the instruments were super old. Her marching band loved to rag on ours. I didn’t mind though, it wasn’t like she was coming after the silks and it was true, our band didn’t sound great. To be fair, when we played against their team we would make fun of their color guard. My sister caught wind of this and said I wasn’t allowed to make fun of them because they were a part of her band. So it was making fun of her team. I was like “ok but then you have to stop making fun of my band.” Her argument was that my band suuuucked but hers didn’t so I couldn’t make fun of her band. I was like you can decide if we are or aren’t allowed to make fun of each others schools. She thought she was right and would get our mom involved if I ever said anything about her band. My mom would defend her band and not say either of us were right. She would yell at me to drop it if I went on about how it wasn’t fair, sister loyalty should go both ways and she was being hypocritical. But even now I still think I was right, even though I could never get anyone to say it because they didn't want to take sides. Teasing their color guard only when we competed against them is a little different then the way she would talk about my school’s band. It was like a regular talking point for her and her band friends to make fun of my school’s band. She also asked if she could wear my band uniform to school on Halloween. I know she wanted to go as a “silk from my talentless dumb school’s band” which is making fun of my specific team, not just her rival band. I think that was uncool, like we are sisters and she knows how hard I worked to get on the team. Also that could’ve gotten me in trouble. This is old drama but I have had similar drama with her more recently that would be too long to type out (even longer than this). She is non-stop drama. I’m over it, it is just who she is. I’ve always wanted to share a AITA though and I just remembered this. Anyway thanks for reading. So AITA?
Nah from the way u described it, which sure could be “biased” to ur perspective, it’s pretty clear that there was an unfair advantage at her school and she used that to make fun. Sure, ideally neither of u would make any bad comments ab either schools band, but it seems that she was punching down tbf
