There's exactly one single hinge, then a swivel.
What would've worked better is if the mini-figure was based on TRANSMETAL Optimus Primal. It was THAT design that was directly upgraded into the Optimal Optimus form, it was THAT design that had the hoverboard mode, and it was THAT design had that a partially brown robot mode which also matches the colour of the original Optimal Optimus's backpack.
They wanted to homage all three in one toy.
Exactly!!! Ive been saying this too. Transmetal had the right colors (almost the orange to brown, and the blue would have matched OO's shoulders anf calfs) and he had the right basic body shape in bot mode. (Kind of square)
@@Getwright- there is no orange on the original Transmetal Optimus Primal. He's tan and indigo with some brown in robot mode. Your description sounds more like the Punch Attack figure from Beast Machines.

I'm honestly surprised by this toy's potential. It's multiple modes may not look all that different, but the sheer amount of functionality they translate to makes this one of the most versatile Leader-class toys and as a result may offer the most fun to people not recognizing Optimal Optimus and just buying a toy for toying.
Oh how I long for a Beast Wars toyline revival. I’ll never love a new line the same, but Beast Wars and Beast Machines (even the bad ones) were always so cool and so creative.

Scott Lester completely agree. . . Never really cared for cars and jets, i want me something with limbs and an organic feel. Closest thing weve had was the movie line dinobots, even the PotP dinobots have that horrible blockiness to them.

@@leviroch I have a friend who said as much as he enjoyed Beast Wars, he thinks the idea of turning into organic looking animals is inherently flawed because the disguise aspect doesn't work anymore. Since Waspinator was the size of a human and Megatron was a tiny T. rex, everyone knows who they are already.
I said that's fine but no one cares, they just want a toy that turns from a robot into something else because that alone is enough of an excuse. Diaclone and Microchange didn't make up a disguise excuse, they were just robots that served double duty.
I love how you can tell that they designed this to be StarSaber first: Deluxe robot turns into spaceship shape, Deluxe spaceship combines to form bigger space craft in a similar way the G1 toy did, and if you turn Optimal Optimus around the deluxe figure combines like StarSaber would.

Seeing Primal holding the gun on his thumb hit me like a truck lol
The thing I'm most impressed with is that on the box art they are posed well.
That Matrix of Leadership evokes how it looked in Beast Wars (right down to the sculpting). The blue and the jewel(?) in the middle are meant to evoke Prime's spark.
The figure looks pretty cool, maybe not as cool as BEAST GORIRA, it is probably more realistically priced. plus you get 2 incarnations of Primal and a homage to his Transmetal hover board mode. Plus, Optimal Optimus has an ankle pivot. That's the single biggest upgrade over the original, which I still have.
This was one of the few figures I really enjoyed in the Beast Wars series, I am happy to see his inclusion. He needs a little work but over all I am rather pleased with the amazing head sculpts.

A cool detail you missed out - the stickers on the side of Primal's "skateboard/space truck" mode look very similiar to the stripes on the G1 Optimus' trailer. Gotta admit, that's a cool touch.

I believe the “matrix” is g1 prime’s spark as seen in the animated beast wars cartoon, where he absorbs prime’s spark and becomes optimal.

The perfect effect figure is 3 to 4 times more expensive, so it should probably be at least a little bit better.

This kinda feels like Hasbro is trying to put the least amount of effort into a figure to see how many people would still buy it simply for nostalgia.
I don't think it's the least amount of effort for money, I think that Warden just wants Optimal Optimus to flop so that they can justify that Beast Wars won't sell and so they won't have to make more Beast Wars figures
Everyone's complaining that it's not like Hasbro, and tbh, I feel like that's just what the current design team was hoping for. We all know that Warden hates Beast Wars so it wouldn't surprise me if they did such an off job with this guy so they could say "Oh, Primal didn't sell well so no more Beast Wars figures should be made because they don't make money". Think the same thing may have happened to poor old Predaking... That said I'll still be picking both of these guys up
I was having the same thought. Predaking might just be a consequence of poor planning around the Titan Class budget, though. I can't imagine they'd shaft the G1 Beasts as much as the Beast Wars cast.
Chocoboba Fett well let's not forget optimus primal got the worst time to get a new figure considering what the gimmick for it is which would of been significantly better for star saber...
My reasoning for saying that they're in the same boat is because Hasbro might have realized that the Titan Class was a bit much and decided that they might need to get rid of it
I think it's more because the cost of production isn't the same as it was back then, and keeping with the line-wide gimmick of Leader Class figures having combining armor is why some corners had to be cut.

It looks like you can unpin Optimus Primal from that backpack. You'd end up with a perfectly serviceable generation Optimal Optimus with a bonus "action master" Optimus Primal.

Well, DNA Design is releasing an upgrade kit for Optimal Optimus that'll give him the ground mode, better guns and a set of swords. Plus a bigger wingspan if that's something you're interested in

Optimal Optimus doesn't have metallic indigo, and the original Optimus Primal's colors match up better with the backpack piece of the original Optimal Optimus toy which as dark grey.
Actually i just checked my Optimal Optimus and apparently the original gorilla head was even more orange.

This figure is awesome. It pays homage to everything Optimal Primus. The color of his first look; the flying skateboard of Transmetal, and finally everything from his final form.
If there was a way to take the backpack off of Optimus Primal you could have both Primal and Optimal displayed in robot mode.
You can unfold Primal in combined mode and make it look like Optimal Optimus has one of those novelty backpacks.
I swear Hasbro intentionally made it so you can't remove him. Normally it would just be a plastic hinge you could easily pop out, but, these have a metal rod going through them.

Ah yes, the beast mode... that was used like three times.
I had the original Optimal Optimus and I gotta say, this thing “looks” great, but it seems like the plastic is kinda cheap and “snappy” with all the pop-off bits. If Takara Tomy released a better quality, more filled out, not so hollow, denser plastic, or dare I say diecast metal, this thing would be PERFECT
He looks real good, and true to the original appearance, but full spaceship on his back??? You couldn't pay me to get this. That hollow spot behind his neck is a real deal breaker too.
