  • The pandemic and resulting travel restrictions have had a devastating toll on the Thai Airways fleet. Previously an operator of the mighty Boeing 747-400 and the superjumbo Airbus A380, the carrier’s collection of aircraft has been significantly reduced due to suppressed travel activity. So, with its big quadjets unlikely to return, what is the current state of the Thai Airways fleet? Let's examine where things now stand with today's video.

Not only due to the mismanagement but also fierce competition from the LCCs for regional flights as well as the ME3 for Europe-Thailand flights, making Thai Airways is in tough position to compete with other airlines.

It’s not a secret, but the main reason of their financial difficulties is the corruption within the organisation at all levels.
The lucrative routes to places like London and Paris were still loss making, despite nearly all flights were fully loaded and their ticket prices were over the top! Considering their payroll should be among the cheapest, compared to European ones for example, which should’ve created some profitable margins. They couldn’t capitalise because of the ongoing corruptions. TG’s profile is very similar to the good old Alitalia, in terms of golden days back in the 80s and 90s and highly corrupted in present days.
Anyway, I genuinely hope they succeed with their restructuring plans. Their current fleet should help easing down the impact of genuine financial crisis. I also wish they would bring back A380.

Flown on 747-400, A380 and 777's from Thai over the years. The 747 was the pinnacle of comfort in economy with 34" legroom but the overriding thing that made my choice easy was the Thai in flight service. I have yet to experience the 787 on the London route, but hope to in October.

Flying in to Suvarnabhumi airport a few weeks ago I noticed Thai had been storing their planes on the aprons around the airport, while most other airlines moved their planes to better climates. Now all these planes look old would probably need a lot of work to get them back up to scratch, might avoid flying Thai for a while which is annoying as I noticed they’ve started flying to my city again.

those parked 747, a330, a380, 777s on the apron near the new terminal are definitely not coming back to service. the 747s are all sold, a380s and a330s are waiting to be returned to the lessors, and the 777s are not even relavent anymore. so why would they bother making it look pretty when itll likely get sold and repainted anyway?

I flew on their A380's in 2019, to Tokyo. It was magnificent, so i'm genuinely saddened that they're being sold. The experience was wonderful. the plane was super quiet and the service was superb. Tourists are starting to return to Thailand and the airline needs capacity to create cheaper tickets and draw customers back in as the country is keen for more people to visit.
Having said that, there is ongoing issues within airline management and the bankruptcy process has made those who lost money on tickets extremely angry; they're still awaiting refunds and may not receive any, if at all, until 2024.

  • @robor88

Sadly it seems that corrupt conduct is the Thai way. I can't believe their own government sold its shares in the flag carrier.
They could easily return the A380 into service by offering normal airfares from Bangkok to Europe/USA, rather than the extortionate prices being seen now due to all airlines price fixing and price gouging following the pandemic.
So many people can't afford to fly right now, like myself, but if prices were to return to normal I'd immediately buy a ticket (along with thousands of others who are waiting for more reasonable pricing) aboard TG & their seats would fill quickly. BKK is a hub airport between Australia/NZ & Europe, and they had no trouble filling up their A380s in the past, so they'd have no trouble now. It's a matter of making the prices reasonable.
