This is that one song that if I am about to park my car in the garage and Freebird comes on I back it up and I keep driving for another 9 minutes. No joke.
Only 9?
@@ericwest7253 right it's on repeat from there on out 😂
@@ericwest7253 makes ya wanna fire up a hot rod and just drive to the coast man
I’ll just sit in the car, when this comes on it’s gonna be a good day
I am a 65 year old black man who has been a Skynard fan from the begining. While in prison for ten years. A lot of C O's got to know me. So when Freebird a came on my radio they knew for 9 minutes i was going to play it real loud. And do not ask me to turn it down. 😊 RIP. Ronnie, Steve. Allen. Leon. Billy
It doesn't end...it just fades away. Rumor has it that outro is still going on to this day - 40+ years later.
I like that a lot.
That why I hear it every once in awhile 🤔🤔
😂😂😂😂
Great comment!
I believe doctors call it "tinitus"
The outtake version does have a ending. It's on Skynyrd's Innyrds. It's badass too.
When I walked out of court after my divorce was declared final (after a 9 year abusive relationship), I got in the car and this song came on the radio. You just can't plan such perfection!
Truly sorry for what you Endured! Sincerely my mom went through it. RIP to her. Glad you broke away from abuse!
a year ago but hope u doing ok freebird 🕊🦅 and even if not what can you do? LORD KNOWS YOU CANT CHAYE-AYE-AYE-AYE-AYE-AAAAAGE 🏎😎🦅🦅🦅
Sorry about your abuse I was the man my divorce definitely not abusive.. but yeah that's a perfect song to hear..I got going through the big d and I don't mean Dallas...cause I didn't even get the jeep.. hope like hell your life is good now!
Congratulations free bird 😎
When I was in highschool (late 90s) I got in a fistfight with my best friend. She attacked me and her brother had to break it up. As soon as I got in my car and started driving, that dumb No Doubt song comes on " you used to be my best friend, I never thought this would be the end" and I had to pull over and sob.
This was their biggest song. In October 77, they had a plane crash and half the band died including their Lead Singer, Ronnie. The surviving members became the Rossington-Collins Band. I saw them on July 4th 1981 in Miami. They played Freebird as an Instrumental...and left an open Mic centerstage. Right on cue, the entire stadium sang for them...not a dry eye in the house...still gives me chills...
Interesting story my ex girlfriend granddad was the one who took them to the hospital and tried to save them. Plane crashed on his land. He still has the truck and still has some blood in the bed of it. One of the coolest things I’ve been able to see. The band honored him in 2019 at a concert in Jackson, MS
Omg. Didn't know that thanks for letting me know
Oh my god. That sounds like the most amazing concert that ever happened. Too bad it happened two years before I was born. I would've love to have been there for that!
This was one of my Daddy's favorite songs. I cry every time I hear it because my Daddy is now truly free, but I miss him every day. My Daddy was always a free spirit and he always wanted me to be one as well. RIP Daddy. I miss you.
Sorry to hear about your Father. Every time you hear this song, just know that he is right there enjoying it with you. Peace and God Bless....
I'm sorry about your daddy. 🥺
Bittersweet yet beautiful. ❤
My fav LS song is That Smell, weird when you understand it, but dayum, VOL UP!!
I did sit my first born down and played Simple Man, repeatedly, in fact, it's my ring tone on his phone. 😊
Think he will have similar feelings once I'm gone...maybe.
I will think of you and your daddy now when I hear Free Bird. ❤
Thank you for sharing. 😊
I miss my daddy too! I still talk to mine & believe he can hear me. God bless!
😢❤️❤️
He's so free and providing you breath and helping you provide for your family. We can't see our lost Loved ones, but the are Always their.. Take care, God Bless...
I hope you like this song. It is one of the best guitar solos ever made.
Other than jimi hendrix and stevie ray Vaughn for sure!!!!
Do you think anyone told them you can't put a 5 minute solo in a song?
OMG so true!!!! SRV has nothing on this solo!!!
@@jonm7888 you've heard a near 10 mins of Tin Pan Alley right? essentially the whole song is a solo with SOME vocals
@@Montweezy love stevie ray
This is why when someone says "I'm in a band", someone says, "Play Free Bird!"
It's not a request. It's a challenge.
This is the realist shit right here.
We played Free Bird at my grandfather's death bed since it was his last wish. I kid you not, I saw his fingers move a bit during the outro even after he was 'medically dead'.
The solo is basically what happens when you have 3 extremely talented guitarists and you need to fill out the rest of the song so you just let them go to town for the next 5 minutes.
No actually the reason behind the long solo was while on tour Ronnie Van Zant would start to lose his voice so the band picked up time so he could rest it.
There's nothing "basic " about it.
I think all the lead parts are Allen Collins
And Leon, Artemis and Billy.
Free bird is considered one of the South's national anthems. I've listened to it since it came out but I never really got it until I was leaving my parents' grave sites on the interstate on my motorcycle. This song came on and the next thing I knew I was doing about 95 mph and just screaming dancing on my bike. It's such a powerful song.
Well, you Southerners might consider it an anthem of the South, but for a LOT of us, it is an anthem of our generation. Sorry, you can't keep it all for yourselves; you gotta share!
The singer, Ronnie Van Zant, was a GENIUS.
Rip Ronnie though
You got that right
Abso freaking lutely
"Tuesday's Gone", "Call Me The Breeze", "Ballad of Curtis Lowe" "Sweet Home Alabama" ""Simple Man" among many others! Enjoy this wormhole!
T for Texas, I Need You, Travellin Man. Live 1976!!
Underrated but AMAZING
All I Can Do Is Write About It!!!! That's one of my favs!!
Gimme 3 steps
I actually enjoy Metallica’s version of Tuesday’s Gone better. If you haven’t heard it, check it out! One of my all time favorite covers!!
Live version please! You have to see that guitar action! Li e at Knebworth is the best one. The camera focuses on the band and not so much in the crowd. Yes three guitars and yes it's a solo/ out to. When they played it live they played the solo sometimes up to 15 minutes. Pretty much until the drummer had to give the signal he couldn't go anymore. In the Knebworth performance lead singer has to tug on Allen Collins shoulder to get him to wrap it up on the solo
Spot on April. So many people do the Oakland show but Knebworth slays it.
@@tragicdeyz2641 Yes. I get so tired of seeing that one get all the attention lol
Ronnie checks with drummer to find out how much longer he can keep playing. Drums much more physical.
In general, I watch these reaction videos because I want to experience my first-time with these songs, which means I generally prefer seeing people react to the studio versions.
They are releasing the whole show on dvd next week
Ronnie Van Zant would ask the audience at the end of their concerts, “what song do you want hear?”. The answer would always come back as “Free Bird”. This is their most famous song and their most beloved. “Sweet Home Alabama” is a good one from them to check out also.
The hair on the back of my neck is standing up!!! I was in the audience in Jacksonville, FL in the late 70's when he said that!!!
Got to love Sweet home Alabama. ♥️✌️😎
The first tour after the wreck , the (survivors) band just played the music with Ronnie's hat over the mic and a bottle of jack below it sitting on the stage. The crowd were all weeping while singing the words real soft and then it started to rain lightly,,,, the sky was even crying .
The song is dedicated to the memory of musician Duane Allman . Duane died in a motorcycle accident in 1971 .
No it wasn't
Greatest southern rock song ever! I was listening to their records in the 70's before the plane crash & then it was over. Sure miss Ronnie.
The guitar solo in this always makes me feel like I'm being energized by a bolt of lightning.
Awww hell yeah! Exactly!
Live version, will blow you away. Was at concert, brings back Great memories. Love your channel, 66 year old grandma, brought a smile to my face
Yeah, the concert were they were on tour with the Stones . They were told not to go to the end of the stage which was built like the Stones logo , the big tongue coming out of the big red lips . But they did anyway and it was so cool.
You don't tell a Southern boy to NOT do something because he will to show you he can and did.
Back in the 70's when I was in high school they played this at every dance.
R.I.P to the many brain cells I lost listening to this while sitting on the hood of my boyfriend's '75 Z-28! I'm realizing there are many songs my brain cells fell victim to! Lol! Awesome memories though!
The best
This was fun watching you react to one of the great “guitar solos” ever! Hope your family is doing well. Appreciate your positive vibes! 💕💕
Southern Rock is music for my soul!
I am a Southern girl raised close to these boys. Van, you hit one of my favorite songs ever. 🎵 Hey, a lot of people will bust you for doing studio version but as a hard core Skynard fan - it's okay, man. Maybe watch it Live in Oakland yourself if you want. Thanks for your reactions! Loved your comments. Makes me smile when you discover the great songs! Tom Petty is another boy raised right here in my hometown of Gainesville, Fl. Hopefully he's on your list!
💯 for sure! I grew up on this southern rock n roll!!!
I sure hope calico Jack's , the mullet and dugout still serving cold beers in gville. 👍
I went to college there. Most expensive time of my life, im still paying off the student loans many years later.
@@johntruxal432 oh lawd Calico Jacks made a lot of money off my student loan income in the late 90’s!! ❤️ Gainesville
@@aimeedouglas1584 CJ's juice cups...by the gallons.
Ever since I saw Forrest Gump, this song always reminds me of the scene with Jenny
First time I heard this song was that movie. Back then i thought it sounded awful, lemme just say, I still feel stupid
My daughter says the same thing
Dude, I haven't enjoyed a reaction to this song quite as much as yours...your faces, your new excitement every time the solo would change up and keep going. Perfect!
I'm 55 and Zeppelin has been my favorite band since I was 12. Never got to see them but, I've seen variations of Skynyrd many times and they are amazing!
The breakthrough event for Skynyrd was when they opened for The Who on their US tour. They had exactly (!) 30 minutes, so they had to go from one song right into the next, leaving 9 minutes at the end for Freebird. Only a band as tightly rehearsed and disciplined as these boys were could make that work. And they did.
Check "Simple Man", or "Gimme three steps"
You just reacted to the greatest Southern Rock song ever. This is Ronnie van Zant's opus. Southern Rock is a genre unto itself, and this is the best example of it. This music, along with other types of music, was a huge part of my youth. It still gives me great memories. I was really worried that you wouldn't give it a good review at first. I was pleasantly surprised. Almost all first-time listeners are blown away by the guitar solos. Yes, they're lengthy, but boy, are they good!
EVER!!
One of the greatest sit back and smoke one songs bro love it
Hi Van; killer air guitar! There's a great live version of this @Oakland in 1977. Sadly several members of the band died in a plane crash including the lead singer.
During the 70s and the early 80s, this and Stairway to Heaven were considered the greatest songs in the history of rock. Brilliant tune!! Blessings from Texas!!!
Still are in my humble opinion
2nd favorite guitar solo of all time, behind Comfortably Numb. Check out an extended live version to see how it's done.
My high school class song - 1978. Love this song Van! 💖💖💖 Really love your reaction to this classic rock song! 😁
class of '78 also!! 😀
@@johndeecee Sweet, an awesome time to grow up.😁
Do "The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe" great song that gets overlooked a lot.
That song was meant to be played extremely loud while ripping down the highway!
I'm 53yo and have known this song all my life. It and about 20 other classic songs float above any rankings because they're all otherworldly musicianship.
Good band.
Excellent song.
Tragic circumstances.
Epic performance in Oakland 1977.
Their "Saturday Night Special'' is one of the best foot stompin' songs I've ever heard.
Best use of this song was in the church fight scene in the first Kingsmens movie. Long live Skynyrd.
Watch this live from Oakland. Insane!
Played this over our high school intercom system when a fellow senior died in a car crash just a few weeks b4 graduation. Cry everytime I hear it but I love it! ❤️
This is my favorite song of all time! If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me. Southern Rock at its finest. Sweet Home Alabama or Tuesday's Gone are good Skynyrd songs.
You are amazing. You listen so deep into a song. Really like that. And then to get words of wisdom at the end. Thanks
This was played at my friends funeral at his own request. So I have a different perspective of… if I leave here tomorrow…. It still makes me think of him and cry. It will forever be his song.
I have a thing for seeing cultures collide and seeing people appreciate and understand other cultures music and traditions. I’ve been on a binge of your videos and I’ve got nothing but respect for it man. Truly awesome.
As a Sister below suggested, to appreciate them even more, you must visit the live version ! If you react to the Live version it becomes even more apparent the magic that was in the air during a great time in Music that has not been lost on those who know good music. And your reaction is awesome, I totally enjoy the reactions from you and that they are so honest and pure. Its a matter of respect in its truest form when someone from a different background can be honest and enjoy something apart from their comfort zone. Kudos to you, a gentlemen and a Scholar.
That “whoop” sound is from the bending of a guitar string! All of this solo, is truly amazing
This is my “Funeral Song”. Play this , I’ll smile. It’s how you feel…inside, not directed to any one person! My bride of 37 years knows this. It’s amazing how guitars can sound this good and blend in with the soul.
I'm so glad to see people doing reaction videos to Free Bird. I'm a boomer, so I've spent so much time listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd; especially "Free Bird". I can't even count how many times I've driven through the countryside looking for a fishing hole, listening to this song. Driving on road trips, listening to this song. I told my family, and I'm serious, "Play the live version from Atlanta Coliseum at my funeral". Lol I'm glad you love it! No matter what mood I'm in, I listen to this song and I can't help but be in an even better mood.
Watching it live, the crowd is exhausted WATCHING the guitar solo. And all the girls are thinking - if he can play GUITAR that long...
This song was one of the most popular senior high school songs ever
They opened for the rolling stones. One rule don't go out on the tongue. They did. Then played this song. Can you imagine trying to follow that as a headline group?
My mother passed at age 48 from a rare unknown cancer. This was her favorite song, and I had it played at her memorial. She became a Christian 3 months prior.....
damn that guitar part is insane
Semper Fi!
Great reaction. This song was played at my aunts funeral has a different meaning to me... but I still love this song
This song is so incredible and it's amazing that's amazing you are truly someone who knows how to listen to music I've been listening to this song my entire life it's one of my all time favorites and I Feel like I knew every little note of this song until you pointed out the whoop noise lol good sugar honey iced tea
Thank you!!! Thank you for reacting with the respect and appreciation this song deserves. There are so many layers upon layers. Not thrilled for the last pause in the solo, but you resisted pausing during the build up. Love the double Dutch reference.
Over 40 years old...still known as the longest and best guitar riffs
Okay, let's see what happens
Dude-great analogy. Crazy good stuff. Grew up on this and glad you are getting to experience it. Keep em coming...
Thank you for recognizing free Byrd. You might want to look into the plane crash that killed several band members including the singer. The band plays on with the brother singing. I have seen them 46 times and saw the brother sing Freebyrd for the first time. The brother tried to finish Freebyrd but couldn’t. The crowd finished the song while the band played on. The emotions were on another level. Everyone was crying even the tough bikers.
I'm sure that their spirits are still in a studio up above playing their hearts out for the angels.
I watched your son react to Simple man by Lynyrd Skynyrd and you could tell it really hit home with him. One of the most real reactions I've seen. It would be cool if we could get your take on the song as well.
Bro I’m a lover of all music but specifically I’ve been a hip hop producer and professional audio engineer for mixing, mastering and recording. I listen to everything, each genre this band has always been one of my favorites even as a kid. Some of their songs are some of my favorite songs of all time and I love watching your reaction videos not just Skynyrd, but in general, I love seeing music lovers reactions for the first time to this band, especially because I haven’t yet seen a negative review if you haven’t heard the song Gimmie Three Step, reaction to that it’s such a good song and the lyrics are great. It’s upbeat. It’s fun you definitely love it. It’s a nice change of pace from their soul soulful sound!
Dude, I love watching your face while you’re hearing the music I grew up listening to. You’re understanding those of us from a generation that lived i. Such different times.
I'm gonna help you eventually when I can... we'll set something up.. you were good to me right away, you helped me too when others didn't notice..
Appreciate you my friend ❤ 🙏
I believe you can be forgiven for pausing during this solo lol. Great analogy w/ the double dutch too. Hilarious. Love this song but I have to admit I fast forward to the solo now. Its too great.
Hey man, just found your YT channel today. The Lynyrd Skynrd song Free Bird, has been played at so many funerals round here, I wouldn't be able to count. Yeah, I'm from NC. Loving your channel. You got a new subbie today. Rock on man !! 😎
It's so cool to see people hear these songs for the first time, it just kind of makes me realize how incredible they are and I have to reanalyze parts that I never really thought of cuz I take them for granted, having just grown up hearing them, they were just there all the time. Reactions like this make me truly realize how great the music is. A great song by Lynyrd Skynyrd The Ballad Of Curtis Loew which always make me cry. They have a lot of really great songs, but that one grabs the heart.
Playing this on guitar hero as a youngin not knowing how long this song was 😭
Lmao!
I love led zepplin
Lynyrd Skynyrd is the pride of Jacksonville Florida where I was born and raised
I ran in here! Pushed like before Play! Can’t wait to see your reaction!!!
You will discover The Best Southern Rock Band Ever! It’s okay to be #1 in this genre.
Oh, brother . . . . . WRONG VERSION . . . . . Oakland, live 1977. The only way to do Skynyrd, is live whenever possible. AC/DC, as well...
i prefer the studio version tbh
except for the birds chirps in the solo
There are about 3.000 guitars in this song. JK. You need to see it live. Nothing against this version or this reaction, but you know how the energy is on stage! It's like a solo. It's like 40 solos at once. The woop woop woop is one of the million guitars.
LOL...MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG BY MY FAVORITE BAND AND LOVED YOUR REACTION!!!!
this was their DEBUT ALBUM, Van.
I always thought that "whoop" sound was they're fingers sliding down the neck of the guitar.
i think it is
I think it was Gary rossington on the slide guitar making that sound.
One of my All Time FAVORITE songs, ever. Thank you so much for reacting to Free Bird ✌🏼
I had the pleasure of seeing these guys in 1977. The last concert they gave in Charlotte NC. Their plane crushed 3 months later. This was the last song they played and it lasted 45 mins.
E P I C MASTERPIECE. THESE GUYS IN THE 70’s were so much fun to see live. It’s still a joy great musicians. More I am late to the your channel and know you have reacted. All. good.
A beautiful artifact of the 70's. There were occasions where Pink Floyd would play the same song in a concert for 45+ minutes. Never stop rockin'.
YOU NEED THE LIVE VERSION!! It makes the experience so much better!!!
8:15 that’s my favorite part of these reactions. When they go from “wow” to “ok this guitarist isn’t playing AROUND” lol
Skynrd is my favorite. Free Bird is my favorite. You need to see the live video of them playing this song, it is amazing! I saw them in concert a few years ago (the new band, lead singer's brother) and they were so good, I can't imagine seeing the OG band back in the day!
Love the LFR family you guys listen to all music and are spot on with your opinions.
There have been a lot of great bands with excellent musicians. But, to be legendary, you need to have a genius like Ronnie on your band. He was truly a genius. Think of all the songs we lost when he died. So tragic.
Thanks a bunch man! I've listened to this song a hundred times and never noticed the "whoop whoop whoop" sound until you pointed it out, now I'll be trying to figure out what it is every time I hear the song.
keep it up sir your message reaches more people then you could imagine. Thank you for the video ^^
I love the fact that they don’t even stop playing, the song just slowly fades away in the end
To answer your question, that "woop woop woop" sound is the sound of the guitarist's fingers rubbing on the ridges of the lower strings. The thicker, lower register strings usually have thick ridges on them.
Morning LFR family and Happy St. Patrick’s Day. What a great reaction to an amazing song. Love some free bird in the AM. Stay blessed y’all
I was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times, before and after the plane crash. The three guitarists are:
Allan Collins
Gary Rossington
Stevie Gaines (died in the plan crash)
You need to see them on one of their live videos. It will show you their guitar brilliance. You can check out "Tuesdays Gone" or "That Smell"
But Steve was not a member of the band when the studio version was recorded. The recorded version is double-tracked by Allen Collins alone.
I saw them at The Fox in Atlanta when I was 18! They left a Golden Eagle on the piano for 30 minutes before they came out and played this song. They followed it with 3 encores!
Grew up in the 70. It's was fantastic. I'm 64 and cry to this music.
They grew up in my home town, Jacksonville, FL over on the Westside- the wild side. They took their name as a play on their gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who gave them a hard time over the long hair. They were a few years older than me but it seems like everyone in this town has a story about meeting them, jamming with, etc. I do know that gimme 3 steps is a true story about Ronnie dancing with another man's girl. But he didn't know.
So sad about the horrible plane crash right as they were making it big time. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I absolutely LOVE how music brings people together
To listen to this song for the very first time again would be magical sighhhhhhh and yessss, u hear a rhythm, a lead and a bass guitar
Loved original singer & the band!!! I’m Jacksonville, FL. girl for 31 yrs now. Not sure if I mentioned this to you before or your son. I went to high school with his daughter, Melody in Orange Park, FL. She is an awesome chic. Her & her mother lived 5 houses down from us on the St. John’s River. My dad actually delivered all the other band members children. They’re an amazing band & group of guys. Good 1st song choice by them. 🎸🎼
Super fun jamming to this amazing classic rock tune. I'm from Detroit and love a variety of genres so this is really fun enjoying tunes with you. :D
That is one thing about the old skool rock they all grew on blues and jazz so it has that soul in it. Reminds me of summer time down on 18th and vine
