I am glad that I live near him. he did a great front porch song video when this pandemic first occurred. My family member got covid when this first occurred and i was glad he stepped up to help. The GooGoo Dolls music will stand the test of time. Johnny’s song writing hits a persons emotions on every level. I like listening to Johnny and just his acoustic guitar best. Got see them this year, and it was incredible!

If you deny what you’re “wired” to do - for ANY reason - your whole world comes apart. I honestly believe this. And I believe that the most tragic thing that can happen in this world is that most people have no choice in the matter, despite all the one-liners about being true to yourself or defying expectations. Most people just don’t have the opportunity to do the things they were meant to do.
I didn’t think I would like both of their personalities as much as I did. They both seem like amazing people. I definitely didn’t think I’d watch the whole video. I did.
Perhaps strangely, I've never, ever seen the film. The song, however...when it came out I was ALL about music, writing poetry and was working full time - never went to see films at the cinema, didn't watch much TV etc. But the song, when it first met my ears it was love at first "hear" lol. Never fallen out of love with it either, still love it just as much as the first time I heard it. I have a deep gratitude for musicians and song writers, for their talent and their words, their dedication to their craft and to as near perfection as anyone can ever get. All of which have so often helped me to say things throughout my life which I could not put into words myself. It is funny how life changes. Where once, some people would be reduced to tears, or laughter, reading my poetry, nowadays I seem to have lost the ability and desire to write any more. It's funny how the most profound experiences in life, both happy and sad, can usually invoke some of the best work you'll ever write, whatever your forte. Heartbreak, yearning, new found love, death, birth, marriage, and many other things. But if you are trying too hard, it just never comes. I think I used to write my way through life experiences. I think in my late 40's I have become too comfortable, too settled - if there is such a thing. Although, re-reading some of my material from my late teens and early 20's, I think I'm quite happy with "boring and comfortable", to be honest! Because it seems my best work came from a place of utter pain, for the most part. Sometimes I think I'd like a time machine to go back, but then I realise that we can sometimes tend to look at life through rose coloured spectacles. When I hit 40, I suppose I had a minor yearning for past times, but now, I have finally developed a confidence in my ability to stand up for what I believe is right, no matter what anyone else may say or think, and a general sense of comfort in the direction my life has taken. Having children is a profound experience, and it completely changes your life and sense of purpose, I've found. Perhaps, when you are getting nearer the tail end of life, suddenly all the things which seemed to matter years ago become quite superficial to you, and you get to realising what is truly important in life. If anyone is still reading this and hasn't fallen asleep yet(!), I wish you all the best. Remember to try to enjoy and embrace whatever stage of life you are at, because it makes you the unique person you are, and don't be afraid of being "uniquely you" - that's why you're here. The jigsaw puzzle of life as a whole has many different shaped pieces and it needs all of us, you included, to complete it. Just be you. Much love. ❤

I love the hit of the mandolin & guitar moment on Iris. Definitely pierce the lyrics to your soul. I just wanna share my little peculiar story to this song "Iris" I was born in August year 1997 where that year this song was being created/hit too. As far as I could remember, I think I heard this song when i was still unconscious kid and since I haven't known many words before, I just keep remembering the guitar moment and hum it whenever I gets in trouble to comfort myself (during my abused years) then only had my sense of being when I was 5 years old when I finally found it on the radio again being played and finally understand the lyrics and what's the title of the song really was. I had so many memories with this song (mostly are painful) but it's the only song that can comfort me so whenever I need to get reminded how truly strong i was and never gonna be alone no matter what may happened again after all I've been through, this is my just to go song. then on my college days, I just found out that it was originally for the movie soundtrack of "City Angels" and surprisingly that song was being played before that accident then 😭 i f* cried so hard again since I met and lost someone important in my life the same in the story too and had to go on in life for him like it's my own fault too so I need to be his substitute like too to continue what he left me to keep.
The funny thing about Iris is that its not about any woman named Iris. Johnny said he was struggling to find a name for this song, so he just called it whatever first came to his mind. The word Iris was always in the back of his mind as a possible lyric to a song, so he just decided to call it Iris. It was a really clever move by John because it made the song more memorable. Is Iris about a woman in Johnny's life or is Iris about a woman in the film City of Angels. Iris will always be associated with the City of Angels soundtrack thanks to Johnny and his brilliant lyrics.
Having never seen the film, but having first heard the song, and then having seen only the music video after, I had so many thoughts about it. They're all pretty much completely and utterly wrong from the writer's point of view, but that's what I love about lyrics and poetry, they can have so many interpretations and meanings depending upon the listener/reader. My original thoughts back in the day were about the iris being part of the eye, the eye being the lens to the physical world, the way they had him looking through telescopes in the video, and the part about not wanting the world to SEE him ("me"). Then, I thought an iris is also a flower, so was he comparing the subject of his love to a beautiful flower... I love exploring lyrics. Then finding out afterwards how the writer actually came about writing them is fascinating. And sometimes it can be quite funny, because sometimes we can fit lyrics so heavily into our own way of thinking that we completely miss the original perspective of the writer. I did that with a local band once, but we had a jolly good laugh about how wayyyy off my interpretation of their lyrics was lol. Always fun to explore and learn.

I watched the whole thing, hoping to glean some info on why or how he used or found that tuning, but nothing! He asked about the frickin' time signature, but didn't bother to ask about the tuning. If this were Marty Friedman, Satriani, or Vai, there'd be a whole video on JUST the tuning, but since Johnny isn't a shredder or a "guitar guy" we don't get that level of detail, somehow. Odd.

I was defensive for the Goo Goo Dolls for selling out when Gutterower came out, and here I am, 20 years later, hating every GGD album since then for them truly selling out. I’ve tried to enjoy every album since then and I just can’t. They’re way too safe, way too conformist to trends. But I understand that people grow older and develop new interests. However, I still bang out to 1990-1998 Goo Goo Dolls.
