I like to think that a quarter of their disagreements is them both sitting in their own fortresses and waiting for the other to attack. That would be far less violent.
Imperial Fists Boarding Party: You wants us to board the IV legion’s flagship, knowing it will be costly. Polux: I do. IFBP: Very Well. Glory to Dorn, and glory to Him on Earth.
So funny. My family recognizes your opening everytime I watch or rewatch a video. "Whelp, dad is painting. Better bring him water. He'll be there for a while"
" Worst still I regret not finishing the job. My retribution fleet had him, lord, we were close to killing the bastard." Alexis Pollux to the Primarch Roboute Guilliman on Maccrage
Kinda shows inability to take initiative on Polluxs side imo. You have a primarch cornered and you're not gonna go for decapitating a traitor legion... Sure...
My favorite thing about this story is the irony of how it ends. The only reason why they survived the attack by the iron warriors is because sigismund was not in command, he would have tried to break out and been cut down out of formation, but the flipside is that if it had been Sigismund or a commander like him who receivied that final order to return, they would have simply delayed their retreat until they had finished criplling the iron warriors. Loyalty saved them and damned the Imperium at the same time
Praise the Emperor, Occulus is back and we're revisiting the Pre-Calth HH battles? Cannot wait for the narration of the Raven's flight and Paramar next 😉
Paramar definitely needs to be covered, such an important and pivotal early battle for the traitors which was necessary for the events later in the heresy.
And lo, sayeth the Emperor; 'I gift unto thee another Oculus video. I bid thee end thine current doings to partake. For it is good.' And so I did as bode; and it was good.
This is the first I really have ever heard of this battle. I’ve heard its mention in the past but I’ve never had any details given. One of the examples as to the reason I listen and recommended this channel to all my friends that even have a passing interest in the franchise.
Yep. Many other 40K channels will stick to just playing "The Hits". Oculus Imperia is one of the few channels that will drill deep, and reveal stories few ever thought worry of telling. And do so in a way that they become perennial favorites.
Even as an Iron Warriors fan, Alexis Pollux was a warrior and fleet commander of tremendous skill. I doubt even Sigismund could have done better at phall. He made Perturabo build automata as bodyguards, he was so surprised that the boarding party got that close through his Iron warrior protection. Legend. Glad you gave him some light here in yet another of your superb videos, Oculus, as Id never fully heard the full tale of the Battle of Phall
Your quality of videos that come out of sheer detail, character, established atmosphere & attitude is astounding, impressive & unparalleled. I can only watch & enjoy. Thank you.
Excellent work as always Historator. Your pondering at the end definitely has the ring of veracity based on what we know of the Archenemy & their tendency for plans within plans.
YEEESSS, I've been wanting information on the Battle of Phall since first reading about Dantioch, but wasn't able to find a cohesive narrative about the event.
To think that a commander of the Fists could have taken the head of the bitter perturabor right then and there is just awesome and tragic at the same time. Hell! If not for the message, this could became the "iron cage" of the IV and the battle of the Imperial pallace might not be so costly for the Imperial. Definetly the work of Chaos!
"The kaiser gave you a commission assuming you would know when NOT to obey an order" Andy Milburn USMC "A Duty to disobey" If only the Legion had stayed and finished off perturabo
Love that evaluation at the end of the video. For all intents & purposes, the Imperial Fist Retribution Fleet was not meant to survive that day. Yet they did (however battered). To call that a defeat (or an Iron Warrior victory) would be a gross oversimplification; if anything, it was a “pyrrhic” defeat at best.
"There is no such thing as alternative histories, only fiction." Yeah, about that... The Oculus Investigatus may wish to consult a certain record involving a certain Primaris prototype that implies the exact opposite being true.
A small addendum: Hashin Yonnad, the first fleetmaster, was a veritable legend, having led the Imperium's forces in the Consus Drift Campaign and in the Araneus Wars, that led to Araneus Prime being calles Necromunda. His foresight was proven by his choice of Polux as a successor. It's tragic he went out like that, one of the countless evil ironies of the Horus Heresy.
It's so funny this video came up today, I was just thinking about this battle and how it ends yesterday. I can only imagine how good the Horus Heresy might be if GW had hired experienced historical fiction writers and military-knowledgeable novelists. And I can only imagine how clever the writer thought he was when he came up with this ending. But these videos make even the decidedly young-adult stories from GW sound really good.
The Sons of Dorn do not show emotion, positive or otherwise, often or easily. But I'm absolutely convinced that at least some cracked grim smiles as the Iron Warriors engaged them "Time to settle this PROPERLY"
Okay, I know the joke is that the Imperial Fists can fortify anything, but i wasn't expecting that to extend to the empty vacuum of interplanetary space!
One of the more random consequences of phall was the disgrace of Perturabos bodyguard, the dominators. After having the imperial fists breach the inner sanctum of his flagship, perturabo lost faith in his honour guard and replaced them with the iron circle, a group of massive customised battle automata that he designed and controlled. It probably didn’t do much good for perturabos coolness towards his sons, nor his paranoia.
Let’s face it, strategically speaking, leaving the Battle of Phall unfinished was just stupid. Had they taken out Perturabo, they would have aided immensely the Imperial war effort - probably saving millions of lives in the process. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
And this was the moment the Black Templars began to become a separate force. Sigismund would have stayed, ignoring his Primarch's orders, and kept killing traitors.
Least violent disagreement between the Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists.
It might as well be true when you see what happened whenever they worked together during the Crusade!!!!
I like to think that a quarter of their disagreements is them both sitting in their own fortresses and waiting for the other to attack. That would be far less violent.

Conversely, the Iron Warriors were at a distinct disadvantage. How does one Siege that which has no walls?
