Omg! I have had this exact same experience as a dsbw myself. Any time a blk wmn shows any self confidence it is viewed as “attitude.” You have to come in being meek and mild with this air of servitude like you owe them something. It’s a shame what blk nurses have to go through in this profession. I can’t wait to hear the next part! Can’t believe you left us with a cliffhanger!
This issue we face is so real, so daunting. Previously I didn’t even know how to process or express my thoughts on these issues faced by black nurses specifically. I’m no longer surprised to find that we share the same issues.
@@KendraRN I find that no one cares. Not for real anyway. The most you will get out of administration is gaslighting and maybe so fake promises of following up. But I say they can try to gate keep all they want no one is flocking to be a nurse these days.
Wow. Miss Kendra. I'm absolutely impressed with your knowledge of nursing and excellent communication skills. This World needs more Nurses like you. I hope that you will be a Nurse for a hundred years.
Also highly suggest when in these situations of discrimination to file complaints with your state and EEOC. Even if u will leave its worth it bc your employer will have to respond to a complaint and be on radar. So sorry you had this experience.
Girl you are the realest!!! And yes , “we” do have issues getting into the ICU. It’s not right. I Applaud you for being forthcoming . You are intellectual & very smart when you speak. I’m happy that you stood up for yourself professionally unlike them. I love it here.
Thank you so much!!! I have more coming. Black nurses amongst themselves because our mindset is that, no one will believe our stories anyway. No more, we have platforms and need to speak out.
Hi Kendra. My niece is a recent grad that went straight to ICU. She had her first bad experience with her trainer. It's bad when a new nurse has no support. I luv your channel
I really need to speak with you Kendra. I have a feeling it will be super productive. Almost the exact same experiences. I'm on an eye-opening mission to objectively and systematically make an impact and a well-needed change on the trauma (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) that nurses (especially those of color) go through
Thank you so much for sharing. I truly admire your intelligence and tenacity. I'm so glad you just didn't accept that particular hospitals rejection. What a lesson for anybody to glean from no matter what profession. We are always judged with by a double standard; how dare we have a voice or be direct in any situation.
I have been enjoying your content. I appreciate you being so candid. It is unfortunate that black competent, willing and dedicated nurses have to deal with racism. Sometimes not just the ICU! Keep the videos coming.
In our hospital anyone currently working with highest seniority & min qualifications got the job. Unions level the playing field so much. Enjoy your vacation
Same thing happened to me. I was with a company 10 years went to school graduated. Applied for an accounting job and they were excited before seeing me. They said they would rather hire within the company, but when they saw me everything changed. I wrote HR and no one was able to give me an answer. I wrote the labor law. I had a case but didn't follow through because I was over it and moved to another state. I would have been the only black in that department. I know how you feel. It messed with me for a long time, but I didn't give up.
I would love for you to be my mentor. I'm going back to school for nursing. It's amazing how you handle yourself which other people perceive as " attitude" keep pushing forward and continue to inspire nursing students like myself.
It's really sad that we have this tendency: when someone else wants to do something that seems elevated or different to people around us, our tendency is to discourage each other. I don't get that and it seems to be most predominant for those of us in the US. I don't know of any other group that has such a strong tendency to react that way. Glad you followed your intuition and took action. More often than not, it does lead to a breakthrough.
I am a retired registered nurse, I graduated in 1973. It was worse back then for black nurses. I can give you all sorts of horror stories stories that I should’ve gone to EOC, but I didn’t and stories where I did stand up and say you’re not going to do this to me. I worked the majority of my career with federal government, state, government, and local government facilities. When you work with the government, they have to follow certain rules that private institutions don’t have to follow, you have more of a recourse of taking things to EOC.
I would appreciate everything you would do for me Kendra. I would be comforted by your knowledge, compassion and skill you have worked so hard and so long to achieve. Knowledge is power. Some peers hate that. Compassion is a big key in being a nurse. Many don't have it. Lord bless you.
Wow !! That's sounding like some systemic racism going on... Sometimes I think it's just assumed that Black women have attitudes and people are on the defensive before they even say "hi" !! I'm glad you continued on can't wait to hear the rest and see your sights... (I didn't mind the noise made me feel like I was there with you lol)
Similar thing happened to me. They chose a white woman over me. So I left a few months later for another hospital and got into the ICU no problems. I returned to said hospital in the ICU there and guess what nurse wasn’t there anymore? That white nurse. She came and went all before I came back. So much for retention.
They do nurses of color so wrong. When I was a new grad working on the pediatric unit. I was the only nurse of color and my preceptor use make me explain to her why I wanted to work on the pediatric unit. Bc I didn't belong there to her and she told me she did not like change hint hint
Hmm I guess there will have been a lot of vacancies in icu during the last few years since the pandemic made it a less cushy environment for the gatekeepers. I hope that black nurses will now get a fair chance to step up into any specialty area that they choose to.
I feel like they know that’s something they can easily use against bw and it’ll be believed instantly cause of the negative connotation put on bw with the whole angry bw trope even if you have no attitude and are very professional kind with great bed side manners, doesn’t matter if they don’t like you and wanna tarnish your character for whatever reason that’s that main complaint their gonna use knowing it’s more likely to be believed regardless and it’s infuriating and frustrating cause it’s always damned if you do damned if you don’t with bw no matter how amazing we are as a person and with our job we always get the short end of the stick from jealous hateful people and who do you turn too cause management and HR tend to not take you seriously or ignore until you maybe threaten legal action with your attorney, then people wonder why people are so stressed from their jobs cause it turns out bullying and juvenile behavior doesn’t stop in high school it continues in the work place with adults making your job a lot more stressful than it needs to be or should be smh
I’m so surprised you didn’t try and sue them for discrimination… how can they say all that about you without providing any examples or documentations? Pretty gross what we have to experience as people of color smh
Wow what does a (I hate refer to race with this) BW have to do to make it in USA as a nurse. Its sad to hear the obstacles that have been established to hold BW back. I hope the way they need nurses so bad now that they are not doing this type thing to ppl applying for work as a nurse on any level.

This is in all professions to be honest. You have to learn to game the system. Also, don't be afraid to be yourself regardless.

You’re onto something sis! I’ll post the 2nd part on Monday.
What a cliff hanger!! I can't wait to hear what happened next!
I love Grenada, and your island home is exceptional!! God bless you for your videos and you have won my support.
I'm very sorry you went through this. I will be checking for part 2.
IMO attitude means you’re smart and they’re jealous
#unions this is why unions are so important! 5 yrs med surg (and tele) until I got the chance to go to critical care. But here I am! 18 months later!
I'm currently a medical student I studied in Grenada its such a beautiful country!

Yep, I experienced something similar I filed an eeoc complaint.
I'm very sorry to hear that in my opinion that's judging a book by its cover.
Once I saw the balcony I thought of Grenada 🇬🇩
I go through the same thing to often. Your hard-work gets overlooked due to politics, a.k.a racism
No acknowledgement whatsoever! Poor references, I mean, I can go on and on.
@@KendraRN I'm glad I found you.

I have def noticed more diversity post pandemic.
Now that the ICU is tougher than ever with Covid, it’s all the POC nurses putting in the work. They others left.
U look Jamaican. Great content
I would've CCD D&I and board members

Are ICU nurses supposed to be upper echelon or something?

Very typical. People do this mess and pretend like it's because of a mistake we made when its racism.
Cave dwellers
