  • A quick update on the demolition of the Market Tavern. Also a tour around the Old Town Hall, which I believe they will also demolish if we aren't careful.

    Great video Tim. As I've said before, Sheffield council are hell bent on erasing the city's history. Absolutely tragic. When you look at York and the influx of visitors they get, Sheffield would have looked the same as York if the council hadn't erased all the old buildings. I used to love getting some shopping from the markets and going in the Market Tavern for a pint or 2. Very sadly missed and not just by me. Wonderful old building, the likes of will never be seen again. Cheers Tim

    The Marples were bombed in the war, as I'm sure you know. As the Marples were a short distance away, was that bombed too?.hence the red brick?. I believe they knocked the markets down, so it, with the new market, would draw people to the Moor, to make more money. I wonder how many criminals were sentenced to be executed in the town hall?.

    • @timawells
      @timawells  9 месяцев назад

      It would have been better to draw people to either end of the city centre. Since lockdown they have made it impossible for vehicles to get into the Castle Market area. The plan is to turn into more flats, offering the Castle park and no more.

    My guess is the unmatched brick comes from when the building was changed into a courthouse, possibly reducing larger more grand windows of a town hall, economics dictated cheaper material.

      There are big chunks that have been replaced with red brick, me thinks they have taken away to use for other things.

    Whats the point just keeping facias? The Isaac's Building on Pinstone street facia that is left is dwarfed by the high rise at the rear. Do the Friends of the Old Town Hall know anything. 🤔. It should have been turned into something of quality straight after the Court closed but now its too late because the whole area has gone down the pan. The old tram ride footage from I902 shows the grandeur we have lost. 😢.

    Have a walk up the river from Malin Bridge and see what the Sheffield City Council has allowed on the River Loxley.A concrete eyesore which The Star described as a positive development.There is a toxic tip through which there was not supposed to be any disturbance but it now has a road through it.The Environment Agency issued an abstraction licence which is supposed to ensure abstraction doesn't leave the Weir dry but for years the EA hasn't enforced a licence so have a look in summer.The plant produces power which is a fairly derisory amount compared to the environmental cost,and the plant operator took an excavator to the river bed for which he received no penalty The Weir pool is full of building rubble which the EA tries to justify leaving despite The Star and the plans saying would be a metre deep.The weirs on the Loxley are described as of international importance in a report.Sheffield has been destroying it's heritage for years in the view of many people.Objections to the Wisewood Hydro Scheme were not embraced by Sheffield planners.
