Donut Media I started a project car RUclips channel building hey twin turbo 6.0 LS 1971 GS and I could not believe the salt I got in forums and other places but not on RUclips most you guys are helpful and awesome. for trying to bring back to life a car any other way then original. A car I dreamed about owning for 13 years. It is sad we live in a time where certain people‘s point of views are absolutely destroying car culture. The days of hot rodding in the 50s, 60s, and 70s are gone, where people only cared about getting it down a quarter mile, or who was faster on the back streets. Now if you don’t build a specific car a specific way, get the heck out. Where is the fun in that? Where is the passion? That is not passion; that is cancer. If it is not your car, then be supportive. The only time we should be competitive is at the track; until then, we’re all fighting to keep the hobby and passion alive long enough for it to reach the next generation. Thank you guy for being true gearheads and inspiring others to build their dreams
Im so excited for this show! Learning how to do electrical work like installing fog lights and soundsystems is something id wanna learn more about but just in general not messing up the electrical system in my car would be great to learn about for sure!
@@kanamekiyru A super long handled tool with a socket attachment on the end. It gives you increased leverage for getting off stubborn bolts...... and cars have a LOT of stubborn bolts.
How to get a project car: Step 1: Have an old, cheap car as the only vehicle you own. Step 2: every time that something breaks, replace it with something better. BOOM, project car

The Money Pit Miata and this whole series is probably the best Edu Series on cares on youtube and even though its 2 years old its aged like wine. So much useful Information in the whole series i end up coming back because i remember Zach breaking it down for me here better than anyone else when i need a question answered.
@@just-dl I'll be on the other side of the coin and say I love my 97 Civic as my first car. I paid little for it so I trash it around in the dirt roads and will probs eventually upgrade it a bit.
This series inspired me to buy a datsun 280z. Within 3 weeks of owning it I've already done wheels and tires, completely brake system hardware replacement including master cylinder and booster, and gave it a tune up and a sick valve cover paint job.
In all honesty it’s very hard as a 20/21 in a week year old with nobody in the industry to show you, I just got my first stick shift car and I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’m not embarrassed to let people in my passenger seat (2003 fora escort zx2) I just am very interested in being able to know about my car and be able to add a couple hp or make her sound extra sexy, but I have no idea where to begin, I feel like a toddler. I can’t even change my own oil. What I’d give for somebody to crack open a 6 pack and just lay down some knowledge. I’m time I know my passion will lead me to somebody willing to help me learn. Thank you for this video. The little bits and pieces of lingo and info I soak up like a sponge, I really wanna get into this industry before electric cars kill it. I wanna make shit go boom and take off into the sunset, I guess time will tell
alot of info that got me started was looking up how to videos on replacing oil,filter,headers,exhaust, window motors, starters. its all there if not for you make and model one similar just have to dig a little and you can learn without anyone but youtube, and like the video says. the community. A community
My good sir just Binge doughnut content and trust you'll get a general understanding of what's going on . After that . Go get a project , using doughnuts knowledge pick out more specific videos and get to wrenching , as long as your having Fun you'll be fine it's 2022 and information has never bin more abundant so get at it
RUclips helped me a lot, my dad doesn’t really show me anything so I did most of the mods on my car by myself. Coil overs, suspension parts etc, just watch RUclips videos on what you want to do over and over, that’s how I learned. Sucks seeing other people have dads to show them how to swap engines/transmissions etc but I guess that’s how it goes for some people
Trust me bro, learning/working on cars is an exponential process. Just like collecting tools, you start with one, then u get another, then maybe 3 more, then a full set, then before yk it you have a trunk overfilled with various sockets, pliers, and breaker bars. Its the same shit wit car knowledge. You just start with ok how tf does an engine work exactly? And then u get more and more specific to the parts of the engine you are curious about. Trust me you'll know a lot in no time. I went from failing to even get the oil drain plug off on my acura, to messing with the timing of the engine and cleaning off shift solenoids.
I would finish school and get a good-paying job, then get started. People don’t mention how many 40 and 50 year olds get that motorcycle or Supra they’ve always wanted
I'v been watching Donut Media couple years now and this video is still one of their best content yet. I'm not saying other content isn't good but this video probably had the greatest impact especially on those "allmost car people" 👌🏻
I saved half of every paycheck working at McDonald’s, a pizza place, and now a burger joint for 4 years and now i have a car that i dream about. Work smart not hard.
My project car is my Alfa Romeo 146 that my Dad gifted me when I was going through a rough time. I've never been much into cars but now I'm really started to get interested I wish I had learnt more from my Grandpa, he was a great mechanic! It's gonna be a journey but thank you guys for giving me the motivation I needed to get in there and start to work on it ❤️

I never really grew up knowing much about cars but I’ve always loved seeing project cars come to life. I’ve been learning so much and I want to start modding my sxt. It’s my first car at 19 and I’m hoping I can see my vision through🙏🏻
I think this was the video that pushed me to actually get my hands dirty. I'm a little late to mention this, but the push this video gave me made me successfully bring an abandoned Mustang back to life. Fast-forward till now and I'm constantly driving it across towns, still wanting to better it. So, thanks
gotta start somewhere. go watch engine rebuild videos or car restoration timelapses or just in general videos about cars. go buy a $200 shitbox and mess around with it. you wont learn if you dont go out and try. dont let those words stop you. you can learn anything.
These guys all make very valid points, but i have to say 1.set a budget (the car should not be the entire price of the budget) 2.pick up a socket set and some basically hand tools at walmart or auto zone 3. Pick up a car (if its an i4 or pushrod v8 itll help with simplicity) 4. Pick up a repair manual 5. Go wrench, do tune ups and fluid changes, change brakes, change break lines, fix that leaky head gasket/valve cover gasket, rear main seal, change bushings and motor mounts and use that repair manual as your bible and youll get the hang of wrenching 6. Join facebook pages and forums and learn how and what you what your project car to do, from power adders to machine work, but ultimately, have fun with it

Hey, after I received my first car (Acura Integra) I firstly got inspired from Donut and my car guys friends. I am currently in process of working on it without prior knowledge about cars relying strictly from youtube videos and my friends and its so fun to see your build come to life.
Im kinda in the same boat but the funny thing is i have a integra motor in my civic 94 its a b18 man and their really not that hard its a journey man just be careful who to listen to some make sure they know what their talking about snd doing man

im 13 and i am obsessed about cars and i already know expert level knowledge about them and in future i wanted to buy and restore a 1992 mazda rx7 and every time you learn more whether it rotary engines,inlines,v engines,manual transmission,V TEC etc it still gets me on how huge it could be of a back breaker thanks for the video by the way 😊

my project car is my daily cb7 i manual swapped it fixed my oil leaks changed my timing belt and put on an aftermarket exhaust i love this car and these videos inspired me to find my own car to work on and its so much fun cant wait to try to turbo it
My dad was an engineer and hobby racecar building/driver and even though growing up that didn't interest me, i still learned a little here and there. It wasn't until I bought my own project that i started really understanding why he was always wrenching. What you said is extremely true. Once you start working on yours and learning how it works it makes working on cars much less daunting and more enjoyable. Thank you for this video series, I've been watching it during quarantine and while a lot of what you've posted i personally already know, a lot I also didn't know, so thank you, and keep making series like this in the future. The only reason I haven't started is because I'm 12. I've always like cars and I still do. The only thing kind of driving me away from them is the thought of EVs and all that. Even without EVs, a lot of new cars are too techy, even though technology is one of my favorite things. Another weird thing about me is the fact that I'm a car guy, Moto guy, and truck guy. 🤷🤷 Love the content, keep it up. You guys have earned a place in my heart and have driven me to love cars even more. And as my favorite car channel, I hope you guys see this. 😁😁😁
Same in France (and I guess most europe actually), you can't really modify a car and have it road legal (without painfull and expensive paperwork at least)
to be honest i started not caring anymore. if it isnt a safety issue for me or other ppl i dont get why you should fill in this much paperwork. this paperwork wont make it more safe anyways.
When i was 13 i got my first project moped, a '74 kreidler Florett RM wich used to be my dads. It had been rotting away for 30 years and we attempted to fix it up together. This is what got me into wrenching. The kreidler sadly didnt get finished yet, for the simple reason that the parts got very expensive, and i found out that delivering papers as a 13 year old didnt make the kind of money i needed. I had some other mopeds tho, and built up a great group of friends around wrenching on mopeds. By now most of us are around 20 and we all grew into cars. One of my mates got himself a volvo 480, me and another mate got ourselves a workshop and we are really into toyota starlets (specifically p7's, i converted mine from automatic to manual, with some help from a mate and your video on the money pit bmw). Another friend of mine started off with a volvo 440 and drives an s60 now, theres some golf gti's, a land cruiser bj40, a celica and a lot of other cars in our group, and off course we brag and bash eachothers cars, but in the end everyone is always down to help one another. One time i was on a vacation trip in louxembourg when my slave cilinder broke, and it was at this moment i found out that luxembourg never got the starlets, so i couldnt get my part (i shouldve gained suspicious about the lack of starlets when my car got more attention then the aventador in front of me, but theres plenty of those over there). I happen to be in a starlet group chat, and explained my situation. Someone i have never actually met stepped in and mailed me a slave at cilinder the camping. I happened to have some brake fluid with me, so we replaced the cilinder at the camping and got on our way again! The car community is truly something amazing and i feel priveleged to be a part of it!
@Alexandr Retardo well American cars are expensive to import but its not imposibile to import American cars such as Cadilac or Chevrolet or Lincoln to Europe or Euroasia. Or i can make replicas of old American cars but a smart person would know that my 80s Lincoln its actually a Lada 1300. Anyway what i said is a joke or maybe its not. The future will tell. i was planning on getting a 350z for my first project car and i was getting overwhelmed by all the videos and research but realizing i already have all the basic tools in my garage i feel a lot more confident
The first series I actually feel more "in tune" with than others I've seen, all thanks to this "0th episode". Talking about building cars to aspiring mechanics, in such a clear language and with a great attitude! Great job! This really set me on the path to start a project car. I actually picked up a late model mk6 gti 2013 with the newer style cam tensioner. As my project car. Overall super fun. Super easy to mod. Super easy to make nice power. Price is a little rough but it's a drivers edition so I got thr leather seats, golf ball shift knob, watkins glens wheels. It's super nice!
A keep wrangler is actually what I’m looking for as my 2nd car for off-roading🕺🏾I wanna make my Hyundai tiburon into a race car but I’ll do more research first

There are 2 people in this world....there are spectators and there are doers. Think of it as a learning experience. You will make mistakes. If you need help, reach out to someone for help whether it's through a car friend or car forums. Learning means making mistakes. Roll with the punches until you get there. If you truly love the car culture and want to do it, don't hold back. If it's really not your thing, then don't. It's not an easy road but a fun one.
I knew nothing about cars, but I LOVE them. So I decided to get a job as a lube tech at my local Honda dealership. Now, a year later I am working in the main shop. I think there are so many cool avenues for beginners.
After starting to work on cars, a few more tools i HIGHLY reccomend: Torque wrench, breaker bar. And my favorite tool ever, get an Impact Screwdriver(the kind you hit with a hammer and it spins)

My 96 accord is a good example of project car. Easy to work on, cheap parts and u learn a lot about the basics of cars and how to fix them when they break (which they never do)
Yup. I wanted coilovers for my Hardbody. Bought a 4 link kit and a nice welder. Taught myself how to weld well enough to do the install and off I went:)
I always thought the best route into cars is starting on simpler machines like ATV’s or motorbikes. Gives you the chance to learn everything you need for cars on a much simpler and cheaper machine 👍🏼
I have 4 cars, all 4 are project cars. My oldest is 69 Cadillac and my newest is 14 Cadillac and my first turbo car! Already bought 3 inch down pipe and some other goodies for it. She’s at the shop right now getting all of her maintenance done so I’ll have a good base to start from.
Thank you Zach for being a host on Donut. I have decided to join the car modding community with my first project car! I have chosen a 1991 Honda Prelude Si because the channel has given me a love for popups, VTEC, and I had to have that rare car flex of course. ;)
Best advice I can offer (someone who has has many projects over the years) is try to to let your project car become your DD. I've been stranded many times :)

My current project car is a 1985 Fiero GT, that I'm making into a fastback using a 86 parts car Awesome cars to work on, easy to get into and there's alot more aftermarket than you'd think for such a niche car. You can build them for anything, autocross drag racing etc.. and there are lots of engine swap options. Not to mention the fiero community is probably one of the best automotive communities I've ever been involved in
@@chype986 My 85 with the parts car was 500 bucks, the 86 was about 800. I got the 85 a year ago and the 86 like 4 years ago, but they all need a significant amount of work lol
Great advice, to add to tools to have, I would say a cheap little bottle torch and some wd-40 for all of those rusty bolts that havent been undone since rolling off the production line. So far my most useful tools have been jack/jackstands(dont cheap out on stands, so your research) and socket set with a couple good long extensions. Before buying my latest e36 I had never wrenched on a car before, but I have installed my own coilovers and am currently pulling the diff and rear subframe out of the car. I feel that working on the suspension is a great way to get comfortable with wrenching and if you are like me and dont have anyone experienced to help youtube is your friend. Hoping to re-do the entire suspension and brakes on my car before moving on to engine work, the sound of it is a bit intimidating, but I love the feeling of working on my own car and not having to pay someone expensive labor to get work done.

I have a vw mk4 my dad bought it fresh 21 years back, looks like its brand new still 🔥and he gave it to me. I have NO knowledge about cars but I really wanna start this project
It definitely depends on the car you're working on and the work you're doing. That kit is enough for very basic maintenance/mods. You definitely need a torque wrench for suspension, you need torx bits for some cars. Once you get to engine removal you need a grand more in kit. I think I'm close to done with tools and I spent around $5,000.
odd jobs, cut grass, find moving trucks, and help load/unload boxes, fast food joints are dying for good help; start collecting tools (um, your own...not other people's!), and start deciding what kind of car you want to work on.

Two other things to consider:
- Lack of space to work on cars
- Lack of friends
Space is not a problem, my friend is working on his car at the parking.
@@anski943 my problem is lack of knowlege on cars all together, no idea where to look or what to watch to find out what goes where etc.
2 ways to avoid this:
-Hog up the whole alley fixing your car
-Go to car meets and meet some people
I don’t have friends that’s into cars like myself
If you look hard enough, space won't be a problem.
And a project car is a good way of making new friends.

Its the same shit wit car knowledge. You just start with ok how tf does an engine work exactly? And then u get more and more specific to the parts of the engine you are curious about. Trust me you'll know a lot in no time. I went from failing to even get the oil drain plug off on my acura, to messing with the timing of the engine and cleaning off shift solenoids.

1.set a budget (the car should not be the entire price of the budget)
2.pick up a socket set and some basically hand tools at walmart or auto zone
3. Pick up a car (if its an i4 or pushrod v8 itll help with simplicity)
4. Pick up a repair manual
5. Go wrench, do tune ups and fluid changes, change brakes, change break lines, fix that leaky head gasket/valve cover gasket, rear main seal, change bushings and motor mounts and use that repair manual as your bible and youll get the hang of wrenching
6. Join facebook pages and forums and learn how and what you what your project car to do, from power adders to machine work, but ultimately, have fun with it
Start changing the oil, filters... small things. I'm starting too.

my project car is my daily cb7 i manual swapped it fixed my oil leaks changed my timing belt and put on an aftermarket exhaust i love this car and these videos inspired me to find my own car to work on and its so much fun cant wait to try to turbo it
My dad was an engineer and hobby racecar building/driver and even though growing up that didn't interest me, i still learned a little here and there. It wasn't until I bought my own project that i started really understanding why he was always wrenching. What you said is extremely true. Once you start working on yours and learning how it works it makes working on cars much less daunting and more enjoyable. Thank you for this video series, I've been watching it during quarantine and while a lot of what you've posted i personally already know, a lot I also didn't know, so thank you, and keep making series like this in the future. The only reason I haven't started is because I'm 12. I've always like cars and I still do. The only thing kind of driving me away from them is the thought of EVs and all that. Even without EVs, a lot of new cars are too techy, even though technology is one of my favorite things. When i was 13 i got my first project moped, a '74 kreidler Florett RM wich used to be my dads. It had been rotting away for 30 years and we attempted to fix it up together. This is what got me into wrenching. The kreidler sadly didnt get finished yet, for the simple reason that the parts got very expensive, and i found out that delivering papers as a 13 year old didnt make the kind of money i needed. I had some other mopeds tho, and built up a great group of friends around wrenching on mopeds. By now most of us are around 20 and we all grew into cars. One of my mates got himself a volvo 480, me and another mate got ourselves a workshop and we are really into toyota starlets (specifically p7's, i converted mine from automatic to manual, with some help from a mate and your video on the money pit bmw). Another friend of mine started off with a volvo 440 and drives an s60 now, theres some golf gti's, a land cruiser bj40, a celica and a lot of other cars in our group, and off course we brag and bash eachothers cars, but in the end everyone is always down to help one another.
One time i was on a vacation trip in louxembourg when my slave cilinder broke, and it was at this moment i found out that luxembourg never got the starlets, so i couldnt get my part (i shouldve gained suspicious about the lack of starlets when my car got more attention then the aventador in front of me, but theres plenty of those over there). I happen to be in a starlet group chat, and explained my situation. Someone i have never actually met stepped in and mailed me a slave at cilinder the camping. I happened to have some brake fluid with me, so we replaced the cilinder at the camping and got on our way again!
The car community is truly something amazing and i feel priveleged to be a part of it!

I actually picked up a late model mk6 gti 2013 with the newer style cam tensioner. As my project car. Overall super fun. Super easy to mod. Super easy to make nice power. Price is a little rough but it's a drivers edition so I got thr leather seats, golf ball shift knob, watkins glens wheels. It's super nice!

If you truly love the car culture and want to do it, don't hold back. If it's really not your thing, then don't. It's not an easy road but a fun one.

After starting to work on cars, a few more tools i HIGHLY reccomend: Torque wrench, breaker bar. And my favorite tool ever, get an Impact Screwdriver(the kind you hit with a hammer and it spins)

My 96 accord is a good example of project car. Easy to work on, cheap parts and u learn a lot about the basics of cars and how to fix them when they break (which they never do)

I always thought the best route into cars is starting on simpler machines like ATV’s or motorbikes. Gives you the chance to learn everything you need for cars on a much simpler and cheaper machine 👍🏼
I have 4 cars, all 4 are project cars. My oldest is 69 Cadillac and my newest is 14 Cadillac and my first turbo car! Already bought 3 inch down pipe and some other goodies for it. She’s at the shop right now getting all of her maintenance done so I’ll have a good base to start from.

My current project car is a 1985 Fiero GT, that I'm making into a fastback using a 86 parts car
Awesome cars to work on, easy to get into and there's alot more aftermarket than you'd think for such a niche car. You can build them for anything, autocross drag racing etc.. and there are lots of engine swap options. Not to mention the fiero community is probably one of the best automotive communities I've ever been involved in

Great advice, to add to tools to have, I would say a cheap little bottle torch and some wd-40 for all of those rusty bolts that havent been undone since rolling off the production line. So far my most useful tools have been jack/jackstands(dont cheap out on stands, so your research) and socket set with a couple good long extensions. Before buying my latest e36 I had never wrenched on a car before, but I have installed my own coilovers and am currently pulling the diff and rear subframe out of the car. I feel that working on the suspension is a great way to get comfortable with wrenching and if you are like me and dont have anyone experienced to help youtube is your friend. Hoping to re-do the entire suspension and brakes on my car before moving on to engine work, the sound of it is a bit intimidating, but I love the feeling of working on my own car and not having to pay someone expensive labor to get work done.

It definitely depends on the car you're working on and the work you're doing. That kit is enough for very basic maintenance/mods. You definitely need a torque wrench for suspension, you need torx bits for some cars. Once you get to engine removal you need a grand more in kit. I think I'm close to done with tools and I spent around $5,000.

odd jobs, cut grass, find moving trucks, and help load/unload boxes, fast food joints are dying for good help; start collecting tools (um, your own...not other people's!), and start deciding what kind of car you want to work on.
Side hustle, shit lease a cool car like an accord and Uber in it and use your money to save up to buy a project.

One other very important tool. A torque wrench. Almost ever bolt on a car has a specific torque number.

Hand tight then quarter turn my guy
