Interestingly, as a kid I identified strongly with Knuckles, while as an adult I'm much more of a Tails. Because of reasons (if you're familiar with the term 'parentification.' yeah.) I was an intense, dutiful, reclusive child. Now that I'm older I'm a lot more free, I'm friendlier, sillier, and more willing to let myself make mistakes- say something silly, make bad art, take a risk I wouldn't have as a kid. It's just interesting how people can identify with opposite characters at opposite points in their lives and both have grown.

I never had a GameCube, but I remember playing this game or just the initial phases in a shopping arcade center. At the time, I did not understand what was happening because I was too young and did not know English yet, but the gameplay, the character, what it could convey always seemed so fun.

e102 is 100% the robot. While yes, I am sure there is some of the animal there; I think the machine itself recognizes it needs to die. I have always been for the 102 gamma is dead theory and I still stand by that.
The subtlety I think is missing is that the consciousness of the bird is running the bot; animals running all of the bots, but the machine AI is in charge. dummy plug override. The animals are needed for the machines to function, but they do not have any control at all.
Zero is kind of a plot-hole for either theory though.

Listen, as much as I would love a Fear and Hunger analysis, those games are not for everyone. Not only are they incredibly hard, but the themes and brutal horror included in the story (especially in the first game) make it quite uncomfortable for many people. Don't go through them if you don't want to, and don't feel like you have to make a video just for us.
Regardless, the love you put into all your projects is what really makes them enjoyable. I'd never heard of Who's Lila before this channel, and now I'm halfway through your video on it. Thank you for such a great series of videos, and I can't wait to see what you do next.

SADX is easy to mock. Its animations are rough, it's controls are a bit jank, its dialogue is clunky, and its voice acting is amateurish.
But I appreciate how genuinely you approached it, because I think you're right: beneath that first impression, there's so much to love. This was Sonic's first real foray into 3D (no, 3D Blast doesn't count), and most of the dev team's first time with it as well. They could have done something straightforward and simple, but they made this HUGE swing with so many player characters and jumping timelines. It's impressive!
I think with a little polish and help, it could really shine. And I think that Gamma's portions stand so tall not just because they're affected least by the games limitations -- Gamma's a robot, so robotic animations and voice acting are fine -- but also because it's just such a damn good and unexpectedly sweet story. But that quality was always there, just beneath the obvious first impression, and it seems you never lost sight of it.
Also the soundtrack absolutely slaps. Loved this video and can't wait to see what you do next.

    • @B-019
      @B-019 8 месяцев назад +4

Also holy shit, has there ever been a same-generation glow-up as strong as Sonic Adventure 2?! It's still identifiably a sequel to SADX, but the improvements to animations, voice acting, and dialogue are impressive. It even controls a little less jankily!
Granted, it trades that in for a more linear story, split into 3 teams instead of 7 stories, but it's easy to see why these games had such a crazy impact on early internet culture.
For whatever else you could say about them, they're just so ambitious and strange and unexpected. It's hard not to respect them, even when you're laughing at them.

    • @B-019

I also just gotta get this out here: good on FP for honing in on part of what makes Sonic work.
Sonic isn't just a blue rat that moves fast, gives attitude, and can go Super Saiyan: he's a hero! When Tikal says Chaos needs to be sealed, he takes a risk by trying to SAVE him because that's the right thing to do.
This is actually something the movies do as well, to an extent. Spoilers for Sonic 3, but despite being tempted, Sonic prevails by not letting pain twist him into something he's not. He empathizes with Shadow and stays his hand, sharing the power of the Chaos Emeralds so they can team up to save the world.
Hell, the only reason he can even go Super Sonic in the second movie is because he finds love with his family, even when they're facing death.
And this is part of what makes Sonic "cringe": he's enthusiastic AND caring. He can be irreverent, but he wears his heart on his sleeve for good and for ill. That makes him... Kind of annoying sometimes! But it also makes him a good hero.
I'm rambling at this point, but there's a reason this series resonates with people despite a LOT of its games being objectively incompetent -- whether that's in gameplay, writing, or technology. And I think FP captures that pretty well here.
Now, where's that DAMN fourth Chaos Emerald?!

I really think that Gamma is a little of both theories. I believe that both Gamma and the bird exist inside of him, though the bird is suppressed. Not just its memories, but rather its entire personality and being. Over the course of the game, Gamma gradually becomes less and less the robot he was programmed to be, and more the bird trapped inside. So when Gamma eventually dies, I do see it as a sacrifice. The machine part, a consciousness in its own right, dies to free the bird, its other part, the one that has a family, the one that has a life beyond serving Eggman.

57:00 I do think that cutscene is meant to be how sonic and tails met, because at the start of it tails looks very saddened about something, which considering the fact tails’s backstory is that he spent basically all his life up to meeting sonic being bullied for his second tail makes sense, plus tails looks shocked when he sees sonic in this cutscene, like he’s full of wonder, looking at something completely new to him, like he’s never met him before. Also, I feel like tails probably would’ve said something in this cutscene if he knew sonic at that point, and hey maybe he did in the actual event and at that point he was just too young for current him to remember it so we didn’t see it in the flashback, but the way I see it all signs point to this being how they met

For me, it was Order of Ecclesia. I never cried SO HARD about a game that hit me so hard in the emotional gut. Slight spoiler alert, but it helps with the reasons why I cried. Shanoa, the protagonist of the game, loses all her memories due to Dominus, but during the game, she reforms herself via many trials in various locations in her search for her brother, Albus. Sadly, Albus sacrifices himself to save Shanoa's life and the moment when she gains every memory back as a final request from her brother, she cries and smiles. That part BROKE me. I was a horrible MESS because it reminded me of a personal event that involved a family member I knew deeply and is no longer with us. At the same time, her story, in my opinion, is so strong. She reforged herself from so much trauma and came out as a stronger woman. I recommend the game, but it's like Dark Souls from time to time. It can be punishing.😅

I love talking shop about Gamma. It's a story I hold close to my heart.
My interpretation has always been that Gamma is mostly sentient, but not completely. The Animal in the core of the E-Series, and all Eggman's Badniks, are just batteries. The robot shell is just that, which explains the simple AI behaviors of Sonic's enemies in the series. Eggman had visions with Gamma of making him "more". Even if his hardware was supposed to be weaker than that of his brother's, there's still a quote "edge". Based on his behavior, I believe that he's short of truly sentient. You look at his dialogue, his reaction to Amy's blue Flicky, it's like he doesn't have the mental faculties to truly understand his reactions.
You have the Battery Core, and you've got the Computer. I think what happened is that, because of Gamma's experimental nature, as well as the familial power of the Flicky powering him (maybe a bit of Chaos interference from interacting with Froggy ((Chaos' tail and a Chaos Emerald)) and Tikal), a link was bridged. Not a full one. And I don't think Gamma is completely aware of it. Like I said before, it doesn't feel like Gamma fully comprehends his existence. It's like if I told my TI-82 a joke. The mechanisms of that artificial brain aren't there to comprehend and create the appropriate reaction.
It's a weak bridge, able to only send feelings or an emotion. You can imagine that the Flicky inside Gamma fighting like hell if it was any bit aware that it's child was inches from it, outside of this shell. Gamma is shaking so violently, and then opts to instead free Amy and not follow Eggman's instruction. His reaction also feels like he only did so because he couldn't resolve the conflict in himself, and just wanted Amy and the Blue Flicky to leave to stop the confusion. Look at when Gamma finishes Hot Shelter: He looks at himself, as if he doesn't fully comprehend what he's doing or why he's doing it. Like he's surprised that he's on his own "to free" list. But the instant Beta shows up, that confusion can be ignored and he goes back to mission mode.
In the original version of SA1's script, Gamma was supposed to activate his self destruct. We already have an incredibly heavy ending, so I think it was best they went with the Beta attack instead. But we get the emotional climax of Gamma's story: Gamma frees the Flicky inside of Beta. The Tan Flicky flies up to Gamma, and Gamma just walks by. I don't think he fully understands why he's there. I don't think he knows why he's doing what he's doing. His programing seems entirely task based. The bridge between robot brain and power source is still there. It wants to be free and unbound, and maybe a sense of selflessness, or the simple wish of freedom is why Gamma resolves the conflict as a task. It's only when, in his final moments, the bridge allows for the most important information to be sent to Gamma.
A picture that was taken of the Flicky family. A picture important enough to be kept with the Blue Flicky. And then in his final moment- and the part that absolutely destroys me every time I see this ending- Gamma gets it. The TI-82 laughs. He understands enough to know why he's doing what he's doing. He understands why the Blue Flicky affected himself. He understands why he's taking the actions he's taking. The last bodily function he takes, is to turn to the Tan Flicky. Look at how his body moves. Throughout the game, his movements has been intentional and even pre-programed in appearance. Here? It's quick. It's natural. It's genuine emotive surprise!
I think your take about Gamma intentionally not activating his self-repair sequence is correct. The pieces in-place, facing the creature that was soul bonded to Gamma, as both his Brother and Flicky's Partner, Gamma allows his body to fail. It's not the mind-wiped Flicky that is freed at that moment, but it is Gamma's Soul that becomes unbound. The part disconnected from how he thinks, that leads him to freeing Amy, sparing Sonic, and liberating the animals trapped in his Brothers.
Flickies have been a feature of the Sonic franchise for years before SA1. But anyone who's seen Blade Runner can tell you the significance of a Bird representing an artificial being's soul.
    Thank you for the video

I also see that @flawedpeacock himself liked my comment! If you see this, thank you so much! I didn't know that editing a comment after it's been favorited, removes the favorited status, so, oops! I wanted to run another draft because there was some awkward wording, and some spots didn't communicate what I was going for well enough.
Honestly, this idea of a truly deep dive into Gamma has been my current obsession. Like Gamma's theme telling his story with only sound, in how his main theme contains and traps the Unbound motif, and further plays the notes in a clearly synthetic performance. And sure enough, "Unbound" has that motif, front and center, played crystal clear on a real piano. All with keeping the funky/jazzy aspects of Gamma and Beta's theme songs.
Of the how this male military robot has a female bird powering it, and also acts as its soul? It's Jungian! The Animal is the Anima! I'm sure you could expand that out to the male Flicky inside of Beta, and explains his overly aggressive/machismo personality, sans any introspection or compassion. I don't even know where to begin with such an analysis of the Blue Flicky being chased by E-100.
Again, thanks for the comment, thanks for the video, thanks anyone who takes the time to read this. I hope we can see this story remastered one day, and treated with the importance it deserves.

Sonic Battle has Chaos Gamma exist and he seems to have some of Gamma's sentience despite not having the bird in him and only being made up from some of Gamma's parts. So I think part of it was just Gamma being unique and part of it was the bird.

Man Flaw Peacock, you came out of nowhere to become one of the funniest, most engaging, insightful, and comforting presences on this platform-and I'm gobsmacked you made such a loving tribute to one of my favorite games. Real nostalgic indeed. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into your videos. They're really comforting, and I rewatch them often while working on projects. This one is extra special.
A story about Sonic Adventure from my childhood: When I was a kid, every Friday my Mom would take me to the game store in the strip mall behind my house (it was called "GAMERS") and, she'd rent me two games for the weekend. We grew really close with the shop's owner (we even took care of his Basset Hound for a couple years when him and his wife had a baby).
They got a Japanese Dreamcast when it launched, so we rented it and Sonic Adventure right away (and some other launch titles). I was 9 years old, and the game was obviously entirely in Japanese, but that only made it more appealing (the recent game Tunic has touched on this feeling, I think). And when I heard the music for Emerald Coast Stage 1, it instantly became my favorite song, ever, period. It was bittersweet then that the only way I _could hear it_ back then was to actually _play_ Sonic Adventure-and we never ended up buying a Dreamcast until something like 2010. It made that song, and everything about this game, so much more magical. It's really difficult to get someone who's judging this game through a modern lens to understand how all that makes a kid feel.
Also, ironically, my parents bought me a Sega Saturn, and I had a demo disc of NiGHTs into Dreams!

What are the chances? A youtuber who I have recently fallen in love with, because I feel like everything you create here bleeds genuine passion and interest for what you're covering. And then I'm blessed with a video from you on a game that shaped my childhood. Not to mention, this video has prominent focus on a character that made a HUGE impact on me when I was younger. Gamma introduced me properly to the concept of loss. To see that he had that same impact on you is so validating. This is the kind of thing its so hard to talk to other people about, how a silly little robot man in the goofy sonic game made you, and still makes me tear up about.
I dunno if this video is gonna do numbers for you or not, but I just wanted to elaborate how fucking important your exploration of this game was to me. Thank you, and please stay floppy.

Two things; I (and I imagine a fair number of other people) absolutely would not mind you doing a video on games that you just like that don't really 'need' explaining (suchas Evolution that you mentioned in the video), general plot recaps/things you like about/themes you notice in stuff are totally cool too.
Second, if older games that you wouldn't explicitly expect to need explained (Like I kind of figured SA1 would be, and SA2 if you get to it (please do, that one's MY childhood)), I'd love to see you do a video on Dark Cloud 2. That game's a pretty hefty PS2 JRPG so it might be too time consuming to... consume, let alone make a video about, but it's got so much charm, and a lovely story. And tons of neat mechanics, minigames, music, etc.
All the same, thanks for all your hard work, another banger!

I found your channel through your recent video on Love, Sam so finding this on your channel made my jaw drop. I RARELY see Sonic Adventure, my favorite Sonic game of all time that changed me as an artist, maybe even as a person with how young I was when I played it for the first time, discussed at this length with this much detail. It's the game that sold me on Sonic as a whole and I love it to bits so much still to this day that I'm currently writing a bit of a fan passion project, a storybook that's Sonic related but nothing like the modern stuff (though I do like it too, actually) I always had a hard time explaining why I love this game so much and it's story telling and character growth. It was one of those things you just had to experience yourself.
When I showed this game to my partner, who never saw this game in it's entirety, had to listen to me not trying to choke up over E-102 Gamma. Whether it's because of my love for innocent animals or my own history with an abusive father I don't know, but man does Gamma, a single instance character, drive home the emotional depth this universe can go....when SEGA allows it (thanks for that Penders :/ )
If you read this far I have a question, would you ever want to make more Sonic related videos? I remember Sonic Heroes having a unique approach to story telling with a story a lot of folks slept on. Not to mention Sonic Frontiers changing how we see Chaos FOREVER.

I have a very vivid memory of beating Gammas story with my grandma before she passed.
I asked her why he had to die, and she said "I'm not sure, but he brought those birds back together as a family."
And I know that's nothing like, profound or out there.. But as a child my grandma not having an immediate answer to why the hero just died, but still brought about a happy ending kinda sparked something in me as well.
Very interesting how shit like that falls into place.

only about half an hour into the vid but just wanted to say,
it feels a bit bizarre watching this as someone who's previously watched breakdowns of these games and the overall Sonic Lore by people who were already deep in the know since childhood and thus speak about it in a very matter-of-fact way, as opposed to you presenting it to us as if we're all equally as out of the loop as you are and discovering it alongside you.
When I first found out about Mobians, that "oh they as a species have a name now?" moment was only briefly in my own head but not at all acknowledged by the media telling me the information because those videos mainly came from the POV of someone with experience gently guiding me through a franchise they've been super involved in for years.
(NezumiVA and Lowart are both awesome channels with a ton of great Sonic videos btw)
That said, I'm rly enjoying what feels like you sharing your experience of coming back to this piece of your childhood many years later and finding out all of this lore for the first time.
