10000% true about training. I've only really done bodybuilding for 2 years. I notice a huge difference in all my bodyåarts when I stop doing things like heavy barbell rows. My back in a weel will flatten out and look smaller. No matter how good I feel a more isolated movement might work my lat or whatever it aint replacing just a normal 3-4 plate barbell row.

Nick Walker watched the Prague Pro last weekend and went home and kicked his dog after he got a look at Neckzilla. Imagine how tiny Nick's quads from the front will look standing next to this kid. Lol. And Neckzilla built all that muscle on his frame basically by accident. Chris Cormier said he basically had no muscle mind connection and was just pushing weight. What is this kid going to look like in 2 years working with Chris who's now teaching him that connection? Once Chris loads up this kids shoulders and helps him connect to build a bigger back, we are all going to be seeing something that we've never seen before imop.

The compound movements are the most fun. Hitting PR on a deadlift is 10x more mentally rewarding than hitting a PR on a single hand cable pull down.
I always tell people don’t focus on the final goal focus on small goals along the way. Those small goals are my PRs in the gym. They get me excited every week when I’m not seeing noticeable growth in my physique! I couldn’t imagine going in and doing isolation movements only week after week. I’d want to quit out of boredom haha.

Ben Chow hit it on the head...Bodybuilding is not so much about whether or not you compete, it's whether or not you love it! There are bodybuilders and there are competitive bodybuilders. I've been in love with bodybuilding and wanted to compete when I was younger in the 80s; but had no training other than magazines articles...I registered for a armature competition but injured my shoulder/collar bone and had no medical coverage to take care of it. I still love to work out and get a high from getting a great pump, the struggle, the suffering to see results. I am jealous of the pros but also celebrate with their victories.

When the first pics of Rubiel from the show came out, one of my first thoughts was that his biceps actually look like biceps. They didn’t look like big, soft blobs like so many other pros, including Derek. They look like what a lean biceps is supposed to look like. I mean seriously, so many pros have “big” biceps with no definition whatsoever. That’s not what the muscle looks like when it’s dry and conditioned. I don’t know what’s happened over the years, but a lot of pros have shit biceps these days (I’ve been following bodybuilding since ‘88).

MUCH of Sam's appeal is the fact that he's a very different cat in terms of his very HIT influenced style of training & NOT the ridiculous high volume training that unfortunately many of his contemporaries still do, which is based on TRADITION & not on logic/reason & with the resurgence of Mike Mentzer on YT this is a GREAT EXAMPLE for the young up & comers!!!

  • @beantown702

When I was 17 and a junior in HS, I got 3 of my friends into powerlifting. We just wanted to get as strong as possible. We watched videos of Pete Rubish doing 700lbs for reps in his basement in front of a washer and dryer. We watched Derek Kendall front squat 825lbs, we watched George Leehman talk about how he would tell himself that he's the reason his little brother was unalived, and then hit 800 for 10 reps. These dudes didn't care about views, they cared about LIFTING HEAVY 💩. That motivated us to go in the gym and lift heavy every time. (Not optimal but we got strong). Now, if I was coming up in powerlifting, I'd see nothing but weak, anime cosplayers selling me Young La hoodies. It's a different time.

Basic movements are generally beneficial and necessary. That said, hopefully people listening this podcast understands the difference between good and bad technique (and how wide spectrum it is). For instance, doing an actual barbell row (bent over and rowing horizontal towards your body) is a lot different from doing a "chicken dance" with the bar (which i see a lot at the gym). This came to mind after seeing comments about "rowing heavy in the next workout" with 3-4 plates a side.
