Riding The Grudge Trail Blind & Solo in Simi Valley | Mountain Biking California

- Our first stop on my road trip up to Sea Otter Classic is at the infamous Grudge Trail in Simi Valley, CA. I suggest going with someone your first time riding here, but have a look as I dissect the trail and work through some of the tougher sections ahead of time. This trail only gets better the more you ride it.

Another great job Tony 👍🏽. I know the feeling Tony I ride solo most of the time and there are sections you know you can do but it better to be safe then sorry 😐.
Exactly - glad to hear that John.
Another awesome video!! Can't wait for next week! 🤙🏼
Thanks Mike!
Good call on that drop. I had a bad crash riding solo deep into a secluded network of trails and hurt my knee. Could have been a lot worse if i broke anything and no one around for miles. 🤙🏽
Good point. The far far out rides always make me think twice solo.
Good job Tony nice video once again. Have a good one!!
Thank you Daniel! You too bud.
What a great video!! Love the loud hub!! Talk about rattler season! Be safe Tony!
Thanks! Appreciate you tuning in. ✔️
Love the phrase bringing your map to life!
Thanks! It’s what I’m hopefully doing. 😊
Love the content man! Keep it up!
Thanks and appreciate you tuning in!
Another excellent video Mate. Super Trail. 👍
Appreciate that Mark - as always bud! 🤜🤛
really enjoyed this vid! thanks :)
So true. Ride it all a diff day. Just rode it today and made the same smart choice.
7:12 lol. Next big mtb channel fur sure. Glad you're showcasing local trails man keep it up we all appreciate it.
Thanks for the vote of confidence Cameron. Appreciate that!
Beautiful trail!
It really is!
Sickness Brother 🤘🏽. awesome pit stop on that boulder 😉
Thanks man - more to come. 👊🏼
Nice.i remember that beginning part of the trail its all up hill. Although they are all up in the beginning unless your starting at the top on a dounhill ride.thanks for taking me doun memory lain
Right on!
Great video Tony!!
But the rattlesnake...
NOPE!!!!
Lol
Thanks Skye!
Some of that broken glass on the ground where you parked was probably from the drivers window in my truck. It is not the safest place to park. Being so close to the freeway as a quick escape there is a lot of smash and grab theft there. I suggest parking down Lilac Lane at the park parking. There is shade, a bathroom, safer, and you can ride Stagecoach Bonus trail to get to where you started or just the road as it is not far at all. There is also a couple of shorter but even more crazy trails on that side too.
As far as trailforks goes being good with unsanctioned trails. There is no regional mod for some of the areas around LA of all places so a particular user has been able to submit freerides that are not really trails, incorrect names and segmenting, etc.
Lots of great advice here and sorry to hear about your truck. Yeah jumping back on the highway is prime for theft - makes sense. I'll look into that parking area next time. Thanks for the heads up on Trailforks. In Orange County I'm used to it being more legit for legal trails.
@@TheOutsiderMTB With trailforks up here I noticed it's basically one Russian guy making a lot of bad submissions. He often submits his lunatic free rides as "trails".
Haha geez.
Awesome video, love all of them! I always loved the idea of mountain biking as a kid, but living in a flat state it wasn’t really possible. Moved to southern California about 3 months ago and the first thing I did was bought a bike, you should do a group ride one day man!
That’s great and glad you found the channel. Hopefully it’s been helpful. Group ride is something I’ve thought about for the future. 👌
*0:18** very cool transition*
*wish i had time to finish the video, will watch the rest after work after midnight when i'm back... can't wait*
Thanks - was fun making this one!
Just rode this one last thursday those drops are a lot bigger in person. My buddy also broke his wheel. we had a blast regardless. Great vid.
Great to hear!
This was an old one but it did give me the info to go ride up there. I am going to solo ride it as well. Will take it easy to check it out. It’s not that far for me but never ridden in Simi.
Sick video Tony
Thanks Carlos!
Well, this upload is a little old, but I have been watching tons of Tony’s rides, and this one is super close to home. I go over Santa Susana Pass on my road rides at least once or twice a week. I knew there were some kind of trails there, because I always see mtb riders gearing up at the parking spot. I ordered a new fs mtb last week. It’s my first mtb since 1997. I grew up riding trails like the Fullerton loop in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I used to spend a lot of weeks in Colorado training back then too, and did some good trail riding there, as cross training for road. MTB was barely a sport back then. I hope it won’t be too hard to get my wings back. I’m still looking for Tony’s uploads from Mt. Wilson, I did that MTB ride the first time when I was 14, in a group of course. I hope Tony keeps growing this channel, it’s got mad style.
Good stuff Robert!
The Outsider MTB Hi! got to ride the Grudge this morning. Very satisfying. I did hike that hardest steep section with the multiple drops, way above my skill level. I was able to ride the rest, including some smaller drops. It’s so close to home I think I’m going back tomorrow to explore the other trails.
@@Robert-kx8mp Nice Robert!
Your first go looked WAY better than mine haha good riding, you'll have to come back and check out everything else Rocky Peak has to offer! Hummingbird, Undertow and Animal - lower G are all must rides 🤙🏼
Thanks Justin - looking forward to getting back there soon man.
Shout out to Niblets, Great job!🤣👍
Haha thanks! That Niblets has some talent. 😉
Best guide for this I've seen! I just moved out to the Simi valley and have plenty of time nowadays so if you wanna redemption on that trail hit me up! I also don't wanna ride that alone first time.
Haha thanks Dana! And good to know!
I still haven’t hit the grudge yet just for that exact reason as you didnt want to ride it alone for the first time and it’s a bit of a drive but maybe next week for sure if I can pull myself away from skypark lol, nice work Tony
Yeah it helps to be with someone else. I’d say if you just take each section slowly you should be ok. Thanks Craig!
I just rode this yesterday for the first time. Started with Hummingbird as its a classic. Then the Grudge & then Undertow. They were all pretty gnarly haha. Can't wait to ride them again before it gets hot out there.
I've got to go back and hit those too. How was Hummingbird compared to The Grudge?
@@TheOutsiderMTB Its a nice techy warm up for the Grudge, has some drops & sections with lines to decide how much to challenge yourself. Has a long steep rock slab (60'?) that was fun, buddy got a clip of us coming down it on IG.
Sweet.
In my roadie days, I would ride past that trailhead once a week!
Ha nice!
The first time I rode the Grudge I went down on that steep section just before it and my handlebar jammed into my groin and had gnarly bruising down there for like a month, it really crushed my confidence and had to walk that little drop too. Haven't been back for redemption yet but want to get back and try it again!
This one's a battle for sure - get back out there Cameron. 💯
When doing your appreciation stations, you may want to level out the handle bars so you can get an unobstructed view. Love the videos man!
Ha - never thought about that before. 😉 Thanks!
It's so green, crazy different from when I got to ride it. Nice ride through, that trial is super sneaky with some features. That steep roller section towards the end looks like nothing in video haha, GoPros are depressing
Yeah it’s a different scene from the summer up there for sure. And about the GoPro effect- nailed it. When watching back a trail like this it’s always a trip how flat things look until you get a glimpse from the bottom. Thanks Stefan.
Good decision making🤔👍
Haha - I feel yuh. 😉
Great videos, and very inspiring. Currently shopping full suspension bikes so I can hit some of these trails as well. Have you done any trails in San Diego, or plan to at a later date?
I plan to hit San Diego soon. Hearing great things!
That's a shuttle day for me 😗.
More runs that way for sure. Good call.
You should message Tommy, it seems he has been there a couple of times. Great video, but sucks that your handlebars broke few weeks ago, now your rim.
Good call - I'm all good now btw - new wheels and tires this week. Feels pretty sweet.
@@TheOutsiderMTB are you going with a carbon rim? And what kind of tires?
Not carbon. Just put on some Maxxis’s. Check my Instagram for the new photo and details. @theoutsidermtb 😉👊🏼
Loved the video. I always ride more conservative when I'm riding on my own.
Please show us how your rear rim was repaired.
I got a warranty rim from ethirteen just this week. Putting it on with some new tires tomorrow. 👌
So did it kill your riding plans for that week?
@@partypartida Nope - I stopped on SLO and got things working for the rest of the week.
You're right. Perspectives from video are so deceptive. That section looked so tame until you looked up from the bottom!
GoPro definitely flattens things our from the POV angle!
That boulder jumped out of nowhere!
I know right?!
Yes first comment,
Thanks so much for share location
✔️
9:00 that’s my nightmare drop. Even now it’s lower, I can’t still hit it. I saw riders huck, some just roll it... i still hike that part... I got my left collar messed up.
It messes with your head - super steep rick into a drop - visually uncomfortable. I'm with you!
I'm late but nice vid
Thank you 😉✔️
Random old video comment. You should ride middles! It’s laguna’s only legal double black, and it’s on trail forks now!
How does it ride? This new?
@@TheOutsiderMTB its an old trail. It’s pretty steep and the drop that was built is gone, and it gets pretty loose. Not many people ride it so it may be a bit overgrown.
I see another new one next to it. Blue. I don’t think those are legal just cuz they are on Trailforks.
@@TheOutsiderMTB I see what you mean. Better safe than sorry
Better to be a bit careful than miss a whole lot of riding. 👍👍
Hate exactly what I kept telling myself. You back in the bike yet?
@@TheOutsiderMTB I can road and gravel ride, green type trails in 2 weeks. My doc knows how I ride and he doesn't want me to do my usual riding until mid June 😥😥
Sweet. He knows you. 😉
Also, I see you ride the YT Jeffsey. Do you think the Capra or the Jeffsey would be a better climber?
Jeffsy is the better climber, but Capra better for the downs. I chose the Jeffsy because of how much climbing I do here in Cali. I liked the all around option.
bruh.... is that another snake at 8:49 above your hand about 5 ft in front of you?
Ha I don't think so - i think that's the shadow of the bush, but you never know. I wouldn't be surprised though.
been planning on heading here for a while but have been too lazy to make the drive.
is the climb a PITA? it sure looked like it lol
What's this PITA?
@@TheOutsiderMTB pain in the a$$
Then YES. ✔️
@@TheOutsiderMTB haha thanks. definitely making a trip out there soon. thanks for the guide, first one I've seen that actually shows where to park and enter.
Happy to hear that man. I always wondered stuff like that when I moved here.
Trail builders must like Tool to name it The Grudge
😉✔️
The exit strategy panned out, but it was close.
So very close. 😉
I think you can ride with three broken spokes. Park Tool did a video about it recently while at Sea Otter.
Good to know. 👊🏼
Wanna go ride this again today?
Work life today. 🤷🏻♂️
I can see how "today we're riding a black trail" could be interpreted the wrong way
Nice vid...just cut down on the intro junk....using good judgment for sure!
