My 3 favorites of this video: your description of the serendipity of finding something you weren't looking for (probably why I love thrift stores), the t-rex jaw action, & that you caught the slightest view of your towel right there at the end (keeping your G-rating secure). The rest is good too. And I totally get the anxiety of selling vs not selling vs sold vs not sold...it's a struggle! Love you bro!
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I love any tricks you can give me.
Jake, I love your art and your channel is so inspiring and informative. Not only are you a great artist, but you are a great communicator. I have a house full of artists, so I pass along your vids to them too. Looking at your bookshelf, I want to go and buy all of the books that I don't have! Discovering a great new artist, approach, or book series is a special kind of joy, right? I liked what you shared about selling your originals, so true! Finally, I'm glad you got your shower in that day. :) Keep up the excellent work!
i remember the last book that you showed, at minutes 13:11 . it's artwork of the game called Jade Cocoon: story of tamamayu, on playstation 1 era. it's indeed has beautiful artworks inside the game and it's one of my favorite game back then. it has many cool creatures designs and environment etc. and thus katsuya kondo is also a character designer from ghibli studio who developed kiki's delivery service (know this right after i read some about it from wikipedia actually)
I love art books. Man your collection is extensive! I've been building up a list of books I want to collect, this video has helped add to it. I have a lot of the Walter T Foster vintage books, I would like to complete the set. I totally emphasize with you there on the original art. I put a lot of original work up this summer and hardly any sold. was glad to keep them but sad no one wanted them...
Great to look through the books. I spotted a lot that I have - and several that I'll have to look out for. Feel exactly the same about letting the originals go :)
Thank you for sharing your book collection. Honestly made me want to spend a week among all the books. Guess I'll have to hit the library or bookstore.
I spy Beekle! Love it!! :D Great video. Oh and my six year old daughter commented about one of your books tonight at dinner. She is refusing to get her hair trimmed and wants it to keep growing, mind you it is pretty long now and I said to keep it healthy she needs to trim it. "Oh," she said. "So if I don't take care of it, I'll turn out like the girl in the book with all the mice in her hair?" "Exactly, before you know you'll have a field of mice living in your locks," I replied. "Cool," she said I think my logic may have back fired! :P PS... she loves that book!
This is so great! Thank you Jake for sharing. Im gonna go look for some of the stuff you have on your shelf. FLCL is my favorite anime and it never really occurred to me that there would be art books for it. Also I definitely need that skull book too! Thanks again and have a good one
omg that first book the cover is from my city is "Bom jesus" is very famous world wide because of all the stairs is really beutifull and fun to walk to the top.
Hey Jake ! Great video, I love when artists show their reference books, really good inspiration. It makes me think "buy more books ! Don't always look on the internet!" ^^ Those books are from years ago ? I mean, do you regularly buy books since like 15 years or did you begin your collection more recently ?
Oh, boy. So much good stuff! I got the James Gurney instructional books too, and almost all of his Dinotopia books. Iain McCaig's, the classic trilogy Art of Star Wars books too... By the way, don't you have the big coffee table Making Of books? They're fantastic! I gotta get myself that SW Costumes book did you see it? There's also one about the model shop. My most treasured is the Star Wars Chronicles by Deborah Fine. It's big, though, so it's a bit unwieldy. Another book that you might like is the Warrior and Warlords, by Angus McBride. Fantastic illustrator. About books vs. online image search... I don't particularly agree with your POV. I think you will find tangencial stuff online as well! But books have helped me in finding something specific, that I know I have. So instead of spending too much time online looking for that thing, I just go to that book. How do you print your art prior to painting them? If it's in an inkjet printer, have you tried laser? I love the dark black toner prints. Inkjet prints usually look washed out to me. EDIT: Oh, cool dinos, btw. Love that T-Rex. Now I want one of those! xD
You left your "Drawing for Dummies" book in the drawer... :P I have a small amount of those Books you showed us as well as almost all the Heavy Metal mags which are my Favorites. Good Luck and keep up the Art.
So far I have drawing ideas by Mark baskinger and Scott Robertson how to draw environments and sketching objects from your imagination. As well as drawing basics and video game art.
Thanks for letting us know you showered lmao. Awesome books though!! I hope to have a "library" like that one day. Also I know what yoh mean about original art. Back in high school I didnt do the Senior Art show cuz it was to sell things pretty much and I could just not part with any of them. Its wierd how attached we become with our art. Its like a small part of us.
Loved the video: loved getting to see your books. That one "groundworks of folly cooly" seemed really nice How did you manage to find books like that though? Like the French or the Japanese ones - annoying question ik but I'd be interested so I could look into getting myself some better art books :P
13:10 The game looked like that one old PS game called Jade Cocoon... that had very interesting gimmick (but in the practice was pretty boring really... I had that game) Dunno for sure if those images were from it.
Nikkibane Reference books are cheap, educational books are usually mid-range($25USD) to very expensive, "art of" books vary greatly depending on supply and demand. If your town has a Barnes and Noble(or similar book store) you can get all of them there, if not then online is your best bet.
That artist struggle of needing to be unique but find out you have a ton of creatives just like you. Which is cool cause now you have family that understands you and you can be best buds; but now your uniqueness has been threatened and you feel depressed about it. Which then you feel really self centered which threatens your cool calm lone wolf persona you have in your head which only shows how really self centered you really are. Then you get all pissed off at yourself for your own arrogance and then after you've calmed down, your miffed that you get so emotional about this stuff and how much it gets in the way of your work. So you do art to express all this emotion and it sells for millions. (Well in your head it sold for millions.)
Hayao Miyazaki The man the Myth the Legend this guy is a genius. I love his works they have such emotion in them. Then the FLCL book I love FLCL too Fooly Cooly lol that stuff is just madness, it kind of reminds me of the movie dead leaves.
Where do you get your art books? And if it is the internet, then how do you find the books? Like, did you see them somewhere, heard someone talk about them or did you just click on them when you were buying another book and saw them in the "you might also like"-section?
***** I buy them online, in bookstores, at conventions, and from other artists. I just poke around, look at other artist's collections, and go to websites that talk about artbooks.
My art/ graphic novels. East of West books 1-3 Saga books 1-4. Scott pilgrim. 1-5. In real life. Book one Legend of korra: Art of the animated series Eattish sketch book. Drawings 2. Eight sketch books And a it of comics.
Tiger Shark Studios I bought it a few years ago online, not sure if they're still available. There might be information somewhere on his blog: mattpostsarthere.blogspot.com/

Great points about the image reference books. That section of my book collection is very limited. Time to expand!

Thanks for letting us know you showered lmao. Awesome books though!! I hope to have a "library" like that one day. Also I know what yoh mean about original art. Nice! Would be cool to see you talking about each one. LoL. But that would be ask too much. =D

Thanks for your reaction! It's a shame that we don't have the kind of conventions in the Netherlands that you have in America.
