This is flat footed singing. No gimmicks, no extras, just a man, a mic, and his voice. Greatest of our time right here.

The current singers CAN sing like that.
But they have to turn on AUTO-TUNE, first.
And they must have a plethora of engineers and backup singers covering for them... and JLo is the biggest one doing it. She should take notes.

I love Barry White...and more babies were made to his sound probably than any other singer, but Luther...I don’t think I need to finish that. LOL Barry gave you sexy bass, but Luther could take a melody and remake it or give you the most killer harmonies. He could find a spot in a song and elevate that tune to another level, but it’s his live artistry that really stands out. His move from backup singer to Star is just amazing. All the stars he wanted to perform with later started seeking him out for a duet.

@@michaelb2685 ... I remember Barry from back in the 1970s. His voice, songwriting, and musical arrangements were great. I remember when the nearly all white CBS network used his music "Love's Theme" for the Masters.
I was a young black man walking tall.

@@marcusrex77 Funny you mentioned JLo...she burns me LOL!!! I’m use to dance professional and I watched her audition to be a Fly-girl and it was just he worst. She should have been cut, and they asked her to sing. She’s a manufacturer star. I don’t know if it was P-Diddy, but she has more drive than talent, IMO. She was the weakest Fly-Girl and the singing matched her dance. 😂

Luther was incredible (but so were like 100 thousand other artists in a variety of genres at the exact same time) - the tribalism (now vs then) in all of these vintage artist's videos is tiring.
MAYBE in straight up top 40 pop music there is a case to be made. but there is, and always has been, a VERY healthy and incredibly talented r&b, soul, jazz and pop scene before Luther and after.

After being told I have no soul, I don't care.. the delivery man can have what I don't as long as I can enjoy what he has with him. In the end, the brothers keep me a lady, and I'll let them, and the good sisters humble me any day of the week. I wish someone might do a fade of the last share. I look at greatest singer lists of all time and I see the usual names like MJ, Whitney, Elvis, Freddie, Celine, Marvin, Aretha........all superb singers no question. But where is Luther on these lists - down at like 50 or 60. He didn't even make the list of one publication's 100 greatest singers of all time. But some girl named Karen O was ranked 39th............I kid you not. After listening to this performance anyone with functioning hearing has to agree this is one of the greatest voices ever recorded. This is when singing was real. As a musician, I appreciate artists who still take the time to actually use their voice to sing. Luther was one of a kind and arguably the greatest male vocalist ever. I’m 30 but i grew up on that real singing. It’s a shame the younger generation won’t get this type of singing.

Ho scoperto la sua grandezza qualche anno fa. Che voce. Che sensibilità. Che interprete. Che Dio lo accolga in paradiso

Luther had them women shaking lol. It don't seem natural for someone to sing that flawlessly and LIVE, just amazing! Dionne was looking exactly like her cousin Whitney in this video to me❤😍.

Who are these 220 people who downvoted this? This is simply one of the greatest live performances ever. The singer's confidence in their own voice and complete control over their own voice, the powerful connection with his audience, the runs, the incredible transitions from the low to the high notes, just incredible. Luther was at his absolute peak here and you can tell that everyone in that room knew they were watching one of those once-in-a-lifetime performances.

Those guys couldn't even be background singers in Luther's band. Dude used to sound check for HOURS to make sure his singers were on point!

A superb performance from one of the greatest R&B/ Soul singers to ever grace the microphone. How fortunate we are to have this live memory of him at his best. Thank you Luther!
