- Part of the fear of heights is that mad desire to jump from them.
Alenka Artnik is a Slovenian world record holding freediver, and the deepest female with a monofin: she has dived on breath-hold to 122 meters. Only a few days after that historic dive, we filmed this exploration of the strange desire to jump whenever we find ourselves at a great height. Turns out we'd both had dreams where we did just that, and we both experienced that in water, you can give into it.
This was filmed at Deans' Blue Hole in the Bahamas, which is 200 meters deep, enough to give anyone vertigo. Florian Burghardt kept us safe and helped with all kinds of things behind the scenes. The music is 'Revelations' by Tristan Barton.
Find out more about Alenka's incredible story from the rise of the depths here: onjustonebreat...
#vertigo #freediving
i was many many years old when today i learned that vertigo isn't actually the fear of heights, but that feeling of not knowing what's up or down. Fear of heights is called 'acrophobia' - wish i'd known that before i made the thumbnail...
I only know vertigo as a state of feeling very dizzy.
I've experienced it once during a ascent from a scuba dive. I knew from reference of my team and through training that my body position was horizontal and stable but my body was telling me I was going through a rollercoaster very quickly. I recognised what was happening (this can happen when there's a pressure difference in the inner ear) and it was sort of mind over matter at that point. After a while it subsided and I was able to continue the ascent.
I'm not very fond of heights either and drop-offs during scuba diving give me a funny feeling too.
I can see how people with a stronger response than me with being high up (or even better having nothing underneath them) will make them feel disorienting or dizzy or maybe even extreme dizzy like the physically caused vertigo.
@@R_T_HEIDE that sounds petrifying! happened to a friend of mine who burst his eardrum; all he could do was grab the dive line and follow that up.
It was more of a surprise, I had enough air with me and it happened on the shallow part of the dive so that wasn't a problem either. That's the part of freediving I'm hesitant about, not having enough gas with me 😅 Now there's a scary situation.
"Vertigo" is just dizziness. Acrophobia can lead to it, but it's not a fear of heights, as most people think.

this is the best underwater video in the world, kudos to the cameraman and especially to the lady

I have never been close to experience anything like this, and I most likely never will, unfortunately. But watching this, I feel a primal attraction, a longing... but also a primal fear, for standing right at the edge of the abyss and letting go. It is so beautiful and peaceful, and yet so dangerous. Fantastic work! Thank you for showing us the depths!
Thank you, that was a lovely comment to read!
Я не знаю что написать потому что не знаю зачем вы это делаете. Когда смотришь дух захватывает.👍
I drowned when I was watching...
sorry bout that

Many times!
My next door neighbor friend was into cave diving. As we became adults and moved away from each other, I’d see her rarely during hometown visits. But one year recently I hadn’t seen or heard from her for awhile. Her brother let me know she drowned during a cave diving trip. Either got stuck or lost and ran out of air. Her swim partner found her. Scary way to go out.
sorry to read that - cave diving is very specialised, very tricky. I couldn't do that, i think.
Amazing and frightening at the same time!
Yes, it was like that filming it, too
One of my worst nightmares : deep dark water.
Oh but it’s so lovely in there

This work was so well done that I lost touch with the fact that she was holding her breath the entire time. The duration of that held breath alone is already a dream in itself.

Technically speaking "Acrophobia" is the intense fear of heights, "Vertigo" is the subjective feeling of spinning around a vertical axis which induces nausea and vomit, and "Dizziness" is a subjective sensation of unsteadiness or postural unstability but less severe than "vertigo" 😁🙏👍🤓
Found that out about 1 minute after I published the video - hence the pinned comment.
Wow I can't believe she held her breathe that long
world champion - she's a bit special
Vertigo is not fear of heights. Acrophobia is fear of heights.
Vertigo is when everything around you feels like it is spinning -

that ledge is about 18 meters deep
Это просто потрясающе красиво и потрясающе страшно! Можно узнать что это за место такое?? Это пещера в океане, где это такое? Что за глубокая дыра?
It’s called Deans blue hole, it’s in the Bahamas
A few years ago, I randomly discovered freediving, after never thinking about it for a second in my life, and it has been one of those singular things I've wanted to do the most, out of everything I haven't attempted yet.
Whenever it's hard to believe in this experience, I'll sometimes watch this video and it gives me the trust in our world, that there will always be extraordinary things to discover and do.
So much of the human experience-desire, curiosity, adventure, discovery-is beautifully captured in just 3 1/2 minutes. Many thanks!
yes, life is full of wonder, not just out there, but also in your mind. I'm often surprised about the things that pop up when I'm holding my breath
Its not height I'm scared of, it's depths! Only joking. I am scared of going up ladders, onto high buildings, up spiral staircase within an old castle. The fear if I can call it that starts to create a disconnection from the real world and logic. It's as though I am going to die, if I keep getting higher? Sometimes I have challenged myself, like on Striding Edge or Jacks Rake - and afterwards its like a new way of being, as though its a different person? But the feeling of apprehension never goes away. ruclips.net/video/iMwe1TLko1s/видео.html
i know what you mean - logic and sense seem to disappear.
Thanks, Daan. Absolutely amazing!

this video is absolutely terrifying. but made me release that i too desire the things that i fear.

i would love to sky dive but scared of heights.
i think i could put a desire with any of my fears, come to think about it.
interesting, i shall have a think about this and work out which is stronger, desire or fear.
I still fear water, but have moved towards desire so much that the fear is now just an interesting undertone, a spice that livens things up

Hello 👋 beautiful video
Thank you Riyad!
Oh my goodness, you have touched on something that I have struggled with my whole life -- that insane voice in my head that says: "Jump". When I walk over a bridge or along a cliff over the ocean, I ask my partner to hold my hand and not let go because I am afraid that I will jump. On the one hand, I recognize it as a fear of losing control of my life. On the other hand, one of my dreams is to fly like a bird in their three dimensional world. Not many people understand that "insane voice" but you got it.
apparently, the French call it "l'appel du vide" - the call of the void. Common enough to have a name then, be it in French. We are not alone - let's all meet on a bridge in Paris and try not to jump.
Yeah, I hate it. part of me inching towards the edge, part of me in fear clawing at the ground to stop myself. hate it, hate it hate it.
Excellent how long you can hold your breath🥈🏅🥉🥇🥉🏅🥈🏅🥉🥇
Alenka can hold her breath for over 6 minutes
I saw quite a lot of people having different opinion on FB but I don’t know why I’ve a feeling that you would pick the first pic for your thumbnail and you eventually did!
Such a great piece of work again! Can’t wait to visit Dean’s blue hole and bump into you guys in Vertical blue someday!

Ok I am a SCUBA Diver. However, when I am in water I feel the great fascination. I love using this three-dimensional space. The different perspectives I can take under water is just outstanding. It is not the fishes and wrecks and other things that satisfies me though. I feel the deeply connected to the ocean- under water even ten times more.
I recognise that feeling!
Same here. I was diving off the coast of Mauritius some years back where the seabed disappears into an inky blackness, an abyss that was terrifying and inviting at the same time. No small fish, of which there were thousands, would swim out over that edge so, I took the hint. A whole new set of emotions, often conflicting but, made me feel more alive than ever.
This would scare the bejeezus out of me!
Being underwater without full lungs of air you don't float but have to swim hard to get back up to the surface!
I would have pooped myself multiple times if I was making this film!! 💩😱😄
Hahaha, feeding the fishes, we call that!
Exactly!

The underwater environment is magical, and the likeness to flying is awesome, and flying hang gliders is very similar with a different set of constraints, and normally speed, unless you are flying a helicopter, which is magical in its own right, like being a few feet off the ground, yet not going anywhere, but flying as if you were underwater.
I love the flying bit - but helicopters make me nervous
I have acrophobia so I have to say that was well thought out and performed. You added a whole new perspective to the whole thought process. Thank you
