  • More of the Forever Winter today as we venture into two new maps. Will get out with the goods? Will it all be a horrible end where our innards are used as decoration for a psychotic medical unit calling itself Franz?
    Also remember this is the dev build and NOT the early access release which is out next week on the 24th.

    The cityscape from 11:19 onwards is just absolutely terrifying and incredible looking. Looks straight out of the Future War sequences of the Terminator movies. Kudos to the developing team and art direction.

      The game will probably be like zero sievert. Get missions to collect items to get $ and reputation to unlock better gear / items from that faction. If there is no diffaculty slider then expect it to be darksouls or "GTFO" where if you mess up you fully know you messed up ​@@Gavinbelson

      Gosh I hope they can polish the AI and clunkyness. The art style is amazing. Hopefully there is a lot of side objectives too. Can imagine going alone must be tense

    Wanders away from his team and falls off of the bridge in front of enemies… gets dropped… gets revived… stays around enemies… alerts enemies to his team’s presence… aggro’d enemies force a firefight… then says “not sure how it was my fault” 😂… based on your battlefield awareness this statement makes a *ton* of sense…

      The Forever Winter is a co-op tactical survival horror shooter.
      So it is both a shooter and survival horror

      It should still have decent shooting mechanics. They heavily advertised things like boss battles and combat oriented missions. Stealth is all well and good, but it's obvious that they intend for you to do a decent amount of shooting.

    Will be good to try tactics like firing to draw them towards you. Have a path for escape get them to follow so yout team mates can make their way forward and you up with them via a different route. I am gonna enjoy experimenting and hopefully finding a team of people to play with.

      @@nunyab1zn3ss2 But this is the sort of stuff the Early Access program can do. It's hard for a team of 20 to quality test properly. So as long as people are willing to accept that it is ROUGH, then we can all help out, to bring it to that promising vision.

      @@jakubkvacala1880 It depends on how far along the project is. When you create systems in a game, you need a good foundation. After a certain point, so much has been added on top of the original framework that you can't just patch an issue out. The current systems for combat and enemy behavior seem pretty lackluster for how far along the game seems to be.

      tarkov when it first hit early access looks and played much different from tarkov just a few years ago, and now its changed even more. if the devs back up their callout to the industy i believe this game could have a interesting future

    This is... extremely rough, but the skeleton of a fantastic game is here. They've clearly put more passion and effort into the art and design than the actual gameplay but they were up front about that from the get-go. Really looking forward to supporting this project.

    Great gameplay showcasing how you should run when the ods are not in your favour and evade large forces to escape with the single pack of cigarettes and pretzels from the one guy you killed.
    Can't wait to give this a try when it's out.

    Good god! when those huge mechs come over the hill. So epic and atmospheric. I hope they can polish the AI and the character movements so it looks like they interact with the terrain. Also extraction needs a little cinematic so you feel the rush of accomplishment.

    I really like, that you're not the Hero, a soldier or a mech, that you're at the bottom of the food Chain.
    Imo, that makes the game more immersive and 'realistic'. Kinda feels like how the normal ppl must feel in war time, ppl like Beirut, jugoslavia etc. during the war in their cities.

    The AI walking right past them or looking at them then running away is so funny. Its crazy if they spot you they will hunt you down but if they don't spot you their dumb as a box of rocks. If they had good AI they would die more often.

      The AI has a weighted system to determine if they should engage. Basically if the enemy AI faction see's or knows their opposite number is moving around they will prioritise attacking them over you. If you however get too close or shoot near them or loot near them they will kill you first and then move on.

      @@Gavinbelson well that's how this game is supposed to be played. In that sense, is not a game for everyone: picking your battles, sneaking around, crouching, avoiding enemies. And that's totally fine. Bugs and game problems aside, it was a good gameplay.

      Can you swap guns on the fly? I noticed you can't pick up guns depending on your rig, but I haven't seen enough inventory management to know if it's possible to drop your current weapons.

      There is a mechanic that enemies evaluate the threat you pose. Bigger guns means more attention from them, so there's a good reason to stick with as little gun as you think you can get away with. (By my inner loot goblin was screaming at the screen too.)

      I believe that if you have any good standing rep with any of the faction, their troops will ignore you as long you don't aim or engage with them

      A 'quick negotiation' option would be sweet. Make otherwise 'vendor trash' items like cigarettes' or candy into potential tools for passage. (Especially if there's a marker for 'bribed non-hostile' so you can tell them apart.) Or extort you for medical supplies to pass.

    Dat shotty tho. Pretty peak in the hallways. Game looks so good. Excited for the beta. Controls do look rough though. I kno the devs are working on shoulder swapping in the future so, hopefully a lot of the small things get fixed along the way.

      It seems difficult to really be stealthy as there's no concrete cover system and the AI is bit strange in their behavior. Enemies just do random 180s without much rhyme or reason. Hopefully their movement is made a bit more smooth, that way it's easier to predict where they'll be moving or facing at a given time.

    I’m surprised how tanky the scav is. I feel they should make the human enemy fire more damaging or lower the shield levels. Raise the tension and make it a bit more realistic

    While graphics, design, atmosphere and sound are in a really good state, everything else looks and feels janky as hell.

      @@Lesa465 Early access is more for identifying bugs and addressing them. The current state of the game seems like it could've used more feedback from the initial in-house playtesting, since the working-as-intended game mechanics aren't very impressive.

      I couldn’t agree more. Everyone is defending it stating “early access” but it’s not even that… it’s early alpha and is way too early for release. They should’ve released a demo or public play tests instead of dropping EA $27 title.

    I am a little confused on the first mission you guys did. There really was no room for stealth, there were so many enemies, no real good places to hide, and it was just a long corridor with some verticality to it...
    I am so stoked to play the game, I can't wait to get me and my friends in it :) But that level and your options available to you really stunk hard :P

      They honestly would have survived if his buddy 7:46 hadn't fired a round. The squad was leaving the hallway and could have healed him. Even at 7:00 they walk directly at them, causing enemy suspicion meter to spike to full instead of just chilling. Mechanics and level design can be a little better, but man were there some mistakes.

    fight is alway a bad move in this game i think. npc enemie alway have the number and more reinforcement...
    also dev team should at least make indicator show that the enemie detect us or not.
    like they see you but don't want to engage you or they just don't see you.

      So, this looks interesting. But where is the "fun" part? It just looks like your are basically avoiding damage sponge mobs the whole time. Then when you actually get to shoot something, it looks not even mid. Im just confused, graphics look cool tho.

      @@Gavinbelson That's the fun. Being in fear of your life, in high tension, trying to survive harsh conditions. (While being completely safe in reality because it's a video game). It's not going to be fun for everyone. But I'm looking forward to this so much.

      There are indicators above the npcs(when interested in players), they'll go up from question mark to exclamation then shooting. The timings do appear to be dynamic on how alert the enemy is. The videos are of our first runs and we were working things out during play.

      @@namaan_taw8259 the indication will also change depending on your weaponry, you're assigned a threat value based on the gear you're carrying, so the more lightly armed you are, the less likely they're going to straight to gunning you down from the onset.

    It makes sense that this game wont be for everyone, its wholly different from tarkov and others as its whole point it "you are not that guy" you wont be good at shooting as its made out to be a last resort, in other words, its a rats game and i love ratting in eft.

    The AI is atrocious... The soldiers are just running next to you and seeing absolutely nothing even though there are bodies everywhere... You'd expect them to be alert and cautious and to engage anything crawling around 1m from them...

      Ideally, though I feel like it might be a limitation. Like, will the AI know how to differentiate between allies killed by enemy factions? And when new NPCs come in after hearing their allies get into a firefight and see the corpses, should they also be suddenly on high alert, and in turn, making a certain location a hotbed of suspicion even after the initial fight finished, where every single spawned-in patrol may or may not be on high alert that kills on sight? If that happens, I think it'd make the AI feel even more jank and unpredictable than it already is. This isn't even about realistic behavior, just that NPCs should be consistent even if it's consistently dumb, which is something the game's AI already struggles with (like how enemies swivel around unpredictably and don't telegraph their idle-to-movement states whatsoever).

Ultimately they need to do a lot of work to make the AI feel believable and not completely immersion breaking (when they walk next to you and miss seeing you completely) but equally they need to have an element of predictability otherwise you have the situation we saw in the other video of AI standing in a doorway and immediately roasting the player in 1 second as he loots in the room even thought in other circumstances you can literally walk past AI and it does nothing...
      I still think if this is a horror more than a shooter game then corpses should be focal points and create suspicion on the part of the AI which translates into a heightened state of awareness and faster engagement times. But consistency is key...and we're not there at all.

    The gameplay seems very hard and maybe only a select group of gamers will really get into it unless they add something like decoys and other items that can force the OpFors to engage each other, especially as the current AI in these playthroughs seem sticky to the players.

      @@Gavinbelson The tension, similar to a horror game. You want to not get spotted and if you do get spotted you want to end the engagement as fast as possible and move to another safe location. I think a game where players have had a similar mindset in the past would be DayZ where the mildest of combat would kill you so you wanted to make the combat as uneven in your favor as possible when possible and not enter combat that isn't in your favor.

    in my Exp when you get a game like this in test at this point in it's dev cycle ... roughly a year till real release. the bones are here... plenty to adjust with the right feedback and communication skills. saying "it sucks ass" isn't enough if thats the best you can do take a seat till full release.

    So i am really curious here, if you don't take your secondary shotgun, I have seen a few bodies with weapons that said no rig or no space to equip. If you leave said shotgun behind are you able to pick up their weapons and use em?

    no matter what this game is trying to be, if you can shoot and move it should feel good and responsive. I love the art style and environments, but the dumb AI is probably the only reason you are able to survive because you sure as hell aren’t gonna get out of a raid alive because of the stealth mechanics this game has.. I’d love this game to succeed and I want to play it, but why does every cool game these days has to be an EA title..in this case it’s more alpha than anything else

    i do wish the revive time was 60 seconds and not 30 as that is too short to give teamates any time to fight off opposition and do a 6 sec reresection

    It's a shame about the water mechanic. I don't want to play a game that punishes me with a total loss of my progress if I stop playing for a week. I would have played this if the water mechanic didn't punish me for having a life, or playing other games

      Yeah, for solo or private play, you should have the option to disable the water mechanic or at least have modifiers to make it how you want to play the game. Either it having it punishing for hardcore grinders or super lenient and almost never runs out for casual players.
      For community servers, I think it would be great to have it as intended, cause then adds a new dynamic were everyone has to contribute to help the underground survive, exactly as how the setting is presented, being a dystopian futuristic survival game. It would be even cooler if they added legit consequences too like the server would shutdown if no one kept the water going and you had to wait til they opened up a new server the next week to play again. Would make for an interesting history too, cause you can see which servers lasted the longest, and the devs could even post stats congratulating the server of players that kept things going.

      @@gliath888 I'm not sure they have anything like a community server planned. From what I understand based on their recent Q&As, even when you party up with friends and are in the host's hub, each players own hub still has their individual progression and progress. There's not really any community aspect to the hub, at least not yet.
      Tbh, I don't mind the water mechanic or any other sustain mechanic... except that they should be based on in-game time or cycles, not real life. Even with 30 days of water, sometimes people need to take breaks or maybe they're playing a new co-op campaign game that just came out with friends. I have a friend who is currently without Internet while moving, and he'll be without for like 45 days by the end of it. Real life happens. I sure as shit wouldn't be inclined to come back to a game that decides it's harder to come back because real life took priority.
      If it's based on in-game time, it doesn't have to be so long. It's supposedly pretty easy to hit max water, according to closed beta players... so just pulling numbers out of thin air, say each hour in raids is 6-12 hours in-game time. Even if that gets lowered to a week of max water you'd have 14-28 hours real-time in raids before water ran out. That's probably even on the high side, but the point is it can easily be disconnected from real-world time so people aren't punished for touching grass.

      the current max amount of upkeep you can have is 80 days so it's pretty forgiving.

      I mean like any game it can't be for everyone. I know later missions do involve you having to engage specific targets like assassinating officers, destroying specific enemies and other tasks. Early on you are encouraged to hide and sneak but it does become more mixed as you improve your gear and get rep with the factions for their equipment unlocks.
