    just lost my boy...I adopted him the end of last year 2021 from a shelter, he was naked when I got him, and not very active...the avian vet could not find anything obvious. He slowly went downhill and died while I was holding him a few days ago. He had a good appetite until a week before he passed. They refused to do a necropsy because he was already dead for 12 hours when I brought him to the vet, and they said it was too late. I am so heartbroken. He came damaged and I failed to help him. Sweetest parrot I ever had. Thank you for your knowledge, hopefully some day I will find another Ekkie, I really love their personality...

      Im so sorry to hear that, I wish I could ease the pain. You are not alone; the bonding and abrupt heartbreak this species can bring is traumatizing to most pet owners and scientists alike. I work with veterinarians on a daily basis in regards to Eclectus care, and unfortunately there is not enough public information- especially not in the textbooks. The fact they refused a necropsy- says a lot. Im sorry, so sorry.

    Just found your channel. Like this recipe and am going to try it with my umbrella cockatoo. I just adopted her 3 weeks ago and she's a very picky eater when it comes to her vegetables. No problem with her pellets though. My question is can i substitute all purpose flour with almond flour?

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus  Год назад

      You would be increasing the fat and calories by an exponential level. Not appropriate for even a cockatoo (which can have more fat than Eclectus), so it is not advisable.

    Just found your channel and adopted a 7 month old male Ekkie last month (I had one over 15 yrs ago and tragically lost him when he accidentally flew away). Is buckwheat groats, wheat berries and lentils (soaked and cooked) healthy for them?? I thought I had an idea about healthy diet (I did a lot of research in the early 2000’s) but apparently I still have a lot to learn!!

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus  Год назад +1

      Hello, Buckwheat, Groats, and wheat berries should be kept to a minimum as they type of fiber they contain can significantly slow digestion and lead to health complications. Lentils can also be added to the diet, but in strict moderation as they are a anti-nutrient (they slow the absorption of other nutrients), contain digestive irritating compounds, and are a incomplete protein. Because of their palatablility, you will find that they will eat lentils and forgo other more balanced food choices- leaving the diet with missing elements.

    Hi! I made this for my Max yesterday and he LOVES it! He's 21, has a naked chest but we've had him for only 2 years, and he's really not a picky eater at all. Went straight for it! Does the red palm oil go into the bread or is it just used to grease the pan? Also, is there a substitute oil for it? I looked everywhere for it and I may just order it online next time I bake this. Thank you so much!

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus  2 года назад +1

      It is just to grease the pan. You can use canola oil if you like.

    Definitely trying this bread for my picky boy. I made a bird bread with chickpea flour would this be healthier than all purpose, or about the same? Thanks!!

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus  2 года назад +1

      Please do not use chickpea flour (or feed chickeas) in any real quantity. Chickpeas are a great source of iron, Iron is extremely dangerous- Ekkies are prone to a condition called ‘iron storage disease’ more than almost any other parrot on earth. Iron accumulation in liver the causes hepatic lysosomes to get damaged, leading to the release of ionic iron. This is nearly impossible to cure. Causes are often a diet rich in iron; spinach, legumes (especially garbanzo beans), fortified pellets and cereals, even quinoa (which is why I ask people to keep ratios small and focus on fresh vegetables and fruit).

    So we can give fruits every day right ??
    .. Thx for the info -- so MANY RUMOURS

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus  2 года назад

      Fruit and vegetables (culinary definition) are made up of water, fiber and sugars. All sugar is treated the same in the body- being turned into glucose. Glucose is the most readily available source of energy because it does not need to be broken down in the same manner as protein or fat. So when you feed fruit- it does not make them hormonal, etc- but does give them a great source of easily digestible energy. Some people will tout fruits having a bad rap because of things like their vitamin C content- when in fact, broccoli has more vitamin C than an orange! (broccoli also has more fiber, which we want to avoid for ekkies as it slows the digestion and causes hyperabsorbtion leading to a crop and nutrient imbalance), but most ekkies require vitamin C as their livers do not function well and therefore it can not be produced in the liver like other species of parrots). So can you feed fruit? Short answer is yes. But what types and quantity are specific. No, you can not feed passionfruit all day, everyday- fiber is too high. This may sound complex, but it is really quite simple. I have oodles of articles available for as little as dollar a month (delivered once a week) dedicated to Eclectus on the patreon site: www.patreon.com/eleganteclectus

    I rarely use white sugar (or brown sugar/cane sugar of any sort) in my home. Do you have an opinion on using the sugar substitute Stevia, which is extracted from a leafy green plant?
    I have a male and female 3 year old Eclectus which we adopted 6 weeks ago and are about to hand raise a 4 week old chick we pick up in a day.
    I'm very anxious about giving them a proper diet! Along with their twice a day serves of fresh food I've been giving them stalks of herbs and shrubs fresh cut from the garden. They spend up to an hour demolishing the vegetation and chewing on the stalks. I've been giving them mint (which grows 50cm high in my garden) pineapple sage, trumpet vine and vietnamese mint. Do you think that is OK?

    • @pearlredmoonartist6430
      @pearlredmoonartist6430 2 года назад

      ....oh, and also Rosemary and Curry Plant, they will chow down on those too.

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus  2 года назад

      Great question. Unfortunately stevia can cause serious illness in Eclectus and should be avoided at all costs. The process by which it is digested is known to cause dehydration, crop imbalance, kidney and liver damage.
      The issue with garden shrubs is that many are toxic- trumpet vine is no exception and should not be anywhere near an eclectus. A rule of thumb is to look in your local regular grocer, if the food item is there, it is likely ok. But trumpet vine (or as many call it: cow itch vine) is very toxic to Eclectus and will easily damage the liver, potential paralysis or down right stop their heart. Please remove it at once and never give it again.

      @@ElegantEclectus shriek! Thankyou, so glad I asked and you were able to give me this very specific advice. They'll definitely never get the vine again. I'll make the bread with the white sugar as in your recipe.
      Thankyou, especially from Ruby, Tasman and baby Archie!

    And what about chia seeds?

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus  Год назад

      That is a great question that is not often spoken about! Chia seeds are notorious for the gel they form when exposed to water. They actually absorb 10 times their weight in water. Ekkies have a unique anatomy, in which they need soluble fiber and high water content to digest properly. When chia seeds are ingested dry- they can actually create a crop dysfunction and make your Eclectus very sick (both short term and long term). When chia seeds are ingested wet, the fiber alone is the type we need to be very cautious about- as they are difficult to digest and cause a hyper-abosrbtion of nutrients. In summary- chia seeds should not be fed to eclectus.
