The emotional state of Eclectus: How emotional pain impacts behaviour
Просмотров 7992 года назад
People tend to think of trauma as something frightening, however it may be mere exposure to human emotion to negatively impact an Ekkies ability to process information properly. Daily exposure to seemingly innocent stressors may overwhelm Eclectus, leaving them feeling upset or helpless as it is their sole duty is to provide their ‘mate’ with safety, security and sustenance. Free flight and free feed is paramount for Eclectus. Food is never limited and focus is put on variety and everything in moderation. This is a snapshot of a potential menu for a day- quantities are not specific. It is a bit more complex as it has a lot to do with the size of the chop, preparation, etc. But birds (like humans) have a natural sweet ttooth.- you can however pour a bit of puree over the food and mix together. The puree will mask much of the vegetables.There are oodles of tricks and tips on my patreon site, www.patreon.com/eleganteclectus

    Hey there 👋. My family and I have been taking care of an Eclectus parrot ourselves. His name is Jarvis and he’s 3 years old. I’ve been keeping up with your website and video tutorials ever since he transitioned from formula to food and I must say thank you so much for sharing such important knowledge. Unfortunately, as I’m getting ready to live on my own, I’ve decided that it’s best to find a better home for him as I fear he’ll be very lonely and neglected once I’m on my own. Knowing how intelligent these parrots are, I’m very paranoid to have him end up with a bad owner who especially doesn’t know how to prepare him the right types of foods. So I’m really struggling to figure out who to give him to. I was wondering if you possibly would be interested in taking him in or perhaps know of the right person or place. I don’t want him to end up with a breeder that’ll sell him to someone who lacks the knowledge to care for him. Thanks again for your hard work.

    @briarrose7016 Год назад

    So I feed all of these healthy things to my ekkie and only use pecans for trick training. Why does he still get dark feathers? They don't grow in that way, they become dark later. He is very active (free flies around the house), eats healthy and I take him outside in the sun several days a week, even in winter. I took him to 3 dfferent avian vets who didn't have a clue, but weren't willing to do blood tests on him because they said he seemed perfectly healthy. He's only 4 but he has had this problem since he was around 6 months old. Not sure what it could be.

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus Год назад

      Great question: Dark feathers have a couple causes, it always starts with improper diet. Feather weakness (which is usally the case) is caused by imbalance of nutrients. The feather grows out green, but it weakens over time and turns dark (under a microscope, it is actually near translucent like a dying leaf). The diet cant be just a mixture of 'all sorts of healthy things' it is actually pretty specific and by looking closely at the feather you can often determine the missing or overage of certain nutrients. There are hundreds of articles on the patreon site that discuss diet (as well as training, anatomy, etc). You can visit it directly www.patreon.com/eleganteclectus

    • @briarrose7016
      @briarrose7016 Год назад

      @@ElegantEclectus Yes it seems like his feathers weaken over time (you can rub them off and they become brittle as well as dark). He gets carrots, snap peas, celery, capsicum (different colors of bell peppers), cucumber, blueberries (4-5) or raspberries (2-3), corn (about 10 kernels), bok choy zucchini and/or squash, 1 or 2 chickpeas a week, and the pecans for trick training, but I am going to switch to rice after seeing your video on that. Could it be from the pecans? I train him every other day with them and he usually gets a tablespoon by the end of training (he has a big routine of fetch, roll over, high five, wave, step up, basketball, putting items in a grocery cart, etc lol). Maybe I underestimated the pecans?

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus Год назад

      @@briarrose7016 A quick look at your diet and I can see it is missing numerous vitamins and minerals required for feather production. Adding the rice will only exasperate the issue as it is a neutral food which they will consume (forgoing to mush mix). Furthermore it is slowly digested which will increase regurgitation. The pecans are not the main issue, it is the main diet and likely some organ functions because of the ekkie unique crop function. I provide individual assistance to people who join the patreon site as most issues are far more deep rooted than 'just add this'.

      I would consider the time you are defrosting it- I have never heard of it being ‘mushy’. Usually Ekkies enjoy a softer food, however may not like eating a balanced diet…so they may just be acting out and being picky eaters (they are professionals at that).

      The list is too numerous to list in comments, but what is important to not to have overages in nutrients (example: overage of vitamin c…. Most people think that citrus foods are not an option, which can’t be further from the truth - consider broccoli has more vitamin c than an orange). It is important to focus on the ratio of nutrients and ensure you don’t have anti nutrients. On the patreon website, there are hundreds of videos and articles. How is the noise level of a male ekkie? Also will there be a difference if I handfeed the ekkie myself vs getting them fully weaned? I have no experience hand feeding, but the breeder said it will help with our bonding and that he will give me a care guide. But I'm super hesitant and I don't think he should release a young bird to someone who doesn't know how to handfeed! Love love your vids will support your patreon!

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus Год назад

      Are you comparing the noise level to male versus female? or to other species of parrots? Male Eclectus are going to be louder than females- it is in their nature to communicate often with the rest of the flock, while females spend most of the year in the nest. The amount of vocalization depends on the home environment and the mental and physical health of the bird so it can drastically vary... If comparing to other medium sized big bodied birds (amazons or afircan greys) I have found them to be comparable, maybe slightly more quiet- but again there are so many variables. I have both hand fed, and received weaned birds. When breeders make statements like that, it is most often than not because they dont want to go through the long, expensive and somewhat dangerous process of weaning. Weaning Eclectus is emotionally taxing in many cases as you need to closely monitor the weight- and with your attachment level (and their personalities) they will play you like a fiddle! There is no proper commercial hand rearing formula for ekkies, so it is important that they are weaned as soon as possible which can be difficult with that level of attachment. However many fear they will be weaned onto pellets (which are not appropriate for ekkies- especially the young ones). I would say that a higher rate of clients who finished the hand feeding and rearing have had behavioural implications (like screaming, fussy eaters, and unhealthy attachments to where they develop self mutilation from separation issues). Ekkies will by nature bond to their owner very quickly if they are given the proper care- especially males. So the idea that it will 'strengthen your bond' especially for Ekkies seems to be like a way of getting money quicker... however on the other hand, (if you are willing to not go to work), you can control what items they are weaned on- if you are willing to potentially create some behavioural issues that need to be addressed early on.

    Hi im confused. Do you have to steam the veggies before cutting? No need to put them all in a food processor? Were your veggies raw or cooked when you chopped? Saw some videos of people putting them in food processors before offering to the birds.

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus Год назад

      Hell, if you cook quite often, you will find out that streaming before chopping is nearly impossible and it would smash instead of slice. Steaming is the process that breaks down the fibers in heavier root vegetables- but the same molecular action is achieved when a vegetable is frozen and then defrosted. So I often skip that step. Some people use a food processor, but I find that means you can not freeze the food on the sheet pan, and freeze in bags individually. Instead your end up with a block of frozen mess that is impossible to portion out and defrost.

    And what about chia seeds?

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus Год назад

      That is a great question that is not often spoken about! Chia seeds are notorious for the gel they form when exposed to water. They actually absorb 10 times their weight in water. Ekkies have a unique anatomy, in which they need soluble fiber and high water content to digest properly. When chia seeds are ingested dry- they can actually create a crop dysfunction and make your Eclectus very sick (both short term and long term). When chia seeds are ingested wet, the fiber alone is the type we need to be very cautious about- as they are difficult to digest and cause a hyper-abosrbtion of nutrients. In summary- chia seeds should not be fed to eclectus.

    Just found your channel and adopted a 7 month old male Ekkie last month (I had one over 15 yrs ago and tragically lost him when he accidentally flew away). Is buckwheat groats, wheat berries and lentils (soaked and cooked) healthy for them?? I thought I had an idea about healthy diet (I did a lot of research in the early 2000’s) but apparently I still have a lot to learn!!

    • @ElegantEclectus
      @ElegantEclectus Год назад

      Hello, Buckwheat, Groats, and wheat berries should be kept to a minimum as they type of fiber they contain can significantly slow digestion and lead to health complications. Lentils can also be added to the diet, but in strict moderation as they are a anti-nutrient (they slow the absorption of other nutrients), contain digestive irritating compounds, and are a incomplete protein. Because of their palatablility, you will find that they will eat lentils and forgo other more balanced food choices- leaving the diet with missing elements.

    So would you take a range of singular items from your eclectuses diet that would be considered healthy in larger amounts? (Ie low fat content and tiny portions because I don’t want to over feed but I plan to train daily at least an hour) and use it for training in place of where you would offer it in their regular feed plate? Perhaps if I offer it to him in a mixed handful and see what he chooses first a few times till you find his favourite then use that as the training reward? Maybe I will eliminate that from the selection once I know it’s his favourite and make him choose 2 more things via the process of elimination so I know what I can use to mix it up and keep him growing bored of that treat… then remove that from what I would feed him per day without training? or am I overthinking this?

'Offering' is not something I like the idea of- by dictionary spelling of the term (otherwise they will always choose the favorite). - sorry, pressed 'enter' too fast. You will find that training 1 hr a day, is very difficult with this species. Keeping their attention, while dealing with hormones can pose a challenge. Best to get some freeze dried fruit and veggies- when they have completed a task- reward them not 'choose' from an 'offering'. Does that make sense? treats should be such a small portion of the total diet in Ekkies compared to other species.

      The other issue- if not using something neutral like cooked/cooled rice- you can prevent the uptake of more important items, and limit their appetite for a balanced diet.

    I prefer science backed stuff i question the entire system must have facts evidence along with good old common sense. I just ordered a Ninja air fryer, on e bay it’s good as new, the handle was broken but fixed so it was listed as refurbished but i was determined with the little money i had that was going to make it happen, it’s pretty cool it looks more like a toaster oven style but it’s a ninja air fryer, I also ordered the plant based take out containers and am gathering stuff to make my babies fun foraging toys i got the chop sticks just need nice flours and the red pasta, I go over and above to make sure my birds and yorkies have the best life with natural sunlight and full spectrum lighting lots of one on one training sessions cuddle time now i’m baking the burst bread! thx again so glad so I found u
