John Dee - The Monas Hieroglyphica - Part I - History and Context

  • This is part one of a series discussing Dr. John Dee's revolutionary, though obscure, 1564 text the Monas Hieroglyphica (The Hieroglyphic Monad). In part one we will discuss the philosophical and historical context of the text and present the main thesis of our analysis: Dee is seeking to reform human knowledge through using a powerful symbol to purify specifically alchemy and cabala. Part two will explore Dee's theory of alchemy and cabala and part three will show how the Hieroglyphic Monad has its power through combining the semiotic (representational) and the ontological (being itself).
These episodes represent a more introductory version of my thesis on the Monas Hieroglyphica prepared at the University of Amsterdam.
You can read the entire thesis here: drive.google.c...
Standard text and translation of the Monas Hieroglyphica - C. H. Josten, Ambix, 12:2-3 (1964): 82-221
I'll provide more recommended readings on the Monas Hieroglyphica in the third episode.

You sir have a way of demystifying the mystics that honestly is an art form as much as scholastic excellence, one based on empirical evidence and a command of the complex and varied reference library that is in this day and age is not just rare but a real treasure. I leave you with the hope you know His name and call upon it, Be Blessed.

I have a background in philosophy, comparative religion, and the occult. This was still incredibly dense with information. Much of which was way over my head. You must really want your viewers to rewatch your videos multiple times, because that's what I'm obliged to do. However, I do it with admiration. Kudos.

Yeah, this is a pretty advanced video. I try to load the videos with lots (both audio and in the text comments) of info for rewatch value and so that folks can get more information if they choose. I think for most videos this will be about as 'deep' as they get for now. Though, if the channel is successful I want to also do some more content that is more 'graduate' level stuff. I am totally open to feedback if the content is either simplifies things too much or goes over folks' heads - I want the channel to be both approachable and challenging and striking that balance is something I'll have learn how to do along the way.

Now I'm falling asleep to your videos. They are thankfully a stable and mellow volume level. Also, often enough, they are interesting enough to hold my interest if I can't sleep.
There are other channels that could hold this space for me, but they have thumping bass at the beginning and end of their vids, so they disqualify themselves. I'm glad I found your channel.

Many laypeople myself included didn't make it to university, either because we just didn't have the requisites in grades || mathematics or because, as with myself, I went into the private industry early because I "knew what I wanted to do with my life". Anyway, you regularly give us a peek into scholarly research that we don't always have access to(most published papers are pay per view or subscription based. Sometimes even requiring credentials.) I would also say that you allow the public and myself access to an educated and well read personage such as yourself(in the form of your opinions and information), an event that does not always readily present itself in my social circles(see: dumbass drinking buddies)which I imagine is true for most laypeople. For this and the material on the channel itself AWA just your disposition and uplifting ethos, I thank you sincerely and applaud your efforts. In other words: Thnx for the vids bro!

My reason for my interest in John Dee is because he is a character in the new book of the Flemish writer Jeroen Olyslaegers 'Wildevrouw, or Wild Woman in English (yet to be translated). It actually is quite a best seller in Flanders, Belgium. It concerns the period when the city of Antwerp was at its hight, before being destroyed by the Spanjards. People such as Dee, Bruegel and Plantyn are all present but the main character is a bar holder who at one point harbors Dee in his lodge. In the course of the book the main character is intirgued by the works of Dee and hopes to contacts angels. Definatly a book you have to read when you are interested in the life of John Dee.

In fact it's 'pure truths' of the monad's constituent parts and gist of their related philosophy is a kind of ongoing oral tradition among astrologers although few realize it's connection to Dee and the alchemists.

Given that Dr. Dee certainly read and I think even mentions "Steganographia" by Johannes Trithemius and
his obsession and practical successes with cryptography, what's the likelihood that "Monas Hieroglyphica" is an elaborate cryptographic system or in itself a text produced by such system, so that true meaning can be recovered only after decoding?
It always struck me how some remarks in the text of "Monas Hyeroglyphica" seem out of place of main context (as long as I can follow one). Almost if some entry points for a cypher.

While Dee did not have the modern theory of Semiotics, he wasn’t far wrong. Eduardo Kohn the author of “How Forests Think” notes about semiosis and life: “Life, then, is a sign process. Any dynamic in which ‘something…stands to somebody, for something in some respect or capacity,’ as Peirce’s (CP 2.228) definition of a sign has it, would be alive.” [p.74] Being is to be alive, and life is a semiotic process, or more properly all semiotic processes are alive. At least in the view of a modern Anthropologist having to deal with the “Masters of the forest.” Considering that we can view particle interactions as a semiotic process, maybe we should consider the universe itself as being or as a collection of beings.
