I Love your comedic nature. Some of the best advice I ever received was from my Grandmother. "If you can read you can cook". Instructions are important .
The "compulsion of God" bit is how I usually explain what qualifies as "forbidden" magic to my fellow Christians. Lighting a bunch of candles and incense on an altar, waving around all kinds of paraphernalia, casting away evil spirits and inviting the angels and saints to accompany you, repeating divine names and orations over and over, taking into consideration the placement of the stars in the sky and the cycles of the moon for scheduling the whole ordeal, but ultimately acknowledging "not my will but Yours be done"...? That's just prayer with extra steps. Leaving a house of worship thinking God owes anyone squat for singing a couple of hymns, tossing their change in the collection plate, and pretending to pay attention to a sermon? Diabolic sorcery, even if accepted by polite society. I wonder why it's my fellow protestants (especially the Sola Fidae crowd) who are most likely to get angry at me with that definition. /s
In all seriousness, this argument - even from the point of view of secular religious studies - does hammer home the gulf that can often exist between the letter (and indeed spirit!) of an official prohibition and the cultural taboos that actually become associated with it in practice.
@Andrew The TL;DR of my response is 'I agree even though I have some quibbles about your reasoning.' That is why I didn't specify astrology. The date for Easter is calculated using the phases of the moon (to mimic the Hebrew lunar calendar). Our current calendar was originally based on the sun's placement in relation to the stars. Revelation 12 invites astronomical readings. Also, while I agree that trusting in the Lord leaves one little reason to bother with divination (especially if one also trusts in science), the Hebrew in Deut 18:10 is not a blanket ban but a specific ban fitting the other prohibitions' pattern against professions rather than acts ("don't be a sorcerer [literally lot-caster]" instead of "never cast lots"). This explains why there's multiple prohibitions, why nobody cares when lots are cast, why Joseph scryed in Egypt (Gen 44:5), and why there would be enough Hebrews studied in astrology to point to any political-historical readings God decided to exploit. It also resolves the problem that many forms of divination are mechanically identical (though motivationally distinct) from mundane acts of data gathering or generation (e.g. noticing odd spots in slaughtered animals, rolling dice, etc). This is in no way meant to endorse any form of divination but rather nuance to excuse historical minds otherwise as logical as ours working with prescientific datasets under extremely different living conditions.

Dr. Sledge! Love your videos and how you present topics and coverage of books. This one was my most anticipated video of yours and you delivered well above and beyond. Thank you good sir.
Y'know, I wouldn't be surprised if this "worked". Since it tells you to keep attending your classes and studying the topics anyway, and all the prayer and concentration and meditation and whatnot is going to focus you on learning, which is your goal. So it probably would enhance your knowledge acquisition, if even just by the placebo effect, but also just by focusing you.

The Grimoire is clearly a mechanism to illuminate and enlighten the student -operator into the Literary Artes, Incantories and other grimoires, built as a stepping stone to the other works of Solomon. All the works therein the student is compelled to seek knowledge, aid in their literacy, poetry and mode of speech, making one more eloquent in speech, but also to decipher the riddles within the books of magic and understand the deeper knowledge of God. Many of these Notae share a level of similitude with the Veve used in Haitian Vodou that, I think, is rather interesting, and perhaps indicative of influence somewhere early in the formation of the Vodou cultus. Perhaps the same sources that introduced Freemasonry.

Yes, it is titled _Ars Notoria: The Notory Art of Solomon: A Medieval Treatise on Angelic Magic & the Art of Memory_. Translated by Matthias Castle and published by Inner Traditions in 2023.
1:23 I was convinced this was the start of a segway leading into a sponsorship segment. Turns out that it wasn't, but the similarities in the presentation leads me to believe that Ars Notoria and similar compilations are very much the medieval versions of today's efficient knowledge apps, such as Blinkist, Skillshare, or Brilliant. I wonder if some of the public figures of the time were also paid to spread these works to their particular audiences.

Many of these Notae share a level of similitude with the Veve used in Haitian Vodou that, I think, is rather interesting, and perhaps indicative of influence somewhere early in the formation of the Vodou cultus. Perhaps the same sources that introduced Freemasonry.
These are such wonderful videos, definitely spreading knowledge and interest in the liberal arts. I wonder if you’ve ever had any experiences that you consider to be occult, or beyond explanation, or with the supernatural? Or do you essentially come to this work as a scholar, historian and skeptic?
The latter
So... the first Cliff Notes? Ha ha! I was fascinated, since my own psychology research was in mnemonics and improving memory. I have seen odd illustrations which I believe to be early memory aids but whose keys we have lost.
delightful!
Glad you enjoyed it - especially coming from such a grimiore connoisseur!
The tactics mentioned in the Ars Notoria seem similar to that of the Shiva Samhita, which is likely a much older yogic text.
Oooh... That would make a great video! I would love to see him compare books from different regions.
This is a truly fascinating and entertaining playlist; I'm really enjoying it - thanks for making & sharing it with us, no matter our backgrounds or beliefs! ❤️❤️
Just loved this video,. I've received questions about Egyptian and Babylonian ancient math. Maybe something for you or your colleges? I can only draw and try to explain simply. Thank You for the Content! Maggie
What is the copper kettle thing in the background on the shelf???
has the new version you referenced at 27:01 been released yet?
Yes, it is titled _Ars Notoria: The Notory Art of Solomon: A Medieval Treatise on Angelic Magic & the Art of Memory_. Translated by Matthias Castle and published by Inner Traditions in 2023.
Any leads to get some of that magical papyrus beer?
You know ancient Egyptians drank their beer with straws?
Nuh uh
Very long straws!

You upload this _after_ my last college class :l
A coincidence, perhaps?
Good to know universities haven’t changed much.
Thanks
1:23 I was convinced this was the start of a segway leading into a sponsorship segment. Turns out that it wasn't, but the similarities in the presentation leads me to believe that Ars Notoria and similar compilations are very much the medieval versions of today's efficient knowledge apps, such as Blinkist, Skillshare, or Brilliant.
I wonder if some of the public figures of the time were also paid to spread these works to their particular audiences.
No mention of Dr skinners recent edition? He perfected the manuscript and method; he just released version B.
I'm guessing you did watch the whole video.
@@TheEsotericaChannel Bahaha, I left for the last 2 minutes, literally. :) Well done my friend; I tip my hat too you. Really enjoying the recent subjects (: I personally have and am in the process of applying his current versions; amazing scholarship from the both of you!!
Weighing in one hand the value of the promise; weighing in the other a strong sense that a fuckup will lead to a Very Bad Time
I will do this ritual and not rtfm.
Just go the speed run Ars Nova version ;)
*Hopped up on meth, up for days, doing the ritual by the seat of my pants*
"hello, God? yeah I need it all. Yeah all of it. All of it. Please? What do you mean I am in big trouble? I need the thing!!!"
@@ktkatte6791 Wow, meth and the Ars Notoria....sounds like a True Detective episode!
Do you have any plans to do a video about ars notariae?
You mean this one?
@@TheEsotericaChannel No, about the profession of notary public in Flanders and Italy in the middle ages.
@@peterjeffers2284 is that esoterica related somehow?
Can you review Stephen Skinner? I have some of copies of his books like Veritable Key of Solomon and the Sepher Raziel, I just wanna know how valuable his text is
Bravo.
Spiritus Sancti Triumvirae; God Bless.
5:00 even in ancient times, some students try anything to cram for the exam without working.
The Konami Code, but for knowledge! very cool.
Could this just be a process to self induce hallucinations? Fasting, restating prayers, being alone for months, almost like hypnotism (And if so it doesn’t mean it’s not real knowledge you gain from it,or the experience isn’t real)
Great work! I am thoroughly enjoying your channel Dr. Sledge. Quick question as to a word you use in this video. It sounds like hymnology? or himology/hemology?? I tried looking for it and couldn't find it and thus couldn't find its definition. Please help. Thanks!
This conversation bring freemasonry to mind in a few ways …
So this is what notaries do?
Have you checked the Matthias Castle version of Ars Notoria yet? If yes how does it compared to Dr Skinner's version?
I know it ain't directly related to your video (and that you're no fan of the advertizer), but these Gaia TV or whatever ads are pretty amusing. "Let me tell you about the Immortal Kings of Sumeria, who lived for 3000 years". Like my brother in Christ if they lived 3000 years they ain't immortal lol
Yeah, those ads are cringe
