Hi Jalen, from what I’ve been told recently approximately 1/3 of UCT grads will go the 17S route, so it is harder, but if you’re focused on it you should be able to snag a spot. Also, this career field has changed nonstop-I’d say there’s nothing permanent with one’s shred-designation, it’s constantly changing, just do your best in whatever you’re selected for 😉

Hello as a 24 year old about to get my comptia sec + would you suggest the enlisted or officer route ? I have no JROTC experience however I am working on my cyber degree I have a little over a year and a half left and I’m really trying to make a decision before my 25th birthday, I could do ANG or reserves and work for a higher paying cyber role in the civilian side too but I’m a bit overwhelmed with where I should start. Thanks in advance ❤
Hey, what are the chances to get into one of 17 series or 1B today i believe it is. I have associate degree in CiS and couple years of experience in IT, cant find any info about associates degree besides ill enlist as an E3
do you work with anyone in the same field in reserves? im looking to join soon if I can end up getting in. if so I want this position in reserves, wondered if you notice much difference in the day to day for reserve members. other than only working 1 weekend a month.
nice to hear about what af cyber officer could do on a average day. I been well on the air force enlisted side in the cyber field at least everyone doesnt like comptia security+ but its a requirement to work in DOD I like to commission but the AFOQT is pulling me back may stay on enlisted side or see what navy/army has offer.
Hey! I just found your channel through this video, and I'm glad because it kind of gave me a better idea of what military cyber jobs are about. I'm looking to get a civilian-military job (looking at Navy right now) for information security. Is there anything you would recommend for someone trying to get into civilian-military cyber security jobs? I'll have my associates very soon, and I was looking at getting the CompTIA Security certification you had mentioned
Hey my twin and I are prior service and recently graduated! I was researching how to become a cyber security officer and which branch we should switch too and you’re video was recommended. Do you know how the Direct Commission Program work for 17s? Or can I only get accepted through regular commission? Have my BA in CS, training and exp in cyber and software engineering, 2 yr exp as a software engineer.
Hi! Congrats on graduating to both of you! Huge accomplishment. To answer your question..Direct commission has been for high achieving enlisted airmen (currently active) who have a tech degree. Since you have some awesome experience I’d check out the 1B4 Reddit Forum which is managed by the cyber enlisted career field managers who identify high performing airmen to recommend for 17X direct commission. I’d read through everything there and contact them and ask questions. They are typically good about giving information and even hold live webinars too. Good luck! We need smart and experienced officers. 🇺🇸
Yes, there are complimentary cyber and communications enlisted AFSC’s; however, the job and focus will be different while the mission remains the same. More technical focus but less overall responsibility and also less pay.
I'm here for the cyber officer component. What degree does the career field favor? I'm working on my MBA with a specialization in Analytics. What do you suggest?
Hi! That’s amazing you’re already doing your master’s, sounds like you’re ahead of the game. The cyber career field favors selecting officers with a Bachelor’s in a STEM concentration. And if not in a stem field, then someone who has completed at least 24 credit hours in stem courses.😄
Hi there! I had a quick question -- I'm in the midst of my research journey for applying for the reserves and I was wondering: Have you encountered reserve officers in cyber? I'm having trouble finding material for the 2 jobs that looked really interesting (Cyberspace Operations Officer & Cyberspace Effects Operations Officer) and can't identify if it's an Active-Duty-only role or if I'd be able go for it as a reservist? I'm a non-prior with a bachelors in Comp. Sci and a masters in Data Analytics -- dunno if qualifications change the answer. 😅
Hi there, thanks for asking-short answer is yes. I’ve met and worked with reserve cyber officers. But NONE of the ones I’ve met started off reserve. All of them were active for at least about 4 years then went reserves. Your best bet may be applying for officer training school, doing UCT, one assignment (3ish years) then switching to Reserve or Guard.
@@kimchiwarriorprincess Wow that was fast! Thanks so much! Glad to have a better idea of what the path might look like before I see a recruiter. It helps a ton. Thanks a bunch Major!
Hello, Im not sure if you still monitor these as its an old video but had a few questions about the cyber officer route. Im prior service Marine Corps finishing a bachelors in Pyschology.. I understand its not exactly a computer science field but Im currently working in IT and have Sec+ already. Do you think I would be considered for a cyber officer job if I started the process? I have about a 3.7gpa and graduate in October. I was also curious how technical the job is as the Marine Corps officers typically were more hands off and were in management. Do offensive cyber officers just manage offensive enlisted or are they technical as well? Thanks in advance.
Hi Joseph, thank u for watching and commenting. I do still read and reply to every comment. Please send me an email with ur comment and I can reply to you more thoroughly there. Thanks! Kimchiwarriorprincess@gmail.com
Young people should know that the AF is now saying that a bachelor's degree in computer science with certifications and IT experience doesn't qualify you for direct commission into their cyber program. You now need a masters or PhD to even be considered. It all sounds ridiculous and nefarious. After high school, pursue anything medical or skill trades instead of the military.
Thank You for your video. Was helpful to me. I am currently first year of the computer science student taking cyber security course. If I have two years associate degree of CS, can I join to the USAF to get the cyber security job?
Hi congrats! Glad my video was helpful. There’s a lot of requirements I’ve included in my video and it depends if you plan to go Officer or enlisted. Double check those requirements. Also keep in mind that specific careers are not guaranteed, especially as an officer. 🇺🇸
I contacted the Airforce for this position, but they turned me down, said I wasn’t qualified. I have a BA in Japanese and Business, and that’s probably why, but how’d you get in with a PolSci degree?
I really enjoyed this Video, even though I was a level of PS5 Step O after 30 years, totally unrelated to your experience detailed here, makes me wish that I went this route instead! Thank you so much for this #kimchiwarriorprincess!! (....you hacked your family.....?)
@@kimchiwarriorprincess Are some jobs more competitive than others? I heard rated is easier to get into than non-rated. Thanks for amazingly quick reply btw lol!
Amazing video! Thanks! Plz help, I have a B.S. in Business Administration and thinking of Joining Air Force in Cyber jobs and have no background whatsoever can I still make this possible? You are so accomplished. I wish I can be somewhat like you. Thanks!!!
It takes a decent amount of preparation. Coming from zero knowledge of networks and IT management, it took 3 weeks of a network basics course plus 2 weeks of sec + class, plus my own preparation (practice tests) day and night during those 2 weeks. I ended up scoring well. If you already have certification then you have it, no one can force you to take a test you’ve already passed. You would just skip that portion of training. 🤓
@@kimchiwarriorprincess thank you for the information, I plan on looking into the Air Force reserves to gain valuable experience and also other benefits that I feel could be important to me. Can you give me some advice on my option to join the military? I will be done with my masters degree in cybersecurity in June 2021 and will be taking the security plus exam in January. How much experience do you think I will get by joining the reserves and trying to get a job such as Cyber surety or cyber systems operations? Please share any advice or information you can, thanks again.
Wow, it sounds like you’re doing very well! That’s great you’re looking at joining. I personally don’t know of any OTS grads that go straight to reserves for the 17X career field, I’d say it’s the vast majority who join active and do 4 years then switch to reserves. It would be best to check with an OTS recruiter. As far as experience goes, it depends where you end up and who you’re working with and for-every assignment I’ve had has taught me a ton.
Is age a factor? I have a Bachelors in Computer science. Currently in DEP and hoping to get Cyber Transport Systems as enlisted. I’ve tried inquiring about being an officer but they always tell me it’s either full or if you haven’t taken your AFQTC test you have to wait till the next round. In my area there were no physical locations to take it at the time. I’m still conflicted on whether I should try going for Officer, but I heard you learn more hard skill as enlisted in cyber related fields.
That’s great! Yes they are very different, I go into detail about both at the 2:15 mark of this video. They’re both great programs and places to be, each with their own pros and cons, but ultimately with the same goal in mind. Good luck! 🇺🇸
Do Air Force pilots get deployed into battle like how Marines are and don't get to see their family for a while like if Marines are going to war they're going to need air support and if there's no air support standing by then it's gonna take a while for that air support to reach your area.
Graduating next year with a degree in MIS. I’m looking to go into cyber security and I’m heavily considering the military as an option. Is the pay range about the same or is it lower than the civilian sector.
If you have specific certifications and expertise, you could make more in civilian sector. If you’re just beginning, likely being an officer will set you up better financially. Enlisted generally have a low pay scale and it takes a long time to get paid in the high 5 figures unfortunately.
Hi my son is Japanese American and very much wants to work in Computers..Is there a job in the Air force In Computers that can get him into Japan or Korea,We keep see most Computer Jobs are in America..My son is going in High school for 2 years of Computer Science Vocational and plans to take a course C++ before Graduating High school any help would be Appreciated...
Undergrad: BA - Political Science/International Relations. MBA - Business. I would check with someone who is currently an Air Force recruiter about the color blindness, as far as I know it’s a disqualification for flying jobs.

@@kimchiwarriorprincess Hello. My daughter is Kaili Rowe, I made her an account for her soccer videos. But I emailed you on my military email. My name is Joshua Kanui-Rowe
I think it depends on the career field and expertise of the individual…hard to say for each circumstance but they do have many cool opportunities too 😎
I plan on going into the Air Force and I want to make it a 20 year career but I have no idea what would be a good job.. I’m sure there’s plenty of them but I’m just kinda scared 😂. Thank you for this vid!
I’m not completely sure what you mean here, but if you’re asking what are the requirements for commissioning as a cyber officer there are quite a few but one thing you do need is a bachelors degree. In order to enlist you’ll need your high school diploma. While certifications are highly sought after and amazing skills to have they are not required to enlist or commission as an officer. Some of the cyber tech schools will include certain certifications as a part of training after entering. 🤗
I have heard that the USAFA looks very closely at class rank. I have a GPA of 3.89 but am only in the top 35% of my class. Will that hinder my chances of being accepted when I apply? I am hoping to go through USAFA to become a cyber officer
Hi Bradley, all factors are taken into consideration. In short, yes-if over a third of your class is at such a high GPA, it’ll mean to admissions one of two things-either your school inflates grades or you are in a very smart group of students. Hard to differentiate on paper alone. The best way to make yourself stand out is to score high on the SAT/ACT and position yourself well with strong extracurriculars (Varsity sports) and leadership experience (President, VP, etc of prestigious clubs), do well on fitness test, nail your interview, and get your nomination. No pressure! 🤪 but seriously, it’s do-able, just take it one step at a time.. 🙌
@@kimchiwarriorprincess would 2500 community service hours make me stand out? I have other things in mind as well but that’s most likely the thing the Academy would care most about
@@bradleywalton970 wow that’s an impressive amount of community service! While community service alone is notable and a good thing, what they want to see is leadership-what did you accomplish during those 2500 hours? Did you lead people to do a thing? What was the result of such thing? Who did you help and how did you improve their lives? If you word it that way you’re going to have a much higher shot than saying “I did community service”. That in addition to a 1300+ minimum math/verbal SAT/31 ACT score and physical fitness/varsity sports will help you. 🙌
Hi this video really helped. I want to be a cyber officer and i have been trying to find videos and this really did help me with my decision. I do have a question for you. So I am going to graduate high school with my associates degree. I am wondering if it would be better to do ROTC or go in as an enlisted and get my bachelors and then go as an officer. I know this question is more opinion based, but I'm trying to find the best way for me to become an air force officer.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I would always recommend going straight officer route; call your local university detachment, visit academyadmissions.com and research your options. I don’t recommend going enlisted when your end goal is to become officer (unless you have to due to $ or grades or other reasons)...why make a left turn in hopes your path will go right, when you can make a right turn to begin with? 😉
@@kimchiwarriorprincess lol i keep coming up with questions sorry. As a cyber officer are u able to be chosen for 17s? Another question is do u do any coding, hacking or anything like that as an officer. Or is it just over seeing other do it. My final question is does rotc teach you everything u will need to know to be a leader, or is most of it hands on experience?
These are all great questions! I’ll do my best to answer briefly: 1. Yes you can be chosen for 17S. (About 1/3 of all Cyber/Communications officers are 17S series, the other 2/3 are 17D like myself) 2. It depends where you are, and your rank. 17S is usually more hands on with the fun techy stuff. Also from Captain and higher is more leadership role, less hands on. Again, this is generalization, it depends where you are. 3. ROTC/USAFA/OTS only teaches you basic principles needed to commission. The rest comes from trial and error, professional development, self-sought education, relationship building, and for myself, prayer, lots of it! 😆
Also, by professional development, I mean a few things: -official schooling the Air Force will require of you as an officer -recommended books/reading -formal and informal mentorship from the leaders around you
Hi Johari, thank you for watching! Most officer assignments are 2-3 years. Lately they’ve been making them 4 years, except for the first assignment, they are keeping that at 3 years max so someone will get to experience at least 2 assignments before their initial commitment time is finished. 🤗
Travel depends a lot on where you are working and the mission. Some people hardly travel, some do even up to 50% of the time. Regardless everyone ends up traveling from where they live to the next assignment and that usually includes driving through multiple states each time.
It really depends on what’s needed at the time, I wish I had insight on all the numbers but I don’t right now. I would think they need someone like you.
Do you know anything about the current cyber direct commission program? I will have my Masters in around a year, and I have multiple industry certs. I am currently the spouse of an active duty enlisted Airman. I am considering trying to commission through the direct commission path. Do officers brought in through the direct commission program still go to keesler for tech school after OTS?
My son's recruiter finally responded after a month of the initial contact. He told my son that a bachelor's degree and his current certs and two years of work experience in a Help Desk job does not qualify him for the direct commission program. You should reach out to your state's AF recruiter asap for advice.
@@AnnMitt Supposedly my bachelors as well as my 5 years of SysAdmin experience and my certifications DO qualify me to apply. The review board would decide if I got accepted or not, and at what rank. I have my degree in cybersecurity. I have my A+, Net+, Sec+, CySA+, Pentest+, CASP+, SSCP, LPI Linux Essentials, and ITILv4 Foundation certifications now; and will also have my CISSP within a month. I also start my Masters in cybersecurity in August. But I am not able to join due to health issues.
@CyberSolutionsWithJared With a masters and all those certs, why join the military? Seems like you should be in high demand in corporate America (i.e. Microsoft, Amazon, Costco...). And my son was told by an AF recruiter that a BS degree in CS will not qualify him for Direct Commission. He needs a master's degree to even be considered.

Is there an age limit to submit a officer packet if you’re enlisted?
Hi Ragin, I’d recommend going to usajobs to look at the job requirements, prerequisites, and go off of that.
@@kimchiwarriorprincess oh dang enlisted airmen? Oh nah we were enlisted Army 😂😂😂😂😂 I mean I’ll ask on the forum you could never know
In the air guard you could of made Lt colonel in 8 years, easily.
🤯
Do you think there is a way to get this job through enlistment?
Yes, there are complimentary cyber and communications enlisted AFSC’s; however, the job and focus will be different while the mission remains the same. More technical focus but less overall responsibility and also less pay.
Thanks this is a career field I really want to get into
I'm here for the cyber officer component.
@@kimchiwarriorprincess Sounds good! Thank you, ma'am!

Hi looking to join at 36 & wondering if you could give some advice on what jobs to keep off the dream list due to automation..

Is it true that in the Air force it's more difficult than army cyber security?
Yes

Thank you Travis, I would check out OTS options if I were you. 😊
How hard was the comptia security plus? And if I get the security plus prior to going to the military will they try to make me take it again?

I’m trying to get into University of Tennessee but want to get into AFROTC for cyber security. Is it all that different from the Air Force Academy?
That’s great! Yes they are very different, I go into detail about both at the 2:15 mark of this video. They’re both great programs and places to be, each with their own pros and cons, but ultimately with the same goal in mind. Good luck! 🇺🇸
Is there Direct Commission for cyber with engineering background?
There was a couple years ago, I would check with a recruiter if there still is. Best wishes 🤩

Hi Tony, I did undergrad in political science. But most people now do a STEM major for their bachelors to get Cyber.

Wait high school requirement what if you dont have this but your a cyber security student and a ethical hacker
@@kimchiwarriorprincess that a lot
I’ll do my best to answer briefly:
1. Yes you can be chosen for 17S. (About 1/3 of all Cyber/Communications officers are 17S series, the other 2/3 are 17D like myself)
Also, by professional development, I mean a few things:
-official schooling the Air Force will require of you as an officer
-recommended books/reading
-formal and informal mentorship from the leaders around you
I like your hair!
Thank you!

How often did you travel or get reassigned to different base?
Hi Johari, thank you for watching! Most officer assignments are 2-3 years. Lately they’ve been making them 4 years, except for the first assignment, they are keeping that at 3 years max so someone will get to experience at least 2 assignments before their initial commitment time is finished. 🤗
Travel depends a lot on where you are working and the mission. Some people hardly travel, some do even up to 50% of the time. Regardless everyone ends up traveling from where they live to the next assignment and that usually includes driving through multiple states each time.
If I have a computer science degree what do you think the chances are that I don’t get cyber??? Going through ots
@CyberSolutionsWithJared
With a masters and all those certs, why join the military? Seems like you should be in high demand in corporate America (i.e. Microsoft, Amazon, Costco...). And my son was told by an AF recruiter that a BS degree in CS will not qualify him for Direct Commission. He needs a master's degree to even be considered.
