On reflection, I enjoyed being a capt. more than being a maj. Though I've encountered more captains who needed guidance and correction in performing their duties properly than majors who shirked responsibility. It's true that you are always being observed; notes are taken. It isn't a punitive thing. Everyone wants you to succeed...to be the best you can be. Work hard, study, learn...learn. Help others and they will pass it on. The best officers all have one quality in common and that's personal integrity. The military can offer you a great experience but it all depends on you because OTHERS have to depend on you, too. There's that integrity again.
My son joined the Air Force 2 years ago, he has less-than a year left to finish his bachelors degree. He wants to become an Air Force officer. I was in the army for 20+ years, I retired 14 years ago. I give him as much advice as I can but your channel helps with many things on the officer side of the house that I didn’t know about . Excellent channel.

Good evening, I have currently submitted an OCS package for the Navy awaiting on the board to convene. Right now I am an E6 in the Navy active duty for 7 years now. Your videos have helped even though I am with a different branch. I am however an airforce brat

I'm glad you are speaking to new and potential young officers about how vitally important it is to trust and confide in their senior NCOs. Part of a senior NCOs responsibility is to train, guide and protect their junior officers and grow them into senior officers. But if the junior officers don't coordinate with their SNCO's for input, or worse, interfere with the junior enlisted or the smooth operation of the unit, they do so at their own peril. A good SRNCO will always show respect and courtesy to the RANK of the officer appointed over them (even if the officer is a dirtbag); but if the officer shows respect of their SNCOs' knowledge and wisdom, the officer will find his/her job and the trajectory to higher promotion much, much easier.
Have a well rounded application- do a great job so your leadership will support you, have a great GPA in school, do good with the AFOQT, visit your education center for application guidance/deadlines, volunteer in your community/base, demonstrate what you bring as a leader, have solid letters of recommendations, ask those near you to share their experiences with commissioning whether they are prior enlisted or not. Thank you for the video! I like hearing a perspective from an officer point of view. I am currently enlisted as a structural maintainer. I have a little college under my belt, I am contemplating trying to go through the POC-ERP (program) to finish out and commission. I don’t particularly enjoy my job but I respect it, it’s a great skill to have just not something I want to do for the rest of my career. I would love to become a special investigations officer, or get out of the military and go into law enforcement. I have no interest in the enlisted side of law enforcement. I feel as if I could offer a lot as a leader and exchange learn a lot.

I wanted to go into the A.N.G. to get my degree paid but my parents said they would pay for my bachelors degree. Hi Lyndon. Thank for reaching out to me, watching and subscribing. Both the Army and Air Force are good options. The question to consider is which option is better for you. I can speak on the Air Force side and it has been a great journey. My daughter is doing AF ROTC and she is not under contract. Her friend is doing Army ROTC and she is not under contract either. The Air Force is military but may have a corporate feel to it. From what I hear, the Army is more of a military feel. Consider speaking with the Air Force ROTC detachment and ask them some questions. My great uncle from the Vietnam War says that officer is a lot better than private. He was 31 years old at Colonel rank when Saigon fell on April 30, 1975.

I’ve only just got into highschool but I’m definitely planning on joining the airforce. I have no issues maintaining a good grade or anything of the sort, its getting in shape that’ll be the issue lol.

as a CAP Cadet who has been Cadet First Sergeant, Flight Commander, and Operations Officer, I have Found your videos to be the best for any High School Age Cadet who comes in saying " I want to go to USAFA, and be an Air Force Officer". Currently, I put myself in the dilemma of being a part time College student, who let himself get out of shape, for a few weeks now I have looked into Enlisting reserve as a Boom, but I feel like I don't have the time do go away for 8 months of training.
Well you've had some great leadership roles. Now it's time to focus on yourself physically. You can work out and make it a priority and you'll be in good shape shortly. There is nothing wrong with enlisting so you'll have to decide which option is best for you: enlisted or officer. Think if you want to go active duty or reserve/guard. It's easy to go from active duty to reserve/guard but VERY DIFFICULT to go from reserve/guard to active duty. Work out and give yourself about 2 weeks to look at your options and then pursue the option that is best for you. Thank you for the feedback and for watching.
This video is great. I'm in ALS right now and I'm talking to a couple people about OTS, I might try this. I tried the LEAD program last year and got denied but at least Tried. But I think this path is for me. Still have a few years before I try it because I don't even have my CCAF just yet but after that I'm working on my bachelors. Thanks for the video sir.

Speak with a recruiter and let them know what happened, the disposition of the case, how you've succeeded since and the chances of getting a waiver approved.
I'm a Junior in college majoring in Cyber Security. Going to OTS is on my options list because of the experience, career, and certifications, but I'm still very on the fence. Worried about getting a job that I am not interesting in / doesn't relate with Cyber Security. I also have no desire for the money being an officer. I think that I would take a lot of pride of being in the Air Force and military. I also love being a leader and leading teams.
Explore both options of being an officer and coming in enlisted. Both are great options. Serving sometimes means putting yourself second. Do what's best for yourself.
I desperately want to commission. I have been in the Air Force for almost a year now, and I do not regret one minute of it. I signed up for a six year enlistment, however, when I get my 5 level in my career field, I want to finish up my college classes and continue to apply for OTS, and then re-class into OSI. I know they are both competitive, and I have my options open. I have been talking to my SNCO's/ my leadership often about it, and I wanna make my goals clear. I want to do my 20 years. The Air Force has already given me so much when I got deathly sick from my appendix, and they treated me like gold the entire time when I was healing. I really can't say enough good things, but I owe this branch my life!

ROTC is a great way to commission. If you meet the entry requirements from the get go, you can get some type of scholarship as well to pay for school. Visit the ROTC website at www.afrotc.com for more information. Also consider visiting your nearest AFROTC detachment at a university and speaking with them about the program. I enjoyed my time while I did the program. Good luck!
j dog I was prior enlisted Security Forces. I can't speak from the SF officer side of things, but I can say they always seemed a lot happier than us enlisted folks.
Im worried about not getting picked up for ots. I want to be security forces officer but my major is philosophy. Not sure if ill get any job much less what I want.
All you can is try and see what happens. Ensure your application is solid and your personal statement is well written. Hopefully your GPA and AFOQT scores are the best they can be. Good luck!
Philosophy is arguably the greatest major there is. While it’s unfortunately not as respected as it should be, don’t ever apologize for choosing it. Though I would suggest considering taking up a master’s degree in something more specialized to be more career oriented. Law schools tend to love applicants with Philosophy majors too.

The enlisted Job that I think I would Enjoy would be a flight engineer for a rescue squadron- Helicopters. :) Or I could be an officer. If you are like a Doctor, Lawyer, Psychologist, or something like that, are you automatically an officer? How does that process work, if you go in as enlisted and then finish with a degree after? Are you going to go enlisted to officer at that point?
If you come into those career fields, yes you'll be an officer. The commissioning school is about 2-3 weeks (Commission Officer Training). Just because someone has a degree doesn't automatically make them an officer. They have to be selected for a commission and have to complete the commissioning program.
Show the leadership qualities you have and give examples. Inform them on why you want to be an officer and what you bring to the team. Provide examples of challenges you've had and how you overcame them by making adjustments.
I’ve always wanted to study aeronautical engineering as a little boy and fly planes. When I heard of the air force academy it immediately hooked my interest. My question is can you study aeronautical engineering at the academy and fly aircraft as an officer? I’m 17 at the moment so I’m really split on what to do with my life so some help would be nice!

I am currently enlisted and I want to go the rotc route how can I do that? I heard about a program that'll allow me to go to college before my contract ends and complete the program but im not sure what it's called yet. do I need to wait until my contract ends and also does the Air Force pay for my schooling or will I need to sort that out?
I don't know if this is a silly question, but what is the social life generally like for an officer outside of work? Obviously I'm sure it varies from person, but compared to the enlisted airmen is there any sense of camaraderie amongst officers? I feel like I see alot of enlisted enjoying outings and bonding together off-duty, but I don't really hear or see much about what it's like for the officers. I'm just curious to get an idea of what it might be like for a young, single officer.
It's the same for the enlisted side, however, there are fewer officers when compared to the enlisted side. You'll be young officers like even if they're in other units and you'll have fun. Don't worry about that if that's the case. When I commissioned I met new great people.
So your a security officer right? I have a question... as for firearms how does it work? Starting I heard that when your at a duty station after tech school, do you get your pistol/holster do you keep it and leave it your room or do you get it at the counter before your shift then return it? How does it work
My career field is Personnel. The firearms are not kept with the individual. They are kept in an official building (vault) and stay there all of the time while you're off duty.

If you attend ROTC, you'll be a commissioned officer upon completion of the program. You will not attend OTS since both of those programs (ROTC & OTS) lead to a commission.
Most generals are rated officers (backgrounds like pilots, navigators) and space. My career field is Personnel which falls under Support. There are VERY FEW Personnel officers and it is very competitive.
So.... I'm almost 4 yrs now and I'm planning to make a master degree in my next 4 yrs , so if I make my master degree.... in that term "example" in 3 yrs of my second enlistment "can I rank up as a Tsgt? Or I have to take the staff and tech s test anyway?
I’m currently a non US citizen I will be a permeant resident by the begin of next year what are the options for me because I have done some research and found that non citizens are not eligible to be officers . My goal is to join active duty as a medic after I finish my undergrad .I potential want to go to med school in the air force or a private medical school .
Mario- you can either wait until you become a US Citizen or you can enlist and apply to become a US Citizen while you're in. Definitely speak with a recruiter as they know the process to do this.
I'm going for officer. I feel that I have what it takes no doubt. Wrestled my whole life, graduated college last spring, scored 95th percentile on the ICAT. Was told by recruiter he would forward my package to officer recruiter...2 months later haven't heard a thing. Is this another enlistment recruitment strategy or what?
Don't wait for someone to get back to you especially after one week. Find out who the nearest Air Force officer recruiter is around you and be proactive. Set an appointment and stay on top of it. Best of luck to you!
Thank you for your great videos. I am a college graduate and currently i am preparing to take the AFOQT test. I think i will do well in the test and i also hold a good GPA (ME). But i don't have any prior leadership experience and i was always one of those students who stood behind during my college years (shy and nervous) that is also one of the reason why i want to join the military. I want to grow and develop my leadership skills and most importantly i want to serve this nation and set an example in my family (will be the 1st one to be in military). But as i have mentioned, i have no leadership experiences and have never been forwarded in leading or anything like that..do you see my chances in being selected by the selection board despite of my good score and GPA? I am looking into non-rated positions. Does all officer lead the airman? or are there jobs for officers where you will be given tasks and you just complete it without having to lead a team. Dhan- Good luck on your journey with the military. If you get selected for Officer Training School, you'll learn a lot of leadership. Additionally, you'll learn while you work with Airmen. We should be constantly learning throughout our lives. That is what I do. I'm also very reserved but I've learned to speak up as needed and when needed. We all have different leadership styles but see what you're doing well, what needs changes and what you want to improve on. Your officer package needs to be solid to have a good chance of being selected to be an officer. Speak with a recruiter and have them help you as well.

Hello Major, I'm considering applying for OTS after college and I think I want to go straight into the reserves. How do promotions work in the reserves? Do they take the same amount of time as in active duty or longer? Also, what are the two week duty periods like? Do you just do the same thing as on the weekends but for longer?
Promotions are the same for the reserve side but can be a little faster- example- if you have all of the qualifications needed for the next pay grade and you can get selected for the job, you can get promoted. As an officer you will still need to meet the board for a records review and get selected for promotion. It's not an automatic promotion but it is consistent. The annual tour is often done at another location and you'll work with the active duty side. In 2014 I went to England and completed my two week tour with the active duty side. It was great and both the active and reserve sides benefitted from working together.

Sir, do know the chances of becoming a full time Air Guard? I’m a active duty Marine, I’m starting the process of transition over to the Air Guard. How fast is the promotion?
You'll have to find a position that will be active/full time. The positions are out there and sometimes you'll have to move in order to get it. The promotion times will depend on a few things: if the slot you're in allows advancement, time in grade and if you've completed the professional military education.

Sir, I am a former 4-year SrA with a bachelors and trying to go for OTS soon. Do you have any advice for the personal statement on the Form 56 and the recommendation letters? From what I have read, 3 Colonels determine who gets into OTS, and I am not sure what they will be looking for.
First and foremost is leadership.. Show the side that you've led, how you led, how you want to lead and how you've prepared for leadership. Let them know that you are ready for a personal and professional challenge. Include a brief synopsis of what you've done and learned and include teamwork. If I can assist further, let me know.

Contact a recruiter about OCS- Officer Candidate School and let them know you're not a US citizen. If you become a US citizen, it may be easier for you to get accepted. Contact a recruiter and have them explain your options. Good luck.
Would you recommend enlisting before becoming an officer? I'd like to go through college and get a degree while going through the ROTC program but I understand enlisting after college and then becoming an officer gives you more knowledge and "credibility" (I am going to be a senior in HS)
If your goal is to become an officer, I'd do ROTC or the Air Force Academy. Enlisting is a good option but it won't be guaranteed that you'll get selected to commission. College should be your first choice. If that's not an option, then you can enlist. I came in enlisted and had the opportunity to commission later. Explore your options and do what's best for you.

Very likely. I'm aware of Civil Engineering which has a variety of jobs. Contact a recruiter about Officer Training School (OTS) and see what they say. Share with them that you'd like a related career field. Good luck!

Hi, I have a question regarding the social aspects of being an officer in the military. Outside of work, is it normal for an officer to have enlisted friends to go and eat or stuff like that with, or is it mostly officers hang out with other officers and enlisted hang out with enlisted.
That's a great question. You have to be careful when it comes to officer/enlisted relationships, especially when you work in the same organization. Example- I have a professional relationship with the people I work with and some a little more than others but I don't have them on my Facebook and vice-versa. Being prior enlisted MANY of my friends are still enlisted but we're at different bases. We still have the same relationship we had since we became friends. If we're in uniform, it's a natural but professional relationship. As an officer you have to be careful when it comes to favoritism. Bottom line- we're all people and have to make adjustments as needed with our relationships. Thank you for watching.

Hopefully your college has an Air Force ROTC program or another local school in your area that has an agreement with your college. ROTC is a great way that leads to a commission when completed successfully. Officer Training School (OTS) is another way but has fewer slots than ROTC. Do great with your GPA and study for the AFOQT. You can only take this test twice. Which avenue are you thinking of pursuing - ROTC or OTS?
I am considering OTS because my local college does not offer ROTC. I would love to do it, but I can only afford to stay local for college. That is why I am trying to get as much insight I can so I can make the most out of my situation and make my application look great once I get to that point.

It's a good plan but enlisting doesn't guarantee that you'll get selected to commission. Successfully completing ROTC leads to a commission and they'll pay for some of your college. If you do enlist, use tuition assistance to help pay for college. Stand out as an enlisted leader so your OTS package will be solid when you apply. The good news is there more than one way to become an officer in the Air Force.
Hello!! I just joined the Air Force and went into DEP last week. My first job choice is Personnel because is something i really want to do because back in my civilian job i was in human resources so i thought this job would be perfect for me!! I also wanted to join the Air Force because it runs in my family and my husband was prior air force as well. My question is? Is personnel a job that i can hope to be on my recruiter's job availability list or is actually a hard job to get? On demand or not!! I do have other administrative jobs listed but obviously personnel is my number 1 pick. Thank you for your time.
Hi Patricia. Personnel should be an easy job to get as long as there are openings. It’s not an exciting job overall but it is a good job. You’ll meet many people. Tell your recruiter that you’re interested in that career field.

To my knowledge ROTC is primarily for a bachelor's degree. There may be follow up programs for the medical career field. I recommend you visit the Air Force ROTC website and or speak with an ROTC detachment.

Though I've encountered more captains who needed guidance and correction in performing their duties properly than majors who shirked responsibility. It's true that you are always being observed; notes are taken. It isn't a punitive thing. Everyone wants you to succeed...to be the best you can be. Work hard, study, learn...learn. Help others and they will pass it on. The best officers all have one quality in common and that's personal integrity. The military can offer you a great experience but it all depends on you because OTHERS have to depend on you, too.

I'm glad you are speaking to new and potential young officers about how vitally important it is to trust and confide in their senior NCOs. Part of a senior NCOs responsibility is to train, guide and protect their junior officers and grow them into senior officers. But if the junior officers don't coordinate with their SNCO's for input, or worse, interfere with the junior enlisted or the smooth operation of the unit, they do so at their own peril. A good SRNCO will always show respect and courtesy to the RANK of the officer appointed over them (even if the officer is a dirtbag); but if the officer shows respect of their SNCOs' knowledge and wisdom, the officer will find his/her job and the trajectory to higher promotion much, much easier.

Have a well rounded application- do a great job so your leadership will support you, have a great GPA in school, do good with the AFOQT, visit your education center for application guidance/deadlines, volunteer in your community/base, demonstrate what you bring as a leader, have solid letters of recommendations, ask those near you to share their experiences with commissioning whether they are prior enlisted or not. I am currently enlisted as a structural maintainer. I have a little college under my belt, I am contemplating trying to go through the POC-ERP (program) to finish out and commission. I don’t particularly enjoy my job but I respect it, it’s a great skill to have just not something I want to do for the rest of my career.
I would love to become a special investigations officer, or get out of the military and go into law enforcement. I have no interest in the enlisted side of law enforcement. I feel as if I could offer a lot as a leader and exchange learn a lot.

Hi Lyndon. Thank for reaching out to me, watching and subscribing. Both the Army and Air Force are good options. The question to consider is which option is better for you. I can speak on the Air Force side and it has been a great journey. My daughter is doing AF ROTC and she is not under contract. Her friend is doing Army ROTC and she is not under contract either. The Air Force is military but may have a corporate feel to it. From what I hear, the Army is more of a military feel. Consider speaking with the Air Force ROTC detachment and ask them some questions. as a CAP Cadet who has been Cadet First Sergeant, Flight Commander, and Operations Officer, I have Found your videos to be the best for any High School Age Cadet who comes in saying " I want to go to USAFA, and be an Air Force Officer". Currently, I put myself in the dilemma of being a part time College student, who let himself get out of shape, for a few weeks now I have looked into Enlisting reserve as a Boom, but I feel like I don't have the time do go away for 8 months of training.
Well you've had some great leadership roles. Now it's time to focus on yourself physically. You can work out and make it a priority and you'll be in good shape shortly. There is nothing wrong with enlisting so you'll have to decide which option is best for you: enlisted or officer. Think if you want to go active duty or reserve/guard. It's easy to go from active duty to reserve/guard but VERY DIFFICULT to go from reserve/guard to active duty. Work out and give yourself about 2 weeks to look at your options and then pursue the option that is best for you. Thank you for the feedback and for watching.

I'm a Junior in college majoring in Cyber Security. Going to OTS is on my options list because of the experience, career, and certifications, but I'm still very on the fence. Worried about getting a job that I am not interesting in / doesn't relate with Cyber Security. I also have no desire for the money being an officer. I think that I would take a lot of pride of being in the Air Force and military. I also love being a leader and leading teams.
Explore both options of being an officer and coming in enlisted. Both are great options. Serving sometimes means putting yourself second. Do what's best for yourself.

I desperately want to commission. I have been in the Air Force for almost a year now, and I do not regret one minute of it. I signed up for a six year enlistment, however, when I get my 5 level in my career field, I want to finish up my college classes and continue to apply for OTS, and then re-class into OSI. I know they are both competitive, and I have my options open. I have been talking to my SNCO's/ my leadership often about it, and I wanna make my goals clear. I want to do my 20 years. The Air Force has already given me so much when I got deathly sick from my appendix, and they treated me like gold the entire time when I was healing. I really can't say enough good things, but I owe this branch my life!

ROTC is a great way to commission. If you meet the entry requirements from the get go, you can get some type of scholarship as well to pay for school. Visit the ROTC website at www.afrotc.com for more information. Also consider visiting your nearest AFROTC detachment at a university and speaking with them about the program. I enjoyed my time while I did the program. Good luck!
Plan on 6 years active duty enlisted. Then reserves to achieve my Bachelors. To then go back as an Officer until I retire.

All you can is try and see what happens. Ensure your application is solid and your personal statement is well written. Hopefully your GPA and AFOQT scores are the best they can be. Good luck!
Philosophy is arguably the greatest major there is. While it’s unfortunately not as respected as it should be, don’t ever apologize for choosing it. Though I would suggest considering taking up a master’s degree in something more specialized to be more career oriented. Law schools tend to love applicants with Philosophy majors too.

Pursue it if you want to. If you decide to do it, press forward, learn from others and be assertive and a good leader. The rest should fall in place.
If you are like a Doctor, Lawyer, Psychologist, or something like that, are you automatically an officer? How does that process work, if you go in as enlisted and then finish with a degree after? Are you going to go enlisted to officer at that point?
If you come into those career fields, yes you'll be an officer. The commissioning school is about 2-3 weeks (Commission Officer Training). Just because someone has a degree doesn't automatically make them an officer. They have to be selected for a commission and have to complete the commissioning program.

Show the leadership qualities you have and give examples. Inform them on why you want to be an officer and what you bring to the team. Provide examples of challenges you've had and how you overcame them by making adjustments.
I’ve always wanted to study aeronautical engineering as a little boy and fly planes. When I heard of the air force academy it immediately hooked my interest. My question is can you study aeronautical engineering at the academy and fly aircraft as an officer? I’m 17 at the moment so I’m really split on what to do with my life so some help would be nice!

I am currently enlisted and I want to go the rotc route how can I do that? I don't know if this is a silly question, but what is the social life generally like for an officer outside of work? Obviously I'm sure it varies from person, but compared to the enlisted airmen is there any sense of camaraderie amongst officers? I feel like I see alot of enlisted enjoying outings and bonding together off-duty, but I don't really hear or see much about what it's like for the officers. I'm just curious to get an idea of what it might be like for a young, single officer.
It's the same for the enlisted side, however, there are fewer officers when compared to the enlisted side. You'll be young officers like even if they're in other units and you'll have fun. Don't worry about that if that's the case. When I commissioned I met new great people.

So your a security officer right? I have a question... as for firearms how does it work? Starting I heard that when your at a duty station after tech school, do you get your pistol/holster do you keep it and leave it your room or do you get it at the counter before your shift then return it? My career field is Personnel. The firearms are not kept with the individual. They are kept in an official building (vault) and stay there all of the time while you're off duty.

If you attend ROTC, you'll be a commissioned officer upon completion of the program. You will not attend OTS since both of those programs (ROTC & OTS) lead to a commission.

Yes to both. Colonel is a possibility but general is most likely 99% NOT going to happen.

Most generals are rated officers (backgrounds like pilots, navigators) and space. My career field is Personnel which falls under Support. There are VERY FEW Personnel officers and it is very competitive.

Mario- you can either wait until you become a US Citizen or you can enlist and apply to become a US Citizen while you're in. Definitely speak with a recruiter as they know the process to do this.
I'm going for officer. I feel that I have what it takes no doubt. Wrestled my whole life, graduated college last spring, scored 95th percentile on the ICAT. Was told by recruiter he would forward my package to officer recruiter...2 months later haven't heard a thing. Is this another enlistment recruitment strategy or what?
Don't wait for someone to get back to you especially after one week. Find out who the nearest Air Force officer recruiter is around you and be proactive. Set an appointment and stay on top of it. Best of luck to you!

I believe he does like it. That was my number one choice but I got personnel since I was prior enlisted personnel and my degree is in HR.

Thank you for your great videos. I am a college graduate and currently i am preparing to take the AFOQT test. I think i will do well in the test and i also hold a good GPA (ME). But i don't have any prior leadership experience and i was always one of those students who stood behind during my college years (shy and nervous) that is also one of the reason why i want to join the military. I want to grow and develop my leadership skills and most importantly i want to serve this nation and set an example in my family (will be the 1st one to be in military). But as i have mentioned, i have no leadership experiences and have never been forwarded in leading or anything like that..do you see my chances in being selected by the selection board despite of my good score and GPA? I am looking into non-rated positions. Does all officer lead the airman? or are there jobs for officers where you will be given tasks and you just complete it without having to lead a team.

Dhan- Good luck on your journey with the military. If you get selected for Officer Training School, you'll learn a lot of leadership. Additionally, you'll learn while you work with Airmen. We should be constantly learning throughout our lives. That is what I do. I'm also very reserved but I've learned to speak up as needed and when needed. We all have different leadership styles but see what you're doing well, what needs changes and what you want to improve on. Your officer package needs to be solid to have a good chance of being selected to be an officer. Speak with a recruiter and have them help you as well.

Hello Major, I'm considering applying for OTS after college and I think I want to go straight into the reserves. How do promotions work in the reserves? Do they take the same amount of time as in active duty or longer?
Also, what are the two week duty periods like? Do you just do the same thing as on the weekends but for longer?
Promotions are the same for the reserve side but can be a little faster- example- if you have all of the qualifications needed for the next pay grade and you can get selected for the job, you can get promoted. As an officer you will still need to meet the board for a records review and get selected for promotion. It's not an automatic promotion but it is consistent. The annual tour is often done at another location and you'll work with the active duty side. In 2014 I went to England and completed my two week tour with the active duty side. It was great and both the active and reserve sides benefitted from working together.

You'll have to find a position that will be active/full time. The positions are out there and sometimes you'll have to move in order to get it. The promotion times will depend on a few things: if the slot you're in allows advancement, time in grade and if you've completed the professional military education.

Sir, I am a former 4-year SrA with a bachelors and trying to go for OTS soon. Do you have any advice for the personal statement on the Form 56 and the recommendation letters? From what I have read, 3 Colonels determine who gets into OTS, and I am not sure what they will be looking for.
First and foremost is leadership.. Show the side that you've led, how you led, how you want to lead and how you've prepared for leadership. Let them know that you are ready for a personal and professional challenge. Include a brief synopsis of what you've done and learned and include teamwork. If I can assist further, let me know.

Contact a recruiter about OCS- Officer Candidate School and let them know you're not a US citizen. If you become a US citizen, it may be easier for you to get accepted. Contact a recruiter and have them explain your options. Good luck.
Would you recommend enlisting before becoming an officer? I'd like to go through college and get a degree while going through the ROTC program but I understand enlisting after college and then becoming an officer gives you more knowledge and "credibility" (I am going to be a senior in HS)
If your goal is to become an officer, I'd do ROTC or the Air Force Academy. Enlisting is a good option but it won't be guaranteed that you'll get selected to commission. College should be your first choice. If that's not an option, then you can enlist. I came in enlisted and had the opportunity to commission later. Explore your options and do what's best for you.

Explore both options. I was both enlisted and officer and maximize on both sides. Definitely look into Officer Training School to see if that's an option. If not, enlisting is also a great way to serve while being on a great team.
Would having tattoos to both elbows but no lower disqualify me for OTS since I have my degree in Psychology?
No and that's based on the new tattoo policy that went into effect this year. Of-course the recruiter would be the better source of information than me so check with them.
Do you remember hearing about the selection process for CSO? How competitive it is or anything?

I do not know. A recruiter would probably have insight on the needs of the Air Force at the current time.
Hi, I have a question regarding the social aspects of being an officer in the military. Outside of work, is it normal for an officer to have enlisted friends to go and eat or stuff like that with, or is it mostly officers hang out with other officers and enlisted hang out with enlisted.

That's a great question. You have to be careful when it comes to officer/enlisted relationships, especially when you work in the same organization. Example- I have a professional relationship with the people I work with and some a little more than others but I don't have them on my Facebook and vice-versa. Being prior enlisted MANY of my friends are still enlisted but we're at different bases. We still have the same relationship we had since we became friends. If we're in uniform, it's a natural but professional relationship. As an officer you have to be careful when it comes to favoritism. Bottom line- we're all people and have to make adjustments as needed with our relationships. Thank you for watching.

I am currently a freshman in college pursuing a degree in cyber-security. I wish to become a commissioned non- rated officer in the air force upon graduation because I want to use my knowledge for something bigger than myself and so I can help other people. Can you please give me any tips that would help me stand out during the application process that would give me a competitive edge upon board selection?
Hopefully your college has an Air Force ROTC program or another local school in your area that has an agreement with your college. ROTC is a great way that leads to a commission when completed successfully. Officer Training School (OTS) is another way but has fewer slots than ROTC. Do great with your GPA and study for the AFOQT. You can only take this test twice. Which avenue are you thinking of pursuing - ROTC or OTS?
I am considering OTS because my local college does not offer ROTC. I would love to do it, but I can only afford to stay local for college. That is why I am trying to get as much insight I can so I can make the most out of my situation and make my application look great once I get to that point.

It's a good plan but enlisting doesn't guarantee that you'll get selected to commission. Successfully completing ROTC leads to a commission and they'll pay for some of your college. If you do enlist, use tuition assistance to help pay for college. Stand out as an enlisted leader so your OTS package will be solid when you apply. The good news is there more than one way to become an officer in the Air Force.
Hello!! I just joined the Air Force and went into DEP last week. My first job choice is Personnel because is something i really want to do because back in my civilian job i was in human resources so i thought this job would be perfect for me!! I also wanted to join the Air Force because it runs in my family and my husband was prior air force as well. My question is? Is personnel a job that i can hope to be on my recruiter's job availability list or is actually a hard job to get? On demand or not!! I do have other administrative jobs listed but obviously personnel is my number 1 pick. Thank you for your time.
Hi Patricia. Personnel should be an easy job to get as long as there are openings. It’s not an exciting job overall but it is a good job. You’ll meet many people. Tell your recruiter that you’re interested in that career field.

To my knowledge ROTC is primarily for a bachelor's degree. There may be follow up programs for the medical career field. I recommend you visit the Air Force ROTC website and or speak with an ROTC detachment.

False. I've seen prior enlisted make general (few, but it can happen).

Yes I was a civilian during my time in AFROTC. I used my Post 9-11 GI Bill for school and I worked part-time as well.
