- Founded in 2019 by President Donald Trump, the United States Space Force is the newest branch of the US military. Since then it has been met with jokes, misunderstanding, and even a satirical series on Netflix.
Insider visited Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, to learn more about the Space Force and to document the guardians in Delta 4, who are taught to detect incoming missiles from adversaries.

Space Force Is The Newest US Military Branch. But What Do They Actually Do? | Boot Camp
Space Force might sound like a joke now but every American should remember it could become the most important branch of the US military this century.
I'll stop laughing when ODSTs become real, then I'll reenlist if I'm not long dead.
Ok senpai
As long as we forget that the Outer Space Treaty exists, it's all dandy, gotcha.
They should've called it "cyber" or "electronic". Both Russian and China re-organized theirs around 2010s, which included their satellite operations, so our move was appropriate. Just the name "space force" is ridiculous.
The XCOM project has been greenlit
Space force seems inevitable, the Airforce was apart of the Army until the late 40s and became its own thing partly because of the Nuclear threat. Now that the Nuclear threat is more powerful and more difficult it seems like the appropriate response to build a Space oriented force.
Maybe the Air Force will be the USMC of the Space Force in 200 years.
@@calypsohandjack9278 I've thought of that but I think the space force already has tropps
Iran must be destroyed
They make small satellite so it hard to hit
Doing that, we could have wifi if the mainland got attack
Wrong
Early days, but it sounds like they're mostly focused on tech, defense, and cybersecurity. I can see this eventually becoming where the most intelligent/academically inclined military personnel sign up.
There’s a really obvious joke in here somewhere but out of respect for the smartest people with Down syndrome, I will refrain from disrespecting them.
No just the ones who don't want to see combat
"make sure you speak up a bit, but OUTSTANDING" I wish I joined this branch instead hahaha
I can't HEAR YOU !!
Concur.
Could have been a bit more realistic.
That's motivation, right there
In reality, all of the Space Force's capabilities already existed through other branches, primarily the Air Force. The new branch was a logistical streamlining, taking all the various parts of US space defense and putting it under one umbrella. Not necessarily needed, but it makes funding and administration much easier. One of the few positive things done for the military during the last administration.
Department of the Air Force’s Space Force.
All branches will still have related roles though. For instance, SATCOM and Cyber are still a vital part of the Army and Navy.
The thing is, the last administration only signed it into existence. ALL of the organization and heavy lifting was done during the Bush and Obama administrations. President Obama had the option to sign the branch in, but opted to pass, believing the time wasn't right. As far as how useful the Space Force is, one need only look at the war in Ukraine. They are effectively an active participant providing real-time Intel and probably assisting on the cyber front.
I agreed until you said it was a good thing for the military. It was a waste of time and money. Air Force Space Command already had the job handled.
The previous administration did something positive???
When the US Marine Corps was founded people living in the late 18th century could have never imagined that only two and a half centuries later, those Marines would be traveling into battle on the tilt motor Osprey, or aboard ships the size of the largest buildings that existed back then. I like to think that maybe in 250 more years the Space Force will be in full-on power armor dropping onto the surface of IO or Europa.
Yes they imagined that an even more. Mesopotamia … flying battles are ancient
Space Marines
When I heard about the Space Force, I immediately thought of Star Trek or The Expanse. I really wanted to do that kind of sci-fi stuff ever since I was a kid. Then reality hit me and I realized that we probably won't do any of that shit in my lifetime. Only 20 years old, but still I get the sense that all of that cool technology is far off from now. Damnit. Born too early.
@@CrazyCreation4 no, that won’t happen. Space travel does not work that way. Will probably never fight wars on other planets.
@@nubgaming1013 you don't know anything 😂
Interestingly, Australia also began it's 4th Branch of the military at the same time, called Space Command.
My thoughts on this is that they are using Space to monitor ICBM's from Asia and having an ally in the South Hemisphere allows for more comprehensive surveillance.
❤ space force is not only for the USA- it is for the world- the Republic will Return.
China's also got a Space Force IIRC, and we can only imagine what they might be working on right now (anti-satellite weapons, EMP nuke vehicles, etc.). Australia especially would be foolish to not take this stuff seriously, since they're so much closer to Chinese territory. Heck, Russia did a reckless anti-satellite weapons test of their own before the war in Ukraine, and didn't tell NASA or apparently their own organization Roscomos beforehand (debris was just scattered everywhere in that orbit area). We're living in an age where everyone better start looking upwards more.
@@Blackafternoon What are you smoking ? LOL
5 eyes will always be working in close conjunction.
Lolol "buzz lightyear to space command, do you read space command?"
I strongly believe this is gonna be the most important military branch in the future. It basically manages and controls us from above and beyond.
Nope, it's just an inefficient more taxable fusion of the others
Agreed, orbit is the new high ground. Folks thought the early Air Forces in WWI were a joke until the pilots started carrying shotguns and grenades, then it happened again in the navies in early WWII when battleships were afraid to hit the open seas without the protection of an aircraft carrier and were relegated to essentially shore bombardment. Once one satellite drops that first tungsten telephone pole on a target, or that first Dragon capsule full of Space Force techs steals an opponent's satellite. it's game on. This doesn't even get into the Luna shenanigans that are bound to start. Right now we are essentially just in the recon phase of the branch.
@@Boomer289-ol2vvit's way more efficient than having space assets split between several branches and command structures.
@@FlyingAlfredoSaucer still taxable
@@Boomer289-ol2vv Space force will easily be the most important branch in the future. It's the new frontier. You don't know what you're talking about.
We joke but the fact they saved troops at al Assad shows the necessity and validity of the branch to protect troops. Keep it up space force!
They saved no one. Now we'll ALL have someone to make fun of instead of the airforce. They are the first line of defense in nothing

My first assignment in the AF 20 years ago was to Air Force Space Command. It always felt like it's own world outside of the AF, with it's top heavy rank structure, no aircraft assigned to the base and the insane Space budget. Pretty cool to see it morph into it's own actual service and some of the men and women I knew as NCO's / CGO's now running the show.

I definitely gained a better understanding and respect for this new branch of our military with this video; thanks!!!
let me make it simple, they protect our telecommunications which is critical to our security and our quality of life. Anything that requires transferring data over a cable or satellite is what they monitor and defend. The air force used to do this but given the importance of telecommunication infrastructure it required a dedicated branch. And going by this video it looks like they rolled some other responsibilities into the space force. Missile defense is no joke, hell they are basically a modern version of NORAD.
They should be called "satellite and missile systems" force.
Everyone laughed at the Air Force when it was created, saying it's unnecessary for it to split off from the Army Air Corps. Now it's arguably the most important branch in the military period.
That still doesn’t justify turning the Air Force Space Command into a new branch of the military. President bone Spur just got talked into it and it sounded good.
@@jamesgabaldon1239 You can criticize Trump all you want but if we were to think of this purely in military standards the Space domain is absolutely a need for a new branch, sure the AF could do it and have been doing it for a while but with the SF focusing on space and AF focusing on air superiority I think it's the right call.
@@impakt6345 You can think what you want. When the Air Force was in charge of the SIBRS system I was in JTAGS in the Army. JTAGS use both the SIBRS sattalites and DSP sattlites and have a crew of only 3 Soldiers forward deployed in combat theatre pulling the same mission as the SIBRS crew of 35 Airmen. The ammount of time the crew of 35 Airmen consistently incorrectly identified missiles was astonishing. They would consitently label SRBM's as MRBM's all the time. It was quite pathetic. The missile warning center would consistently ring us up cause the 4 JTAGS Sites would label a missile and SIBRS would label it completly different. It's is a pretty big deal when 2 JTAGS sites label a possible threat as an SRBM comming out of North Korea that is gonna impact in the ocean but SIBRS is saying they launched an ICBM with a projected impact on the west coast.
This sounds amazing. Can we get a new video on Army shared operations?

I think the Space Force needs their own style of uniforms. Seems silly to wear camo at a domestic base. This should be the branch of the future, so they should look futuristic. I know their dress uniforms look like the ones from BSG, but their everyday ones should be coveralls or something. Really lean into the entire future fantasy. There's nothing wrong with having function AND form.
they could wear jumpsuits kind of like a fighter pilot or an astronaut.
@@edgeldine3499 I don't think it should be a jumpsuit but I think it should be made to be compatible with potential future US military space suits. Flexible and tight fit, sort of like a jumpsuit.

they should be issued uniforms that look like Levi's denim overalls, an off white t-shirt and a bass pro shop hat so as to blend in with the local population.
Space Force reminds me when the Army Air Corps was split off to the Air Force after WW2. Probably the same pros/cons from various political leaders and general public about the split back then. Zero complaints today about the Army Air Corps split. I imagine Space Force will be indispensable just like the Air Force in the decades to come.
The Army Air Corps was replaced by the Army Air Forces in 1941. It was the Army Air Forces who split from the Army on 18 September 1947 to form the Air Force.
@@baron7755 Nice to know. The major change was in 1947 when newly formed Air Force branch became an independent fighting military branch with equal footing with the Army, Navy, Marianes, and Coast Guard and didn't need to report within the Army chain-of-command. Space Force!

Does NORAD , still watch for missiles or is it a combined function.
They minitor and prevent extreme change in solar state of beings i guessed ..from earth speed o f rotation to orientation to polar ice condition control gravity , jet stream , earth magnetic shield ect...
Imagine how many people who laughed and scoffed at the idea of an air force 100 years ago. Most people had either never seen an airplane and still thought that flight was just a childish dream. Now having air superiority is one of, if not, the most important asset to a military. I hope I live long enough for the space force to take over that roll.
No, a hundred years ago would have been 1922/23. We had just come out of the largest war the world had ever seen to date. Aircraft conflict was taken very seriously, especially with the invention of the bomber in the later part of the war. Most people strongly believed that aircraft would dominate the next war, which it turned out they did.
So does NORAD fall under the Space Force now or does the Air Force still control that aspect of monitoring?
Planning to enlist soon 🫡
I can see the value of dedicating a military force to protecting our digital and exospheric assets against adversaries. Imagine if a satellite was compromised and we all lost GPS capabilities or our country's financial technology was compromised.
It would be less confusing if it was called Space Guard like Coast Guard instead of Space Force. They basically guard Space domain. They are not an offensive force. I see as more and more civilian companies launch into space and manned space missions become common, Sace Force/Space Guard may also provide a Search and rescue serice like the Coast Guard and maybe an interdiction of illegal substances too (Though I dont think anything is illegal in space yet)
Agreed. Space Guard sounds legitimate, serious, and necessary. Space Force sounds exactly like Steve Carell’s TV series combined with buzz lightyear. I wish they put more thought into a proper name. Space Defense? Space Defense Corp? Astro Defense Force? Orbital Defense Corp? Maybe a name that includes the name satellite or technology in it? Something. Anything that doesn’t give the public the impression that they are a whimsical group of Starship Troopers ready to assault Mars or repel a Cylons invasion.
Cyberwarfare can be offensive. Antisatellite weapons are offensive.
Their best defense is a strong offense. They are not going to advertise those capabilities, but they obviously exist.
Is there a cross over between them and NORAD for monitoring North Anerica?
What’s different with what they’re doing compared to NSA , NGA , NRO and other agencies?
Here is the issue with some of your comments. it was most branches "job" to handle the issues. now it is only one branch. no matter what branch it is why would anyone downgrade any of the branches. Jw, I may be wrong. so, let's say instead of 20 different people, it's just 5 handling an issue. Space Force was formed to identify and catch, or shall I say take the stress off the other branches. I feel like people don't understand the newest branch, but also don't understand the reason. it is better to have 2 hands on something them 30 hands on something. if you can't understand the reason why this branch was made then you have not looked at the USA history. Branches were created for a reason.
I’m going to assume retaining personnel in the Space Force will very difficult past the first contract. Most of these jobs will pay very very well in the civilian sector. Can’t imagine it’s a very hard decision to reenlist or not.
As a current member of the space force looking at separating (trying to get something more stable for family life), this is VERY true. Space Force experience makes you extremely hirable to hundreds of companies that will pay well above 6 figures as long as you're semi-competent. I'm a year out, and I've already had a multitude of different companies messaging me on LinkedIn trying to hire me. If you have anyone who's debating it, push them into it ASAP, and make sure they go officer.
I will say though, the amount of people trying to get in is insane. I don't think the Space Force will have trouble with recruitment anytime in the next several decades. It's tiny, between 10,000 and 20,000 personnel, with limited jobs. They'll fill their lower ranks, but may struggle maintaining higher leadership positions.

However, the Air Force requires a General score of 64 minimum. If you have a bachelors, you could go the officer route. Space Force officers tend to be utilized in operational roles and only go managerial after 4-10 years. @@emperorpalpatine1469 let the hate flow through you, Palpatine 👍
Let's give a shout out to those intrepid men and women now entering ROTC and OCS, seeking to become officers in the Space Force. Yes, hats off to our Space Cadets!
Seriously, though, the US should be building Star Furies and Hyperion Cruisers. They Star Furies make sense because they were designed to reflect our current understanding of physics and combat in space (multiple thrusters on four pylon-wings).
when should i sign up so i can get stationed on Neptune fighting aliens?
Why do they have combat patches? Not trying to hate but, when did they Space Force deploy?
5:44 I spy a Top Gun fan
Those instructors are not yelling that much at them, more hands on teaching than other groups I have seen. This is more modern teaching that works the best.
Depends on the branch ground troops such as army and marines need the yelling
Contrary to the title, all what is shown is training done after tech school, the yelling would have been done months before in basic training
This is mostly tech school, not bootcamp
well you cant really yell in space😅
very innovative branch. as an army nco im jealous. makes me want to switch over.
Buckley used to be an Air Force Reserve Base so this is good for the Colorado community that it is now an active duty base.
Buckley was turned into an active duty base in the early 90s when it absorbed the mission of nearby Lowry AFB.
Protect our planet from extraterrestrial threats including meteorites, raging solar storms and black holes from swallowing our earth.
Imagine the job opportunities that will be available to the students just getting out of high school or college from this
You’ll need at least a secret but preferably a TS/SCI go get a job there but if you can get that you’ll be making 6 digits easily
Oh Wow, I didn't know about the split off from the Air Force. I'm curious as to how this will work out.
Absolutely needed and will evolve over time and expand capabilities etc. … it’s new but a front line of the near future. Just wish they kept the more usual military terms vs Guardian and the more creative names
Just went into space and now we’re starting with war in space 😭
Before the second oldest profession (soldiering) reaches space, I am sure some billionaire will buy a Spacex launch to take the oldest profession to space
Omg they even call them guardians !
They didn’t pick the name 😢
of course they do, because some 4 decades ago their predecessor, USAF Space Command, were called Guardians of the Frontier.
space force: I'm important
other branches: 😂 lol whatever you say
UNSC: *what did you just say*
other branches: nothin.... 😐
How do all the officers already have deployment patches? Space Force just got made a few years ago
No satellites mean no WiFi and no GPS. The US government realized that it needed to be protected and it also offers another line of defense in cybersecurity
it must be the coolest thing to tell someone you are in the space force
You see I don’t mind paying taxes for stuff like this. But I’d like to see more uap videos unclassified, it’s clear we’re not alone in the universe. But people out here wanna know what else is out there possibly visiting us too. That’s awesome. Don’t keep that back from us, it’s fascinating
You realize that the logo of the spaceforce is the famous secret tr3b spacecraft that is built by the USA with reversed engineered extraterrestrial technology from recoveries from the last 70 years and now they have a bunch of triangle spaceships that are secret
They have already pulled of great feats, like getting a chimp in a space station to use tools. It went a little south, but the concept was solid.
