i love how different people do different problems. on mythbusters they carefully line it up, build a robot, analyse the arrows. here its like "hey dude, make some axes and gimme a bow"
Mythbusters: Used metal axes These guys: Used foam axes That will make a big difference since these guys hit the axes pretty much every time which would have deflected the arrow if they were made of metal.
@@jamesjellis That isn’t really a needed factor since its the part of shooting through the holes. Its just them trying to not accidentally kill someone with a deflected arrow.
@@jamesjellis Not really. If anything it makes it harder. Where hitting the edge of the hole in a metal axe has a chance that the arrow will deflect back toward the center, with the foam all but the most glancing blow the foam will deform and place considerably more drag on the shaft than a metal one would. Furthermore the light weight of the foam means it has less resistance to rotating, thereby closing up the hole's cross-section and catching the arrow by its fletches. Either way with a small hole that long the arrow is going to bounce off the sides quite a bit because arrows bend and wobble in flight. It would take a true master to time the wobble so that it doesn't touch all the way though. Of course, that's kind of the whole point of the test...

Hey Niko, not sure you'll see this but it's worth a shot. I've done competitive recurve archery for four years and was trained by the first female gold medalist of Korea. I just wanted to say, I'm so glad to see how your form has been improving! It's clear that you've been practicing quite a lot, and I definitely see the huge improvement you've made since the early archery days of the corridor channel. The one thing I'd advise is that while you have like 90% of your form correct (at least in regards to Olympic style competitive recurve archery), a key component you are missing is that you should keep your anchoring hand tucked right under your chin (with your fingers touching your jawline and your lip touching the string) at full anchor. Due to the design of the modern recurve bow, this is the position at which the arrow flies along an optimal straight and consistent path every time you shoot. Hope you find that helpful in your shooting! Again, congrats on the huge improvement in your archery skills and I look forward to more archery content in your videos! (ps, feel free to hit me up in the LA area if you ever want free archery lessons!)
I've shot a bow like 3 times, so take this as an amateur asking a question not me being a know-it-all. I was under the impression the "bring it back to X position" is more about consistency than form. Meaning that if you hold the arrow differently every time then you're not going to learn how to adjust your aim as much. The jaw/lip position is the best for distance and straightness? Again, I'm seriously just asking and trying to explain why I thought that. Thanks for your time. Recurve Bows Can't Melt Steel Arrows!
That is assuming they are using a Olympic Recurve, which they clearly isnt. They are using traditional bow which means there is no sight (obviously) hence the "palm under jawline" wont work. The best way to aim a traditional recurve is with 3 fingers under the nocking point and have the nocking point situated on the inner corner of your eye(between ur eye and the bridge of ur nose)
Windy blower I shoot both English longbow and barebow recurve (without sights) and what bushdid9/11 said can apply to both of those bows. They use American flatbows- very similar to English longbows however they have an arrow rest so the technique will be very similar to the bow types I shoot (I have also shot American flatbow and the technique works).
Yes be impressed by a bunch of people NOT recreating the shot accurately. If they had used metal axes they would NOT have succeeded as you can clearly see the arrow hits the axe heads in every shot and a metal axe head would deflect the arrow a lot more. Also their holes are too big.
she didn't forget who her husband was Athena told her to have her suitors preform a task that only Odysseus could pull off, the men were not claiming to be Odysseus they were her suitors ie looking to marry his widow
@Eric von Hippel Penelope also didn't believe the man to be Odysseus until he described how their bed was handcrafted from an olive tree that was still rooted.
The real challenge wasn’t shooting it through the axe heads it was tiring the bow at all. The bow in the story has a draw strength of something like 300 pounds and Odysseus was the only one who could really do it because he’s awesome
Now that I think about it. Odysseus must’ve had one hell of a strong back, especially if he could shoot a bow with a 300 pound draw strength. Dang. Lol
Yeah, the bow was so powerful, no other man could ever string it, much less fire it accurately. They are not even using an ordinary warbow. Nothing even close.
Nice try, y’all forgot one major part of the challenge, the bow that belonged to Odysseus was made for him, and was extremely strong, the first part of the challenge was to string the bow. Then shoot the arrow through the axe loops.
TallicaMan1986 the version of the Odyssey I read the bow was made of segmented wood bound in leather think of it as a phone book each page (piece of wood) is fragile by itself but added to the book (bow) it became stronger and stronger the challenge itself wasnt about strength either but technique as Odysseus's bow was a specific bow the challengers knew nothing about as it required the leg and arm to string it as it was crafted to be to strong to string with just arms
Some scholars actually suspect that it may have been recurve, which did exist then, but was very rare. The technique to string a recurve is very different from the bows all the other lords would be used to, so only Odysseus was able to do it because he knew the technique. After all, Odysseus's greatest attribute is his intellect, not his raw strength. It is this very feature that makes hims stand out against so many other Golden Age of War heroes.
Many scholars think it is because the bows were of composite recurve design, which is hard to string if you don't know how to. If you do, you can string it like Odysseus, without "standing up"
I think the axes would’ve been actual metal axes so they wouldn’t really move that much so if it hit it it wouldn’t just still keep going it would probably just stop
What I realized watching this video is that nothing they did was accurate. They used foam instead of metal axes (metal would deflect the arrow a LOT more and 100% of their shots hit the axes so would have deflected). Their holes are larger than the myths. Be impressed if you want but it's not that impressive since everything they changed made the shot easier to make.
So.... I always figured that the axe heads in question were axe heads removed from their hafts, and the holes to be shot through were the holes for those hafts. I always found it odd that the common interpretation required either ornate Hollywood style axes or modified axes.
Yes, the target was through the hole of the hafts. From the translated early version by A.T. Murray (1919): "...even from the chair where he sat, and let fly the shaft with sure aim, and did not miss the end of the handle of one of the axes, but clean through and out at the end passed the arrow weighted with bronze."
Martyaxvar Hmm, nice prose translation. I grew up with a proper poetry translation with the original rhythmic style of the memorized 48 songs, that were finally written down in the classical period. Of cause this did require a bit of poetic license to the famed translator.
@@johnfrancisdoe1563 WOW! I sure will try finding the poetic one in the future! If your interested, my source is an online database called Perseus Digital Library. All I see is a group of guys modifying the myth to make it many times easier (making the holes larger than they should be, making the axes out of foam not metal so the arrow does NOT deflect like it should). It is easy to look good at everything when you cheat and change the parameters of the test.

Anyone watching this...hit settings and set the speed all the down to .25 on TOP of the already slow motion! You'll see that the feathers on the arrow are what causes the foam axes to move NOT the actual arrow! INCREDIBLE!!!
Just saying the axes were made out of metal and that makes it more difficult because the arrow that Nick shot did go through but touched the edges, if it was metal it would have ricocheted off, even Mythbusters did a video on it.

"Check this sh*t out... we were on our way home... and these wicked hot chick's were all 'hey baby' and my boys were all 'oh yeah' and I was 'no way' so I had that whole thing to deal with... then there was this ... um... giant dude trying to fight us.. and check this... he had ONE eye..."
Actually, King of ithaca,I recently finished the book in one of my classes
I came to this channel from mythbusters... and watching this gave me such a freddiew vibe... 😮
This video is awesome!
(Edit) ok I’ve just watched a few more vids and I started recognising some of the team lol. Subscribed!
Niko! You absolute UNIT!
6:45 that was very smooth, didn’t expect that when he was just joking around
"ill hold it, you pull it back" ahh the voice of alcohol, ive missed you old friend
Damn, Niko (and the other guy who missed the 2nd time, though) is literally Hawkeye :D But really, this was awesome. Thanks, RUclips recommendations. Even though I subscribed to this and watch it all the time.
I always knew Niko was my favorite. Now I know why.
Forget firing the arrow through the axes... the suiters couldn't even string his bow, lol
Everyone who was in freshman year English: “hey I have seen this one before”
"My neck! Give me a standing desk!"
"My knees are achy..."
God damn it, Clint. You'r e one of those employees...
Well, he does take some funky health oils so caring about ergonomics is just par for the course.
Niko:* *makes it* *
Nick: hold my beer.
The Only one who can challenge Niko is D... I want Niko vs D showdown
We were just reading/watching The Odyssey is school, and now I see this from a channel I watch, and that's pretty cool.
Niko is the king, I will gladly watch videos in his honor.
4:50 If only he had $100, could have bought a new arm :P
Nick, the PUBG champion, obviously got the arrow through the axes!
"Awww! Son of a bun, dude!" That's my new catchphrase
Niko, the reincarnation of Odysseus
Niko was born with cheat codes
"what was there else?" "the trojan war?"
You don't say, the whole reason he went away from his home…
I literally just finished the Odyssey in class, and just saw the thumbnail and just was, HOW
okay?
Anyone watching this...hit settings and set the speed all the down to .25 on TOP of the already slow motion! You'll see that the feathers on the arrow are what causes the foam axes to move NOT the actual arrow! INCREDIBLE!!!
Leave the sound on for 6:35 onwards and you'll question existence
Niko already looks like a greek god
Why is Niko amazing at EVERYTHING!!! Lol!
6:30 is like that scene from brave when that guy keeps making the arrow fall out but then accidentally gets a bullseye
Long live the king!
When you have 99 ranged
Dear left handed guy,
If you pinch the arrow, it won't travel off the rest
why is niko so good! twice in a row! even though he still makes the axe move... but still good!
Just saying the axes were made out of metal and that makes it more difficult because the arrow that Nick shot did go through but touched the edges, if it was metal it would have ricocheted off, even Mythbusters did a video on it.
King Niko, First of His Name, King of the Andals the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms.
Wait, what about Protector of the Realm?
Have you seen him at Airsoft TTT? Even as an innocent, he's not out to protect others, unless it's by killing the traitors.
Hey Clint....having your monitors on perfect eye level is not the healthy and natural posture you are looking for. You should aim for a slightly downward look so your neck is not straightened all the way. Think boutique your spine. It is curved kinda like an S. That is what you should aim for,
Indeed, the best practice is to have the top edge of the monitor at eye level.
Modern day Archers: Only someone like Odysseus can make a shot like that.
Niko and Nick: Give us that bow and arrow.
I think I discovered the most awesome RUclips-channel of all time
