    After you shop vac up the dust from the surfaces, go a step or two further. I usually hit it again with either a leaf blower or the shop vac as a general blower, then I also hit it again with a compressor with a small nozzle. There are plenty hard-to-reach places where small paint chips and dust hide. Going over it more than once with different tools and from different angles ensures you don't have much debris on the surface. After all, you want to paint wood, not dust and loose chips.

    I’m a carpenter....not a painter, though I paint very well.
    I’ve never painted anything THAT neglected,
    However my Go-to sanding method is a drywall pole sander with 80grits...I tear up a lot of sandpaper...
    And have even broke a few pole ends but for $14 for 40 sheets and $18 a pole I don’t really give a crap...it Let’s me sand ALOT more area from a single standing position.
    With no need to trip over extension cords.
    😊 and yes,I go with Gator brand sand paper because “why not?”
    I imagine it’s pretty hard to fuck up the manufacturing of glass paper.

    Man I hate when the siding is like that. It makes it so much harder to scrape and feather out when sanding. Thay siding came out good. That paint just cane right off for ya. Did you check to see if it was lead ? I know it was most likely oil paint but you never know.

      When removing thick old paint like that, you can start with very coarse sand paper, 60 or 80 grit. That is much more abrasive and will remove paint very quickly. Actually so quick, you should use it carefully and only over areas with paint. Avoid sanding on same place too long, as it will expose the wood and start removing wood too. Once the major areas with paint are done, you can switch to higher grit, like in video and you'll just fine sand to smooth everything up. You can even go with very fine grit later, to make it glass smooth, but not necessary.

    How long do you wait for primer to dry and is it a good idea to sand the dried primer before putting on the first coat?

    • @GatorFinishing
      @GatorFinishing  7 лет назад +2

      Your best bet would be to look up whatever brand and type of paint they bought online, and follow the manufacturers recommendation. Otherwise, a 24 hour time limit is always safe to go by…as long as the temperature and conditions your painting in aren’t below a certain degree to where the paint wont completely dry and cure. Yes, you should lightly scuff primer with 220 before you paint… but it also depends on what you’re doing and what you’re painting. When referring to this video, You really don't need to sand the primer before you paint an exterior shed.

      I restore antiques,I learned from a man who made his living doing so....
      He learned from his father....who also made his living doing so.
      We’ve all three been butthole deep in lead paint many times over.
      F*ck Lead paint.
      You’d have to eat a spoon full of it everyday for a month before being subjected to any ails as a result.

    What grit sand paper do you use

    • @GatorFinishing
      @GatorFinishing  2 года назад

      Any coarse grit is great for REMOVAL - then you can step up, depending how smooth you want your finish and if you are painting or staining! Hope this helps

    • @macruz8503
      @macruz8503 4 года назад +2

      In the video he mentions 40 grit sandpaper. I don’t the brand matters as long as it fits your sander.

    • @nilsfrahm1323
      @nilsfrahm1323 3 года назад +2

      You need multiple, start with 40 or 60, remove most paint, then with 100 or 120 remoe remaining and smooth out the transitions between paint and wood, so you have an even surface. In my opinion if some areas with paint remain even after intense sanding, it means it has strong bond to wood, and you can safely paint over it, it will not detach from wood in the future.

    I wouldn’t waste my time with that palm sander. Strip it all the way down with an angle grinder and wood sanding/flapper discs. You can even get an angle grinder that is variable speed if you’re worried about cutting into the wood.
    You can even use a hand block plane to knock most of the ridges down before using the grinder.

    • @Gsxrtrix
      @Gsxrtrix 5 лет назад +1

      Tried that on my cedar shake. Even the slightest angle indents the cedar creating circular grooves. I am going to try a random orbital sander next. Any other ideas?
      I have solid color alkyd stain chipping badly and scraper doesn’t seem to work well.

    • @nilsfrahm1323
      @nilsfrahm1323 3 года назад +2

      Just use palm or disk sander with small grit, like 40 or 60 grit paper, and keep speed lower. On low speed the paper grips onto the old paint and pulls it off and if not holding well, it will come loose and fall. High speed for sander is used for high grit paper, to make smooth surface.
