Follow these steps for exterior paint removal and preparation:
1. Pressure wash the exterior to remove dirt, mold and pollutants. During this process you will also remove loose paint.
2. Scrape and pound in loose nails. We prefer a replaceable carbide blade with a handle for pounding loose nails.
3. Sand the surface to remove dead wood and feather out old paint.
4. Blow off the surface to remove dust.
5. Caulk expansion joints, making sure to wait the required dry time before priming.
6. Mask the windows, lights, etc.
7. Prime where needed. In our case we used peel bond primer.
8. Top coat. In our case we used Duration.

Almost 10 years old and still one of the best videos on this subject that I found on RUclips - thanks.
Been searching and watching then searching and this video is no BS right to the point w/ product and tool info. Wish I found this an hour ago. Now I can share with my boys to see what type of work we'll be doing this spring. Excellent video. Thanks so much.
I’m painting my house for the first time. I never heard of peel bond so your video was very helpful.
Great video. Do It Yourself (DIY) is fraught with fear and insecurity when you take on a task that you have never done before. Videos such as this one helps to quiet the fear and uncertainty in a DIY project.
Very clear presentation with just the right amount of detail. Glad to see you recommend actual product names so's I know what to buy.
Best house paint video. Thank you!
Well done. This was exactly the information I was looking for. Clearly communicated. I have been having a difficult time finding a product like Peel Bond.
Great video. Time for the good apples to stand up & make the bad apples look for what they are. Thank God for RUclips and those who work with integrity.
Make more videos with great tips guys.
Thanks for this video. It was very helpful.
Hello! Just curious what Grit of sandpaper you have on your Disc Sander? thanks!
He is using a disk made for metal grinding. Comparable sand paper grit roughly 40-60 grit. If you sand wood siding with higher you will remove the wood grain.
We need more workers like you in America. Most cut corners
Quality takes time, and time is money. Words most normal wage earning people don't wanna hear.
thats cause people dont wish to pay the premium it cost to do work like this.
i lose alot of work because I wont work for $1 sq foot for anything especially on the north east coast
Most? I bet you're a pain in the ass to work for
Lots of great tips! Like feathering w 7"sanding pad. Thank you!
5" disc sander with a 7" resin sanding disc was the perfect tool to prep my old siding. For the 7" resin discs, the hercules brand at HF where better and cheaper than the diablo brand.
Fantastic prep work. You guys did a really good job painting too.
Preparation takes time and doing what you did is perfect. Remember painting should take time too. Brush and roll is the way to do it for residential. You get more paint on the surface then spraying therefore will last longer.
I'm sticking to Walmart brand paint it's cheap and I can charge the homeowner 1000s more than your average Joe been painting 50years and I'm still going strong thank you Philippines
I always seal or prime before caulking to seal the surface. Caulk will shrink and not bond well to an unprimed or painted surface.
what grit sandpaper do you use?
thanks for the video mate, looking to do a DIY job on my own place, and this is a great quick breakdown. cheers
Really nice job. However, I've used Duration by Sherwin Williams and I find it fades badly in the sun and simply can't handle salt air. I've since switched to using either Old Village or Behr Ultra and have had vastly superior results here in New England on the coast where paint takes a beating year round. I can only imagine it would last that much longer in less harsh conditions. I don't typically like to rag on a product but after many fails by duration I rate it as junk paint at best.
I've been so stoked on Behr Ultra the last 3 years . The duration is nice and thick but a waste of money
Your content is superb. Especially checking with the manufacturer
Have you used a paint eater at all? I see a fair amount of guys in my area using them. Just curious on your feedback.
Thank you for this video. I recently moved to CO from MN and purchased a home with wood siding that was badly weathered and needed painting and repair. The company did a terrible job and is trying to tell me it's as good as it gets. It's unacceptable and not an outcome they shared at onset. I wanted to see if better was possible and you helped me to see it was. If I was still in MN I would be a customer. Thanks!

You read my mind. Yesterday I was asked to prep wood slates with a 4 inch orbital sander. Took forever and it was impossible to make the pint chip notch vanish or be sure that all the loose paint was removed.
You are very good .
This is now 9 years old. I never heard of the primer that fills in/smooths the surface. I certainly wish I knew this before painting my house, and fence.
Great finish work!
Excellent, clear and concise video. Thanks for making this Video 👍
Question : I want to remove the ingrained paint (take it back to original wood) from my wood beams that surround the exterior of my car port & porch.
You mentioned the primer goes on milky but dries clear. Remembering I want to show original beams..Can I use the Prime RX to seal my beam and keep bugs from entering grain? FYI - Weather - I’m 👍in hot Sunny Florida! Ty
Was looking for deck restoration/ strip down tips and found one in that SW primer. Other comments mention how people don't want to pay for top notch work... NOT the case HERE ! I can not find anyone who wants to do anything labor intensive, be it the bums who cut my lawn that won't get off the machine to move a dog toy and will shred it or cut around ! OR a painter who claims a pressure wash and scrape is all I need and charge $1200 for a ground level 12 x 28 ' with no rails, just a 28' bench with no back, ONE coat sprayed ! No twisted or rotted boards, no complications just drunks or recovering addicts that want to spray easy condo's and newer construction. I'm a 58 yr old disabled and retired firefighter/ medic who worked construction since age 14 and 80+ hrs a week for 25 yrs and know nothing BUT physical labor and will pay extra for a skilled contractor who cares about his workmanship...GOOD LUCK FINDING ANYONE here in the working class areas of Ct. ! Don't know wtf happened but it's sad
Any suggestions for stripping peeling latex other than breaking my already ruined back/ hips with a belt or disk sander ?
Thank you for sharing great information.
A good painter knows the preparation is the key to a good paint job. Good video. There was no rusted nail heads in your demonstration but had that been covered in the siding preparation the customer should be told that there is no paint product that can stop rust. Take off the rusted nail head with the drill bit from Nail Head Gone and replace with a stainless nail or screw if necessary.
50,000 nail heads? Get serious. There are other ways.
@@paulh7589 Yeah, I just put in new nails next to the old ones if necessary.
Thanks for the advice.
Super helpful thank you!
Hi, what do you use as wood filler when painting outside wood?
Which pile roller did you use?
I always caulk after the prime
Excellent explanation. Thank you
thanks for the tip about the lead!
Just wondering, what areas you would Caulk for a project like this?
Thank you!
wish I knew of an example of the 7" disks that you use. All I find have a 7/8 arbor hole and that is not easily used with the 1/2" arbor this sander is populated with.
Hi what makita drill are you using?
What color is the paint you used? I really like it and want to paint my garage this color! 😀
Very good vid. It would have been helpful to see a before and after pic taken from a little farther away from the house for perspective. Thanks.
I’m buying an old farmhouse. I have my work cut out for me. Thank you for this.
Nice work!
Great Video!!
thanks
a very good video, thanks be to God and thank you. I have questions regarding the last few minutes of your commenting: 'we only had a couple layers of paint previously applied so the surface leveled out really well, results will vary depending on the thickness and buildup of previously applied paint': I dont understand this part: can you help? thank you in advance and God blesses you and people around you abundantly with Himself!
So many painters have been adamant about NOT using latex primers and that using slow-drying oil-based primers is a must. What's your advice?
Does Peel Bond work on Ceder?
I have a garage with dutchlap siding I painted twice but it keeps chipping now it needs sanding I tried 7" polisher but now I can't find the 7" stick on sheets . all the sanders are small and they are for detaild hobs . what kind of sander did you use for this job and whrer can I buy it . thank you.
I'd like to know, too. Did you ever find out?
Great Video!!
What grit sandpaper for THX cedar siding
What’s up with the short pressure washer handle and what type of tip you using? I am new to the painting business, having a little trouble estimating exterior paint jobs. Any tips with coming up with an accurate estimate would be greatly appreciated from one painter to another?!?!? 😀👍🏻
some good points,,, thanks
Excellent tips thanks, subbed!
Great Job.
Thank you
Care to share the grit of sandpaper
I want to paint my house but it is very tall and big. It looks awful but I’m so overwhelmed. I don’t know what to do.
My mom's house is peeling pretty badly. I have the option to use a powerwasher, but after doing my deck, and creating some divots and grooves, I'm thinking about buying an angle grinder with one of those nylon abrasive pads. Did you guys put down tarps? Thanks for the peel-bond tip.
Hi how many top coats di you use? What do you recommend for my wood siding?
thanks for the video - does it not seem like overkill to use peel bond on entire house? Perhaps the siding was peeling more than my house where a quote I received said it would only be used on window frames that are badly peeling. This stuff is the bomb though according to all the vids and talk on the interwebs.
Do you do the same with x90 siding.Do you have to get all the oil based paint of before priming and can you use exterior paint with primer
my question in the video the siding has lots of unevenness in the grains , due to age and unfavorable weather conditions, how much of this can be evened out to obtain a smooth surface without the imperfections in the grain , otherwise to me it looks like the siding was never repaired
Do you have to use peel seal on whole house or just areas you have sande
Very good video
The house we are buying has quite a bit of peeling paint. Do I need to sand down to the original wood? Or do I just need to get the peeling parts off before priming?
What pressure washer tip where you sing ??
Did you go over the area with a tac cloth before primer , or could you have skipped the primer all togather?
Do you have to prime the entire wall or only chipped areas?
Is that the makita gv5000? I have one...it has a black pad with it...ru saying just get some 7 inch sandpaper to remove flaking wood from my tongue and groove..do u know of a clean-strip pad for the makita that works?
Is there a dust shroud you recommend? And does it work? I have the GV5000 and have a tongue and Groove wood house w/lead. I already have the HEPA vacuum from a previous part of the house(I used a paint shaver before but this part of the house is not that bad)...also trying out both Peel Bond and Peel Stop to see which works better. Also I was testing some MH ready patch for the peeled areas of paint, but if the peel bond fills then I will back of that..just testing one area for now...
can you use a sprayer with the Sherwin Williams paint?
When you are sanding and scraping non-lead based paint, is it bad if the paint chips get on the ground or should you put down some kind of cloth to catch them?
I am sanding/scraping a house with multiple coats of paint, lots of cracking and flaking. The wood is the house's original . It is cedar wood, very dry and quite warped in spots. I have managed to scrape off a good deal of the paint, but am resorting to simply sanding down the remaining paint I cannot budge. Is this going to seriously affect the new coats of paint?
Did you ever get an answer? I'm pretty much dealing with the same thing.
Have you ever painted a like color over brown? Wondering if the brown shows through even after the sanding and prep.
hey if the wood siding has tanin bleeding in some spots, would you recommend oil based primer instead of peel bond?
Thank You!
Would love to see a video on a siding where there is tongue-and-groove and varnished wood, not painted or stain
Would you use that primer on a deck surface?
I probably wouldn’t but I probably would use a stain not requiring a primer
Where do I buy this sander?
www.amazon.com/Makita-GV5010-5-Disc-Sander/dp/B000GAUXWE/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=makita+disc+sander&qid=1610115785&sr=8-1
Did you lightly sand again before top coat? I want high longlasting colour shine. Oil based gloss or enamel ?
Can you just use paint with primer in it instead of using the peel bond primer?
pretty much always a bad idea to do that- using the "primer paint" when there's a bare wood or drywall surface, that needs primer 1st. don't skip actual primer! you'll be glad you did the proper job, instead of problems with it peeling easier etc. The primer paint is really just better covering, not actually for primer
@@mcsqueegee81 I wasn't painting bare wood. I repainted the wood trim on my house. I did do two coats of peel bond, followed by two coats of paint. FIVE YEARS LATER, the paint still looks fresh.
Can I use the disc sander in this video for paint removal on lightly textured engineered wood siding? What grit would I use?
maybe maybe a wagner paint eater...but even that may be too aggressive. I try not to sand those products and just scrape and peel bond
Good info
Does this primer work on log siding as well?
problem in my area is rusting nails. after 2 years or so, the nail head rust starts bleeding through. some use a zinc spray and some touch up before with oil based paint. none seem that effective. your solution???
💥 Great video thank you. 0:35 what model is that sander.?? 🤟🏼
what kind of sander is best for 3 step facia? it is so tough to get it sanded and smooth on the face and underneath. u got any tips?
I’m not sure if this was asked already but what’s the PSI of the pressure washer?
Thank you, I must paint my house, but first sand chipping paint, I will try your method, thank u
I see that this video is pretty old. I was curious about the color of Duration paint used on this house as I was planning to paint my own home a color like this. If anyone knows please share. Thanks
Excellent question, hopefully the author will follow up with another video or comment.
Hi, which number of sanding disc shoud I use?
Did you ever find out what number
Nice job guys, very useful.
As I need to prepare for painting a house just like this one, I am wondering what would be the result if I use ONLY a pressure washing (without sand mixed, just water) instead?
The sanding by hand works great but it's a hard work for large areas to cover. Pressure washing must have be way more efficient method. Just wondering what the surface would be like, after the boards are dried out. Would it be ready for painting straight away or still need to scrap/sand or do something else?
Pressure washing IS just water, sand blasting is a completely different process, mainly used on steel/metal.
So many people are just lazy these days. Want shortcuts for every thing.
I am 68 yo, pressure washed, scraped and sanding down flaky weatherboards now, half the big ol' house is done.
He showed you what is required, there is no easy way, just do it.
What brand of Scraper & Sander did you use? Also what grit of Sand Disc was used?
Can this be done in winter months? Maybe if its above freezing?
It seems like all the pros are using Sherwin Williams. Does anybody know what their fascination with it is?
If the paint isn't so damaged is primer necessary?
Nice job!Thanks
