- Our first live in-person podcast with 8 Prog Report members trying to rank the albums that feature both Neal Morse & Mike Portnoy (Neal Morse solo, NMB, Transatlantic, and Flying Colors). Of course, these albums also include the incredible talents of all of those band members, so apologies for not mentioning Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas, Steve Morse, Casey McPherson, Dave LaRue, Eric Gillette, Bill Hubauer, and Randy George.

I'm 57 years old and rarely get shocked, the last time was when someone said they preferred Derek to Jordan in dream theater, putting INNOCENCE AND DANGER in d for me is one of the biggest shocks I've ever heard, not only do I think its Neal's best album, its actually my favourite prog album of all time, the album has got EVERYTHING you could want in a prog album. ❤❤❤❤❤
Totally agree. It's probably my most listened album of all time. Couldn't get enough of this for a solid year at least. I saw them live playing it through as well. 10/10. S-tier easily.
totally agree... that album is among 20 albums of all time on mine list of the best albums....
Jordan is annoying. Kevin was a thousand times more interesting musically
150% agree, innocence and danger is A tier, B pushing ! D???? Are they nuts? Lol
I love this format!! Can't wait for the next episode!
Best thing about this video, for me, is it gave me a huuugggee playlist for the next 3(00) days! Prog on!
I love around 45 minutes the claws start coming out, haha! What a trip this was.
Ha indeed.
Loved this episode !
The Whirlwind number 1, then whatever you want
Best podcast so far!!
I will make my own tier list and share it, but I need to give a few of them a relisten before giving the score
Wow. That's high praise. Thanks for watching!
Bridge Across Forever is my favorite of all these albums. Great episode.
Some of think so too. Thanks!
Sorry for bumping it down 😅
@@RayofLightFilms Rios was ready to ruin your viewing experience. ;)
You should only be able to bump your own choices not other people's.
Make no sense that someone can rank something as S tier last and it is 'safe' but put it there early and everyone else can demote it.
Thanks for ranking the tiers, guys! That makes it more precise. I love how these rankings inspire me to go back and re-listen to this fantastic music! Gotta say that my bottom tier would be all the Flying Colors (not proggy enough) + Momentum. Also, Bridge and SMPTe beat out Whirlwind for me. Shocked to see "?" in S, but that is where I would put it, too! Super throughout and Hackett's solo is breathtaking!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That solo - chills every freaking time
Love this format. Inspired me to go down all the Morsefest wormhole again. I was watching Testimony of a Dream and saw some fellas who looked a lot like you guys dancing around in tee front row lol.
Anyhow my take I adnt listed to TSOAD on a while and boy its tremendous. However I also love TGA (Has some of the best high spots of any project). Id likely have both in S. Would make a great quadruple album.
Probably a spoiler because I’m likely to do my own video ranking one day…but my tiers would probably look like:
S Tier: Bridge Across Forever, Similitude of a Dream, The Whirlwind, One
A Tier: Sola Scriptura, ?, Testimony, Testimony 2
B Tier: The Great Adventure, The Absolute Universe, 3rd Degree, The Grand Experiment
C Tier: Second Nature, Innocence and Danger, SMPT:e, Flying Colors
D Tier: Momentum, Kaleidoscope, Lifeline, Sola Gratia
But in reality, in comparison to my whole record collection, they are all S/A tier albums 😊
Solid list 👍
Wheel of Prog is so fun to watch! Keep up!
But guys...... watching bump "Bridge Across Forvever" from S to A was just plain ridiculous. How could you leave it like that??? A stab in the heart...
This was chaotic fun! I can't pretend to know all 20 albums inside and out. However, I'll say the two albums that rate much higher for me are Innocence & Danger and The Absolute Universe. I really like the Great Adventure more as well.
Hilarious show.
Thanks!
It was so fun to film! I hope that comes through.
@@KyleFagala for sure!
Thanks!!
It's all subjective of course, but I was surprised to see you guys put One so high. My ranking would be:
S = Sola Scriptura, ? , Whirlwind, Similitude
A = SMPTe, Bridge Across Forever, Flying Colors, Grand Experiment
B = Testimony 2, Innocence and Danger, Absolute Universe, Great Adventure
C = One, Testimony, Sola Gratia, Second Nature
D = Kaleidoscope, Third Degree, Momentum, Lifeline
One is the best NM solo album imho. Nice rank list, though.
Awesome, really enjoyed that, thank you.
Here's my ranking:
S: One, Sola Scriptura, Whirlwind, Bridge Across Forever
A: Similitude, T2, Lifeline, Question
B: SMPTe, Momentum, Grand Experiment, FC2
C: T1, FC1, FC3, Kaleidoscope
D: I&D, TAV, Sola Gratia, Great Adventure
The other wheels of prog I"ve pretty much agreed with but putting One and ? in S tier and 3rd Degree in D tier has me rethinking my relationship with this channel and website. WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!!
Honestly though the comment at the end about that D tier being many artists' A-tier is absolutely right. Partly because Neal is amazing and partly because you guys got it wrong ;-) But the Neal tiers really should have been S, A+, A, B+, and B.
My tier list (organized by preference within the tiers):
S Tier: Similtude, Sola Scriptura, Bridge Across Forever, Whirlwind
A+ Tier: Great Adventure, Kaleidoscope, 3rd Degree, Momentum,
A Tier: Grand Experiment, TAV, 2nd Nature, SMPTe
B+ Tier: Testimony 2, Lifeline, ?, Innocence & Danger
B Tier: One, Testimony, Sola Gratia, Flying Colors
All Flying Colors B Tier and higher.
• Second Nature - S
• Self Titled - A
• Third Degree - B
I have spoken.
Sola Gratia rated as a D? Ouch! One of my favorites. Love the video and conversation. 😊
Fun episode, although my personal list would be very different!
27:11 - Totally agree about Flying Colors (self-titled) sound. WHERE oh *where* can one get "True Colours"??? If only it was on Bandcamp, but I cannot source it anywhere. Seems not to be on Neal's site, either... :((
Please do Zappa (living discography only) or Jethro Tull! 👍 Good video and effort!
Great suggestion!
Not surprisingly, I agree with Kyle F. on mostly everything ;) I have to say ? for me would be no where near S tier, maybe C at best. Otherwise, I'd put Absolute Universe and TGA at A and the rest are pretty close.
I think we've talked about it before, but I've never viewed ? in the same light as most others. I'm a little lower on TGA than most, and we're gonna have to agree to disagree on TAU. :p But, I appreciate the support! I can always count on you, Adam!
If ? wasn't S-Tier we were going to have a problem
Thank you! Definitely deserving of its S tier status.
I have so much discovering to do. Having only heard Bridge, Flying 1 and 2 and Scriptura.
So based on the results of this ranking I haven't heard an S tier album yet.
Having seen the DT and Opeth episodes I tend to agree with Kyle and/or Daniel for the most part.
Kyle also makes me laugh 36:07
Thanks so much for this episode. Cheers!
Awesome!!!!!!!
On my top tier:
Sola Scriptura
Question Mark
The Whirlwind
Bridge Across Forever
The Absolute Universe
Similitude Of A Dream
That’s a lot of perfection.
Morse/Portnoy = The Best Prog Duo Ever!!!!
Does this move us up to #5?
Aaaah but … @theprogcorner… S tier is 4 albums, not 6 - so you have to narrow it down!!!
@@progreportNo doubt!!! Redemption!!!!!!
Great fun - thank you. Putting I & D in D tier is blasphemy but you didn't ask my opinion lol. Neal's bands are my most listened to music for the last 7 or 8 years; I am continually surprised how well people love Whirlwind. I like Kaleidoscope better - I think Into the Blue is maybe my favorite song ever. My S Tier would be Similitude, One, Bridge; and can't decide.
Loved it. The Absolute Universe deserved way better but that is the way it goes.
Hahahaha, best tier list ever 😂😂😂 do something like this in recent Future Please ❤
Thanks. We had a blast. Hopefully we can do it in person again in the near future.
@@progreport generally so far I love this formula of Wheel of Prog - I watched every single one and this is super fun to hearing your different opinions on a certain albums, when basically every single one of you is an expert...But the taste is a tiny bit different 😜 love this 🔥
S- One, Similitude, Sola Scriptura
A- Grand Experiment, Innocence and Danger, Kaleidoscope, Whirlwind
B- ?, Second Nature, Testimony 2, Third Degree
C- Absolute Universe, Flying Colors, Momentum, SMPT
D- Great Adventure, Lifeline, Sola Gratia, Testimony 1
Any chance of doing Fates Warning? Great, great discography!
Likely to happen
All bloody genius.
My biggest beef with this is how low innocence and danger is
"One's C rank is another's S" 😂
Good video, thanks ! But where is Transatlantic's The Absolute Universe ? 😲
It’s there!
Absolutely, I must be blind 😵
similitude number 1, always
C for me, never clicked for me, Great Adventure I like more 🫣
@@erikleenhouts834 if you like heavier prog then GA will appeal more
So glad about the worldwind. Sea of tranquility hate that album
Thanks!
What??? Lifeline is amazing!!!
Great guys, thank you soooo much, I enjoyed this 😅❤.
All Flying Colours in D for me, Question in B and Great Adventure in S. 😊
Thanks for watching
I would appreciate some audio compression in this video
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Being almost totally to Neal Morse, I though Dan said “the anus is in danger” for a sec 😂 4:06
I'm quite fine with this ranking, except for the Flying Colors debut album. For me it's at least A. But I'm so happy to see Question from Neal at S. I'm tired of hearing people whine about that album. I just happen to enjoy it so much. Ofc nothing can beat Whirlwind. When I heard it for the first time, I was stunned, the same way as with hearing the Duel With the Devil, but 5 times more.
Bridge Across Forever is a class above S-Tier
Agree with most! Particularly that Absolute Universe is TA's worst album. Definitely a D tier for me.
And also I agree with Kyle F - Third Degree just didn't click for me. Certainly a good album but doesn't come near the debut.
Kyle was wrong 🤣
🫡
Spock’s Beard
It has to happen eventually... Right?!
Oh this is easy. About 19 of them are in S tier.
If only it were that easy! Haha
Are you Prog Nick?
If Similitude is S, then Adventure has to be A Tier. I mean S and A... makes sense, right? 😇 First I thought Innocence in D is too low, but there are a lot of great albums here so... maybe we can say that D tier is 9 from 10 and S is 11 from 10 then maybe. :)
Maby Katatonia for a spin?
innocence and danger in D???
Shocking right?!
@@progreport absolutely crazy to me. the 2 epics are immense, and the shorter songs
@@progreport for me it is at least B, but this is the way the the mighty "WHEEL OF PROG" works I guess 😄 still amazing time watching this 😆😆😆
You got to get pete pardo from sea of tranquility to play this.
There was *no need* for that Rock Paper Scissors game. This isn't a Pattern-Seeking Animals ranking. 😋
😂
Absolute crime that Third Degree is D. 😢
You’re not the only one who feels that way. 😂 I’m curious what your D Tier would be?
@@KyleFagalaThere are 5 that I have not listened to either because I didn’t buy them or they are not available on the streaming services I subscribe to. So it’s hard for me to rank. I saw Flying Colors for the Third Degree tour so that is partly what makes it special for me. I didn’t connect well with the latest Transatlantic one(s).
I agree! Third degree is my favorite FC album.
Some people just want to see My New World burn
Ha. Nice!
How the hell is innocence and danger In D tier???? lol beyond the years is one of their best epics ever, bird on a wire, not afraid 1&2, bridge over troubled water, do it all again! Are u guys nuts lol that album should be above lifeline and momentum. At least b tier, and testimony should be A minimum. Question mark b or c, bridge S, great adventure A. This tier list hurt lol
Innocence and Danger 'D' tier. Good bye.
😂
What’s your D Tier?
anyone ranking Testimony as anything under A tier understands nothing about Neal's career and can't possibly be a true fan
The Dreamer is just another bible thumping jargon by Morse. Sad to lose that guy to the cross cult. It’s truly a damn shame.
Is there any need to be so rude about another person’s beliefs?
@@MrGnb123 not being rude about his beliefs. His beliefs are his business. I admire his musicianship but he comes off way too preachy lyrically. Progressive rock is the antithesis of Christian rock. Morse can be labeled as a traitor in this regard. That’s all I was trying to convey.
@@ruthlessdelinquentCalling someone a Bible thumper and a traitor is rude. Why should be not write about what he believes? Isn’t that what artists do?
@@MrGnb123 that ain’t prog rock, kid. May be Christian rock. No reason to be so butt hurt about it tho. You like it, that’s great! I don’t, and that’s my opinion.
@@ruthlessdelinquentI just don’t agree with your concept that prog rock can’t be about a certain subject / belief. Is it okay for Jon Anderson, Ian Anderson, Neil Peart, John Petrucci to write lyrics from their personal spiritual perspective, but not okay for a Christian to do the same?
