yeah, although the english dub is still somewhat trying to make him sound more like kratos; the cn voice is much more monkey-like. Wu Kong is a very jackey chan sort of action protagonist: his action has comedy in it, managing to be funny and cool at the same time which is a rare feat.

And to provide more context to the fight between Erlangshen and WuKong, the reason why he was able to best WuKong in the lore/books is because he has one more transformation ability than WuKong. WuKong has 72 transformation abilities (72 变) vs. Erlangshen 73 变.

Iirc, the crown was removed when they sucessfully retrive the Scriptures, but now it returned.

Depends which narration u are folllowing, in certain narration he lives peacefully after his adventure with tang seng. In some narrations, he tricked/killed tangseng into letting him by pass the gold band then went back to fighting the heavens then after he fcked up once again he willingly went on journey after tangseng was reborn. Its a 500y folklore there are too many narrations now.
this game is a goddamn masterpiece, expecially when you dig up the stories behind those monsters from the Journal in each chapter and connect them, such an intricate world and profound humanity.
To be fair, Wukong has always been portraited as having a high-pitch, obnoxious voice, to highlight his monkey traits. In the OG Journey to the West, Sun Wukong is a deeply flawed character, not meant to be flattering. I think the English VA did an ok job. I don't think chat would've enjoyed the Chinese VA either. There are a lot of western conventions that are simply not there in Chinese literatures.
Well the English dub is not bad at all!! As a Chinese who has been watching the full TV serie of Journey to the West 1986 when I was a little kid, I can definitely say that the Chinese dub sounds more like what Sun Wukong should sound. However the English dub sounds more bad ass indeed!
Grew up watching Journey to the West dubbed to Vietnamese so I don't really know what the Chinese version is like but I think the English voice actor got his arrogance voice down good enough.
i think the eng dub and sub are not bad at all. it retains almost most of the tonality and emotion. but like he said, i think we all should play in the language we want in order to understand what is a happening in the game. but i would recommend everyone to play it again with the original chinese audio, to fully experience the way the devs wants to convey.
Yeah of course, English dubs are always great because of the voice actors, who are mostly American, and America has the biggest and greatest acting industry ever especially because of Hollywood and the fact that we invented and revolutionized everything film and acting related.
@@ValCei this assumes that the Chinese voice over is the most optimal for conveying what the devs/author of this story intended, and that their intention of how they wanted him to sound like, portrays the most entertaining story for the audience. Which is just straight up wrong, other dubs and interpretations of the characters can always be better than the original, both for entertainment value to the story and for fitting the character/plot, which in most cases the English dub does way better than the "original" Japanese in Anime, especially in Anime with European settings and characters like Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga.

For example, the Jade Emperor was originally a mortal human called Zhang Bai Ren (literally Zhang Enduring Hundreds...), who had experienced 1,750 great catastrophies, each of which lasted 129,600 years, eventually he endured all of those hardships and practised Taoist self-cultivation and became the highest ruler of the heaven. Chinese Buddhism also had a system of Gods, who were integrated harmoniously into the ones from Taoism. In the integrated system, the Buddha is actually more powerful than the Jade Emperor, as Buddha is emptiness and emptiness is Buddha, it's a figure transcending existence and non-existence. In the beginning of the Journey To The West, Sun Wukong (the monkey king) wrecked a havoc to the heaven, leaving the Jade Emperor hiding in the corner asking his men to plead help from Buddha. Some intro, the Court means the Imperial Heavnly Court, kind of a goverment that tried to tie WoKong to their service, he finished the Journey to the West, and the Court still want him to do their bidding since his power is too strong to be left along. The guy with three eyes saved his mother with the axe he used by splitting over an mountain, and the dog is known to cause solar eclipse by swallowing the moon. But man I am telling you there is so much story behind this existing one, similar to Greek mythology, if you already know the back story the game is so much better.

Guys, for ppl who don't understand the context: the first scene you have played is the real wukong. (The one in novel "journey to the west" and he finally accomplish the task with his peers and became one of the Buddha) the background of this game is happening after that, wukong back to his mountain and for some reason, the world (the God court and Buddha world, as well as the human world) was controlled by the demon and most of gods and Buddha were demonized (you will see a lot of boss are demonized Buddha and god). The real wukong realized that and tried to figure out the reason and you see the first scene. And looks like he failed and dead. Then, the main character you are playing after is not wukong, it's a similar kind of intelligent monkey to the real wukong, and he's trying to figure out the real reason of this demonized world (same as real wukong). And you will fight 81 bosses in this new journey and at the end find out what's going on. Even me don't know what the real ending of this story is.

small lore recap here, Wukong ultimately lost to Erlang here because of the golden circlet/restraining headband that reappeared on his head. It was originally placed onto him by buddha to help keep him in check on the journey to the west where if he acted out or misbehaved the priest guy he was protecting could chant an incantation causing the headband to tighten causing wukong extreme pain. He ultimately did complete his duty and finished the journey so this all took place after that, he was granted enlightenment and buddhahood and the restraining headband removed. Strange how it materialized on his head now almost as if Buddha himself cast down divine intervention which allowed Erlang to strike him down.
Those five giants are the guardian deities in Buddhism, known as the "Four Heavenly Kings(四大金剛)," along with the largest one, which is likely "Acala(不動明王)," also known as the Immovable Wisdom King.

I really wish more people could understand the underlying philosophy through Chinese. It contains so many thought-provoking reflections. As someone who grew up watching Goku cartoons, I can even empathise with Goku. But the fact is the English translation and dubbing has been excellent. But there are still some differences from the actual default Chinese allegory. Also, does anyone actually know who Erlang Shen's axe belongs to (which is probably another story)?😂😂😂
I personally love how little this game explains itself. If you aren’t familiar with the source material and just take it in for what it is, it’s such a cool and unique experience. I miss that feeling from games, being dropped into some fantastical world and blindly learning/playing your way through it. This game does that in spades.

As a chinese, I can tell you that the Chinese voice dubbing is very similar to the voice dubbing of the Sun Wukong in the TV play Journey to the West that we watched as a children. So for anyone who doesn't know, the crown on his head is a gift Avalokitesvara gave to Tang Seng (Wukong's Master in Journey to the West) so he can control/punish Wukong if he's being disobedient (mostly to stop him from killing yaoguai without permission). Iirc, the crown was removed when they sucessfully retrive the Scriptures, but now it returned.

Depends which narration u are folllowing, in certain narration he lives peacefully after his adventure with tang seng. In some narrations, he tricked/killed tangseng into letting him by pass the gold band then went back to fighting the heavens then after he fcked up once again he willingly went on journey after tangseng was reborn. Its a 500y folklore there are too many narrations now.

To be fair, Wukong has always been portraited as having a high-pitch, obnoxious voice, to highlight his monkey traits. In the OG Journey to the West, Sun Wukong is a deeply flawed character, not meant to be flattering. I think the English VA did an ok job. I don't think chat would've enjoyed the Chinese VA either. There are a lot of western conventions that are simply not there in Chinese literatures.

I read journey to the west when I was younger and was blown away, im so glad that they made a game about this great story.
Well the English dub is not bad at all!! As a Chinese who has been watching the full TV serie of Journey to the West 1986 when I was a little kid, I can definitely say that the Chinese dub sounds more like what Sun Wukong should sound. However the English dub sounds more bad ass indeed!
I'm not a huge fan of the english dub myself, in my opinion both the dialogue and the voice acting is far superior in Chinese

Which is just straight up wrong, other dubs and interpretations of the characters can always be better than the original, both for entertainment value to the story and for fitting the character/plot, which in most cases the English dub does way better than the "original" Japanese in Anime, especially in Anime with European settings and characters like Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga.

But man I am telling you there is so much story behind this existing one, similar to Greek mythology, if you already know the back story the game is so much better.

Journey to the West is a mythical story that Mr. Toriyama is very fond of. I am very sad that Mr. Toriyama was not able to see this game released, otherwise he would definitely have drawn a comic to express his congratulations.
My partner is Chinese and seeing her get hyped from this intro and saying the Chinese names of the deities and the crown that sealed wukong with so much happiness like she was reliving a piece of her childhood was unreal. She was a bit disappointed the game deviated from the original story of journey to the west but it was nice anyways to know that a Chinese game company designed the game in a way that wasn't compromised by the west's brainwashed narratives. Guys, for ppl who don't understand the context: the first scene you have played is the real wukong. (The one in novel "journey to the west" and he finally accomplish the task with his peers and became one of the Buddha) the background of this game is happening after that, wukong back to his mountain and for some reason, the world (the God court and Buddha world, as well as the human world) was controlled by the demon and most of gods and Buddha were demonized (you will see a lot of boss are demonized Buddha and god). The real wukong realized that and tried to figure out the reason and you see the first scene. And looks like he failed and dead.
Then, the main character you are playing after is not wukong, it's a similar kind of intelligent monkey to the real wukong, and he's trying to figure out the real reason of this demonized world (same as real wukong). And you will fight 81 bosses in this new journey and at the end find out what's going on. Even me don't know what the real ending of this story is.

small lore recap here, Wukong ultimately lost to Erlang here because of the golden circlet/restraining headband that reappeared on his head. It was originally placed onto him by buddha to help keep him in check on the journey to the west where if he acted out or misbehaved the priest guy he was protecting could chant an incantation causing the headband to tighten causing wukong extreme pain. He ultimately did complete his duty and finished the journey so this all took place after that, he was granted enlightenment and buddhahood and the restraining headband removed. Strange how it materialized on his head now almost as if Buddha himself cast down divine intervention which allowed Erlang to strike him down.
Those five giants are the guardian deities in Buddhism, known as the "Four Heavenly Kings(四大金剛)," along with the largest one, which is likely "Acala(不動明王)," also known as the Immovable Wisdom King.

I really wish more people could understand the underlying philosophy through Chinese. It contains so many thought-provoking reflections. As someone who grew up watching Goku cartoons, I can even empathise with Goku. But the fact is the English translation and dubbing has been excellent. But there are still some differences from the actual default Chinese allegory. Also, does anyone actually know who Erlang Shen's axe belongs to (which is probably another story)?😂😂😂

The English version is ACTUALLY good
I personally love how little this game explains itself. If you aren’t familiar with the source material and just take it in for what it is, it’s such a cool and unique experience. I miss that feeling from games, being dropped into some fantastical world and blindly learning/playing your way through it. This game does that in spades.

3. Those soldiers are heavenly soldiers 天兵天将，total number of them is about a million.
4. Both Sun wukong and Yangjianhave masterd metamorphoses, but they have little difference, wukong knows 地煞72变 earth 72 metamorphoses, and Yang masters 天罡36变 heavenly 36 metamorphoses. Someone believe the heavenly one is better.

As a chinese, I can tell you that the Chinese voice dubbing is very similar to the voice dubbing of the Sun Wukong in the TV play Journey to the West that we watched as a children.
