Thank you so much I literally found a huge and I mean huge canvas on side of road and I said that's gold and just like u thought one person trash is the next person treasure I can't wait 💗
Susan, Thank you very much for this very informative tutorial. I've heard of people painting over there pours but never removing the paint like this. Tutorials such as this are an asset to RUclips and anyone learning to paint. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. It's greatly appreciated.
Instructional videos are the best. Thank you for doing this. For me though, no way in heck that I'd spend all that time and effort to save a $3 canvas. That was INTENSE! Great job at reclaiming that sucker!!
I can't thank you enough! I've been looking for how to do this for a huge, quality canvas given to me and the advice I found sounded horrible! Not only did you make it seem doable, but I've made note of the video # and will refer to it when the question comes up in my groups.
After watching your video yesterday, I decided to scraped 2 canvases that had been sitting for over a month and then I decided that I didn’t like the look of them. So I soaked them in hot water for 30 minutes, scraped off some of the paint, emptied out the now tepid water and refilled with hot water and soaked them for another 30-45min. My paint didn’t come off quite as easily as yours so I used a metal paint scraper to get the bulk of the paint off and then I used a BBQ wire brush on the more stubborn areas, using gentle pressure and a circular motion to get the lumps off. After sitting overnight, they are both still too wet to sand and Gesso - approx how long should you wait for the canvas to dry and to ReGesso your canvas before using again? Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks for us newbies
Thank you for this video, very helpful…..but I think I got a little to aggressive with mine! When I took the paint of the sides, it seems like it took the fabric of the canvas as well, leaving a raw plaster edge…….yikes! So this just happened, did not have any Gesso, so I am testing o spot with mod podge? Was that totally wrong, and should I go get some Gesso? It’s a 24” canvas, and I only took the sides off, the top is fine , the sides are 1 3/4” deep. I wish I would have never started taking that paint off, but it was so thick and uneven it looked really bad! Any help would be most appreciated!
Have tried removing the paint as you have suggested. Informatively, because my canvas was 40cm x 90cm it took longer to clean and I had to leave it in warm water for at least one hour thirty minutes. I would say this works for a) expensive canvases b) for ring pours and all kind of pours that we need to use thick paint or even glue with paint. Still thank you for suggesting it. Referring to your sisters’ (Shelly art) I would gladly take up the lessons but that will happen only when and if I eventually find floetrol being imported to Cyprus.
Fantastic video! I did this once before and probably didn't soak it long enough. I took every bit of the gesso off the entire canvas! ! Lol! I did not know about sanding it though! Thank you!! Next! Do you know how to get this paint off of CLOTHES after it dries?? That would be awesome!
So I made a mistake while painting a misty forest so all I did was add a white on everything but it ended up a mess so I have to redo everything, I wish I could have done this on a paper
Is that problem caused by the house paint? Is it worth the effort and time? Thank you! After seeing your effort, the canvas I would throw it away!!! 🤷♀️
Pay attention to the wooden part of your canvas..depends of course on the quality of the canvas but usually the wooden frame souldnt be under water. I guess all know how untreated wood and HOT water reacts.
I thought I will have to throw away canvases that I have ruined. Thank you for this tutorial. You’re a life saver.
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I would have never imagined that dry paint could be removed from a canvas.
Glad it was helpful!
I had no idea! I regularly remove paint from tiles but doing that with canvas is news to me. Thank you very much!
Thank You

It is pretty satisfying to watch you remove the skin
Haha, thanks

You seem so kind & I hope you're having a good day!
Thank you too!
Amazing! I never knew hot water alone would do the trick! 🙂
Right?!
Thank you! Ran into you first, and your info was perfect!
Awesome, thank you!
Wow. Thanks for the awesome money saving tip!!
Happy to help!
I have lots of canvases I can now save and reuse..Thanks for sharing

Perfect this is just what I needed
Great!
Erm, I only had to wait 5 minutes and I was able to peel it all off. Thanks for the tip!
You're welcome
Amazing tutorial! Thank you so much I will do this right now!😍
You’re welcome 😊
Great tips, didn’t know the skin can be removed like that!
Glad I could help!
Susan thank you so much for this video! You've helped me save some canvases that were headed to the trash.
You are so welcome!
I have never seen this! Great skins for covering things and making jewelry.
I'm glad you like it
Thank you soo much I messed up my canvas and I couldn’t remove the paint thank you sooo much!
You're welcome!!
Thank you for your great tutorial. First one worked a treat
Glad it helped
I was wondering how to do that!!! I had the chisel and hammer and other tools out! Lol Thank you so very much!
You're welcome!!
Brilliant video. Can I ask
- Does the timber frame ever warp.
- Why didn't you just pour over existing painting. Thank you.
This timber didn't warp. If its a cheap canvas it could warp. The paint was very thick so I wasn't sure how it would look if I poured over it.
Good idea.
Glad you think so!

Yes Gesso might help.
Thank you, I did that and also used Liqutex glass beads medium mixed with my paint, kind of tricky though!
This is an Awesome tip!! Thank You very much!!
Glad it was helpful!
Will this work if you have put a spray on top coat?
I don't know that, sorry.
OMG! What a life saver! So are you telling me with just hot h20 I can repair a canvas? Because I have several that need this!
Yes, it should work. It also depends what you used in you paint mixes. good luck
@@ArtbySusanKing thanks so much! Just the paint and floetrol!
Thank you for the great tips
You are so welcome!
Hey Susan, great video. Does this work even if it's a thin layer of paint on canvas?? Plz let me know 🙏
Thank You, Yes it does! It should work even better but don't leave it soak too long, keep an eye on it.
nice worked way better for you than it did me
Thanks

I don't have a sister named Shelee
The canvas drawing of yours was sooo good don't know why you would have got rid of that
Thanks
From my heart ♥️ Thank you for this wonderful video 👍.
Thanks, Glad you enjoyed it
Soo I’ve thought about doing something like this… but does soaking it warp the wood?
Only with cheap canvases
Hi thanx for the tip did you use vinigar in the hot water if so how much?
No I did not, it was to hold the canvas down in the water.
If you add some Murphy’s oil sop to the water it makes it even easier.
biner59 Interesting, Have you tried that?
Thank you so much but can you do wet paint if you still are doing paintings and stuff ?
If you don't want the painting you did and it's still wet you can just scrape it off.
Hello. Does this also work on dried acrylic? ❤️
It should
This is an amazing tip and it seems like a really easy way, but what if the paint on the canvas is a thin layer?
Then it should still come off. Thanks for watching
@@ArtbySusanKing thank you 😊
nice video, but is there any reason you cant just gesso over it and paint on it?
I have never tried to do that.
What varnish do you use; for that shiny finish??
Liquitex Gloss Varnish
@@ArtbySusanKing thanks for replying!!

Glad it helped! Ya I wish I knew that LOL
Quick question I put mod podge on my painting how do I get that off
I'm not too sure about that.
does this only work with acrylic pour or just any paint will do?
I think only acrylic pour.
@@ArtbySusanKing thank you
what do you do if you dont need to wet the whole canvas? just a certain section?
I'm not sure
How do you prevent the wood from swelling
Well It would if it's a cheaper canvas. A good quality one should be fine. Just don't let it soak too long.
So I made a mistake while painting a misty forest so all I did was add a white on everything but it ended up a mess so I have to redo everything, I wish I could have done this on a paper
Okay
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
How long do you soak the canvas for?
About half an hour
It is beautiful tho!
Could you have filled in the cracks with different colors or other mediums.??
Just my thot.
Okay
@@ArtbySusanKing Okay hasn't answered his question!
will it remove gouache?
I don't know, sorry.
@@ArtbySusanKing i poured hot water over the canvas and the paint came right off. ty anyways
great
can ı paint my ruined canvas white then use it?
Is there paint on it?
@@ArtbySusanKing yes
Yes you can paint over it
Does this affect the wood frame at all?
Probable on a cheap canvas but if it's good quality it should be fine.
How much hot should the water should be? Too hot, medium or little bit hot
Just medium hot
Is that problem caused by the house paint? Is it worth the effort and time? Thank you! After seeing your effort, the canvas I would throw it away!!! 🤷♀️
I was fixed with gesso, no problem, hardly any effort, I don't like throwing money away. thanks for watching
Pay attention to the wooden part of your canvas..depends of course on the quality of the canvas but usually the wooden frame souldnt be under water. I guess all know how untreated wood and HOT water reacts.
Great point!
Can you do this with acrylic paint pours that went wrong?
Yes you can
You don't need hot water.
Okay
est-ce que cette peau, on peut la récupérer pour faire des bijoux svp
Yes you can use the skin for that
Multiple thin coats are better than a thick coat ,painting 101 a customer will look at the back and if it not smooth they wont buy it
okay
If the art was nicer, you could have lacquered it, couldn't you? To save it?
I'm not sure
