I need more Blue Crabs to sell for Father's day so I'm going to the most isolated island in America to buy some! Smith Island is known as the crab capital of the world, hopefully they have some crabs they can sell me. I met up with my good buddy Jay Fleming and he showed me around the island. I met a lot of awesome people, hopefully they have stuff to sell me! Smith Island is an awesome fishing village in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, I highly recommend checking it out if you ever have the chance!

Your #1 fan is Captain Elmer W. Evans, known to everyone as Junior. He is 84 and is the oldest working Waterman on Smith Island to date. His boat is named the Miss Sherry”
He is currently at the Hope Lodge in Baltimore undergoing a medical procedure. He is doing very well and walks back-and-forth between the Hope Lodge and the hospital every day.
He will be there another week or so before he’s back home here on Smith Island.
Wishing him a speedy recovery and hope that he is back home soon. ❤
Hi there I don’t know if your dad’s the same person I knew years back. Did he ever come up the bay to Rock Hall in Sept-Oct for oyster season? I met a lot of Smith Islanders and one was named Juney. Such a nice man! I am still in contact with Chuck Marsh and Willard Marshall married a girl from rock hall i see him often
Wishing your dad a speedy recovery and hope he’s back home on the Island super soon.❤ to our old school lifelong waterman our rock and foundation
Buddy’s dad?
Wishing you both well from New Hampshire
There is a lot of respect in this video for the Dora Lynn boat from multiple people and a lot of respect for you turning it into a crab stand. You should be proud of that.
You gotta go back and interview your 84 year old fan. He's got more stories than Mother Goose.
frrrrr
Im from deal island ane my dads from crisfield and my grand parents are from both smith and tangier if you dont try smith island cake you aintt a crabber!!
My grandparents have a house on deal island!
They are there every single weekend
@michaelcarmine9923 what's there names do they live near the before or after the bridge?
Chrisfield use to shed a lot of soft shells and do a lot of picking.. not sure if they still do.. maybe try there too
@@anthony3603 they do and southern connection buys it all up
The self-depricating humor runs across all waterman cultures.
I come from a long line of Smith Island watermen and couldn’t be prouder. My grandmother told me stories of how she used to take a schoolboat back and forth to Crisfield to go to school. It really is like stepping back in time. My great uncles, Haynie and Newman Marshall were local celebrities. One time when I was 10 years old I snuck into the crab shanties and smashed about 20 crabs with a dip net. I thought I was gonna get banished!
I live on Smith Island and I used to love laughing with Haynie..I was born and raised in Ewell
It's nice to hear people/family's that have been watermen and crabbers for 60 years, genuinely like to watch Luke and enjoy and agree with most of everything he says. If the older generation like you or the way you do business you will go far. ❤
Thanks for saving my Aunt’s skiff! Glad you enjoyed the island and highlighted how hard it is for the working waterman.
What skiff was it
The skiff that was hung up under the dock.

Luke, your personality and your cleverly witted comments keeps me coming back. Good job!
All the respect to your impeccable planning!!
Forgot to mention the Smith Island Cake is the Official Maryland State Cake!
If you don't pick up the accent before you leave Smith Island, you ain't no crabber!!
Cattle electric fence from tractor supply would do the trick to keep racoons off the dock
Kind of illegal to run electric fence on a marina dock
Thank you for the tour of Smith Island. It was a great video.
I can totally relate to this video, Luke. I did nearly the same thing to Tangier island last summer. Took the ferry from Crisfield, rented a golf cart from the Air BnB and stayed 3 overnights on Tangier. I knew there would not be much to do on the island, but like you, I didn't care. I was just away from other people. The highlight for me was getting w/one of the local watermen who agreed to let me go crabbing with him and his crew on their boat. 3:30 AM wakeup call, at the dock by 4AM and onto the water pulling 400 traps. Was quite the experience.
Seems like John is a father figure for you. It’s great that you have him in your life. Love the video
I LOVE this change of pace video!
Getting the Dora Lynn history from the dudes who helped her in the past, worth ever second of the trip
Great video.Well worth the time spent there. My Uncle had a 50 ft boat built in the style of a SkipJack. He sailed the her until he no longer could. Her name was the Miss June named after his wife.He passed away in 2012 at 92 years old.
Luke I seriously have to say this but this has definitely been one of my most memorable trips ever and yes I’m serious about that!! It was definitely nice to hear all the locals stories of there’s over all the years that they have lived there!!! I definitely watched the entire video several different times and enjoyed every minute of it!! You definitely don’t see many people like you wanting to learn or hear how other people have done things for the past 50 to 80 even 100 years!! And I could only imagine how hard it can be to get things that might be needed by others that live on an island that is only accessible by boat!! Seriously just think about that!! My aunt and uncle lived in Michigan and had a big house boat on the Great Lakes!! I just wish I could have been a little older to remember what all they had to go through and do to be able to go out every day and fish for their food and all the other things that had to be done just to make things work!! I do no that my uncle was very smart!! I kinda remember that he would take the boat out every year during the winter and take it back to his big shop and basically tear it all down going through the engine every year and making sure it would be good to run the entire next season and with the way he had things set up and all the extra parts he was never waiting on parts to come in and he never had a break down his entire 80 to 85 years on the Great Lakes!!! What ever he did worked and he stuck with it year after year!!! My aunt passed away several years back but my uncle is still hanging in there!!!
Great to see the local lads in Crisfield out tooling around in their skiff....
Spent many summers doing the same!
great segment Luke. Thanks for taking us on a tour of Smith Island. I'm on the bay at Chesapeake Beach and used to slip my little 24 ft bayliner at Breezy Point. Never made it over to Smith Island. made it around poplar island, smith point light house, Tilghman Island and Choptank. Thanks for the trip.
As a resident of Maryland, I am truly amazed by the incredible diversity of this state. It is quite remarkable how well-known the boat you purchased is among the local fishermen, as it holds great significance to them.
Half the guys working tugs in NY harbor are from Crisfield or Tangier and Smith Island. Nice to see the places they talk about.
The black tip boat " I think there's fuel in it " had me legit laughing out loud. Good shit. Great vid
The view from that dormer window looked like a Bob Ross painting.
Great adventure/history video Luke. Thanks for taking us along.
"What are we going to do today brain" should be Luke's new intro to videos, because every upload is a new adveture.
But remember Pinky is in charge and Brain is his assistant.
Think about it the show is called "Pinky and the Brain"
Not the other way around. But i agree with your suggestion. 😂😂😂
This is the 2nd video about this island that the algorithm has suggested to me in the last couple days. May be a sign I gotta visit. It looks like such a peaceful community.
I am truly hooked on your videos Luke. Love your drive, determination and resilience. I look forward to watching every video.
Long…. and worth every minute watched. Thanks for sharing the journey!!
Great video! Thanks for taking us along Luke
This is amazing content. As an Ozarkian it great to see the similarities of culture. ALSO, everyone don't forget to comment and like the video, lets boost the numbers for our favorite crabber, otherwise you ain't no crabber !
Thanks, I didn't think I could watch for an hour+ but GOOD Stuff from Smith Island. Glenn
This is a fantastic video and story! It belongs on Smithsonian Channel as a documentary on Smith Island. You are a talented videographer. Thank you Luke.
Heck yes a long video from you.. I’ve been looking forward to watching this all afternoon! Good content man.
27:00 - the smile on your face while sleeping in a twin bed in an authentic house to the area…you love what you do and that’s awesome.
Great Video Luke… I watched every minute of it and very much enjoyed it!
Great video. I’ve never watched a YT video this long and I watch a ton of videos. Enjoyed every minute of it.
Great stuff Luke! Great to see your interaction with the people of Smith Island!
Exploring the house was so sick. Really the whole island. Thanks for the content man. This is awesome!
The part where he said Most of the residence stay for a long time had me rolling 😂
Hey Luke my family is from around saint Michael’s area they crabbed and farmed for over 100 years. The Hamilton family is still there . I enjoy your show ! Francis Hutson was my grandfather he was born 1906. Nick Hutson is my name . Take care !
Hey Luke, great video! I love the way you interact with the people you meet. Set up an electric fence. Just put chicken wire around it all and energize it with a fence charger at shore power pod on the dock. Then, just turn it off before walking down to check on your crab tanks. Problem solved.
Love this video! What a beautiful place you had the honor to visit!
Great video! Incredible adventure!
Excellent video Luke.
I thought I was the only one that had old Timers, story retelling skills, but these stories are awesome.
And talk about the history. Lots of knowledge.
These guys have seen it all
If you give up crabbin, you could do a history show of unique, abandoned and historic areas. You have a nice voice and seem genuinely interested and knowledgeable about what you are exploring.
That was an amazing video. Keep up the great work and I look forward to the next one.
Some awesome folks. Thanks for sharing. Us older folks enjoy your videos as well.
With out a dought this is your best video ever from you! Thank You. BTW saw your crab stand 3 weeks ago. Now your open. Great Job..... From Seattle just road tripping. Alan & Lori
We need a part two. It’s so cool hearing old stories
Fantastic video! I'm fortunate to have spent a little time on both Smith and Tangier. They are such wonderful folks! Thanks for bringing back a few good memories!
Killer vid Luke! Thanks for sharing.
great video! love the long vlog style, it was great to see a place so close to home that i have never been too.
This was a great video Luke , very informative and your humor is AWESOME. It's very sad what's happening on Smith Island, although the people for the most part seem happy ,but all good things must come to an end. I hope it turns around for you and them. Thanks for an AWESOME video bro can't wait for the next one.
Truly enjoyed this man, thanks for sharing!
LOVE this video! What a cool look at this unique and cool group of islands with great people.
Awesome video guys!!!! It looks so nice around there!!!! Have a great week.
Zot!!
You're pinky, John is the brain. Lol
Always wanted to go out there. Awesome place😎
Cool video man. I’m from Key West where my dad was a commercial fisherman. That reminded me of sitting around for story time with the old fisherman I grew up around
That was a great video. I'd watch more of your adventures on Smith Island.
I was just there for a feildtrip, I learned how to paint from a artist their! Also the house the boys were at was haunted by a 200 year old ghost... I slept in the room where they died...
I stayed on Smith Island in Tylerton with the CBF for a week, it is such a beautiful place to be. I loved every part of that trip and I would love to go back. Island Time is the best time.
What can I say but this video was freaking slick 😂 keep up the good work Luke 💪🏻🇺🇲
Luke, to keep raccoons out of your shedding tank, just put a radio out there and let it play music 24/7.
We do this to protect our garden and its eliminated our raccoon problem!
Luke I have been watching you since you started your Channel and I think this video here is my favorite of all that you have ever produced . It brought back so many memories for me that you cannot imagine . I spent quite a few days on Smithfield Island and Tangier Island over the years and I miss those days immensely. Thank you for bringing back on my Chesapeake memories.
Man I miss the Bay and the Eastern Shore so badly . Thank you, T
Mark AKA Schmoo is a fantastic guy, and I’m fortunate enough to call him family. My mother in laws parents still live on Ewell
This was another great interesting video ! An hour flew by so fast
Those houses that typically have lap siding ,and no eaves or overhangs are called cape cods because without eaves,or overhangs they're less susceptible to nor easter winds(aka hurricanes) catching the eaves and lifting the roofs off of the houses, and should be mandatory anywhere one can encounter hurricanes or nor easters...
In the deep south we prefer large, wider overhanging roofs for the shade, sunlight and heat blockage even though it makes the homes more susceptible to roof lifting during any wind driven inclement weathers...
I didn't think I would make it through an hour of this video but this is almost like a great documentary of southern MD. great job on this video!
Hello Luke happy Sunday you had a great trip out to the island with your friend but I cannot imagine you're not taking Lindsay out and staying in one of those houses for the weekend that would be a blast, you weren't kidding when you said crabs are hard to get
Great Trip Luke , Thanks for taking us along !!!🦀🦀
Hay Luke I have no clue about crabbing but I like watching your videos cause your a wealth of knowledge please keep up what your doing
That place is amazing. I have been to Crisfield to buy crab pots but never made it over to Smithfield. Thanks for the tour

Ayyyyyy, long format luke videos are my favorite
Great video. and all around good to watch
Video hasn’t even started yet and I already liked it and loved the video 😅
that was educational i enjoyed it !
This was awesome, i had a good time. It was very impressive how people have a lot of humility and they are so work driven by the desire of staying there. I truly believe some of us sometimes forget how good we have it. Thank you so much man.
Loved this video thank you so much from your fan from Rock Hall, MD
Top lad love it how people appreciate you and the channel too
I've never heard of Smith Island but it seems like a place I would love to visit one day! Thanks for the unofficial plug
Only half way into this video, wow, another great video Luke. 🤟🏻🇨🇦👍🏻
My dad tried to take the family to Smith Island once on his 17ft boat. Was a 65km trip and the outboard broke down(blown fuse or something). Got a 50km tow back to launch from a john boat and dad managed to fix it 5 minutes from dock. Heck of a day, I still would love to visit. Thanks for showing us this island and the people
I get excited for every video Luke! My brother lives about 15 min from the stand so I’ll surely be making it to you from NY someday !
Really enjoyed this.
What a great video. Lots of good souls there. I will agree with the young man who said you have alot of wisdom for your age , always listen to everyone who has something to say right or wrong it will bring you more knowledge which in turn will change into wisdom as you grow. With everything in life there are ups and downs , give it a month and you will be reaping the hard work you have put forth.. love the video and I bet their airbnbs will be booked up no problem now because of this video. Your business will now help theirs. Win win
"Shell" being on a sign from the county is hilarious
Outstanding Trip
