Father's Day is in only a couple of days, and if you didn't know, Father's Day is the biggest holiday for steamed crabs. Problem is that I haven't caught enough Blue Crabs. Well, 2 days later and I have plenty of crabs to sell at the crab stand Father's Day weekend! Thank you to all that came out this past weekend!

I am from the Netherlands and have worked in the fishing industry for 2.5 years and worked with North Sea crab for 2 years and have been sailing for a total of 10 years. If I could, I would sail with you without any problem. I like your mentality and approach to tackling, I think you are a cool guy.

Its a Mockingbird or a Cat bird. Both in the same family. Didn't get a real good look at it. They both throw their wings in the air to scare up bugs so they can eat em. Bring some raisins next time. They like them also. LOVE from Crabby Daddy here on the Patuxent
It looks like a Mockingbird. That truck is probably parked close to it's nest. That's why it's either feigning injury or displaying it's wings to ward people off.

there are these things that you can buy to put on those holes, they have a floating ball valve that lets water out and keeps it from coming in
maybe Seakeeper will help you out on the beam seas..you'll be the only crab boat on the CB..with one..
The bird is a Killdeer I believe. It’s likely has a nest nearby and is trying to distract you from the nest.
Is it possible to put a rubber flap on the outside of the holes that stops the water from coming in but allows the water to drain from the deck, sort of a one way valve to slow down the sinking of the boat 🤔🇸🇪

Such a sketchy issue to have! What if you have a stellar day, like the best of crabs ever and it’s right there over the edge of too much weight! Not good not good gotta find solution! Time is money!
I would plug those scuppers with wood and buy a cheap bilge pump. BUT if your bilge is full of water and water 6" on deck your gonna need a bigger pump.
It seems like you know a lot of local experienced fishermen in Maryland. Have you ever thought about creating a lobbying group to help push policies that will keep the bay clean and full of life. Give the bay some time to heal. Have the government subsidize your industry and pay you guys to clean up the bay. Reduce the amount of sea life that you can catch in a season. Give the population a boast.
I don’t know anything about crab boats , but you need to do something about Buoyancy . So that it is fool proof, can’t sink stuff. Like empty barrels or tons of styrofoam. You present condition you lose engine and your get a squall you go for a swim . Not good .
Luke you are a credit to your profession.. I am 78 years old and watch every episode. I helped a commercial crabber when I was young in Lake Pontchartrain when we used crab nets to catch them.. We would set out about 200 every morning and run them at least twice.. Used to sell nbr one males for around $6.00 a hamper..(wooden basket). Keep going enjoy your adventures

Re. Deck Flooding.. cut a hole in your deck at the low point, glue a bucket in the hole creating a sump, put an auto bilge pump in the bucket

Luke - Replace the wooden roof with an aluminum one to cut down on weight and then you can remove SOME of the roof stringers
(trusses) since the weight of the plywood won't be there. it should cut down on a lot of weight and prevent you from taking on water

I still look back on my field trip to Smith Island back in elementary school fondly and that was over forty years ago. These trips make memories for life for those kids.
I'm glad your friend can run tours for the school kids at no cost to the kid's parents. That's one of those memories that will last a lifetime. It's also a great way to show the kids that some food still needs to be harvested by hand. I wish we could have a program like that out here on the west coast but our guys harvest Dungeness crabs from the open ocean in some of the worst weather of the year. Not exactly a great school field trip.
Absolutely loved the Factor plug, heating the meal up on the engine manifold. It is too true. Did it for years in the Army. Any way to get a hot meal you will do it.

That spine is from lightning hitting in shallow water where fish was. I was fisherman and crabber from Delaware Bay for 30 years. Seen quite a few fish like that.
growing up in the 60s in NJ we used to go crabbing couple times a yr. It was in a big old wooden boat we had a few traps and a lot of drop lines. one time we were crabbing at 6 am and by 11 am we had 2.5 bushels. and they were all Males. Why do you keep Females? 1 female in 2 yrs can produce 3 Million crabs. of which 1% make it to full size 30,000. so every female crab you keep you're losing out on 10,000 crabs. It' like you kill the cow for a good steak, but wonder in the morning why there isn't any milk. doesn't sense to me. but i will say you do work hard

You should sell lemonade too, its actually very profitable.. 1 lemon makes a pretty big cup full, i have family that does carnivals, i deliver truck loads of lemons and limes..
U can easily charge $5 a cup for fresh squeezed lemonade

That bird is a "Killdear"... strangely...they lay their eggs and nest IN GRAVEL and sand! Their eggs totally blend in with where the nest is made. You need to comb the lot, locate the nest, and barricade it off, to allow the chicks to hatch and not get run over. They develop very quickly and they're cute as buttons with super long and fast legs!!!

I like that you want to give out free water. However, from a business prospective, your a new and up and coming business. I suggest charging 50. Cents. It will help off set the water and ice expence. Your customers will be understanding. That way u will not have to increase the crab price for small expenses. Thank you for sharing your passion and journey
