I didn't watch GX or 5Ds either but from other YugiTubers I've determined that Jaiden gets a depression arc and that Yusei's entire life is a depression arc. We were all blinded by card games on motorcycle and didn't realize we were getting a dark and gritty cyberpunk setting for YuGiOh.
You really should watch 5Ds. It has a more mature vibe to it that the previous series couldn’t reach. The motorcycles are distracting at first but it adds an intriguing element to the series once you get used to it. I was hesitant to watch it for years. But I actually think this is my favorite yugioh series now. And in a few more years I’ll probably try zexal!!
I disagree I think Darkside of dimensions is awesome and completely hit the mark one of my favorite Animated movies. He gave us a bunch of nostalgia and great animations for one of the best animated shows of all time.
I also see nothing appealing in Yusei as a character, in fact out of the eight Yu-Gi-Oh shows he's my least favourite protagonist, but 5Ds is still great despite him. He is all about helping other characters deal with their problems, like Luffy from One Piece but edgy, and despite me not finding his character arc compelling seeing him help others out of depression and hopelessness is immensely enjoyable, especially when he does that for the main villain of the series in the ending.
I respect your opinion on Dark Side of Dimensions and I can see where you're coming from but I have to disagree. Firstly, I don't think Atem returning ruins Duel Monsters ending at all because Yugi DID stand up and win himself..... against Kaiba. Every other time they've dueled he's always let Atem do all the work for him but now he's proven to himself and to Kaiba that he truly is the King of Games. The whole finale with Aigami was just to wrap up that whole sub plot which I will agree wasn't that interesting and I honestly think the movie probably would have been better without it. But Atem returning works because at no point does Yugi show any sign of discomfort or self doubt, he holds on to his confidence until he literally passes out, and when Atem does show up he simply draws, plays one monster, and ends the duel. If he'd taken over completely and it was more like the duel with Pegasus in Season 1 then I'd agree with you but as it stands Atem returning and sharing one final moment with Yugi feels like Yugi being rewarded for being willing to stand on his own two feet and fight his own duels. He's not being carried anymore he's just acknowledging another strong duelist. And besides that moment was just so hype, the music hits so hard as if the movie itself is celebrating Atems return. And the following moment with him and Yugi is just so beautiful, neither saying a word because neither needs to, and then Atem leaves. It struck the right balance between fan service and letting the story play out as it should. Yugi didn't need to do EVERYTHING himself in order to be the King of Games, he already proved that against Kaiba.
I get your point 100%, especially with how hype the music was for that moment, but personally if I was working with Takahashi on this movie, I would’ve argued as respectfully as I could against bringing in Atem. I would definitely say it’s more akin to Stone Cold popping up at Mania 38 than Ric Flair’s Last Match but then again, I would’ve probably argued against that too. Let the past be passed I say. That’s just me though, you’ve made an excellent argument to the contrary
@@WoodstockProd Very well then, agree to disagree. Btw, I'm really curious if you will eventually cover Arc V simply because of the fact that you're clearly a huge WWE fan and that show treats it's duels like wrestling slug matches. Just saying, the comparisons are ripe for the taking 😁
@@WoodstockProd It's my second favorite behind the original so I think you'll like it, well I've only seen the Japanese version, I saw one of my favorite scenes dubbed in English and it was so terrible that I refused to watch it dubbed. 12:39 i think you are forgetting that Yugi proves he can stand on his own. He beat kaiba, and kaiba was arguably at his peak. Sure, yugi cant overcome manifestations of pure evil. But i think its unfair to hold him to that standard
My argument for Yugi standing on his own against Diva isn’t Watsonian, it’s Doylist. I understand why Yugi needs Atem in that moment in the story, but I disagree with the writing decision to bring back Atem. I think it’s a stronger story decision to stand by Atem being gone forever. Atem’s story is done and bringing him back adds nothing to it. And Yugi proving not only can he stand against his opponents but against evil, proves that he’s ready to stand on his own without Atem.
@@WoodstockProd For that to have worked Diva would have had to not be there, but I guess that kind of speaks to the overall argument of Divas story being on of the weak links as it forced Atem to return. I personally loved the momentary return, but I will admit it was sheer fanservice. Like Vadar in rogue one. Unfortunately I absolutely love that form of fan service. Not too much, just enough.
@@kristienwhitney-johns5863 Yeah I think this story is just more interesting without this Diva character, and as far as fan service goes, hey to each their own! If you like it, that’s awesome! It is a cool moment, I just don’t like it as a story beat

Arc Cradle, the last undubbed 5Ds arc, is better than the first season, which had some great emotional duels but was too rushed in terms of the main plot.
You got the effect of blue eyes shining wrong. In the movie he can destroy himself and one other card not every card. Which I must say even back then that effect is garbage
I wouldn’t say the effect itself is inherently garbage, more along the lines of it’s a garbage effect for a monster like Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon to have. To get Shining out, you have to sacrifice one Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon you control - even ignoring the fact that Ultimate Dragon hadn’t been printed in the west yet - this is a ridiculously steep cost. As this means that, at a time in the card game, before you had the ability to search any Blue-Eyes White Dragon to your hand, you had to hard-draw all 3 (which is also the legal maximum you can have in your deck, so you can’t run extras to turbo it), AND you then needed polymerization, in hand, AND THEN, you presumably would be hoping you had tribute fodder for at least 1-2 of them - unless you’re keeping your opponent at bay without them, at which point, you’d probably be able to win before you could summon the thing, so you’d just be doing so for style points. You’d also be hoping that - if you did summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon or two - that you would have a Call Of The Haunted, or a Monster Reborn on hand, just in case one or two of them died. At the same time, you’d have to be praying that you didn’t draw Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon, until AFTER doing all this, as otherwise it is a completely dead card in your hand. Your reward for all this effort? An attack boost that probably gets it to 4800-5100ATK (it hits 4200 with just the cards required for its summon), and an effect that makes Shining Dragon kill itself and only one other card, for the steep 5 card cost you had to invest into cranking it out. It could’ve been the craziest boss monster in the game, and no one would’ve played it back then (again, even ignoring the fiasco of Ultimate Dragon not getting a TCG printing until 2006, and not getting a widespread printing until 2008), all because the investment really isn’t worth the pay off, or worth the hit to your deck’s consistency, just to crank it out. These aren’t bad effects for the era, but because the monster was so impossibly difficult to summon during this era, the pay off isn’t really worth it. Man-Eater bug had a similar flip-effect (though only applicable to monsters), at the same time. Plus we also had Dust Tornado and MST to deal with back-row, and Shining Dragon can still very easily die to Mirror Force. Counterpoint though: the card is awesome as hell, mad respect to anyone who does try to play it.
Fun fact: the bonds beyond time movie was confirmed canon by Yusei at the end of 5ds
Cool!
Which is why I kinda see Bonds Beyond Time more of a 5Ds movie than it is a DM movie.
