At NBAA 2018, I had a chance to check out Robinson’s Turbine powered R66 Helicopter. For those who are not familiar with Robinson as a company. This is one of the most recognized name brands in Rotorcraft or helicopters around the world.
The R66 model helicopter is built for utility. You have room for up to 4 passengers which means 5 people can fit in this spacious wide cabin (close to 60 inches). The R66 helicopter is also powered by a 300 HP RR300 Rolls Royce engine. This powers the aircraft to climb at over 1000 ft per minute and cruise north of 120 mph fully loaded.
The best part of the Robinson R66 is the amount of weight it can carry. Fill up the fuel tanks and you still have over 900 pounds of weight to carry people and luggage. Oh and the luggage area can carry up to 300 lbs. Price tag on the R66 Helicopter as shown in this video is $892,000
The ceiling mounted rotor brake is handy when you're shutting down and the blades are still spinning but drooped from low rpm. Keeps people from getting hit. Also handy at flight idle, loading and unloading passengers you want to stop that rotor. The 66 sits low like the 44, very little head clearance.
But.... the #1 Most Important use of the brake is on a turbine helo with the hot exhaust facing up at an angle (Lama,Allouette, 1HB, etc.) Always lock the blades away from the hot exhaust, otherwise the composite blade will melt. Once the turbine starts and up to temp, you're ready to roll, then release the brake and increase rpms, then you're fine, same on shutdown when you let the turbine cool a bit at flight idle before shutting down completely, lock that blade away from the exhaust. 👍👍
I've flown many hours on Soloy 47s and a few on R22.That offset cyclic takes a bit of getting used to,although it has it's advantages in simplicity. Thank you for giving us a "wee shuftie" as we say across the pond.
The brake is the Rotor brake, used to slow the blades down when shutting the helicopter down.
In these small helicopters, piston engines are pretty much just as reliable as turbine. The main advantage of turbines is the better power to weight ratio.
I don't usually look at helicopters but seeing as how Mojo is doing it then I will look thank you Mojo
John Yates iska price kitna hai bolo
I’m an electrical mechanic working on these R66 they are a nice machine.
This is beautiful
That pull brake you saw is a brake for the rotor blades so basically when you are done flying and shutting it off you can use the brake to stop the rotors. Obviously you won’t want to pull it when the rotors are spinning fast but when they are spinning slow or you are trying to stop the blades in a certain position you can pull that brake
I where are MOJO we miss you Man
Absolutely love the R66, so thank so much for putting this clip on. Please keep doing what you do on your channel as love your chilled but detailed approach to the aircraft you review. Warm regards from the cold UK. Peace bro!
Hahaha yeah I'm down to meet
Shall we do note that
Your videos (especially regarding the cheaper planes) are great bro. Fuelling a fire in me to get a pilots licence. Looking forward to the all electrics due to the running costs depreciation ✊🏽
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a trick to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Jake Salvador instablaster =)
@Maximiliano Easton i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Maximiliano Easton it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my account!
@Jake Salvador Glad I could help :)
5:23 that's the rotor brake.
Beautiful machine, thanks for the tour!!👍
the brake handle is to stop the rotor after having shutting down the turbine after landing.
LOVE
So nice
2:46 “you can fit people here” 😂😂
Yes
*Who else here to see the R66 before they get rich and buy it?*
Yesirrrrrrrrrrrrr
Let's do a meet up ten years from now and show off our babies😎

me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice colour
It’s the rotor brake. Helps stops the rotors quicker but personally I try to avoid using it so much.
very helpful is when shutting down in windy conditions. with out brake the rotor will keep turning.
Ya pasaron de moda esos modelos y muy altos los costos.
Kobe be looking at this like: ☠👄☠
Brake handle is for rotor brake
That brake is not a sky brake, its a Rotor brake. Pretty sure and for under a million that really HOT.
Very very nice
Very super and nice
900k???? holy cow!!
Dont know what you mean by this but thats actually pretty cheap. Fully loaded $1.1m. A few hundred thousand less than its competitors such as the bell 505 and the md500
@@LeBronJames-zd1zf md 500 ALL day long over a robinson
@@russellwood5867 yeah I agree. But it’s preference for some people I suppose.
Robinson would be a damn near perfect aircraft if they would just do something more to prevent or limit the possibility of the main rotor slicing off the tail when the pilot aggressively and/or suddenly commands too much forward cyclic (low g-pushovers). This has caused many Robinson crashes including the latest one in Rowlett, TX.
Excellent footage and love your channel name - I Subscribed 😎👍
Thank you Ed
I think they should change that two way connected stick to a two individual stick
Beautiful

I can't get used to having the cyclic in the middle. I remember back in the 50's the TV show "The Whirley Birds" they used an old bubble dome Bell.
I just believe the pilot needs to sit in the left side and the cyclic needs to be between the pilot's legs.
Heli pilots should always sit on the right. One hand stays on the cyclic and if needed left hand is free to work the instruments, radio....
@@smitty4321 I guess I got used to seeing pilots back in the days on the left side.
The boats I owned had the wheel on the right side with all the gauges and controls.
The cyclic is between the pilots legs, you don't hold the column that's in between the seats.
The cyclic comes up from between the seats, then there is a T bar on top of that goes across to the pilot with a hand grip on the end.
It feels just like a conventional cyclic stick and is very comfortable to use, you can rest your hand on your leg while holding the cyclic.
Vou comprar um
Very nice, thanks for sharing
Did you get a chance to see the new light Bell helicopter? If so, what are your thoughts in comparison to the R66?
I don't think I did. But I'm also not as well versed with Helicopters like I am with airplanes.
for how many hours an R66 turbine can fly??????
Tip; Buy a used EC120 Colibri ;)
Why?
How can i buy one
Nice
Cool video. Just get more of your info straight. Speak to a pilot that flys it to get some more accurate data.
Does it come with cup holders?
It's important than car's.
it is just one model below 3million 50 shades of grey helicopter(r88).
One day I will by it
How did they park it inside a shed??
Gotta be close to a $Million and a bit price tag,! Over here in Australia, maybe ?
Thanks so very much Sar 🥀🥀🥀🥀👏
Hi
Great job , excellent video(videos). The future has to be bright for you. best wishes.
Thank you George
So am I right to say this helicopter can only be flown from the right seat, I did not see floor pedals on the left side.
You can install controls on either or both sides
It depends on the manufacturer and model. However, Robinson helicopters are all flown in the right seat by the PIC (Pilot In Command). They are equipped with removable flight controls on the left seat for either a flight instructor who will teach the student pilot that occupies the PIC seat on the right, or another pilot that holds a rotorcraft rating. The reason why Robinson has the pilot occupy the right front seat is solely for the purposes of maintaining the aircraft within lateral CG limits. The main fuel tank is on the left side of the helicopter and carries more fuel (more weight) while the auxiliary fuel tank is on the right which carries less fuel (less weight). So this ultimately keeps the helicopter more level if the pilot were the only occupant in the helicopter. Otherwise the helicopter would "lean" to the left making it so the landing gear (skids) is not level, making the pickup and letdown more challenging and also increases the risk of dynamic rollover.
Cuanto el valor del R.66. helicopter
2:13 tell that to my buddy.. on a flight from Chico California in his r44, heading to Malibu California, he had an engine failure and had to auto rotate and Land on a random ranch over the tehachapi.
That's why he said turbines are much more reliable. Piston lycoming junk in the 44's are prone to self destruct under constant high rpm.
How much is the overhaul cost on this one?
That was the rotor brake
Where is the helicopter
Brake?
How about a rotor brake to help stop the rotor from spinning during engine shut down?
Upload the helicopter; s takeoff video quick
I don't know if 300 lb of marijuana would fit in that space though 🤣🤣🤣.

on/^\edi€ NO NEED ASK DENVER WASHINGTON AND CALIFORNIA
@@cassandrasmith3909 I'm a local Northern Californian. No need to ask. I was just stating the volume of 300 lb of cannabis is larger than the cargo hold of that aircraft.
What is the mileage per litter if 25 per litter then I will sell my Tata nano
how many times can you say " here " ?
That brake is your rotor brake
what is cheaper to fly? helicopter vs plane
How much worth.. That helicopter
i own this helicopter personally
Robinson R66 turbine helicopter
Very very expensive for 400 hours inspection (vibration engine check)
Não entendo porque a Robsob tem o acabamento do interior de seus helicópteros, tão simplorios e pobres, só em colocar um apoio decabeça nos bancos e um acabamentos nas portas e nas colunas internas da frente ja daria outra impressão e acabamento .
What does something like this cost? Very cool chopper though!
Price as shown is $892,000
What is the price
apologies for the redundant answer to Brake handle question
Cost pls
MUY BUENAS TARDES NECESITO UN ROBINSON PARA ECUADOR URGENTE PORFAVOR GRACIAS POR SU VALIOSA E IMPORTANTE ATENCIÓN SALUDOS CORDIALES QUITO ECUADOR
I need one
Why would it only have two rotar blades?
Because having one blade would look silly. 🙄
Lol i mean why doesnt it have 3 or 4 blades. Does it give it better performance
@@griffeyjr24
Like most things in aviation it often has a lot to do with cost.
Rotor blades and some rotor head parts have a set life and have to be replaced at a set interval, and two blades are much cheaper than 3 or 4.
A two blade rotor head is also cheaper to make, and also has the advantage of taking up less space in a hanger without the need to fold the blades.
Multi blades do offer a smoother ride, amongst other things, but in a small helicopter cost is often the bottom line.

About time!!!
Why would you say it fits five persons, when it clearly can only fit four.
Because they CAN seat 5 people.
put price and facts in next vedios.
Bangladesh will make this helicopter as soon
Where will the pilot sit🤦
