weesh theyre still worlds below a decent pair of speakers.
It‘s just that a lot of people buy soundbars because they sound „better“ (not hard if your TV sounds like shit) instead of getting some real speakers which sound even „betterer“.

Yes, moving it back would result in the same perceived surface area than a smaller monitor that lies closer BUT a shorter distance can also take a toll on your eyes, since you have to focus much closer. During long usage sessions it may help develop near sightedness.

I upgraded to a 40" 4K monitor a few weeks ago and it's great. I had been using 3 22" 1080p monitors on a desk mount for the last few years and this is way better. It takes up less space, gives me more screen area, multitasking is fantastic, and fullscreen content looks great.

  • @ergusto
    @ergusto 7 лет назад +6

As someone with a 40" 4k Monitor, it is honestly freaking awesome. It's like the difference between writing on a clipboard and writing on a large desk. There's just so much space. It makes multi tasking a completely different proposition. I'll often have a web browser, a text/code editor, a terminal and a video player open side by side. And not all tightly snug and fit together like in the video. Spread out around the screen it makes it feel like I have this giant, open space to work in. It really does illicit that experience of working on a large desk with multiple books and papers just randomly placed wherever seems convenient. It has done more to transform how I use my computer than any other technical innovation of the past 15 years. I doubt I will ever go back to a smaller screen for my main desktop.

Been using a 1080p 46" for 7 years... and love it. been thinking about getting a newer one (4k normal, 1080p gaming) and relocate the current one.
46" Full HD LED* TV with PVR and SRS Audio (100Hz Full HD Panel)
Inputs... Headphones, USB, HDMI, HDMI, Y, Pv, Pr, PC Audio, VGA. With a Remote and Picture in Picture, nice and simple but works for my setup.
Working on other peoples computers with tiny 24-30" does my head in now after getting used to it.

I think you missed a crucial feature of this monitor, the possibility of having 4 different devices connected at once without the bezel.
Sure this feature isn't that much of a deal for the regular user but for software developers having for example 3 computers with windows, linux and macOS + connecting his laptop or mobile phone to the extra screen and then having all those machines connected with a logitech keyboard switching machines easily or even using one of the products sponsoring you Synergy (you missed a shot here xd) to connect all the devices including the mobile one (android even though not officialy supported) is a big productive workflow.
But as you said some people will actually enjoy this for a monitor and some people will dislike it depending on their needs.

And for any reason an user want to have 4 monitores as one. As me, and why? just one example, gaming, for me, as I play FHD and love have other screens as support for streaming, having TS window open to watch it, or even have youtube playing at full screen while playing, or anything else than multiple screens can afford. And the best of all, you have the same color range for all screens, no more annoying different colors between screens. For me having 4 screens FHD isn't the same as one UHD resolution, for working. One thing you can't get is, having a full screen video using UHD, unless you turn off multi screen and use it as one screen.

Planning on buying the newer model (43UN700-TB) for Software Development too, precisely for displaying 2 code windows (bottom), 1 browser for the web app (top-right), and another window for googling or chat/e-mail (top-left). I can sit 2.5ft away from this monitor, do you think I would be able to use all 4 windows with minimal neck turns and head-zooming? For that workflow, I'm torn between LG 43UN700-B that now has HDR, and LG 34WN750 which is a 1440p ultrawide.

I've just bough this (a bit late to the game) because a certain virus outbreak has me working from home. It's brilliant for that. I installed PowerTools and used Fancy Zones to create 6 usable snap zones on my monitor to display several web pages or remote desktop sessions. I don't game, really, apart from Risk and the odd RPG so paying an extra £400-£1k for a similar sized high refresh panel was not worth it and my desk won't fit a Samsung 49" super ultrawide although that would have been awesome but also twice the price. The only gripe I have is the coil whine if I connect my laptop via USB C, but it's silent using displayport connectivity with my desktop.

One issue with this display is that the ~8 pixels on the left and right don't have backlight behind them. The backlight is kind of far back from the panel, and I have it as far back on my desk as I can, but at that distance the parallax leaves those pixels unlighted. I use it for terminal windows with small borders and it was cutting off the left letter. I found an unsupported mode in the i3 window manager that allowed me to effectively shrink the display size to eliminate those areas. I've had the display about 6 months now and really like it.

  • @randfee

as I have mentioned before: moving a larger screen back might give you the same viewing angle thus detail and size as a smaller screen with same pixel count BUT, it is easier on the eyes since your relaxed focal distance (of the eyes) is infinity and thus it is much more relaxing to look at something futher away!

Of all things you didn't dive into, you didn't bother to talk about the hardware split screen at all (besides the quick mention) which is the real selling point of this monitor. I'm a software engineer by day and a gamer by night and I currently have four 1080 monitors in a grid and it's a hassle to setup, move, and maintain. I've thought about switching to a 4k TV but because of input lag, response times, and the fact that a full 4k display right in your face is a bad idea- I've had no desire. However, this monitor checks all of my boxes because it isn't just a 4k display, it can be used in various configurations like 4x1080.
... And yet you didn't bother to talk about it. Just because it doesn't work for you and your video editing doesn't mean it doesn't have value outside of that. I have browsers, terminals, debug windows, discord/slack, sublime, etc running at all times on different displays when I'm working and just as much on my other displays whem I'm gaming.
I'm rather annoyed. I'm glad Kyle (Bitwit) talked about it (and gave some really great detail) - but I really wanted you guys to dive deep into the hardware split screen that the LG panel provides which gives the monitor value outside of being a glorified TV.

same thing i was thinking... i got 1 laptop that i use for work (coding and stuff), a surface pro, currently hooked up to a series 7 40" samsung, and - hopefully soon - a gaming rig for.. well, gaming and personal projects and even though i'm planning on setting up proper monitors for that, the option to get rid of the TV, get something like this for when I need to use all of the machines together (happens quite frequently) or just do proper window splitting would be nice.. heck: even have the ps4 on on a quarter and something like discord on pc on another one would be nice.

Philips has been selling the BDM4037UW and the Flat version of it for about a year now, I fail to see why this video pretends this is something new

    • @anthonymattera4556
      @anthonymattera4556 7 лет назад

That is because, unfortunately, Linus didn't go over what makes this better than the other split screen (PBP) display on the market (Such as the the Phillips BDM4037UW and the Dell P4317Q)
      1. Better Input Support
      2. Better Input Lag (Kyle talks about this)
      3. A Better Display Panel
      4. (And the most important) More modes than just 4k or 4x1080 (or strange modes like the Dell has)
Example: they have a mode where you can have two 1080 displays at the top and have 1 ultrawide 3840x1080 display at the bottom (or two ultrawides top and bottom). This is cool if I want to have a ultrawide display for gaming but still have 1080x4 for development, CAD/SolidWorks, Design/Modeling, etc.
You can see these examples on LGs website www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-43UD79-B-4k-uhd-led-monitor
I just wanted to see this in action. They have both a software and hardware mode for these split screen items and it would have been really cool to see this demoed. He just didn't bother because it doesn't fit his criteria of what he thinks a 'prosumer' is.

    • @Rabidum
      @Rabidum 7 лет назад

Indeed that is very interesting, I have been looking to replace my array of various monitors for various tasks (from gaming to an eizo one) with one to "rule them all". Especially if this has acceptable blur and I can game on it as well as do my work in split screen comfortably (Software developing). Which was rather lacking on both ends in the Philips model with the blur and all, and the horrid menus/software.
Thank you for pointing out the differences.

I used a 43" Samsung TV as a monitor for about 6 months for software development work. I liked it and I would use it again. The glossy screen was the key downside, so look for a matte screen. A lesser irritation was that it acted like a TV: It would turn off after a period of inactivity. To use it again, I could not just wiggle my mouse or press a key, I had to turn it on again using the remote.

Probably users can have dual-use for this monitor as a 43" (or a 38" Ultra-wide). When we don't need the 4-screens split (depend on the kind of work you're doing) ....Users can Increase the height of the Window's TaskBar on the bottom to reduce the vertical height of the monitor so that it looks like a Ultra-Wide 38". Plus, you get more taskbar area to display applications tabs. ( Go to 4:20 on this video and you know what I mean ). On the other hand, LG could have a built-in function to BLACK-OUT the TOP and BOTTOM (like movies) to create a more seamless conversion to Ultra-Wide.

I use my PC for music production, video editing, internetting and watching TV/films (and occasionally games). I keep whatever I'm working on (music/video), a couple of Chrome windows (one for RUclips and one for everything else) and whatever else I have open dotted about in small windows so I can jump from thing to thing then maximise if I need to focus on something and I have so much space! I see so much information at once and it's glorious. My desk is too small now though.

I currently have a 43UJ63 43" TV as monitor, it's 15ms Response, I can agree to this, having a screen at this size makes it very easy to make extra use of the resolution like keeping the scaling at 100% and make use of the pixels. So when using 4k with a monitor/tv of this size it's very versitile and as you said if u want it in your field of view just ignore the top or place something there , like in my case I can program and have 3 documentation documents open at once increasing productivity even with my second monitor

Moving the screen further away from you has benefits. Say you're farsighted and you can't read something that's too close to your face. Well, a bigger monitor can be moved further away from you without needing font size adjustments. I even went so far as to wall mount my monitor to get those few extra inches of distance that those stupid tripod monitor stands couldn't give me and I'm way happier for it.

I'm a bit late but the reason to get huge screen and push it back is to make your eyes focus on further distance comparing to 1 meter range for ALL monitors and laptops. Eventually your eyes will lose the ability to see far and having a screen further might delay this effect and... Eventually save quite a lot of $$$ for contacts and glasses. How often do you have screen breaks and eye exercises?

I got my 43UN700-B last week. It's really awesome for working databases or large excel files. Opening 2 apps full width one over the other for comparisons is just great. I best describe it as having 2 ultrawide monitors one over the other when one ultrawide just wouldn't cut it for my needs, and at a fraction of the price. And, when I'll be back at the office, connecting other PCs will just be a bonus. Hope this helps someone

I'm watching this on phill, as a programmer I really love the screen real estate, a browser on half of the screen and eclipse on the other half. I agree with Linus though, big screens are not for everyone, for gaming I actually run the monitor in a custom widescreen resolution with black bars on top and bottom, so that in essence the experience is the same. I recommend a beefy VESA arm for those looking for adjustability

Monitor's are seriously behind TV's right now (picture quality, hdr, etc). I just bought a new "monitor" last week. I had to buy a Sony x900e because no monitor had HDR, oled (ips is fine, but not perfect with their light bleed, etc), 4k with a higher rate then 60 (future proofing), etc etc. Still waiting to see how the new QLED/HDR monitors do. But since all the QLED TV's are edge lit, I am not holding my breath.

I have the Philips BDM4350UC, which is a similar kind of product. 43 inch, 4K, IPS, though it comes with TV-style legs, so it doesn't even have tilt in terms of ergonomic adjustability.
But I've gotten used to it since and the flexibility is amazing.
You can have 4 1080p monitors, 9 720p monitors or 6 windows that are 720p wide, but 1080p tall (3 col, 2 row), which addresses the "usefulness" of having more vertical space that Linus talked about.
I use a program called "gridmove" with a slightly customized grid that makes it easy to set up my work space in literally seconds.
It isn't for everyone and it took some time to get used to, but I think I prefer this to having multiple screens on my desk.

I bought a 65" samsung ks8000 4K set for my living room, and run my XBox, cable box and desktop computer through it. I'm not a hard core gamer, but I gotta tell you, Xbox on a 65" HDR screen is pretty awesome. The KS8000 upscales the 1080p video from the Xbox to simulated 4K, and it does it really well. The KS8000 also has built in RUclips and Netflix, so I've got direct 4K feeds; the XBox also handles 4K (feeds, not gaming), and doubles as a 4K DVD player. I use the computer with a wireless keyboard and mouse from across the room, which is really, really nice. I can seamlessly switch back and forth from computer to cable to netflix to xbox, all without getting my arse out of the living room recliner. Really convenient. And fattening.
It's really a damned good visual experience, and I was able to combine my monitor money with my TV money, and get a high end TV instead of having a mediocre monitor and a mediocre TV. Worth looking at, people.

About moving it further back vs. buying a smaller monitor:
The thing is, it's not that much expensive compared to a let's say 32", so I don't feel like you waste money if you move it further back. I don't have it *on* my desk but just behind it with a VESA tripod. Gives a nice workspace and clean setup

I replaced my triple 23" 1080p monitor setup with a 43" 4k, and it's bliss. Snapping Windows to corners is great when your work flow has you running multiple programs at once.

I use a 40" 1080p TV as my main screen in my three monitor setup (two 24" monitors on the sides), I have been doing this for quite a few years now, even before super slim TVs, and enjoy this type of setup. It is/has been difficult to get good 4k TV, with high refresh rates etc., in only 40"-43" size. So this is something I would very much like to upgrade to.
As to getting a bigger screen, I tried that a few years ago. My now living room TV (a 55" plasma) was on SUPER sale when I was replacing/upgrading my main PC screen so I bought it to try it out... I had to replace it in less than a week because it was giving me headaches. I am used to a 40" TV at around 2.5+ feet for typical PC use, am accustomed to being able to see the whole screen and turn my head for better viewing of side monitors, HOWEVER, the larger 55" screen forced my eyes to focus much more difficultly to take in the entire screen and like I said ended up giving me headaches quite quickly. This, for me, makes a well built 4k "PC monitor" (especially at that price) something that would make a great upgrade to my existing style setup, though I would still need to upgrade my PC now to actually do 4k properly, so it goes on my wish list for later.

If there was a built in program, where you could set the "monitor" to separate itself into multiple windows, so you could run multiple programs in full screen mode, that would be great.
A lot of professional programs are made to be run in fullscreen, with you running any other programs you have on separate monitors, which would suck for "monitors" like this. Running the programs in smaller, separate windows usually cuts down on utility and functionality. BTW I don't know if someone has already made a program like this, but if LG would recommend this for professional use, they should create a pre-installed program for it.

with a 4K tv, you can watch 4K youtube if you A. hook a pc to it, or B. it is a smart tv. and movies depend on the qality of the medium you get them on, did you download it in 1080p, it will be 1080, do you have a blue-ray with 4K, it will still be 4K. and a TV has image processing making the image much better then on a standard monitor, at the cost of input lag. so, a tv is still better. and on the tax, they will allways find a new way to tax you, welcome in the age of of govermental stealing.

I use the LG 43ud-79 instead of a TV at 4-6 foot viewing distance. At less than 4 feet, pixels are noticeable. Speakers are more than satisfactory for non-audiophiles, but lack bass. As linus notes, it is a matte panel, great for well-lit rooms. Most TVs are glossy. $200 over a comparable TV gets you a matte panel, great I/O and 10-20ms Less input lag than modern tv panels. Otherwise, save that $200 and use a 43" 4k TV as a monitor.

I have been using 30 inch 2560*1600 (Dell Ultrasharp 3007WFP) between 2006 and 2014 then did I switch over to 50 inch 4k TV. It was both better and worse. Due to old age I am in need of glasses, but by moving the TV farther away I could maintain the pixel density and have more pixels that's a help for vision and still avoid glasses (for a few years more). The 50 inch TV was flat and limited to HDMI 1.4 and that is 30Hz (290X then a 970), that's not good enough, so in December 2015 it was time for a upgrade to a curved 55 inch Samsung 4k TV and a new graphics card 1060 (I don´t play at all, mostly electronic CAD work, and office stuff) to get 4k and 60Hz (over HDMI). Much better and I would not recommend anybody to use any screen above 30 inch to be of the non-curved type. So old age and its related issues is a god reason to get a bigger screen and a lot of nice stuff come for "free" then (always nice to switch to 4k Netflix series to relax).

Been using pretty much this for just over a year... it's great for music production. When you're working with Protools it's nice to have the vertical real-estate, to have more sends and inserts, as well as the horizontal space for a load of channels set to jumbo. Especially since in a studio you're a fair bit further back with all the controllers or mixing surfaces you may have. Then again, my previous setup was two 21.5 inch 1080p monitors... though it dosn't feel like I lose anything important when I go from my retina macbook...

I tested the monitor at a local electronics store. I like the ability for a 4 window split because I can watch a video on learning a new programming language, have my IDE running, and email or a DMS open in one screen. While I have 29 inch wide screen IPS but 2 way split is not very usefull when I need to view 4 windows. I used Windows snap as the alternate for the LG software and I will have to try it when I buy it, view multiple devices on one screen is cool also, (many reviews stated this).

I am using 40 inch 4k philips monitor for over a year now and I just cannot imagine using anything else. I love it for work (i do online marketing so its really helpfull to be able to view more websites or web tools at once, or just stretch out a web tool for setting up automatic email sequences over the whole screen and just see it all without scrolling to the sides, I love it for occasional narrating of simple videos because so much text fits verticaly next to the premiere so I dont have to scroll and for my occasional gaming pretty great as well. My girlfriend hated it in the begging, but when she needed to do a translation job and was able to put the image she was translating on one side and the image where she was putting the translating into to the other side and and see it all without scrolling she started appreciating it as well.I tried some of the ultra wides but they just seem worse for productivity in my opinion. For content consumption isnt it better to just a have a 4k screen to watch 4k on then some ultra wide that is going to have black bars on the sides?

Ill take my 40MU6300 that I paid $300 for over this all day long. Bonus is it has smart features like netflix which is great when I want to kick back. As to Linus preference and how you have to move the mouse alot and move your eyes alot? I dont have either issue, my mouse can go from one corner to the other corner in about ~3-5 inches yet is still very controllable for finer details (for reference I am using a MX Master with higher sensitivity settings). I dont think they set it up correctly OR gave it a chance to get used to it. At first sure it feels different and you feel like you have to move your eyes mores than other monitors but after a few days it becomes normal and you wont even notice that. As to the pixel density? I think they should try a low end 4k samsung TV, I dont have that issue even if I sit closer to the screen. My screen is wall mounted like 3" above my desk, its about 3.5 feet from eyes this is where I naturally sit since my desk has a keyboard tray that slides out

So how is that such an outdated idea? I guess you can always get a TV tuner card for your computer or buy a converter box with an HDMI port out as a workaround. But I would rather have a built-in tuner.

I've been rocking the Korean version of this for over a year (VA instead of IPS). In windows I agree with ALL of Linus' criticism. In Linux with a tiling window manager, there's simply nothing like it for a programmer. It was a total game changer for me.
