I’m 70 and having just retired, I’ll be selling my 3 year old brilliant and sensible Nissan Qasqai and keeping my 12 year old Alfa Romeo with it’s blissful Busso v6 and seductive styling. An Alfa is like owning a gift of love, I never stop marvelling at how wonderful it is. Oh, and it’s been perfectly reliable, every thing still works as it should.
The Alfa Nut oh, i think youre being a bit harsh on the golf, ive had several and they are great cars. Its more than an appliance. My wifes had an r32 for nearly ten years and it has tons of character...and reliability. We are fortunate to have so many great cars these days to chose from. I think we're getting a bit spoilt.
I am a 52 year old German, and I'd never pick-up the Golf....You see dozens of them around here..So boring!!!... That's why I've always loved Alfa Romeo...from my youth to right on...I've got a MiTo..155 bhp .TB..Multiair..It is such a pleasure and fun to drive with..I'd never would exchance it for a VW...ALFA rules!!!!
German ford is true. Plus for the price of the Golf you could buy a Giulia Rwd 😉 or a Giulietta and drop some upgrades on it like a stage 2 turbo putting it to 350bhp
I was a Italian car fan untill now. my 1st 4 cars were italian, then i was in teh market for a "sports car" which ended up bein ga "hot hatch" for various everyday life reasons. So our roads are generally really bad, take that in consideration as that is a major factor, for everyday driving. I was looking at Giulia QV, Megane RS, Golf 7 GTI, I30N, New model Megane RS, Focus ST, Audi S3, Civic Type R, all of theese are eighter too expensive or i just dont like the looks of them / interior, or are too track focused = horrible for a daily. So it came down to Th 1st 3 menthioned cars. Megane RS was out of question due to "bad" resell value, crap interior, not the best reliability being a Renault, and the sheer outdated looks (could not afford the new model) The giulietta, its outdated, not best realibility, horrible resell value, not a good Auto transmission, and not the biggest fan of the cars front end. So it came down to the Golf, never tought i would ever buy that to be hones. Its boring i said, hell, many people keep saying that. But then i arranged a test drive and i was blown away how comfortable it is, how refined, and how nice the DSG is, let alone how good the engine is and that it can be mapped to 300hp and 350Nm easyily. Its expensive, it is, but i still end up buying it and i dont regret it, and i know the resell value will be still good in 5 years, since i was looking at MK6 GTIs over here for reference. It looks boring ? It does look boring from teh erar, from the side not too much since mine is a 3door, the front is pretty agressive. Well you can always work on the lloks with tuning and i will do exacly that, liek i did on my last 3 cars, which were unique in the end. So much about that, i bought a GTI and i really like it as a everyday confortable hothatch that i take to work and send it on twisty B roads on the way home
Great review guys, always good to see Alfa in a road test. I recently changed from a C63 to an Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio. Wow what a difference, Italian craziness, I had other great cars including an M3. By far the Alfa is the best drivers car I've ever owned. I agree with most of you're comments and I've also owned 3 GTIs, as good as they are the Alfa makes me smile more when ever I'm driving, plus other road users sit up and take notice.
I have a Giulietta that's 12 years old and drive very well. guess it's also down to how the previous owner looks after it. Really like it though@@jokerash
My Giulietta is 13 years old, one of the first production from 2011 and it´s driving very nice. Every ride is special and I always look back after leaving her. Alfa really is something different
Absolutely love my Giulietta. Mines tuned to 340HP and has a manual gearbox as it's an older model. It's fair to say it is insanely fun to drive. I've had a Brera and a GTV amongst other cars. This is by far my favourite.

@@duleopasni all are nice cars. But it depends what you want them for. If you can get a GTV with a busso engine you will be very happy. Still not as fast as the Giulietta though but the sound is amazing. Giulietta is way more reliable than the other 2 and handles better. Brera is a better tourer but I was constantly changing parts and chasing suspension knocks.
@@1nomadxyz I have done most of it myself. But the map I had done at Bianco Auto development. They are making a tuning kit for the Giulietta now. Track tested. But mine is quicker as I had a stage 2 turbo built and a few other additional bits.

Had my giullietta a year now and it's the best car I've ever owned alfa's for me from now on this shape has been around since 2010 and it still turns heads proper drivers car.
Great Video guys, and I think every one knew, the Golf will always be the sensible choice, the Alfa will always take the heart, you can own a Golf, but the Alfa will own you, and you will always turn around as you walk away.
I had a Giulietta for almost 4 years, and I had to turn back and look at it every time I left it - It's the only car i've ever owned that had that allure.
I am exactly the same looking at my red 159 and I can’t wait to get one with a more powerful engine as the 1.8 Vauxhall unit is underpowered but insurance for a 19 year old in a Tbi… yeh so mpi it was
I've had 3 Golfs (GTI, TSI and a base model). One almost perfect, but never lovable. For me it would be the Alfa. It's a living thing, at times challenging but ultimately much more rewarding. Jason's comments hit the nail on the head. Totally agree!
Nigel Howard You shuld probably try the GTI Clubsport (GTI 40 Year Anniversary) as well. As its more like Golf R, but without the heavy 4WD. I own it myself & videos can be seen at my channel. Its one of few cars that can send 100 % of power to the front axle... And you will definetly notice that first time you step pedal to the metal.
Clubsport was limited to 400 cars and came at a price of 44.000 EUR. It's the only version of current GTi that keeps up with current market performance standards, but it's price and production units make it irrelevant. PS/ it's not the only car capable of putting that power to the front axle. Both the (6 year old) Focus RS Mk2 and Type R do better with 300+ hp.
You just need to watch the facial expression when driving the Alfa to understand what Alfa does over any other car. That smile and excitement shows and thats what a great car does to ones soul. Great review
C'mon Harry, the smile on your face when driving the Alfa says it all. I own a Giulietta and it's exactly that: even after three years it just makes me smile, and I have to get up to a little bit of mischief every time I drive it - even if it's just one bend. Alfas are just special this way.
Haaahaaa.. You hit it on the Nail.. 'even if its just one bend' !!. I have a gtv 2l ts 916 pase 2 and makes me smile every time I take her out for a spin !!! Thats what makes Alfas special !
Great video gents, and the right verdict. I've just passed 70K miles in a QV (Veloce) 1.7 Giulietta 6 sp manual and it hasn't missed a beat. If you are enthusiastic about your driving the Alfa is the better option, if you are into logical and efficient the train is the cheapest option to get from A to B... :P

In conclusion, VW Golf GTi for the polished, middle-aged, millenial, tech-savvy gentleman. The Alfa Giulietta Veloce for the tamed YOB and hormone driven. Alfa for me. Keep it up, Metcalfes'. Giulietta would be a great choice for the used-market enthusiast.
My Giulietta was the best car I've ever owned - drives brilliantly, and looks fantastic - I had more comments from strangers about it than any other car I've owned. I regret selling it - and will probably end up getting another one!
It was a bit small for three kids, as they were getting older and taking up more space - however i'm considering getting another one as a second car. I had mine for almost 4 years and It still excited me whenever i drove it, and I still had to look back at it every time I parked it - No other car i've owned has done that for me. Harry is definitely right in the fact that owning an Alfa at least once turns you into more of a car enthusiast - It's those details and that Italian flair that suck you in.
raycollard1984 as owner of a Giulia I feel like giving you just an advice: it's not that spacious nor practical for a family with 3 kids, for that regard you may want to consider a Stelvio; if you already have a more family friendly car and wanna get back to Alfa as a secondary car, then absolutely go for it. If you liked Giulietta that much, you may very well fall in love for a Giulia.
I recently had to sell my Giulietta . It feels like i lost a family member . There is this magical thing about Alfa Romeos they really put a huge smile on your face and you just can't help but look at them twice when you park it in a parking lot . They are the definition of unique and all these little quirks makes them a thoroughbred italian . This review made me realize that '' special factor '' one more time and i miss my car already . Thanks so much for this video. I’ve just bought the Alfa Veloce (a 2016 facelift model) and pick it up in few days time. I loved the way it went on the test drive - I even thought the torque steer was fun. It just goes to show that (with all the magazine reviews giving it only 3 stars) journalists are quite often only looking at ultimate finesse and accuracy rather than the fun side. And I’m 59!
Couldn't agree more. We were looking for a second car and I have always wanted an Alfa. This great video helped make up my mind. I am now the proud owner of a second hand, but new to me 2016 Giulietta Speciale 1.4 TB Multiair with the TCT gearbox in Competizione (4C) Red. So happy with my choice and it has exceeded all my expectations.
I owned the Giulietta QV TCT Launch Edition and is was the best car I ever had. It is blistering fast for only 241HP, is planted to the road, makes an awsome sound and the seating position is great! I remapped the car to 275HP and then this thing really comes alive. The launch control is just epic, with the 2 settings (3000 rpm / 4500 rpm). I got some video's on my channel where you can the acceleration. It's also a very reliable car. This car will have a sweet spot in my heart forever.
Ingo Cernohorsky a 4C indeed. I sold it because I drove it for business and private. That became to much. So I Wanted Something special for my private kilometers and bought The Alfa Romeo 4C. Now still have to find a car for my business kilometers.... 🤔

FalconXE302 that Giulietta isnt much behind of Golf if you look all the aspects of car.There isnt muchof a diference.I would say it comes down to personal taste and what you like more.So buying this Alfa is ok thing to buy as is Golf.I like them both actualy.Dont think Golf GTI isnt sexy and dont think Alfa is unreliable.
I bought a Giulietta veloce 3 months ago, 6 months old and 3000 miles for 21k. The dynamic mode makes the steering nice and heavy and makes the engine feel so sharp. Must be one of the best used car bargains out there. Such a great car to drive and often gets admired.
Excellent video, great to see father and son enjoy the day. Our family car is a Giulietta Multiair 170 bhp, had it 4 years, great car whether crawling along the North Circular or charging down to Spain. One amusing point re the grill, some drivers, particularly BMWs, see it in their mirrors and have a strange compulsion to zoom off like a scalded cat !
Excellent review! It's exactly why us Alfisti love them so much! Not necessarily "the Best" but the Alfas is the one with the fun. (But the new Alfa Giulia actually IS the best.... haha!) Keep these up Harry, spot on!
Great point about the style of the key... It's the part of the car you take inside with you... I have a MINI Cooper S with 225 bhp and every time I drive it I get home with a smile on my face, and I imagine the Alfa does the same.
You both summed it up perfectly, the Golf is probably the better car but you want to drive the Alfa home, Its the Alfa for me every time! once you have owned an Alfa you either become an Italian car enthusiast or you will never buy another...
Harry, your son is an amazing person and is the younger version of you. Me being 30 years old, i got used to you and all of your reviews back with Evo, but just how your son just cut in about the key and his idea of how thats the piece of your vehicle you bring in the house with you, i never really thought of it that way and it was good to hear it from the "younger generation" perspective. I know i am much more his generation then yours, but from what Im told, I'm an old soul, and definitely can relate to your generation more with the old school way of doing cars. Personally, i would involve him more often in these reviews when possible.

I’ve been trying to decide between these 2 for my next car- I’m currently driving an Alfa- and it’s very much a battle between head and heart- my Alfa sufferers frequent electrical failures /anomalies that don’t affect the drive, but driving it always makes me smile. The Golf is the sensible choice, but who wants to be sensible?

I’ve got the Alfa giulietta veloce like them I love it ,mines white I certainly didn’t pay anywhere near £30000 for it when i got it new and the thing they didn’t mention is how well built the Alfa is now I’ve had mine for getting on for 2 years no squicks no rattles nothing whatsoever has gone wrong.summing up an Alfa is like your pet dog you love it ,the golf is like your washing machine you just use it.
It really depends on how you maintain it...my father still owns a 147 from 2009 and I assure you its still brand new. However...once you try it you love it. It doesn't matter what people really say, the germans really build great quality cars, but when you drive a german car you're just a bully on the road. There's no emotion whatsoever (at least in my case) just a good engineering machine that decides for you what to do on the road. Alfa has always been about the pasion. About the heart and soul of driving. Pure agressivity and fun! So when you hear people complaining about the squeaks I always laugh. Cause Italians have the greatest car racing history in the world. We could debate a lot on this argument but do a reseaalrch. Not to mention that when the Fiat first made a turbo car, audi was just experimenting their first motor. Non to mention that Ferrari worked with Alfa and then decided to take his role in car history asside. Not to mention that maserati and lancia had a great history in Alfas garages and then went for their own trophies. But all of these iconic cars were built by a single name. FABBRICA ITALIANA AUTOMOBILI TORINO. P.s. the germans are the cleverest people on earth. Buying stuff they didnt make. Like the lambos. Like the lambo needed their engines ahahahahahahahah and people not getting it. Please
They might not squeak (actually a lot of them do) but worse still is that a lot of the so called premium materials on the German cars are coatings used as to improve the finishing touch so when you touch them they feel plush. Just get in 10 yrs old cars and see how most look cracked, dated, and feel anything but nasty. German car industry never has been ir his what most make of them. Just the engine on that Alfa beats hands down the basic engineering on the VAG lump.
Great comparison, and Charlie is spot-on when he mentions the key. Think back to Ford's homage to the GT40 the 2000's Ford GT and it came with a Focus/Mondeo Key !!! Such attention to detail from Alfa - having said that you could hear the creaking of the cabin materials in the Alfa......
Yeah I have a 159 and while it actually sounds much quieter than this it creaks but I forgive it because it’s so much sportier ride than anything else like it I’ve driven everything else Is too predictable. That being said the 159 has a ridiculously stiff shell

I actually own an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, only the 1.4 Multiair, but you said something about the car putting a smile on your face every time you drive it. It's been putting a smile on my face for over a year now and I still can't get enough. I've actually thought about buying the Volkswagen Golf, but my heart told me to go for the Alfa. Seeing this video helped me realize that I've made the right choice and that the better car isn't always the car to buy, so thanks for this video. And I hope you think about doing more video's with your son.

Shame you didn't have the weather on your side....I have the Alfa and in the dry it absolutely flies (I'm 52 by the way). Alfa give you an extra deposit allowance if you work for the NHS too...hence we're on our 4th!
Nice video - it would be the GTI for me all day long as I've always enjoyed the package they offer! I could only afford a 2 year old GT TDI Golf when I was 22 - a £30-35K GTI would have been way beyond me (almost still is haha)!
I'm a month in to owning my first Alfa, the Guilietta Veloce 2.0 JDTm-2. 170 bhp as standard but soon to be remapped to 215. Such a fun car to drive and beautiful to look at in Rosso Maranella. I wish I'd bought one long ago. Great review, I've been looking for an unbiased comparison with one of the Alfa rivals, like the Golf. Just goes to confirm what I thought: the sensible choice will always be the Golf, the heart will always choose the Alfa
Should have gone for the multiair 1.4 170, like I did, with a much lighter nose than the heavy diesel engine, handles much better, doesn't have the massive torque, but has plenty in dynamic mode.

Great review, I'd have the Alfa all the way. I have a 145 Cloverleaf as my first car and I love it. The 2.0 TwinSpark engine is great. Charlie did raise a really good point about car keys and he is absolutely right, it's the one thing you take with you and reminds you of the car, and it should be special. The 145's key is an simple red one but it does trick and stands out haha Ps: Could you test a 145? (or any Alfa of that period). 90's cars don't get much love on RUclips...

Also enjoyed the father and son drive and chat. I hope it was the camera rattling in the Alfa? It's a pity that you did not have a DSG GTI to make it more fair. The interior of the Golf and the Alfa is night and day though Harry, the switch gear and the quality of the plastics. Something I have learnt over the years is that one cannot really take a car for a quick spin and come to a conclusion about it, you have to live with it - learn it. Your son has spent a lot of time in the Alfa and is familiar with it, but not with the GTI. Keep up the good work though, always enjoy the videos.
I have owned many cars over the years. I am just shy of 40 years old so I still want to enjoy my driving as I do lots of it. I test drove both new and used versions of these alone with the Renault Megane RS just a few months ago. It is a second car so really wasn't too fussed about practicality or gadgets. Needless to say, I have owned an Alfa Giulietta Cloverleaf now since then. I liked both the Golf and Megane UNTIL I drove the Alfa. The difference is immense straight away. The Alfa was just so much fun and had so much character that I couldn't stop smiling after the test drive. The Golf was nice but you could fall asleep driving it as there was no real enjoyment, it was just nice is about as much as I could say. The same with the Megane but the Megane felt really flimsy all over. If you want to enjoy driving avoid a German car (I have owned many in the past) and get something with some passion. The Alfa has quite a few quirks (such as struggling to get to the handbrake when the driver armrest is down!!!) but even knowing this, I could never choose a Golf or Megane over the Alfa. I even test Drove an Audi TTS and that again was just too sensible, there was no sense of fun. You can see it in the presenters faces that really they both love driving the Alfa. Driving a car should be a pleasure and that is exactly what Alfa Romeo designers care about most, and it shows from the minute you turn the key.
What a cracking video, as petrol heads we've all had a lot of cars i'm no different, im 54yrs old an owned 3 Golf's all GTI's in the 80's, however, after owning one Alfa I fell in love & back then they were unreliable, & that's being kind. But, over the years they have improved beyond belief, we had a 146 in the 90's best car ever, drove it everyday for 12 weeks 240 miles daily, it never failed me. Now we have a Giulia quadrifoglio, & our beloved Range Rover has blown a gasket, & we're going to buy another Alfa a Giulietta, 1.4 Multiair as our youngest son has one & its a scream to drive. Imagine a 1.4ltr going to 60mph in 7 seconds & a top speed of 135mph, mad simply mad.
I bought my Mark V Gti new a long time ago and it was a revelation. A car for all seasons, a car for all opportunities. I bought it when I lived in Germany and it could be let loose on the Autobahns, I’ve driven it in the Alps and on long, fast trips across Europe. I also towed a 6.2 metre trailer sailer long distances and taken five people away on trips. It’s the car I drive to the shops. The performance and usability are first class, the practicability is a huge bonus. I’ve also got a Boxster that I’ve had for a couple of years longer than the a Golf but A to B the Golf is probably quicker because it’s just so easy to get the performance onto the road. Best of all is it’s the perfect Q car. The public at large just see a hatchback, those in the know see something completely different. I’d love the Alfa but I don’t think that I’d have kept it or it would have kept me smiling half as long as the Golf has.
Imho a Golf is a temporary ownership until the next one comes out, whereas with an Alfa there is a bond created, I always end up falling in love with them and selling never even crosses my mind. A VW is a well built disposable item, but the flawed Alfa Romeo, you fall in love with, period.
Late to this video, but I'm driving a 2011 Giulietta QV, which my wife and I bought new, and I LOVE IT! Looked at a Golf GTi at the time and decided that the Alfa was the choice! Haven't ever regretted it! So much fun, and I'm 56!
I’ve got the exact same Alfa Guiletta Veloce in that beautiful matte grey. It’s a fabulous car. Having driven with a BMW 435i for a coulpe years and switching to this Alfa. I can say that the Alfa has so much more character. When you drive the Alfa it’s an event. I’ve driven my baby to 235km/h in the pouring rain and it was fine. Be aware tho, this Alfa is crazy. But it’s so much fun and looks great. Parking at Bondi beach in the matte grey with everyone looking is just so cool. Buy one, fuck the reviews. Have the biggest smile on your face.
I have Guiletta QV line TCT 2.0 and love it apart from the speedo position which I hate! When driving around town where speed is lower and steering wheel movement more pronounced, the legal speeds are obscured by the steering wheel, this is particularly an issue on roundabouts and could have been totally avoided by swapping the Speedo and rev counter around. P.S. I am now retired and wouldn't dream of going back to VAG

I've been looking at an S3 and Golf R although thats the upper price point...I've been into Alfa twice previously and left without one, after seeing that Giulietta though, it might be third time lucky. The Magnesia Grey looks the business.
With 8k difference you could uprate the turbo to give 350bhp from the Alfa and a fair few more upgrades. Plus Alfa gearbox can be put into manual shift with paddles and it gives a huge performance difference as you can downshift like you would with a manual gearbox
Daniel Fl. Both the Golf and the Giulietta loose their value at the same speed, if you search about the second hand cars they are all around the same price in similar conditions, the newer ones are still more than €10-15000.

So our roads are generally really bad, take that in consideration as that is a major factor, for everyday driving.
I was looking at Giulia QV, Megane RS, Golf 7 GTI,
I30N, New model Megane RS, Focus ST, Audi S3, Civic Type R, all of theese are eighter too expensive or i just dont like the looks of them / interior, or are too track focused = horrible for a daily.
So it came down to Th 1st 3 menthioned cars.
Megane RS was out of question due to "bad" resell value, crap interior, not the best reliability being a Renault, and the sheer outdated looks (could not afford the new model)
The giulietta, its outdated, not best realibility, horrible resell value, not a good Auto transmission, and not the biggest fan of the cars front end.
So it came down to the Golf, never tought i would ever buy that to be hones. Its boring i said, hell, many people keep saying that.
But then i arranged a test drive and i was blown away how comfortable it is, how refined, and how nice the DSG is, let alone how good the engine is and that it can be mapped to 300hp and 350Nm easyily.
Its expensive, it is, but i still end up buying it and i dont regret it, and i know the resell value will be still good in 5 years, since i was looking at MK6 GTIs over here for reference.
It looks boring ?
It does look boring from teh erar, from the side not too much since mine is a 3door, the front is pretty agressive.
Well you can always work on the lloks with tuning and i will do exacly that, liek i did on my last 3 cars, which were unique in the end.
So much about that, i bought a GTI and i really like it as a everyday confortable hothatch that i take to work and send it on twisty B roads on the way home
I often say the life is too short to drive a boring car.
After owning the Alfa Giulietta Veloce for 3 years it continues to bring a smile over any other hatch.

Great review guys, always good to see Alfa in a road test. I recently changed from a C63 to an Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio. Wow what a difference, Italian craziness, I had other great cars including an M3. By far the Alfa is the best drivers car I've ever owned. I agree with most of you're comments and I've also owned 3 GTIs, as good as they are the Alfa makes me smile more when ever I'm driving, plus other road users sit up and take notice.

My Giulietta is 13 years old, one of the first production from 2011 and it´s driving very nice. Every ride is special and I always look back after leaving her. Alfa really is something different

Absolutely love my Giulietta. Mines tuned to 340HP and has a manual gearbox as it's an older model. It's fair to say it is insanely fun to drive. I've had a Brera and a GTV amongst other cars. This is by far my favourite.

@@duleopasni all are nice cars. But it depends what you want them for. If you can get a GTV with a busso engine you will be very happy. Still not as fast as the Giulietta though but the sound is amazing.
Giulietta is way more reliable than the other 2 and handles better. Brera is a better tourer but I was constantly changing parts and chasing suspension knocks.
@@1nomadxyz I have done most of it myself. But the map I had done at Bianco Auto development. They are making a tuning kit for the Giulietta now. Track tested. But mine is quicker as I had a stage 2 turbo built and a few other additional bits.

I've had 3 Golfs (GTI, TSI and a base model). One almost perfect, but never lovable. For me it would be the Alfa. It's a living thing, at times challenging but ultimately much more rewarding. Jason's comments hit the nail on the head. Totally agree!
Nigel Howard You shuld probably try the GTI Clubsport (GTI 40 Year Anniversary) as well. As its more like Golf R, but without the heavy 4WD. I own it myself & videos can be seen at my channel. Its one of few cars that can send 100 % of power to the front axle... And you will definetly notice that first time you step pedal to the metal.

Clubsport was limited to 400 cars and came at a price of 44.000 EUR. It's the only version of current GTi that keeps up with current market performance standards, but it's price and production units make it irrelevant. PS/ it's not the only car capable of putting that power to the front axle. Both the (6 year old) Focus RS Mk2 and Type R do better with 300+ hp.
The huge price difference could drop on some very fun upgrades on the Alfa

C'mon Harry, the smile on your face when driving the Alfa says it all. I own a Giulietta and it's exactly that: even after three years it just makes me smile, and I have to get up to a little bit of mischief every time I drive it - even if it's just one bend. Alfas are just special this way.

Great video gents, and the right verdict. I've just passed 70K miles in a QV (Veloce) 1.7 Giulietta 6 sp manual and it hasn't missed a beat. If you are enthusiastic about your driving the Alfa is the better option, if you are into logical and efficient the train is the cheapest option to get from A to B... :P

My Giulietta was the best car I've ever owned - drives brilliantly, and looks fantastic - I had more comments from strangers about it than any other car I've owned. I regret selling it - and will probably end up getting another one!

It was a bit small for three kids, as they were getting older and taking up more space - however i'm considering getting another one as a second car.
I had mine for almost 4 years and It still excited me whenever i drove it, and I still had to look back at it every time I parked it - No other car i've owned has done that for me.
Harry is definitely right in the fact that owning an Alfa at least once turns you into more of a car enthusiast - It's those details and that Italian flair that suck you in.

raycollard1984 as owner of a Giulia I feel like giving you just an advice: it's not that spacious nor practical for a family with 3 kids, for that regard you may want to consider a Stelvio; if you already have a more family friendly car and wanna get back to Alfa as a secondary car, then absolutely go for it. If you liked Giulietta that much, you may very well fall in love for a Giulia.
I recently had to sell my Giulietta . It feels like i lost a family member . There is this magical thing about Alfa Romeos they really put a huge smile on your face and you just can't help but look at them twice when you park it in a parking lot . They are the definition of unique and all these little quirks makes them a thoroughbred italian . This review made me realize that '' special factor '' one more time and i miss my car already . Thanks so much for this video. I’ve just bought the Alfa Veloce (a 2016 facelift model) and pick it up in few days time. I loved the way it went on the test drive - I even thought the torque steer was fun.
It just goes to show that (with all the magazine reviews giving it only 3 stars) journalists are quite often only looking at ultimate finesse and accuracy rather than the fun side.

I am now the proud owner of a second hand, but new to me 2016 Giulietta Speciale 1.4 TB Multiair with the TCT gearbox in Competizione (4C) Red. So happy with my choice and it has exceeded all my expectations.
I owned the Giulietta QV TCT Launch Edition and is was the best car I ever had. It is blistering fast for only 241HP, is planted to the road, makes an awsome sound and the seating position is great!
I remapped the car to 275HP and then this thing really comes alive. The launch control is just epic, with the 2 settings (3000 rpm / 4500 rpm). I got some video's on my channel where you can the acceleration. It's also a very reliable car.
This car will have a sweet spot in my heart forever.

I bought a Giulietta veloce 3 months ago, 6 months old and 3000 miles for 21k. The dynamic mode makes the steering nice and heavy and makes the engine feel so sharp. Must be one of the best used car bargains out there. Such a great car to drive and often gets admired.
Excellent video, great to see father and son enjoy the day. Our family car is a Giulietta Multiair 170 bhp, had it 4 years, great car whether crawling along the North Circular or charging down to Spain. One amusing point re the grill, some drivers, particularly BMWs, see it in their mirrors and have a strange compulsion to zoom off like a scalded cat !

Great point about the style of the key... It's the part of the car you take inside with you... I have a MINI Cooper S with 225 bhp and every time I drive it I get home with a smile on my face, and I imagine the Alfa does the same.

Harry, your son is an amazing person and is the younger version of you. Me being 30 years old, i got used to you and all of your reviews back with Evo, but just how your son just cut in about the key and his idea of how thats the piece of your vehicle you bring in the house with you, i never really thought of it that way and it was good to hear it from the "younger generation" perspective. I know i am much more his generation then yours, but from what Im told, I'm an old soul, and definitely can relate to your generation more with the old school way of doing cars. Personally, i would involve him more often in these reviews when possible.

I’ve been trying to decide between these 2 for my next car- I’m currently driving an Alfa- and it’s very much a battle between head and heart- my Alfa sufferers frequent electrical failures /anomalies that don’t affect the drive, but driving it always makes me smile. The Golf is the sensible choice, but who wants to be sensible?

I’ve got the Alfa giulietta veloce like them I love it ,mines white I certainly didn’t pay anywhere near £30000 for it when i got it new and the thing they didn’t mention is how well built the Alfa is now I’ve had mine for getting on for 2 years no squicks no rattles nothing whatsoever has gone wrong.summing up an Alfa is like your pet dog you love it ,the golf is like your washing machine you just use it.
Not squeaking plastic trim and such is standard on VW for decades, in German cars in general.

It really depends on how you maintain it...my father still owns a 147 from 2009 and I assure you its still brand new. However...once you try it you love it. It doesn't matter what people really say, the germans really build great quality cars, but when you drive a german car you're just a bully on the road. There's no emotion whatsoever (at least in my case) just a good engineering machine that decides for you what to do on the road. Alfa has always been about the pasion. About the heart and soul of driving. Pure agressivity and fun! So when you hear people complaining about the squeaks I always laugh. Cause Italians have the greatest car racing history in the world. We could debate a lot on this argument but do a reseaalrch. Not to mention that when the Fiat first made a turbo car, audi was just experimenting their first motor. Non to mention that Ferrari worked with Alfa and then decided to take his role in car history asside. Not to mention that maserati and lancia had a great history in Alfas garages and then went for their own trophies. But all of these iconic cars were built by a single name. FABBRICA ITALIANA AUTOMOBILI TORINO. P.s. the germans are the cleverest people on earth. Buying stuff they didnt make. Like the lambos. Like the lambo needed their engines ahahahahahahahah and people not getting it. Please

They might not squeak (actually a lot of them do) but worse still is that a lot of the so called premium materials on the German cars are coatings used as to improve the finishing touch so when you touch them they feel plush. Just get in 10 yrs old cars and see how most look cracked, dated, and feel anything but nasty. German car industry never has been ir his what most make of them. Just the engine on that Alfa beats hands down the basic engineering on the VAG lump.
£1000 option on the Alfa Matt paint. That gets me a car a year for two years. Love the videos. Please keep posting them.

Great comparison, and Charlie is spot-on when he mentions the key. Think back to Ford's homage to the GT40 the 2000's Ford GT and it came with a Focus/Mondeo Key !!! Such attention to detail from Alfa - having said that you could hear the creaking of the cabin materials in the Alfa......
Yeah I have a 159 and while it actually sounds much quieter than this it creaks but I forgive it because it’s so much sportier ride than anything else like it I’ve driven everything else Is too predictable. That being said the 159 has a ridiculously stiff shell

I actually own an Alfa Romeo Giulietta, only the 1.4 Multiair, but you said something about the car putting a smile on your face every time you drive it. It's been putting a smile on my face for over a year now and I still can't get enough. I've actually thought about buying the Volkswagen Golf, but my heart told me to go for the Alfa. Seeing this video helped me realize that I've made the right choice and that the better car isn't always the car to buy, so thanks for this video. And I hope you think about doing more video's with your son.

Shame you didn't have the weather on your side....I have the Alfa and in the dry it absolutely flies (I'm 52 by the way). Alfa give you an extra deposit allowance if you work for the NHS too...hence we're on our 4th!

Nice video - it would be the GTI for me all day long as I've always enjoyed the package they offer! I could only afford a 2 year old GT TDI Golf when I was 22 - a £30-35K GTI would have been way beyond me (almost still is haha)!
I'm a month in to owning my first Alfa, the Guilietta Veloce 2.0 JDTm-2. 170 bhp as standard but soon to be remapped to 215. Such a fun car to drive and beautiful to look at in Rosso Maranella. I wish I'd bought one long ago. Great review, I've been looking for an unbiased comparison with one of the Alfa rivals, like the Golf. Just goes to confirm what I thought: the sensible choice will always be the Golf, the heart will always choose the Alfa
Should have gone for the multiair 1.4 170, like I did, with a much lighter nose than the heavy diesel engine, handles much better, doesn't have the massive torque, but has plenty in dynamic mode.
Definitely prefer the alfa much more character

Great review, I'd have the Alfa all the way. I have a 145 Cloverleaf as my first car and I love it. The 2.0 TwinSpark engine is great. Charlie did raise a really good point about car keys and he is absolutely right, it's the one thing you take with you and reminds you of the car, and it should be special. The 145's key is an simple red one but it does trick and stands out haha
Ps: Could you test a 145? (or any Alfa of that period). 90's cars don't get much love on RUclips...

Also enjoyed the father and son drive and chat. I hope it was the camera rattling in the Alfa? It's a pity that you did not have a DSG GTI to make it more fair. The interior of the Golf and the Alfa is night and day though Harry, the switch gear and the quality of the plastics. Something I have learnt over the years is that one cannot really take a car for a quick spin and come to a conclusion about it, you have to live with it - learn it. Your son has spent a lot of time in the Alfa and is familiar with it, but not with the GTI. Keep up the good work though, always enjoy the videos.
I have owned many cars over the years. I am just shy of 40 years old so I still want to enjoy my driving as I do lots of it. I test drove both new and used versions of these alone with the Renault Megane RS just a few months ago. It is a second car so really wasn't too fussed about practicality or gadgets. Needless to say, I have owned an Alfa Giulietta Cloverleaf now since then. I liked both the Golf and Megane UNTIL I drove the Alfa. The difference is immense straight away. The Alfa was just so much fun and had so much character that I couldn't stop smiling after the test drive. The Golf was nice but you could fall asleep driving it as there was no real enjoyment, it was just nice is about as much as I could say. The same with the Megane but the Megane felt really flimsy all over.
If you want to enjoy driving avoid a German car (I have owned many in the past) and get something with some passion. The Alfa has quite a few quirks (such as struggling to get to the handbrake when the driver armrest is down!!!) but even knowing this, I could never choose a Golf or Megane over the Alfa. I even test Drove an Audi TTS and that again was just too sensible, there was no sense of fun.
You can see it in the presenters faces that really they both love driving the Alfa.
Driving a car should be a pleasure and that is exactly what Alfa Romeo designers care about most, and it shows from the minute you turn the key.
What a cracking video, as petrol heads we've all had a lot of cars i'm no different, im 54yrs old an owned 3 Golf's all GTI's in the 80's, however, after owning one Alfa I fell in love & back then they were unreliable, & that's being kind. But, over the years they have improved beyond belief, we had a 146 in the 90's best car ever, drove it everyday for 12 weeks 240 miles daily, it never failed me. Now we have a Giulia quadrifoglio, & our beloved Range Rover has blown a gasket, & we're going to buy another Alfa a Giulietta, 1.4 Multiair as our youngest son has one & its a scream to drive. Imagine a 1.4ltr going to 60mph in 7 seconds & a top speed of 135mph, mad simply mad.

I bought my Mark V Gti new a long time ago and it was a revelation. A car for all seasons, a car for all opportunities. I bought it when I lived in Germany and it could be let loose on the Autobahns, I’ve driven it in the Alps and on long, fast trips across Europe. I also towed a 6.2 metre trailer sailer long distances and taken five people away on trips. It’s the car I drive to the shops. The performance and usability are first class, the practicability is a huge bonus. I’ve also got a Boxster that I’ve had for a couple of years longer than the a Golf but A to B the Golf is probably quicker because it’s just so easy to get the performance onto the road. Best of all is it’s the perfect Q car. The public at large just see a hatchback, those in the know see something completely different. I’d love the Alfa but I don’t think that I’d have kept it or it would have kept me smiling half as long as the Golf has.
Imho a Golf is a temporary ownership until the next one comes out, whereas with an Alfa there is a bond created, I always end up falling in love with them and selling never even crosses my mind. A VW is a well built disposable item, but the flawed Alfa Romeo, you fall in love with, period.
Late to this video, but I'm driving a 2011 Giulietta QV, which my wife and I bought new, and I LOVE IT! Looked at a Golf GTi at the time and decided that the Alfa was the choice! Haven't ever regretted it! So much fun, and I'm 56!
I’ve got the exact same Alfa Guiletta Veloce in that beautiful matte grey. It’s a fabulous car. Having driven with a BMW 435i for a coulpe years and switching to this Alfa. I can say that the Alfa has so much more character. When you drive the Alfa it’s an event. I’ve driven my baby to 235km/h in the pouring rain and it was fine. Be aware tho, this Alfa is crazy. But it’s so much fun and looks great. Parking at Bondi beach in the matte grey with everyone looking is just so cool.

I have Guiletta QV line TCT 2.0 and love it apart from the speedo position which I hate!
When driving around town where speed is lower and steering wheel movement more pronounced, the legal speeds are obscured by the steering wheel, this is particularly an issue on roundabouts and could have been totally avoided by swapping the Speedo and rev counter around.
P.S. I am now retired and wouldn't dream of going back to VAG

Great review Harry and you now have a new subscriber!!! I've got a Polo GTi which is due for an upgrade in four months. I've been looking at an S3 and Golf R although thats the upper price point...I've been into Alfa twice previously and left without one, after seeing that Giulietta though, it might be third time lucky. The Magnesia Grey looks the business.
With 8k difference you could uprate the turbo to give 350bhp from the Alfa and a fair few more upgrades. Plus Alfa gearbox can be put into manual shift with paddles and it gives a huge performance difference as you can downshift like you would with a manual gearbox

Daniel Fl. Both the Golf and the Giulietta loose their value at the same speed, if you search about the second hand cars they are all around the same price in similar conditions, the newer ones are still more than €10-15000.
