Kia Hora Te Marino is a setting of a traditional Maori blessing. While the opening wordless chorus is evocative of the maritime imagery found in much Maori writing, the song also makes use of two traditional forms of oratory: the haka, a ritualistic choreographed group dance, and the whaikorero, a form of speechmaking used to unite the collective will of the people.
"I wrote Kia Hora Te Marino as a companion piece to Baba Yetu. The main melody is derived from the two main thematic fragments from Baba Yetu, but placed in reverse order. The piece also ends on the same soft wordless 'ooh' that begins the entire Calling All Dawns song cycle, thus making it a complete circle." - Christopher
Composed by: Christopher Tin
Performed by: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Lucas Richman (conductor), Jerome Kavanagh
Maori Haka performed by Ben Mullon, John Mullon, Jordan Young and Tangaroatuane
Produced by Gregg Greenwood

Being a Maori myself this is a very special song to me
Kia Ora!
I don't speak maori but if try to translate name to me it means Greeting to the ocean. Since you're maori can you translate name of song in english.
It is a very beautiful song. ^^
He Brazilia ahau, kei te ako ahau i te reo Maori me nga tikanga.
Kaua rawa e ngaro o koutou tikanga Maori whakamiharo, e whakahīhī ana ahau kua whai waahi ahau ki te ako i te reo Maori, kare e roa ka ngana ahau ki te ako i te HAKA.
@@raughboy188Kia ora! "Hora" means to spread, and "marino" is used for a calm and tranquil ocean, or for peacefulness and tranquility. I think, given the rest of the waiata, that the first line "Kia hora te marino" means "Let peace spread".
For any other music harmony enthusiasts out there: Can we take a moment to appreciate that the beautiful key modulation at 1:18 is just an abrupt drop DOWN a semitone? No pivot chords, just suddenly we've gone from G major to F#. I wouldn't have guessed this could work so well... I've always loved this track but that's really the "wow" moment for me. Nice to see this new visualization with it.
Yeah it's pretty awesome imo too. But it also signifies a change in the music I think. After that comes a recitative like part, so I think it helps build up the tension.
Man I wish I could do key changes like that
It is very creative and does sound great, BUT it does kinda sound like a new song comes in haha. Very unique though!
I definitely feel the presence of Baba Yeta. So l looked up the meaning of Hora Te Marino, "May peace be widespread" It is a timely message!
the ending of this piece is literally the beggining of baba yetu
@@loudamir7390I was about to say this! I listened to them back to back last night and discovered it by accident
I love the men’s exclamations. They give me a feeling of safety. They also remind me of the Polynesian friends and people I love so much
I've never seen water more fluid than this
News flash! Water becomes more watery.

He's talking about the flow of the composition along with the visuals
@@AinzWoolGown I know and I agree 🤣
@@rwamvby2709
Oh sorry, I smelled sarcasm on your previous comment
@@AinzWoolGown It's okay.
It is interesting how you can hear Baba Yetu haunting this piece.
It is nice to see comments on this time.
Kia Hora Te Marino is bestially in the top echelon of Tin's songs.
Baba Yetu, Mado Kara Mieru, Temen Oblak, Kia Hora Te Marino, and Waloyo Yamoni are all competing for best in my mind, depending on the mood.
Kia Hora Te Marino has no down, has no periods where I find myself waiting for when it 'gets to the good part' as happens in Waloyo Yamoni.
Just lovely every second.
Thank you for making these compositions Christopher Tin.
This is my favorite song on the whole album. I always say that, even though I'm not a Kiwi, New Zealand is my "heart home", and I love to hear Te Reo Maori. Combine that with these beautiful overhead ocean shots -- just stunning.
Kia ora chris !! Ee love this song as kiwi 2024 !!
Being from NZ and part Maori, its so cool to hear this!
Thank you so much for letting the Johnson City Marching Band use this song in our season this year. It sounds really good so far!!
2:04 i absolutly love the power of all the voices sing together
Bravo....another magnum opus to rank with Baba Yetu,Sogno de Volare,Wayolo Yamoni, thank you for your creativity and your video team with a matching awesome video. Thank you.
Thank you!
This is one of my favorites from Calling All Dawns, and a perfect ending to the piece!
One of my favorites! An I love how the tag at the end loops back to "Baba Yetu" - when I play my CD on Repeat, it just flows seamlessly round and round. Bravo maestro!
I can feel the ocean water spitting all over the body and the people around me singing joyfully to explore the unknown world.
Essa música faz bem aos olhos, aos ouvidos, ao coração e à alma. Que Deus abençoe sempre a esses artistas maravilhosos e ao Sr Maestro Tin. 😍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🙏

He Brazilia ahau, kei te ako ahau i te reo Maori me nga tikanga.
I love how Calling All dawns is about the cycle of day and night, of birth and rebirth. It's like it's an ode to life itself with birth, death, and rebirth. Then The Drop That Contained The Sea is about water of course, all the different ways Water is used and all the different things it means to different people throughout the world and across time. To Shiver The Sky of course being about the heavens from our looking up and wondering what was out there, to the dream of flight, as well as the great strides along the journey there and the setbacks, to now it being the new frontier to explore. I'd love for another album about the earth so that we could have one for the earth, one for the seas, one for the heavens, and one for life, but I'd also just be curious to see where Christopher goes next, even if it's not this "genre."
Also I came here 2 hours after this new version dropped by sheer coincidence???
Great! piece of music. One of my favourite song is Baba Yetu 'The Lord's prayer'.
Está música e baba yetu são perfeitas
Somebody pls make A 1 hour loop of this song for me
It help me with my Mental Health....And brings me peace...
Wooooow 😍
I like it

❤️
That sneaky Baba Yetu at the outro
oh heck yeah its not as good as waloyo yamoni as a finale but its great in its own way and wraps up calling all dawns quite wonderfully :)
Thanks!
Omg vad cute sång sou cool
this makes me want to book a flight to Palau and do a photography project
Me gusta mucho esta canción. La mejor forma de cerrar ese álbum.
RUclips why did you not let me know this was out????
I love this song, it's really beautiful. The one minor criticism/question I have: isn't wh in maori supposed to be pronounced like f in english
Ideal main theme for Civilization 7
What words? None. The soul knows! Wonder! :D
Chris seems like a viable candidate to take over the Avatar sequels in lieu of the late James Horner.
Although I've heard rumor that Graeme Revell is doing them. Which I approve of also.
Oh Yes Please, make that happen!
😄❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
1:17 sounds like the main Lilo & Stitch motif from the original movie and the sequels
#tinforgreatmusician
Do we all agree?
Was it intentional to see a bird in the waves flying upwards towards a moon at 0:30?
It sounds familiar, the way the words are said makes me think it's somewhere in Oceania. I can't place it but is it from that region?
I get the Hawaiian vibe to be fair
Maori
@@eagles051387 It's Maori, so from New Zealand. This song is also from Calling All Dawns, from 2009. But no worries. I feel bad for correcting people and maybe I am a jerk for doing it but I wouldn't want people yelling at you more for thinking the song's Hawaiian.
@@jeremy1392 Thanks for the education :) never been to New Zealand but hear its beautiful :) Thanks for the clarification :)
that's swahilli too?
Its Te reo maori
You are an outlier, sir.
Kia hora te marino,
Kia whakapapa pounamu te moana,
Kia tere te rohirohi
Kia hora te marino
te marino ara
mo ake tonu ake
Ka tuhoa te ra,
ka wairara, ka hinga.
Hutia te rito,
Hutia te rito o te harakeke.
Kei hea te komako e ko?
Ki mai ki ahau
He aha te mea nui i te ao?
Maku e ki atu e,
He tangata (katoa), he tangata, he tangata ei!
Tihei mauri ora
A whiti whano hara mai te toki,
humie e hui e taiki e!
Yes, waiter, I will also order what he's having 1:35
Can I ask the meaning please?
Is water wet?
