You can have a reboot of Family Matters with a Caucasian family, they just wouldn't be the Winslow family. The original Wonder Years dealt with Kevin ARNOLD and his family, the reboot deals with the WILLIAMS family. See the difference?
It's already failing because they had to make it a ridiculous woke bullcrap show about how black people in the 60s were racially profiled. Every episode is that same premise
You know, I never watched the original Wonder Years. I always knew about it and it sounded good. I need to go back and visit that show. I think I'll do both at the same time, trading episodes!
So many middle-aged people here that can't get over the original Wonder Years. Grow up; do you complain about every Disney remake as well? Or just when it involves black actors?
I'm conflicted. A huge nostalgia is playing part in The Wonder Years, but this isn't it. Although that's not a bad thing I just don't understand why ride on the name? I guess purely for nostalgia, and Fred Savage is doing the narrator voice so that's going to be cool. Kinda exited just wish it wasn't called The Wonder Years.
Fred Savage is directing and producing this show, which is lovely, but Don Cheadle (♡!) is the narrator. I don't like or understand the reuse of the title either, but it probably makes marketing it easier.
First of all, imagine Family Matters, Sandford and Son, Jeffersons, Martin, A Different World, Fresh Prince, The Cosby Show, to name a few, got a reboot and made with an all white cast? It would never happen! The outcry of racism and everything else that would come with it, it could never happen. But secondly, and maybe more importantly, the shows that I mentioned were perfect the way they were. I loved them and watched them all, same as the original Wonder Years. If they tried to remake any of those and flipped races I would be just as upset about it. Quit touching classics, come up with original ideas, or don't make shows.
Anyone who actually wants to find a way to make changes in the world (be antiracist) should be willing to find ways to see things from a different perspective. I want you to imagine an original T.V show from the 80s, set in the late 60s and early 70s, which really captured life for a young black American boy, without following the traditional setup of a sitcom of that time. Now, imagine that 30 years after this show aired, it was rebooted with the SAME name, and followed a similar formula, but changed the color of the character's skin to white. Imagine the outrage.
It focuses on a different family than the Arnolds. This is not rocket science, they were not "blackwashed", it simply features a different family in the same universe.
Tryhard af. Not only did they raceswap it, they jammed it to the brim with preachy racial politics. Actually kind of insulting, when you think about it. The original had characters be their own characters and not political memes. Black people don't get that - along with not being their own original characters, they just get to be stolen white characters. LOL, leave our characters alone and go make something original that doesn't suck!
I was really excited for this since I grew up with the original. I could only make it through the first 2 minutes of being inundated with the subtly woke theme of race and racial issues before shutting it down. Does everything have to be a "teachable moment" these days or can we have one show that is just good and fun for a change? Sad times we are living in.

@@aka4god I agree. It should be part of the story when it is relevant. Unfortunately, they inundate you from beginning to end with these messages though. Funny thing is more often than not, these "safe" franchises end up flopping and only pissed off fans of the original and dont gain a sizable following with the new generation of fans.

I would be as critical if someone had taken the Cosby Show and did the same thing. It is lazy writing and production, more so given that Fred Savage has only found fame as '..that kid from the wonder years!'. It seems also that you are trying create an additional race argument where there is none. Am I not allowed to be critical of work that has black actors? Should I only be critical and judgemental if they were white only? Should only certain people play certain parts or should it be a free for all - that depends on the writer, the setting, the period, whether it adds to the art or becomes a distraction because of the zeitgeist. Oddly, it does seem that your focus in your argument is that I mentioned black actors and not the simple fact that it is lazy production and writing to just swap the actors around.
