Pole Spearing and then Losing a Large Ulua

- For a competition on Hawaii Skin Diver forum, I am restricted to hunting only with a spear instead of a gun. This morning, I found a large ulua that I speared only to have it take away the pole spear by breaking the clip that connected it to the float line. Argh.

one advantage of being deaf while being a diver.. you can have a conversation while under the water
Deaf and cant talk, but you are still living life to the fullest; I love it!
Yes, but I was able to find it by backtracking a ways with the GPS despite my dive buddy telling me it was hopeless and a waste of my time. Only took about 15 minutes. Found it laying on the bottom in about 70' of water. Having CLEAR waters to dive in is great!
@mitch5607
Hah, that's funny! Actually I'm using American Sign Language - Born deaf, can't talk. My partner that day is hearing, but I taught him sign language so we could communicate with each other. Damn useful for diving, that's for sure. Can communicate full concepts, thoughts, detailed information underwater or without needing to raise head out of water and spit out the snorkel.
Wow you are a real inspiration to every one btw I love the captions
thats great blessumm, you must feel right at home underwater where nearly everything is quiet. i love that feeling. you captured that sense of serenity in your video. thanks for sharing.
nice vid. i love how every dive and every situation is unique and quite a learning experience. i am still learning to pole spear. Good Luck.
Yes the great thing about ASL is you can communicate underwater. :) I just wanted to say your free diving is amazing. I hope one day I can be half as good as you. Thank you for your videos please keep them coming.
@alawaiman Line was not clipped to the rubber bungee. It was clipped to a metal clip that was drilled into the rear of the pole. Apparently the ulua bent the metal clip and got away.
Hey what brand of jetski sled is that? it looks very useful to tow like that!
you inspire me to free-dive more. i live in pearl harbor since a year ago and only started diving. plus navy wants to send me to scuba diver school so i have to prepare for that too
@Okinawapajero I am using the GoPro Herod HD in R4 mode with the headband strap.
what do you think about my ulua?
you should change the name of this clip to "Dude, where's my gun"
@blessumm i always thought about learning sign language for diving! that has to be so helpful when diving!
Hey man thats really cool, Im actually taking ASL 3 in High School. I spearfish a lot in the malibu area. Using sign language is so much easier and a lot more fun. I taught my friends some signs and we use it when hunting, spearfishing. Your grammar for english is amazing
@importv Believe it or not, I found my gun again by backtracking several blocks. Found it at about 80 feet deep next to a boulder. WHEW!
You dont know how to reply in comments do you?
@@morvid1968 I think that's how the old youtube was setup to do, all the replies end up looking like that now.
@twinsering Actually, it's not always quiet down there especially when the whales are around and singing. They are "loud" - I can feel their songs humming and resonating in my lungs at 100'+. I don't know if I'm just super attuned to vibrations to compensate for my lack of hearing or what... It does feel very strange and puts me on edge because it also feels like a powerboat passing by on the surface. :-O

@eclipseballer33
I was using a 8 ft Lance O'Hara pole spear. They are not cheap as they are hand built and considered the Cadillac of pole spears. Walmart sells cheapos for 20 - 30 bucks around here on Oahu.
the camo suite is it really for camouflage?
@twinsering Yes, I was born deaf. It's how I communicate.
@surferDude636
I was using a 8 ft Lance O'Hara pole spear.
What make pole spear is that???
or was that???
Cool video man! I think you should start doing spearfishing comics, it's funny how the words go with the video
thats a cool aspect of diving that most people wont ever get to experience, i wana learn to sign now
@HDYDthat
It's called a slip-tip. Basically it's a deattachable spear that is held on by a strong piece of string. After it penerates a fish, it slips off and "locks" onto the fish's body so it is much less likely to tear off and get away. They are difficult to use for pole spearing and almost nobody does this. You can google "slip tips" and buy one that fits your pole spear's shaft diameter. Not cheap, $60-$110.
u nv do equipment check
what kind of pole spear were you using cause im getting into spearfishing and i want a good polespear thats cheap but still works good, thanks and great vid
@iownudie108 Yes, I still do need to equalize. My ears are just like yours, except that my auditory nerves (between the cochlea and the brain) are messed up and don't transmit most of the signals. I broke my ear drums a few times surfing, free-diving and even by playing racquetball once. Since what little I could hear (very loud noises next to my ears) wasn't important, I had a procedure done 2 years ago to seal my ear canals and remove my ear drums. Now I need to clear less. It's great!
What Kinds Pole was it?
Great video!
That spear is similar to what some use for Halibut here in Alaska from a boat to bring the fish into the boat. @00-400 pound Halibut don't come in easy.
@blessumm What kind of camera are you using to record this? It almost looked like the camera is attached to your mask cause I see you were using both hands so you're obviously not holding it. Thanks, and nice breath hold.
Believe it or not, I did. My dive partner said I was a fool for trying to backtrack over such deep water to search for a lost gun. About 15-20 minutes later, I had it back in my hands from a 80' depth. Lose some, win some. :-)
I cant belive you lost your gun
@blessumm , Wow, dats the power they get I guess. Crazy..
did you get ur polespear back?
im new to polespearing but do you use oxygen or do you just hold your breath
pssss guys pls '' Be vewy vewy quiet'' haha :D this funny guy . nice vid and big fish
That he didn't kill haha...
Miswan
@importv Believe it or not, I was able to find the gun in about 80' of water after backtracking a few blocks despite my dive partner telling me it was "gonna be impossible to find it." Fortune does favor the bold.
Hy🖐🖐✋🖐
best diving video ive seen! :D
@CatahoulaMixx I estimated the weight at about 50 pounds.
@blessumm looks similar to a sea stinger lightning rod
paul you are awesome!
how on earth do you hold you breath so long, i woulda died around about when you found your clip.
are you free diving or scuba diving
You guessed it, BeanDip. Only 60-ish feet deep.
I'm a teacher so there's no such a thing as a dumb question in my book. :-) Yes, I still have to equalize. Almost everybody who is deaf still has a space of air in in their ear plumbings that becomes pressurized when diving down (or flying). It is possible that there are those who are born with a completely mutated/deformed inner ear that's missing that space of air, and therefore would not be subject to pressurization issues but I've never heard of, or met somebody like that.
is tht a freakin ship or sumthin?
aww man I'm sorry I feel bad for you. I would be so angry if that thing swam off with my pole spear. that was a really cool video though. how deep was that, like 50 or 60? You did your best, that's all that matters
what happened to your gun
Did u really lose ur gun?
why dint you take the gun in the first place?
are you using sign language?
Its in the locker.
Welp that sucks you lost both of you guns
do you have to equalize when deaf? ,btw feel sorry for you...
props man ,
I think next time you can't rely on a clip on the rubber. You'll have to maybe clip it to a cord separately connected to the base of the spear. Who knows?
No ways!! Those guys needa be a stone shot if you gonna use a spear🤦🏾♂️😂
Bummers! Nice video though.
cool sign language
are u diving alone bro?
Did you not see his spotter throughout the vid?
did you find your gun, lol just kidding i read the comments.
cade a arbaleta cara n pode esquecer
Lost your speargun n your fish that sucks. Glad u found your speargun again.

Cuz if you evah going shoot one ulua you gotta make sure to stone da damn ting especially when using a tree prong or one pole spear, if not say by by fishy catch you next time you FAKA😂
Yup ur big knife *pulls out little can opener blade yup this should do .
dude that was fucking awsome :D
I like it because it was a great video, not because you lost the fish and your spear :(
Yeah that's why I hate tuna clips! I've lost one bouy and almost lost a second one today
Paul, get rid of that pole **** . Keep a spear gun with you always!
