Lord of the Rings: Gandalf: "What to do with the time that is given to us"

- Gandalf talking with Frodo in the Mines of Moria. One of the most beautiful parts of the movie, in my opinion.
Many times we wish our lives had been different and that we didn't have to face such difficult situations. We can't control all that happens to us or the outcome of all of our actions, but what we can do is decide what to do about the situation that we now are.
There is a great prayer that I use now and then to keep focused: "Strength to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change those that I can and wisdow to know the difference."
God this quote honestly keeps me alive
You got that right...I have health problems but I take comfort in the fact I never had to carry the One Ring in real life.
Amen to that. Grown man of 55 and it brings the hair up on the back of my neck and lump to my throat every time!! And faith and hope of course.
same man same
One of the most beautiful parts of this world, in my opinion.
and it's in the book! at least gandalf's part. The frodo 'I wish I never got the ring and that this had never happened' being quite a selfish reaction given that what has happened is integral to their history and he decided to go on this quest himself at the council of elrond. Honestly in the books he's a lot more committed to his cause, unlike the films; "I wish it need not have happened in my time", not yearning for his own selfish needs but for a peaceful world free from strife, in which to live. This is far less self-serving than the 'why did I have to get it' feel of the film dialogue and a lot of frodo's dialogue in the film, coupled with him falling over A LOT (it's excessive). Needless to say, Gandalf's response is virtually word-for-word and is one of the greatest lines of wisdom ever.
@@artistsometimes2729oh well said there. yes it is indeed selfish but part of being mortal is feeling and being cursed with selfishness which in itself is a beautiful thing to feel and recognize. When i have a responsibility befall me that i do not wish but knowing it benefits those around me i refer to this line and i ultimately am at peace with the responsibility knowing the peace it may bring. and i do the task to the best of my ability
Gandalf has become one of my main advisors at this point
Gandalf and Yoda for me.
@@IanIsrael him too, “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” One of the truest statements I’ve ever experienced.
Me too and Anakin saying The Sith Rely on their passion for their strength. They think inwards only about themselves. Jedi are selfless and care about others
One of the most beautiful and deepest quote for those that red tolkien
This film was released just 3 months after 9/11, a time when America needed to hear Gandalf’s words more than ever.
I just read about this somewhere, came to watch this scene solely because of that. Glad it was mentioned here by someone else, I was 2 years old when the towers got hit
I dont want to be like, a motherfucker but, your goverment made 9/11. Sorry
My boyfriend was down about the state of the world today. So I showed him this clip. He instantly smiled & it made him feel better.
Boyfriend?
@@JF-xm6tu A friend, who is male, is called boyfriend.
@@minhly650 nah that's not this this works
That sounds great. Glad you showed that to him. Peace be with you brother :)
Came here after hearing about Russia’s declaration of War, the Corruption of the Canadian Government, and the uncertain future that is ahead.
I know this isn’t encouraging by any means but this is the time where strong men must rise up and restore order. It’s the cycle of all things when things get difficult. I pray that we’ll never see such conflict at home but I also understand nature itself must require these things to flourish and to remind ourselves constantly.
I pray to you all and know I love you all so much.
I remember this to keep going forward
I think the only difference in this and the book is that he initially says something like "So do I, but that is not for US to decide..." meaning more that he himself is not certain that things will turn out well, but he believes that they were meant to be in this place, at this time, by powers other than evil. And that is a comforting thought.
Once I reconnected to my spirituality I understand just how powerful the Maier are in TLOTR mythos. It was JRR Tolkein inserting his own spirituality and love of fellow man and concern for the destruction of the modern world he lived in. Truly brilliant.
I rewatched this flim recently after 10 years. This line still hits
Profound words...focus on the goal in your life.
no, that's not, oh never mind...
I have seen this movie more times then I can count but only when someone really close to me is about to be taken way too soon this line hit me ... it also gave me comfort and courage to carry on
Beautiful...these words are so relevant when you consider the state the world is in right now ❤
Even moreso now lol
Fr. Mike had this quote in his homily a few weeks ago and it made me so happy. Something written by a lay catholic in a High fantasy book made it into a church sermon
years after a hard and chaotic time of trying to live my own in my late teens, intentionally launching myself away from under a fairly sheltered and protected life, and being altogether too lucky in support to grow forward from the resulting crashing and burning -- Gandalf's, "...and so do all..." might as well be, "and so do all people who grew up without worry but who suddenly end up with some first cruel taste of how hard things really are for most of the people of the world..." cathartic.
great post man well said
Seen and heard this thousands (yes, really) of times & it still gives me shivers.
How many thousands? I am working on a 100 thousand times because it makes me feel happy and not everyone is out to fleece me and that this sometimes crappy world is not so bad after all. Good still exists.

What a beautiful scene.
To quote the 13th warrior "Go hide in a hole if you want, it won't make a blind bit of difference, your fate is sealed". Vikings say it different apparently.
Makes me smile
One of my favourite scenes.
Someone is given ultimate power, and sees it as a curse vs power. A tale as old as time
Excellent comment. Thank you
This 0:12 to 0:29 speech came a couple months after 9/11 and it was as applicable to the US as it was for Frodo.
Frodo: "I wish it need not have happened in my time."
Gandalf: "So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Im just glad Ian McKellen is still alive
0:19 I think i might cry.
Praise the Lord for J.R.R. Tolkien for writing Lord of the rings and using it to evangelize the masses in a sneaky way through fantasy. Especially with this line. and there are so many others as well
Consider The one Ring - This Pandemic.
Covid is Sauron
Yeah Gandalf more than Sam
The music! 😭
What a great metaphor for Covid.
Then decide what you will do with the time given, and stop living in fear…
💚💚💚
Does anyone know the soundtrack that’s playing?
I believe it's "The Ring goes South".
I never understood why that would be an encourage thought
He says this: ”Besides there are other forces working in this world not only evil.”
Gandalf the maia hints that Frodo is aligned with those forces and they are stronger. Frodo was their chosen because they saw the good and uncorruptable spirit in him.
"all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us". To me that tells me we can either waste our lives away, or use the time that we have to be kind and encouraging to each other.
@@sigisoltau6073 to do what?
@@CapitanTavish I don't know. That's for you alone to decide. It's your life and time, so the decision is yours to make. No one can decide you should live, except you.
So? How you do want to live and spend the time you have?
