    Went in PC World once as needed some new fans for my case in a hurry.
    "Why would you need fans in a case?" said the confident young salesteam member. Slightly confused by such a question from a person who sold computers for a living, I replied "To cool the motherboard VRM's, chipset, the RAM, drives, to move heat aw..."
    "Motherboards all have their own fans" he interrupted.

      @thecanadianwill 8 лет назад

      Andrew Roby yeah but that's sooooo minor now and days as most things are made out of materials such as Kevlar and other materials that disperse heat off your components. most average computers only need 1 or 2 fans and your good unless you are running a high end monster like me in witch I go watercooled

    • @ybor363
      @ybor363 8 лет назад +7

      thecanadianwill Right, but he's not running a high end monster, so it's unnecessary. Even a $30 upgrade that isn't going to do anything then it's $30 wasted. I just hate seeing people throw money at unnecessary upgrades just for the sake of spending money & making their computer look cool.

    *To summarize*
    Liquid coolers are typically better but require more maitnence and have a higher risk of damaging if they leak also the cost to set up is typically higher.
    Fans are cheaper but even the strongest one is still slightly weaker than a mid teir liquid cooling rig. Easy to set up and replace by your average user.

      +Tobias L. If the pump fails(which will happen at some point) the liquid does not move, and your cpu overheats and breaks quick. With an air cooler if the only thing that could fail is the fan and if the fan fails you'll still have time to save your data and turn of your pc without it overheating.

    • @tobiasl.726
      @tobiasl.726 8 лет назад +15

      +R4MP4G3RXD Yeah this could happen over time. But actually i don't think this a problem. Everything that is mechanical will break sometime. You have to be aware of that when you buy something. But it will take a few years if you have a good product. So i'm fine with that. Also this will not kill the cpu. Cpus today won't die if the cooler does not work correctly. Even if you suddenly remove the cooler the cpu will clock itself down or just shut the pc off completly. So that is not really a big problem.
      But for the rest of the time you can have a silent but still overclocked system which will improve your work and gaming experience quite a bit. So i wouldn't really consider this as a downside.

      +Mark White I wanted to add some extra notes if possible. I also have water cooling for my CPU. The biggest downside and the most realistic is, that If you get a sudden shutdown, or power loss in your household, the CPU will and heat up like crazy since the heat won't be dissipated since the pump does not carry the heat into your radiator. Otherwise watercooling performs better then aircooling.

    As someone who actually manages a bunch of PC's, I would say that air coolers are the way to go for almost every situation, save for someone who really enjoys overclocking and such (I liquid cool my home PC).
    The Cooler Master 212 EVO does a great job, even out in the plant where it gets over a 100 degrees Fahrenheit (I add another fan for those rigs). I will accept the Intel stock fan for admin computers, but any workstation, or even basic i7 exec build gets a 212 EVO.
    Consumer AIO's are great for guys who coddle their PC's, but if you want to set it and forget it, get a good air cooler. The Noctua 14S or Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3 are wonderful. One can never go wrong with a Cooler Master 212 EVO.
    I would also say that cases matter quite a bit. A good case does wonders, and all cases benefit from more fans. Throw a few Scythe Gentle Typhoons or Noctua NF-12's in your case and all temps will decline. Even stand-alone servers perform dramatically better if they can turbo all the time with a good case kitted out with all fans (rack-mounted machines are fine, but those garbage tower servers often have thermal throttling).
    I would recommend after-market air coolers to all but the most committed enthusiasts, and if you are building a random computer for a relative, NEVER put a liquid cooler in there. NEVER.

      I use water - and I have never coddled my pc. Wasn't really anymore or less difficult to install as a beefy air cooler (less actually - working around a large cooler sux, IMO), and it is basically set it and forget it (was for me, anyway - AIO).
      To each his own.

    • @GarrySkipPerkins
      @GarrySkipPerkins 8 лет назад +1

      BINARYGOD I agree to each his own (I currently use an H80i gt, and at one time had a custom water loop), but many people are fine with something like a Cooler Master 212 Evo. Furthermore, if one is not overclocking, most small tower coolers are more than adequate.

    • @xBINARYGODx
      @xBINARYGODx 8 лет назад +3

      yes, depending on location on earth, if overclocking past 4.5, then water - is my personal rule. Otherwise, not that big air, or hell, that abomination that comes with the cpu is ok (I mean, ok, it is not, but for an average joe or grandma...)
      :-)

      dont listen to that evaporating shit. Only happens to low end watercoolers. An AIO isnt like a water loop. No managing, the water is in already, and also, its sexy. How to install: Put your fans on the radiator in a pull, push, or buy 2 extra fans for push/pull (Recommend pull, best for keeping dust out) install that shit to your top, front, rear, wherever youre able to fit two 120mm fans (i belive h100i is 240mm), obviously actually install it, and youre good to go

    • @KrKrypton
      @KrKrypton 8 лет назад +1

      +Nerevar22g The liquid used in AIO's should be non-conductive. Even if it's distilled water, it's still non-conductive. There are desktop computers out there that are submerged in liquid to cool everything, with no special work done to any part of the computer, and they work by using a non-conductive liquid.

    Just to add one thing, AIO coolers cannot evaporate. Even if they try to, it would condensate inside the tubes and then go back into the loop.

    Unless you're aiming for the "overclocking champion of the world" there is no need for liquid cooling. Unless you just have to have it. Aircooled systems on a moderate overclock will always be more quiet.

    I would prefer a 120mm aio over a quiet air cooler. My fear is the leakage but my pc does get hot. So when I use afterburner it gets really hot. That’s from the GPU not the CPU correct?

    I've used AIO for every build I've ever done.
    Why?
    Cardioid microphones in a home studio. AIO is FAR more quiet than any air cooler I've heard.
    As to everyone worried about leaks: it is so bloody rare as to be a non-issue. Plus nine of ten use nonconductive liquids. So yeah.
    Thinking of doing a hard line custom loop on this next build, but may hold off.

      Also, if an Aircooler fan breaks, the cooling tower itself still works and provides passive cooling, just without the added airflow. If a watercooler pump breaks, the entire system doesn´t work anymore.

      Yikak4 well. id say wait till your stock heatsink starts to fail, then spend some 30-40$ on a good aftermarket. intel stock heatsink that comes with the cpu is quite trashy imo. the plastic parts that bolt into your mobo have some worst design.
