Are you starting to watch the show?
Right after Stannis walked in and they had a civil discussion about how Stannis would take the throne with Renly as hand and heir. Together with Rob they marched up to Kings landing and killed everyone and they lived happily ever after
He burns people
That just eliminates your reputation
@@ishanpekamwar9633 Only because this burning gave him some strategic advantage. Basically, if this was a game of crusader kings 3, he switched faiths and was now investing heavily into county conversion as soon as possible so that his vassals would fall in line and give him the troops he needed, achieving the trait "zealous" and gaining piety from executions.
In all seriousness, the whole "burning unbelievers and getting away with it" part of game of thrones struck me as odd for the current cultural context of game of thrones. My guess, however, is that dragonstone's long history with the targaeryans and dragonstone's unique position in westeros history allowed them some level of independence from the major faith in westeros, which led to an increasing amount of foreign influence, in particular the worship of the fire god r'hllor.
Stannis didn't need the whole realm to agree with him, he merely needed enough men to assault kings landing, get rid of the lannisters and seize his claim on the throne, which was his by the rights of the current kingdom.
Whether this was wise in the long run, is a subject of debate, as Stannis severely lacks one thing (this is true for the books and for the show, regardless of what stannis stans might irrationally think.): the capacity to empathize with his subjects and the ability to put himself in their shoes, thereby accurately foreseeing how his post-usurpation would affect his vassals' opinion of him.
Stannis needs to do a few things, as he himself discovered in the books. He now has to balance immediate tactical gains with future prospects. The "lord of light" has given him some clear advantages and proven functional methods, but his subjects grow increasingly wary (and weary) of him and his foreign priestess. During his march to winterfell, he is not as willing to burn his soldiers simply to get rid of the snow, knowing fully well it probably won't work anyway, and knowing that it would likely cause massive desertions or chaos in his ranks, not to mention dissent from the soldiers that used to follow renly and merely followed stannis because they felt they had no other choice now.
My guess for the books is that either stannis wisens up to what needs to be done and manages to find a balance between these conflicting things, or he will be consumed between them, with the real position of leadership then going to Jon Snow, presuming he will be brought back from the dead like in the show.
Stannis is a hated scum no one wants him.
And Tyrion became captain of the Kingsguard, and Cersei sold all her possessions and donated the proceeds to charity.
@@dandeleon2764Tyrion as the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard ? That's the funniest thing I heard today

@@NANINANI-cs6rn Tywin was a pretty poor commander compared to the likes of Robb, Stannis, Randyll Tarly etc
@@davidstephenson164 All that matters is who won though. Tywin won at the end of the day.
Renly was stupid and wasn't even the heir anyway, and Stannis was too pigheaded. Neither could have won.
Robb should've just sat back and see who won out of Renly/Stannis, and backed the other. Then destroyed the Lannisters. Even if they don't get separation from the South at least the Lannisters are dead and they can set up the same deal Ned had with Robert. Stannis was waaaay too preoccupied with Renly and Robb, when there was already someone ON the Throne in King's Landing.
@@NANINANI-cs6rn lmao, tywin is seriously an overrated commander
@@davidstephenson164 I mean, I think you forget that Robb is still young and had good advisors, such as Blackfish. He is still quite smart, at least for listening to them. And he actually has a great potential, but Robb's victories are not only his merit
Still cannot f*cking believe that the Northeners, Renly and Stannis could have teamed up together and make this war like a walk in the park and still ended up losing because of their stubborness. Tywin is so lucky on this honestly.
It was Renly that caused it, Stannis was the older brother and thus the rightful heir, if he could have backed his brothers play, they would have been victorious and he would have had influence over his brother. The North who both respected at worst would have been an ally. The Riverlands and the Vale would probably follow with what the north did and thus.. no more lannisters.. boo hoo.
Tbh the northerners are idiots
@@deanooooooo6496 Nope, the Tyrells don't want Stannis to be king obviously so they would side with the Lannister's obviously.
@@wannabeserpento99 that's idiocy though, no one trusts the Lannisters and never have, stannis may not be friendly but he's at least trustworthy, that was stupid writing.

Only after losing Renly did they moved on to the 2nd, lesz savory option.
Renly was dumb to not take Stannis's offer, he would've been the heir to Stannis anyways, joined Robb, and their combined forces would've annihilated the Lannisters.
Edit- I am basing this on Stannis's character in the book, not on the fanatic, child killer in the show.
I doubt the Tyrells would join the war to seat Stannis as king. Mace Tyrell only supported Renly so Margery can be Queen.
Stannis would have no doubt tried for a son
@situzifeng mace? really? loras and possibly olenna were the real leaders. loras the battle commander while olenna the true matriarch of the tyrells .

Important to bear in mind that Renly is offering the North what you might call a Dornish compromise: independent but not really.
@@yfhjojoNeither of them was the right king for Westeros. Too much of the dragon in both brothers.
Stannis and Renly being unable to come to an understanding ultimately doomed the 7 Kingdoms. They could have easily set it up so Stannis becomes the King, Renly is appointed to his seat on the small council, maybe even named Hand of the King. Renly becomes the heir to the throne and is named Prince. Margaery Tyrell is named Princess Consort and their children are the designated heirs to the throne. Robb Stark is offered the same deal he is given in this video. He continues to call himself King in the North but swears an oath of allegiance to the Baratheon's. Stannis is King, Renly has a larger voice in how the Kingdoms are run, Renly may also be king one day, the Tyrells remain in the fold, the North is given more autonomy.
None of that would have ever happened. Stannis was too arrogant and uncompromising to leave Robb the north. In the books he even threatens to deal with him next
@@dersuddeutschesumpf5444 Your absolutely correct.
Robb could never have taken the offer. He waged war on the premise of a free and independent North. Turning around and swearing fealty to a new King would've betrayed all the Houses who fought under him.

I’ve always liked Renly in the show. Genuinely smart and logical, at moments he and Tyrion seem to be the only ones who seem to understand and properly act on the gravity of their situations in Westeros. Kind and loving. Somewhat tactical, mostly in a political sense tho rather than a war-commander. And I just like the depth he adds. A family of war-lords and soldiers, and he sticks out as different, unique. And it happens to be his gift and curse.
it's for this reason why im actually kinda pissed off by how he was killed. I can respect the way Robb died. he was foolish and broke an oath and thought he could dine in the halls of a vile man whose he broke his oath with.

@@zacharyjackson1829 Damn right, shit was unfit for a man like Renly. Felt rushed, like they didn’t know how to kill him off right.
Sword swallower through and through
People tend to underestimate Renly. Mostly based on Donal Noye's quote about steel, iron and copper, that's a textbook example of unreliable narrator (as amply demonstrated by the fact that "true steel" Robert had been an atrocious king).
Reality is that Renly was a fine politician. He sat in the Small council for years, without having been fooled by Littlefinger and Varys. He had been the only one that gave the right advises to Ned (that spectacularly failed to discern friends from foes since the moment he left the North). He easily made alliances that would have made him invincible on the field. Not by chance, he had been the only claimant to the Iron Throne that had to be killed by a supernatural intervention. His position was too strong otherwise.
@@neutronalchemist3241 I actually really enjoy your interpretation. He WOULD be nearly unkillable in any other circumstance. @ben ben this is exactly what happened in the books when Victarion Grey took Moat Cailin to stop Robbs army from coming back up North. But also, the Starks are beloved by their bannermen because they're loyal to them, if King Robb let thousands of his subjects go under the yoke of the Iron Throne, none of the Northern Lords would respect him. Further, (again in the books) Robb isn't just fighting for the North, he's fighting for the Riverlands as well, Renly is making Robb give up the future breadbasket of his Kingdom.
JJR Martin made Renly to op. The logical thing for Renly to do would be to march on kings landing instead of waiting. I want to see a timeline where Renly and Robb both back Stannis, and at the point the Greyjoys would’ve had no choice but to stay neutral or join them as well. The Vale likely could’ve been convinced to join as well, and Dorne so it would’ve been a sweep with the most just king on the throne
Stannis is not the most just king.
This will never happen because Stannis is a mad king, he burns people and refused to make an alliance with Robb and Renly. Everyone hates Stannis and no one will serve him
It makes me wonder how things would have gone if Ned listened to Renly, just after Robert died
The offer is incredible from Renly, Robb stays King in The North, The North is now mostly left alone from the south as long as they never take up arms against Renly and likely has their taxes reduced dramatically with the only condition being Renly is still above Robb
The show went downhill after they made the deal and they just lived in peace

Still crazy how Renly Baratheon had both the North(+by extension the Riverlands) and the Reach backing his claim yet was the first of the five kings to die.
That was crazy. However in the books Renly stupidly rushed ahead with only his knights to confront Stannis at Storm's End leaving his vast host of infantry and all his supplies behind.
Renly with only his knights vs Stannis with his entire army would've been a much fairer fight.
Stannis would probably have some trap planned for all that cavalry, so Renly might have died first anyway even if the shadow assassin ploy did not work.

Tbh this was a pretty good deal and likely had some decent wiggle-room to give the North additional negotiated perks. The Starks never hated the Iron Throne, they just knew that the Lannisters were out to get them and felt they had to do something to stop then. Putting a new king on the iron throne would destroy the Lannisters, put them back on good terms with King's Landing, avenge their father's killer, and probably a few pre-negotiated political concessions from Renly (or Stannis) to boot. Don't forget that the North becoming independent meant they still had to ward of Greyjoy raids and cover the Night's Watch while maintaining a presence on their southern border without the backing of the rest of the empire.
Stannis was an absolute moron to not accept renly as King and join with Robb and him.
Stannis could have just encouraged Renly to fight on the field same as Robb and once Renly dies, Stannis could have been King.
But Stannis was the elder brother, by rights he was the heir and Renly a usurper
@HeirofcIreland play the game and win. Stannis didn't play the game. If he did perhaps he'd be King.
@@Golgari213he played but by his rules how does he even die?
@@mcbdllc2848 hopefully he ends up in a better place than in the show. I'm really rooting for him.
I feel bad for Cat. She sacrificed a lot for her children but her children always mentions their father not her.
It wasn't uncommon in the medieval era. Realistically a landmass the size of westeros would have an emperor - a king of kings.
Ren and Rob marriage to unite the lands 😂
"My son has no interest in the Iron Throne."
*Renly takes a slightly audible sip of his chocolate milk, delaying his response to allow the slightest hint of tension, creating a sense of relief and friendliness when he finally replies.
"No cap, fam', we should collaborate."
Had Renly recognized the merit of Stannis as king, with himself as his heir - this whole thing would have turned out quite a bit better for him.
In an alternate timeline Renly accepts Stannis' offer then Robb sides with them against the Lannisters. In this same timeline Robb doesn't feel the iron Islands would be necessary and never sends away Theon thus Winterfell is never occupied and Robb is never drawn north. Robb also honors his oath to the Freys. Brann is still drawn north by his green dreams eventually making his way to the 3 eyed raven and Arya still ends up on her journey that ends up in Braavos. No purple wedding no red wedding.
I wonder how much crazier and different things would have turned out had it went that way?
Ned Stark honored this oath and supported Stannis. Renly didn't.
He could’ve just let the north be entirely independent with a treaty of peace between them and it would’ve been more or less the same, and if he did want them too join at some point he could write in the treaty when the war is over Robb’s future children would bind their houses by wedding his children. Easy
It is not the seven kingdoms without the North. This is why I believe in an alternative universe of game of thrones that Gantry should have sat on the throne with a marriage to Sansa Stark.
She was foolish and so was ned! Renley was offering her a beautiful deal
