    One theme you'll see throughout the series is that Lucifer never lies to anyone except himself. The "except himself" is a BIG part of his character development over the seasons.

      funnily enough in this episode i spotted a "kinda lie", he said something like "i chose who gets punished in hell" , however as we later learn thats not really true, people are creating their own hell, its their own regrets that send them there, not really their deeds as cain pointed out he would go to heaven as he was free of regrets (lucifer corrected him on that, but thats a different story)
      mind you i don't think that was intendet on the writers part, its basically a throwaway line in one of the first episodes of the series so it not having canon effects in season 3 is logical, still, technically he lied there

      @@deathking1019 after rewatching the exchange went something like (was cut a bit awkwardly in the video here, didn't get the exact words of chloe) chloe:"you don't get to decide who gets punished and how" followed by lucifer saying:"thats exactly what i do.", but if they left hell (or never got send there) he wouldn't punish them, he only punishes those that got send to his domain, therefore he is not the one deciding who gets punished but only how. if you run a prison and a judge sends someone there the judge decided they need punishment, you are just enforcing it. mind you its such a minor detail, pretty sure when this line was written no one was thinking of how hell would be described to function 2 seasons later and in this case i would call that fair, as it truly is just a funny throwaway line that no normal person will ever remember years later.

      @@houseofaction again though, chloe said he does not decide who gets to decide who gets punished and how, he said he does, that however is not true.
      -
      he gets to decide HOW people get punished, yes, however he does not decide WHO gets punished. unless being in hell but not tormented is an option, which does not seem to be the case as even he himself was tortured when he was "just visiting" that means he does NOT decide who gets punished. People send to hell get punished, but he does not send them there, they themselves do by having regrets, or at the very least they themselves are what finally keeps them from leaving.

    _"Is punishing the guilty justice? Or is it revenge?"_
    Justice is not about punishment. Justice is about trying for equality that is not absurd. Everyone on the planet removing their eyes and genitals because blind people and eunuchs exist would be absurd equality.
    Punishing the "guilty" is about practicality (teaching them a lesson) or about revenge (they've violated your boundaries so you reciprocate to "nullify" the violation, "even the score").

    • @Fordo007
      @Fordo007 4 года назад +6

      Justice is revenge, the difference is just semantics. A murderer being executed or slapped on the wrist is still the same, a punishment is being given to him. The reason is because he killed someone. If the punishment is given by a dispassionate executioner or the victim's angry spouse... the result is the same. Justice and revenge are the same, we invent distinctions to make justice seem better and revenge seem worse... when ultimately they are the same.

      @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 4 года назад

      @@Fordo007 "Murder" is a myth.
      And I just explained the difference between justice and revenge; justice is the pursuit of an equality that is not absurd. Revenge is not.
      Revenge is basically retaliation; you have moved against me/us to such an extent that I'm/we're now going to move against you as much or far worse until I/we *feel* satisfied (even if others deem it absurd) or something interferes.
      Punishment can be about teaching a lesson or about revenge.
      I'll illustrate:
      *Police officer:* _"This is your third time caught drinking and driving? That's it. It's revenge time!"_
      *Drunk driver:* _"Huh? What, no one got hurAAGH!"_ (gets beaten to death)
      *Police officer:* _"That'll teach him to drink and drive."_
      Is that punishment? Yes. Revenge? No. Justice? Definitely no. Teaching a lesson? Only in the sense that other people will have views about the event.

    • @nemonomen3340
      @nemonomen3340 4 года назад +5

      @@Fordo007 While you are basically right, it's a bit more nuanced. The "justice system" is simply organized revenge on a larger social level. This means the justice/revenge is usually less personal and more consistent.
      However, It's also worth considering that the definition of justice may be poorly explained by using any "justice system" as an example. If it's a subjective definition or even if true justice does not exist in any practical sense, I still think it's useful to keep the concepts separate. That's the purpose of semantics.

    • @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
      @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 4 года назад

      @@nemonomen3340 Not really, the justice system is about social equality, not social revenge. Even the death penalty is more about sending a message than society "getting the satisfaction of revenge".
      Justice does exist in the practical sense; it is the *pursuit* of an equality that is not absurd. It exists just like fishing and reading and jumping and philosophy and bodybuilding exist.

    • @nemonomen3340
      @nemonomen3340 4 года назад

      @@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps You're absolutely right that the death sentence is about "sending a message" but when an individual gets their "satisfaction of revenge" it is also about sending a message. That might not be the _conscious_ goal of the individual, but that is why vengeful attitudes naturally evolved.
      You don't steal from the guy who broke the last thief's kneecaps just like you don't steal in an area that has an effective justice system.
      It's interesting that you chose here to define justice as "the _pursuit_ of an equality that is not absurd" rather than simply "equality that is not absurd." The difference is vital and under the former definition, I would agree it exists practically. I, however, prefer the latter definition as it is how the word is generally used.

    WOW i just realized that you couldn't haved notice it !
    Back when it first aired, i was confused on how this dude was, because they recast the role of Trixies dad after the Pilot, i went back to last episode and yes, they put the new actor in instead.
    The szene at the school is a perfect example, he is either rotoscoped in the foreground or alone on screen xD

    In this world I would say that seeing Lucifer's 'demon' face is enough to make anyone believe him, but it also terrifies the person seeing it and makes them go crazy.

    In the later seasons they explore the mechanics of Hell and punishment therein. They approach it in an interesting way and one I haven't seen in other media, though it could certainly be out there.
    As for, "When will Chloe finally believe him?" Well, it is pretty unbelievable to be fair. Even for people of faith, they usually imagine god and angels and demons in another plane of existence like heaven or hell. Accepting that not only is all that real but it continues to interact with the human world and plane just, whenever they feel like it, is a paradigm shifting thought. Plus, being in LA they're surrounded by performers and 'movie magic' and such, which is far easier to accept than being acquaintances with literally Lucifer.

    Lucifer is loosely based off the DC comics character of the same name in Sandman comics/graphic novel. So because of that is why he appeared in Crisis as a little Easter egg referencing the fact they got their inspiration from DC’s Lucifer. However the Crisis cameo takes place during the 5 years he was here on earth before the pilot of the show which is interesting cause no one ever references crisis (obviously cause it didn’t happen yet in real time) but it’s still an intriguing way to put him in the DC timeline

    There's some fascinating theological and philosophical questions brought up by watching this show, but for a lot of the continuity struggles within the writing you just have to "go with it." Because the main thing about this show is that it's fun (with occasional darkness that's also terrific). Tom Ellis is what makes this show so alluring because he just has so much fun with the character, but trust me, the other characters get more and more interesting as well. I hope you like it!

    on the topic of how he relates to the greater DC multiverse...in the comics, Lucifer shaped the multiverse, and later settled on one Earth (presumably Earth 0) and opened Lux. in the show, they're in the Arrow multiverse, in their own universe, separate from the other shows.
    and about"infinite punishment"...in both the comics and show, it's explained that people only go to Hell because they feel they deserve to, and they stay there as long as they feel they deserve it. very few have ever left.

      @@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps no. in both the comics and the show, Lucifer is the hero, fighting against his father's tyrannical rule, and at least in the comics, Yahweh isn't depicted as a sadist, but as an out of touch father who doesn't get it, and tries to do what's best for everyone, but doesn't know what that is. he considers undoing everything, do that nothing ever existed, at one point, to erase suffering, but Elaine talks him out of it, and he steps down as God so she can take his place.

      @@nonplayablenpccharacter It doesn't really matter. You created Hell or you are the warden of Hell, either way, since "deserving" is a myth, you are having people tortured for "feeling they deserve to be" for "as long as they feel they deserve it" for what amounts to your personal satisfaction. And since "very few have ever left" and we're on a planet which has seen 3.4 million years of Stone Age and 6,000 years of post-Stone Age, for how long have the majority of "inmates" been there now, do you think?
