- The second video in a series of three, documenting my winter backpacking journey over 8 days on the Kintyre Way. I set off solo on the 1st January 2023 on a self-supported journey using a tarp and bivvy bag for shelter. The videos capture many beautiful and challenging moments as I pushed my body and mental game to their limits. I planned this journey because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and build some resilience and the trip delivered!

I haven't watched all of this video yet and this is the first one of yours I've seen but I would like to know, is it safe to drink the water from the rivers you come across?
Hi Marianna. Thanks for the subscription and question. All the water I drank on the trip was either filtered through a Lifestraw bottle or boiled for 1 minute. The Lifestraw filters out 99.9999% of water-borne bacteria and has a carbon filter to deal with pesticides and herbicides. For much of the walk I was in lowland areas near farms, so that level of filtering was important to me. Some are happy to drink water from high altitude streams in Scotland because the chances of it containing harmful bacteria are much smaller and sometimes I have in the past. Now it's really easy to bring the Lifestraw, so I'm always covered. I suspect it would take a nasty run of bowel issues for some to take the more cautious approach!
