The Kintyre Way | 8 Day Winter Backpacking by Tarp: Part 3/3
The last video in a series of three, documenting my winter backpacking journey over 8 days on the Kintyre Way. I set off solo on the 1st January 2023 on a self-supported journey using a tarp and bivvy bag for shelter. The videos capture many beautiful and challenging moments as I pushed my body and mental game to their limits on the beautiful and remote peninsula. I planned this journey because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and build some resilience and the trip certainly delivered!

Backpacking the Kintyre Way | Solo Winter Tarping - 8 DAY KIT LIST
Просмотров 483Год назад
On the first of Jan 2023 I will be backpacking the Kintyre Way, one of Scotland's Great Trails. This video is the second in the series and covers my kit and food list for 8 days of entirely self-supported travel. I am not necessarily recommending the kit I am taking - though I do offer my thoughts on some of it - it's more a list of what personally works for me. The music comes from my friend S...

    I'm planning on doing this way this year or next, and huge thanks for this travelogue as there's so little information available for us wild campers! You're a brave man tarping in the winter Also, it's been a highlight watching you try and be positive about your dehydrated meals - I totally agree the beef and potato hotpot is pretty much the only palatable thing in the Expedition Foods series :) My personal recommendation is LYO's Penne Bolognaise. Their stuff is generally so much nicer than the other brands in my opinion

      Thank you for your kind comment! Haha yes, some of the meals are awful. My favourite so far is Real Turmat's Spaghetti. Best of luck for your journey when you go. I feel the place pulling me back, almost like I have unfinished business there. Beautiful peninsula.

    I must be the only one wondering, what happened to the poor dug? You really shouldn't tie up other people's free roaming dogs to a fence post in the middle of nowhere it's incredibly silly and gives the farmer a good excuse to hate walkers, I would of just let the dug do as it does and find its own way

      I don't think it was in the middle of no where, it was back at the house, just not in the courtyard where he was getting attacked!

    • @ournaturalhabitat
      @ournaturalhabitat Год назад

      It's perhaps not entirely clear in the video although I did try to be clear that I tied the dog up right next to the house. The alternative was letting it follow me onto neighbouring land unleashed around sheep and goats which seemed less kind and unpredictable. Tricky situation really. I couldn't risk letting it follow me 18km to the next town, because then what?

    I haven't watched all of this video yet and this is the first one of yours I've seen but I would like to know, is it safe to drink the water from the rivers you come across?

    • @ournaturalhabitat
      @ournaturalhabitat Год назад

      Hi Marianna. Thanks for the subscription and question. All the water I drank on the trip was either filtered through a Lifestraw bottle or boiled for 1 minute. The Lifestraw filters out 99.9999% of water-borne bacteria and has a carbon filter to deal with pesticides and herbicides. For much of the walk I was in lowland areas near farms, so that level of filtering was important to me. Some are happy to drink water from high altitude streams in Scotland because the chances of it containing harmful bacteria are much smaller and sometimes I have in the past. Now it's really easy to bring the Lifestraw, so I'm always covered. I suspect it would take a nasty run of bowel issues for some to take the more cautious approach!

    That is a lot of stuff. If I was going to carry that much stuff I would go ahead and buy a 70l pack. Bigger packs are designed to carry more weight and will be more comfortable. Smaller packs are designed for less weight requirements. You should look at cutting weight by cutting redundancy. Two pots, two tarps? Smaller & lighter cook stove. There is a way to configure the larger tarp with a floor. Use clothes bag as pillow. Fire kit maybe reduce to a lighter & candle. Seems like way too much unnecessary stuff.

    • @ournaturalhabitat
      @ournaturalhabitat Год назад

      Hi Mike, thanks for the comment and your thoughts. It is indeed a lot of stuff and part of my intention with the trip was to refine my winter tarp system. The pack was uncomfortable for the first couple of days but I didn't notice it too much for the rest of the trip. As I said in the video, I've no doubt that a dedicated backpacking pack would be more comfortable. My thoughts post trip are that I can do away with the smaller tarp and second pot. I'll be changing back to a sawyer water purification system too as the lifestraw was convenient but not entirely fit for the way I was using water. Regarding the fire kit and pillow, these items weigh next to nothing so I am content bringing them for the extra comfort and firelighting backup. You make an interesting point about the stove. I like the Whisperlite because of its robustness and ease of maintenance in the field but I'm intrigued to look for something lighter and more backpacking specific. Cheers.
