    The D500 and D750 are designed for 2 different markets. Sports and wildlife the D500 is the better choice. You will get that extra reach with the 1.5 crop factor. For landscape and portraits it’s the D750 or any full frame camera. The 85mm lens for portraits is great, I love the compression and bokeh. The same lens on a crop sensor camera is 127mm…I need to stand 1 ½ times the distance from my subject now. I love my 20mm lens for landscapes, on a crop sensor it’s 30mm and many times I can’t step further back. I can go on and on with the plus and minus of both but again…..2 different cameras for 2 different uses.

      Good point Tony! Each camera is designed for different shooting needs.... And both have excellent IQ... Differences in IQ have become negligible to the average, and even pro users.

      It's easy to put it in those terms, but they seem a bit outdated. At ISO 3200 the D500 is NOT lagging behind when compared to the D750. The D500 does display more grain but color noise is well under control, moreover, the picture is NOT smudgy. With an APS-C sensor, I never shot over 1600 ISO and that was only when I really needed to, the results from the D500 at 3200 are extremely impressive. The D750 is not ahead by much if anything. Also, because it does not have a low pass filter a lot of the shots on the D500 are noticeably sharper than the D750.
      Lastly, you get a much more robust camera with the D500, better features, better construction, better ruggedness, hence, it is hard to say full frame is better with the release of the D500.

      I agree. The D750 does perform better, but from ISO 800 to 3200, it's only about a third of a stop and the D500 is a touch grainier but sharper than the D750. Color noise is negligible or less on both. At ISO 6400 that's when the D750 really shows off the 35mm sensor. However, I have never shot a wedding above ISO 1600 and that's my emergency setting, usually with flashes or strobes I don't go above ISO 800 so the fact that both these can do ISO 3200 and turn in a very acceptable and usable photograph make the D500 V D750 debate even bigger and as a photog and consumer, makes it harder to decide.
      Overall, however, you get more camera out of the D500 and that may be enough for some.

      +floex831, D750 has over a stop of noise advantage over D500 at lower ISOs as well, both according to dpreview samples and dxomark. And a smaller sensor with lower resolution won't produce sharper images.. even if D500 had the same resolution as D750 it would require 1.5 times sharper lens just to break even. What is possible is that D500 has more aggressive default sharpening than D750.

    • @floex831
      @floex831 8 лет назад

      Ozren B
      Oh and your link is set to fully lit, it selects the smallest image size available instead of the full image size.
      For a fair comparison, set it to low light results, drag the selected part of the image to a lower lit part because that where you're going to see the noise, and select FULL size image. because at the settings in your link, it doesn't give you the true results.
      When you click on FULL image, low light, and drag the selected part to a low lit area, you can clearly see that under stress the sensors perform very similarly. The D750 shows only about a third better of a stop better quality than the D500. Again this is from ISO 800 to ISO 3200, at 6400 the D750 crushes the D500 and below ISO 800, you're none the wiser. Even fully lit with the FULL image selected, the D750 is only marginally better.
      To make the decision even harder between these 2 cameras, the D500 is overall sharper at every ISO even if the D750 is a bit cleaner.
      This makes it even harder to decide which camera is best. With these results the only thing you're losing on is focal length at the wide end. As far as that whole DOF argument, if I showed you 2 photos one taken with a 35mm sensor and one with a crop sensor, I guarantee most people wouldn't be able to tell which is which.
      Hard to accept but the day of the 35mm sensor being much better is quickly coming to an end. Its all about preference now.

    Nikon D500 for Wildlife and sport. D750 for portrait. The Nikon D500 is really a little Nikon D5! The D500 is THE BEST APS-C CAMERA IN THE WORLD!

    For my needs I will stick to a DX and choose the proper lens for the job at hand. There is more to a camera than the size of the sensor.... The D500 choice over a D750 would be a no brainer for me. I know how to make the proper lens choices to get the photos and look I want/need from the DX body. Who cares is it is not the same lens I would choose to use on FX for the same look? I don't.
    "Oh look at my FX body.... is that the kit lens attached? Yea, but I have an FX body, DX Sux!" I want the bragging rights on the photos I create, not on the body I carry. ;)

  • @paulguy2545
    @paulguy2545 6 лет назад +2

    One of the reasons I can think of, that the D500 model’s images are sharper than from the D750… has to do with the D500 not having the Low-Pass Filter over its Sensor… so in this instance yes, Megapixels do not make very much difference between the two cameras if anything!
    However if the D500 (Cropped Sensor) was being compared to other Full-Frame Sensor models in their line-up Without that Low-Pass Filter, then this would be a different story! Its also down to Bokeh - (how much Background Blur) do you want in your Portrait Shots?! ... because with a Full-Frame body, you will get more of that from the Fast Lenses (50mm f1.4/1.8) for example, than on a Cropped Sensor camera!
    So it really comes down to what kind of photography you want to do!

    Well, I'm no professional but being that in the last 7 months I've spent enough money on bodies (enough to buy a D4s) for not doing my research before purchasing. I found myself in this dilemma myself. This time i did the research and chose to buy the D750. I know that the 2 DX cameras i purchased before the D750 could never compare to the D500, (D3300 & D5500) but it gave me a sense of what to look for in what I will be using my cameras for. Just for the record, The D5500 is not a bad DX camera. Might not have the speed or focus points, but the touch screen is 10x better than the D500. LOL. But with some very good & expensive glass on the 2 cameras I use the most (D750 D5500) I've learned that every camera has its purpose. I am happy with my choices as the both serve my purpose so as to say for anyone who is stuck with this dilemma, think of your purpose & how is it going to benefit you & your art. As for me, since i already had 2 DX cameras, i preferred my 3rd to be FX.
    PS. The quality of photos from the D750 are flawless.

    D500. I was a full frame snob for a few years but have just added a Canon 80D to my bag. Handles colour noise better than my ageing 5D 3 and 6D. That said, full frame all the way for bokeh....weddings, portraits etc. All cameras have their strengths and weaknesses :)

  • @vokso11

    Eric : The only thing that would make me jump on the D750 is the FX sensor . However sensor is not always everything. The D500 for the same price offer so much more: (Speed , handling , video , High ISO ,build quality just to name a few )
    Nowadays Cropped sensor cameras have gone better and better overtime in such a way that today someone can comfortably do a pro shoot with a cropped sensor dslr and get amazing result . I know FX will always be FX though.
    That being said I think the D500 is the new swiss army knife of Nikon DX category and after watching your video and after checking here and there I am definitely going for the D500 which will be the perfect companion of my D810 ! Cheers !
    PS: Guys don't get me wrong the D750 is the best value FX camera money can buy today, and I like it too !

  • @terrym45

    Have both. If I had to chose only one it would be the D500. The last shoot I went on to Arches NP. I used both bodies. The D750 with a wide-angle lens ( a big advantage) and the D500 with normal to telephoto. I much prefer the button layout on the D500. especially the Iso use with one hand, while shooting. I do wish the live view focusing were better. The touch screen was way to sensitive. I swear I would just think shoot and it would fire - what happened to "touch". Other little things I like on the D500 - closing the view finder with a lever, Round VF doesn't fall off. Lit buttons, fast shutter release for hand-held HDR, etc. Things I miss form the D750 - User modes (U1 etc.) although there may be a menu solution to that haven't explored it yet. On camera flash, jury is out on that one. BTW also had a D7200 gave it to my wife and sold her D7100 rio help pay for the D500. All are great cameras. Being a wildlife shooter 10 f/s, with n buffer Wow

    I had the same choice and went with the D750. I rented the D500 for piece of mind in my 2k purchase. The D750 had better detail and that is what sold me. The D500 focus is a lot better but for my shooting, the 750 was the winner. When it comes down to it for me, sharpness and detail rein supreme. They are both awesome cameras and it comes down to your purpose for what you are trying to capture. Enjoy you D500.

    Only complaint i have for my D750 is the AA filter. otherwise it's a great FF camera. as now i only have FX lens i can't go back to 1.5 crop in zoom range and aperture. if Nikon does a D750s in coming year with D500 goodies then will be perfect.

    • @terrym45

  • @terrym45
    @terrym45 8 лет назад

    Got some great comments so far. I have both and use both. I use the D500 the most because I primarily shoot birds and wildlife. After using the D500, I realized what I missed the most from the D300 and that was the controls. The controls and button layout of the D500 is far superior for my uses. It is so easy to adjust on the fly, in many cases with one hand, the D500 is more "Pro" because of the layout etc. The D750's layout is still very good and it gets a slight edge in high ISO. The focusing ability of the D500 is amazing. The D750 is no slouch. There something about the "look" of the image from the D750 that I love which I can't pinpoint. I like FX for wide-angle. If I could only have one? The D500 because that's what I do. Actually, you may like the D750 better. Though choice

    I personally would go for the D750, which I currently have, due to the Larger sensor and much more usable ISO. For me and my level work the D750 is amazing at lowlight for concert photography, Portraits for shadow recovery and Landscape for the larger dynamic range for example. All in all it really depends on what you are using the camera for, I would not get lost in the "Spec War" as they are both great cameras for different levels of work, but do keep in mind the laws of physics in regards to the photons of light do not change in thus why Full Frame cameras will always provide cleaner images especially to high ISO. I love my D750 and this is my humble opinion :)

    D500, since I'm primarily a sports shooter, it sounds as though it will give my D3s a run for the money. Had this come out when I bought the D3s used a couple years ago, I probably wouldn't have gone the FF route. I use a D7000 as my second body, keeping long glass on the DX and wide on the FX. I am seriously waiting to make sure there are no issues that pop up with the D500, and then it will be my next camera.

  • @hoppy760

    How do they feel when you hold it and use it? I am a DX shooter, D7000. Yes older camera but i am not making a lot $ shooting right now so no reason to upgrade. I shoot headshots, editorial and weddings here and there and nobody has ever complained except other photographers. With that said, I did headshots the other day for another photographer (serious hobbyists shooter) and he brought his D3s along. I shot about 50 frames with it and I love the way it feels and the sound of the shutter and all that good stuff. It feels like a brick, like a machine. It’s just feels like a more serious camera. That’s something I haven’t had since my F100 with vertical grip. Even my D200 feels better than the D7200 which is basically the same as the 7000. So for my next camera I am contemplating a D4 or maybe the D500 (which I haven’t held) or the D810. D850 too pricey for me. However I understand the D810 isn’t as fast at focusing.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  6 лет назад

      They feel about the same actually. The grip is a little better on both and maybe even a bit lighter. My best advice is to either go to a local store if possible to get hands on and maybe even rent to see if you like the d500

    The D750 is coming up to being 3 years old but even second hand D750s are still fetching well over £1,200 for just the bodies. People talk about the problems the camera has/had but that was with earlier models. Newer made D750s are trouble free as all the faults have been addressed in production. In a year or twos time how much will the D500 be worth? I Doubt if it'll hold its money like the D750. And will the D500 have its own set of problems in the future? They should of made it FX, then it would be the best camera available under £4,000 by a mile. Also it should of had 'Auto' mode like D750. I Like high end kit & bought the D750 because it had auto mode. I'm not a pro & never will be but want the best that I can afford & use. I Take photos in 'sport' mode of my football team, I dont want to be messing around with settings. The D750 does a great job with those!

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 лет назад +1

      Honestly, the D750 didnt have that many problems and if anything, firmware updates fixed most. Most cameras will actually hold their value, the D500 is an interesting camera at the price range but is selling well. It also comes down to lenses, for sports, the D500 is one of Nikons fastest cameras.

    I got the d750, after my d7100 broke. I shoot mostly at iso100, so low light performance is nice, but not critical to me. On the d500, only thing I will miss is the pop-up flash. I do a lot of slave flash photos when hiking around, so the built in flash reduces bulk of using cables, triggers or a mounted master flash on camera, and all the extra batteries. I suppose I could get those flash-q triggers you reviewed, but will lose ttl and cls - not critical, but nice to have.
    When you review the d500, please elaborate on the viewfinder. The main reason I got full frame was for the larger and brighter view. Otherwise I would have just gotten another d7100. The view finder of full frame cameras make them a joy to use and is an important factor.
    As primarily a landscape/nature photographer who hikes a lot, Video, focus speed, wifi/bluetooh, shutter speed, touchscreen, and high iso performance, don't carry much weight in my decision. If the viewfinder on the d500 is pretty much the same as the d7100, then I will skip he d500. The ultimate landscape camera - the d810 was just a bit too bulky for me, so I will probably skip the successor to the d810 too.
    I think the d500 is the obvious sports shooter camera. I've had good luck with the d750 at hockey games, but based on other reviews, the d500 is going to be superior with it's low light, fast focus, fast shutter, and higher pixel density.

    I photograph events, music, dancing, fashion, wildlife and landscape! the D500 is perfect for multi tasking!! a D750 will piss you off when the buffer chokes out at certain events! the AF system on the D500 (found on the D50) is SUPERIOR! plus if you do any night stuff, the light up buttons is so useful! and megapixels are SIZE! how big does people need to print?? the D500 is a bit sharper! minus that filter :) I'm wondering how many people here actually go out and photograph events etc??? instead of reading spec sheets at home! the D500 kicks ass on the move! and Snapbridge is a piece of crap :) as for light performance? get a nice SB flash! people complaining about lack of pop up on the D-500?? who wants to use them anyway for serious photograph? invest in a nice flash!!! its worth it :) im all over the place! for weddings, when you want to do those quick moving moments! like the groom carrying the bride and spinning around etc. the D500 will get that shot better :) not everything is still in photography :) D750 if your generally into still stuff and composing scenes! but if your on the move and busy! D500 will keep up with you

      Gibson Weasel I disagree. The D750 a great all around camera and I find to be very good for action/sports. I shoot international/Olympic level showjumping and eventing competitions, high goal polo like the US Open, and top horse racing...all which move quickly. The fps is great capturing action, especially at night under lights or in crappy stadium indoor lighting and very clear images. I just did a Imaging Resource Comparometer on the D500 and D750. I'm so confused! D500 is not only sharper but has better color reproduction. Could it be the Expeed 5 or lack of a low pass filter thats making the images sharper?

      The D750 still has buffer (and not "no buffer"), just not performing as well as the D500. Moreover, the D750 has lot to offer compared to the D500 besides "f/s and buffer". Cheers.

      Due to the lack of AA filter you can apply a lot more noise reduction on the D500 than you can with the D750, I know as I've tried both countless times. The un-edited RAW file of the D750 looks better, but the edited D500 RAW file is superior. There's a lot more to image quality than mere ISO performance.

  • @ruff1draft

    They both give good quality images. Besides there is no perfect camera. Just put decent lens with your camera and enjoy either the D750 or D500 for the experience you choose to have with them and bring your own unique photography to the world. That is what I am doing with my D5500.

    My opinion. If you're going to be doing mostly sports and flying birds get the d500, for everything else the d750 which you can get brand new for 400-500 dollars less and its an amazing camera. Go to flickr.com and search for the d500 and d750 groups, compare the pictures and decide which pictures you like better. I like the image quality on the d750 better however I will buy a d500 someday for sports and birds only.

      The Nikon D810 is already almost perfect. The Nikon D900 will have a new processor and the same autofocus of the D5. So, in the end... the difference is made by the lenses, not really by the new Camera. I save money to buy a good Nikon 600mm lens for wild-life. Back in the late 60's there was a goofy looking, small body electric guitar. Gradually it became the workhorse of blues and rock bands. By the 70's it was the most sought after status symbol a young guitarist dreamed of owning. And it was expensive.The ruckus this camera is causing, reminds me of that little guitar. Is this "little" crop sensor going to be the Les Paul of photography? Even respected camera review experts are scratching their heads in amazement.

    I own both, plus I have the D5 and the D810.
    The D5 and D500 feel, focus, and shoot like bolt action rifles....Everything about them feels professional.
    The lower the light the bigger the difference.
    Yes the D500 has better low light performance...Not night and day, but it is better.
    The D500 is easily Nikon's current best do all camera...By a wide margin.
    Even comparing the D810 with the D500 I feel nobody would notice the difference in IQ between the two.
    The D5 is great, but at that price point you could buy 2 D500s....
    Where does the D500 suck? Nowhere that I can see.
    The crop sensor has very limited wide angle lens choices...Which means if all you shoot is landscape work the D500 is probably not your choice.

    Snapbridge also can be a remote shutter release with Liveview, and if you don't want to you don't need to upload them to the phone just keep them in Camera. I'm bias as I have a D500 and love it but I think you wouldn't regret that purchase. You just need to get a decent ultrawide lens for 4K I opted for the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 (IF) DX II. and for a general everyday lens I got the AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 G ED DX good luck whichever you choose although I think your mind is already made up ;)

      It has only basic functionality. I've not tested to see how fast transfer speeds are as I prefer to keep them in camera. Hopefully this will improve in future updates but at least for me its very useful.

      D750. Great all around. It was my upgrade from the D7000. Great for landscapes, street and cityscapes...vacations (took mine to Europe) etc, and sports. Excellent low light. I've been credentialed shot/shoot international/Olympic level showjumping and eventing competitions, high goal polo like the US Open, and top horse racing...all which move quickly. The fps is great capturing action, especially at night under lights or in crappy stadium indoor lighting and very clear images. My main is D800 as i found it great for weddings, or go D810 and have the D800 as a backup instead, i just think that native ISO is appealing with church shots and darkinteriors where flash is not allowed and SS need to be higher...just really cant decide and its so painful to chose..D750 in UK=1000, D500 i can get at 1,400, P.S D800 is just lovely, cant fault it.

    Hi Eric Thank you for yet another interesting video. Nikon really created a monster of a camera with the D500, this camera reminds me of a saying from the first Jurassic Park movie when the old guy there said "We spared no expenses" and it feels like Nikon really through everything they have in their arsenal into this body. Its sad they waited so long for this camera to come out but it is what it is. Comparing it to the D750 is a natural thing to do as they sit roughly on the same price point. As a Nikon D750 user I have been looking it with a very close look and I cant stop being impressed with it but for me as a general user and event/portrait user I find FX body is better and as you said while the D500 does well in low light the D750 does better which is very important for me. The main feature I really like on the D500 is its AF system, I would appreciate a camera that can grab focus in low light and low contrast condition better which is a problem in event photography. Personally if I was in the market today I think I would still get the D750 as it is really a specialty sports/wildlife camera and I am waiting for the D750 replacement which probably will not come anytime soon as I hope it will have the D500 AF system.

      Yes, you can always use fx or dx lenses on a crop sensor. It will not effect the quality. But since the lens is on a crop sensor, the crop still applies.

    Real quick I've heard that some Nikon cameras have hissing issues with external microphones like the rode videomic pro. I'm hesitating to buy a Nikon camera after i saw some reviews of the D5200 giving off some hissing and made me rethink about what camera I should buy. Is it just a fixable software issue or is it Nikon cameras in general? Because Canon doesn't seem to have any of these issues. Thanks

      it all depends on what you are shooting, since you ask this lens probably sports. If you need it to shoot sports the d500 is the strongest here but keep in mind the d500 is NOT a full frame camera it is crop. If shooting anything else where you dont need speed, the d750 I'd choose.

    Eric, i have a d750 that i can switch to the dx mode, so my question is why would anybody want a dx camera, when you have it in a fx camera?

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  7 лет назад

      good question, but the answer is easy. Not everyone needs full frame, full frame is more expensive. Body and lens wise. DX camera are more affordable with more lens options. In my opinion, one should not be buying a full frame camera to shoot DX.

  • @KTMcaptain
    @KTMcaptain 8 лет назад +1

    Nikon is selling both cameras at the same price.
    one has better controls, features, and body.
    common sense, the other camera has to have something to put it in the same price category. which in this case is imaging.
    scientific testing thus far puts the d500 marginally better than the d7200 in low light and DR performance. still no where near the d750 or D610.
    full frame cameras fill a completely different role than crop sensors.
    imho, get the crop sensor for first camera. the nuances that make full frame better aren't appreciated unless you shot a crop sensor a lot and pick up the differences. so get a d7200. it's value is far better, and it performs within 1/3 stop of the d500 in DR and low light.
    full frame advantage allows for it to gather more information and take advantage of big beautiful lenses. but medium format is even better, soooooooo there is always the sunk cost argument.

      If you search on amazon you can find the D750 for much less than the D500. On Amazon Uk the D500 is at £1600-1900 while the D750 is at £1300-1400.

    Hi, I'm having a really hard time choosing between whether I should get a full-frame d750, or the crop d500. Is the d500 any good for landscapes? Do crop-sensors have an impact in landscape photography? Aiming for a more well-rounded camera, which ones the better choice? I'm new at this, really hope someone can give some guidance! Thank you

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  8 лет назад +1

      Sure the d500 is great for landscapes but mind you it has the crop factor. Personally, I would take full frame for landscapes so you can get the wider picture without being restricted. But it depends on your budget and lenses you can afford. Personally a D750 is what I went with

      +Nicolaas Strik everyone avoids this topic because d810 is stiill image quality king.ive no regrets i got d810 few months ago. the d500 is a awesome camera no doubts but you can be sure nikon plan the cameras so that they dont beat/compete with ones in price bracket above. i havnt seen a review yet claiming its better then d810 at 64 iso .its aimed at sport and high iso shooters which isnt the d810 market.the d500 to me is the best crop sensor and the need for full frame is less. but... i dont think they compete against eachother.if your considering d810 dont even look at d500.

    I respect your comments and most of them make perfect sens but you are missing the point. We all know about APSC vs FF differences and advantages.
    The D500 is surely great and the best APSC ever and a better body than the D750.
    BUT...20MPx is too much for a DX sensor (too high pixel density)
    A lens will "better resolve" the lower pixel density of a 24MP FF sensor which means that a given lens will produce sharper results (more DXO P-Mpix if you prefer) on a D750 than a D500.
    If you are not convinced check the sharpness results of the 85 1.8G on DXO for D7100 (15) and D750(21) or do your own tests as I did.
    Well....I don't know about you but for me, whatever the quality of the the D500, I want to get the sharpest results from my lens and will shoot 80% of my shots under 400 ISO so....
    Obviously this is my point of view, I might be wrong and I like to hear your point of view :)

    • @tonytfuntek3262
      @tonytfuntek3262 8 лет назад +2

      Exactly! Pixel density is a big issue when it comes to smaller sensors. Why else would medium format sensors still be the choice for landscape professionals? So unless you want to drop $45,000 on an H5D-200c medium format camera, full frame is the next best choice. If you need the fast FPS and extra reach of the D500…get it! If you are looking for superior results in the same price range….get the D750!
