    LOL..lots of expletives on this one Exigeous!! I feel this gameplay offering certainly warranted the frustration.

    Hope they'll do something with that scanning minigame, because it seems to be extremely frustrating. It also seem to have nothing to do with genetics, but that can probably somehow be explained by some sorcery-level technology could've been developed by the 34th century. Also, doesn't make sense we can use only one 'sampling vessel' or whatever they call it: as if I can't take two or three of them with me and change them whenever I sample different species.
    On the other hand, the need for sampling from several spatially separated populations to account for diversity is perfectly fine from the genetics point.

      Don't accept some shitty lore-related reason for bad game design. I can't believe this actually got a pass into a public release, but then again, it is FDev.

      And again about that sampling mechanics: it just ruins suspension of disbelieve (at least for me). FDev have always been very proud of the amount of science they put into ED, but this is just some magic scanning. It'd look much more plausible if I had to take a physical sample from a plant and kept it in a thermally-insulated container until I get to a genetics lab module in my ship for analysis. And that's one of the cases where ship interiors could be of use. Huge opportunity to deliver nice gameplay, but we end up with this minigame. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be savagely critical about FDev because they did a good job given the circumstances, but some features of the Odyssey look like FDev should have spent more effort on them.

    Shit, i didn't know you fade to black when getting out of the SRV! Why doesn't the front open and the steps fold down?

      There's zero entry or exit animations for any vehicles, land or space.

      @@_Digishade_ I understood the fade to black for ships because no ship interiors, but the SRV was designed especially for that. The steps are literally under our feet.
      Lazy bastards.

    As an explorer, I would want a bit more than a mini-game from scanning plants or minerals. Though a good mini-game would be nice (e.g. subsurface mining, deep core mining), the incentive for me to explore are the unique and visually interesting sights (e.g. Guardian and Thargoid sites, lagrange clouds). There are some great views that can be seen in other FPS titles such as Breakpoint and Destiny, or walking sims like Death Stranding. Should Odyssey mimic those titles? Maybe not to that extent, but at least give the explorer some cool (possibly jaw dropping) landscapes to see, not just some neon cactus-tumbleweed hybrid plant in a bland gray desert. Could also vary the terrain in a way that requires a bit of parkour or Tomb Raider style foot navigation.

    When doing the sampler mini game, don't click when you think they're perfectly lined up, click when they're about halfway lined up.

    I didn't mind the mini game that much when using a controller but they MUST fix the fact that you burn incomplete samples. Also we need a way to review what we've collected.

    I had fun driving my SRV around and scanning life. I had more luck with the genetic scanner than with my rifles (in the beginning...) The minigame is enjoyable nut not exactly thrilling. Might need some polish but I like it.

    The biggest issue I have with the idea of ship interiors and doing things inside your ship while inflight and such, is that it is against the Elite lore. For example, the Elite universe doesn't have artificial gravity. So moving around inside a spaceship while it is moving would cause all sorts of issues.
    I will confess that FDev seem to already be throwing out the lore with every chance they get. Just look at how they are seemingly making the station interiors for space stations in Odyssey that don't have spinning sections for gravity.

    Even if they polish the on-foot experience, I feel like Odyssey's moving away from why I play Elite in the first place. It would've been cool to have ship-interior walkthroughs; and I'll buy Odyssey if just for the upgrades to ship and planet visuals. But it looks like we'll have the same lack of diversity that we have with other game aspects (station control voices, mission types, docking bay interiors, etc.) and if I wanted to play an FPS, I'd be doing Halo or COD. Hats off to FDev for giving it a good shot, but I think I know how this is going to play out.

    They should charge 50,000 Arks to have a Ship Skin Art Designer DLC in game. That Genom scanner, did they poach the EA Madden Field Goal meter designer or something. If this is gameplay, I'll buy MLB The Show 2021 and learn Precision Pitching. I'm an explorer in ED and they need to remove the backwards step in the scanner if you miss the timing. Do that and it'll be more smoother. As it is right now, nobody will bother with it and avoid the entire section of the game.

    They should remove the minigame completely in my opinion, as the time involved in scanning the planet from space, landing on the planet, finding the lifeform, , then having to scan three time over long distances, isnt that enough time involved for what you get paid for doing all that ?

    cant whait for final release. Would be nice if the give us a second srv and that we can better outfirt the srv. hope the ground combat feels good and there is good mission variety and i hope the expand and imrpve multicrew. Cant whait to play when final release is out. Elite Dangerous is one of my favorite game. Hope my X52 Pro setting still works it takes very long to map it perfect so i can controll from it i mean map, external views and all functions.

      What do you mean by "final release"? Do you mean when this is production in say 4-6 weeks? It's very possible we'll get another SRV, that was leaked already. There's very little indication they'll update multicrew, possibly team based physical crew and we've already seen all the missions as far as we know.

      I fully expect Odyssey to fall flat on release. Maybe the game will be worth playing in a couple of years, assuming they don't abandon it.

    this scanning puzzle mini game is a deal breaker for me... scanning should be a quick and dirty work ! why they add a no sense game mechanic!! but traveling and exploration can take time to fund the good resource witch is more ED is good for, I don't get it, dont get me wrong I like where they going with Odyssey, but come on, the Game design are terrible

    I dont think ill buy odyssey. 1. There are no exiting / entry animations. 2. I think that it isnt really immerisve walking around a planet. I dont know why, it just feels like you aren't in a spacesuit. Maybe they should add an actual helmet that you can see through. 3. Paying 50 euros for a few plants with the addition of a nerve racking minigame? 4. I dont like the combat. You just have a hp system and hold left click while jumping 20 meters up. Also the stations are kinda lame. I really dont get why everything in this game ends up being a grindy not fun to play thing. I think star citizen will be the better option in the long term.

    I just want a fun combat mechanic...the scanning looks boring - i could see it for hacking or something but i dont care about plants and rocks NMS has way too much of that we need something better.

    Watching you learn this biology stuff was painful. Can't really blame you for it, the game doesn't explain it at all.
    The mini-game looks horribly hard and will really annoying in the long run. It is literally a copy of the worst of the mini-games from AmongUs.
    The fact that you have to take multiple samples from the same species a distance from each other looks good. The scan should however make it more clear to the player than just the weird coloring, maybe say the actual distance in meters that they have to travel away from it, or at least explain what the colors mean.
    The having to clear your sample thingy when going from an incomplete sampling of one species to another should also be better communicated. Maybe they want to make multiple sampling containers an upgrade? Or maybe they just don't think people will want to attempt sampling multiple species at the same time?
