Theorist, technology may be TOO good right now. For horror, I mean. Look at the rise of analog horror series lately to see what I mean. Most use outdated technology to tell their tales of horror. Why? Because today's tech makes it too easy. What do I mean? Well, sit back and prepare to be SCARED for the future of horror.

When you let MatPat talk without taking a breath for 15 minutes, he invents a new genre of horror.
It’s not new. Digital horror has been around a while. I recommend Morley Grove by Remy Abode!

@@mackenziewoloschuk7375 Coincidence?
I THINK NOT!
umm its called MORROR ( M for matpat and orror for Horror )
I always find it weirdly terrifying when phone companies advertise that their cameras erase "annoying objects" while showing footage of erasing people...
ME TOO I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE
That scares me
I’ve always thought that it was hilarious
LITERALLY.
Well its annoying asf when someones in your picture
I personally think that "it" being an AI is much less scary, than an actual person dong it. Imagine finding out that your own parent/sibling/best friend has deep faked images/video of them with/without you and stuff. That would definitely give me some creeps. Or what if it was an absolutely random person you've never met, with folders filled with pictures with you and them.
The erasure situation instantly reminds me of Stalin and how he had 'removed' people from photos.
That would be a stalker I guess
Okay, idea. A horror series set during lockdown, main character lives alone and has an auto-immune disease and is therefore super vulnerable. So they never leave the house, work from home, get all their food delivered and just generally never see people. They have a good sized group of friends they talk to over the Internet, probably discord. One by one, their friend group is replaced by something, be it an AI, a hostile entity or just a human impostor, which uses filters to disguise itself as their friends. The others all get grabbed outside their homes, which is why the main character hasn't been gotten yet.
Later, the main character starts to catch on and looks for more information and starts to find small bits of evidence that it's happening everywhere but, whenever he finds something it disappears, maybe the next day, maybe as he's looking at it, and, of course, the only people who aren't in on it are the ones who live alone and can't go outside, so they can only talk about it online, which is no longer reliable or safe.
Maybe even tie it directly to the plague, maybe the plague is somehow connected to these people being replaced
im boutta plagiarize tf outta this
The Plague is a cover to allow the lockdowns. You wouldn't need to make it explicit, people could infer that government fell first and the lockdown is facilitating the wider scale takeover.
@@goahdejen6176 same, this is such a good idea for a dystopia 😅
And then their Uber driver is an anti vaxxer and THATS how they die
Maybe the plague could just be a lie to stop people from going outside. Just being there to force people online to save them from getting abducted.
I imagine modern day horror being a situation where you can be in a video call with someone and start to suspect you aren’t talking to who you think you’re talking to
THATS FREAKING TERRIFYING
Like
Idk some random guy being on the phone like
"Hi Dave, how ya been?"
"Dave": I've been good, good... How about you?
" Well, yknow-"
Actual Dave: *walks up to him* Hi buddy! Who ya talking to?
*insert terror here*
@@IAmTerrestrial Wowie, what a great idea
I feel like that wouldn’t really have that scare factor though, because of how repetitive it is. Something that makes reality feel unreal, and makes you question your surroundings like what analog horror encompasses, would honestly make it a lot scarier. Like, our advancements weren’t enough, or the advancements we made caused our downfall that isn’t just some “robot takes over the world” bs. Something which makes you question your surroundings and what you already know, to believe you have control and be proven wrong, something I believe “All Tomorrows” by C.M. Kösemen captures almost perfectly
catfishing rates now explode
As someone with memory issues to begin with, AND random anxiety about being accused of a crime I didn't commit, this is probably the most terrifying thing I could ever comprehend.
Same. 😔
It happens
When I discovered that déjà vu is just your mind tricking you into thinking you’ve seen something before, I started questioning my own memory and wondering to what extent my brain could trick me into seeing what has never actually happened.
@@nyxie2877 Yeah I was thinking this week about how eerily unreliable our memories are. Not only can we change details of past things and mix up multiple memories and even exaggerate things in our head then keep those exaggerations as though they're concrete memory. I have literally accidentally tricked myself into believing I had a totally original idea cuz I forgot my inspiration for it, rediscovered it and was like, oh duh I didn't invent that at all.
I thought I was the only one that worries about that!!
I love how Matpat didn't just make a separate segment for the sponsor but actually implemented it in the video
MatPat’s interpretation of modern analog horror is basically just George Orwell’s 1984, but with some added aesthetic, and with a horror spin to it instead of an ideological one. The third act of the book played with the idea of whether things you experienced really happened and that enough gaslighting of reality can cause even the strongest individual to accept the lie they’ve been told, and reject the truth. Of course it also goes into government overreach, mass formation psychosis, and the dangers of authoritarianism and Big Brother, but that one part near the end it’s strikingly similar to how MatPat described modern analogue horror, which I guess would technically be called digital horror, but whatever.
I swear MatPat is about to make an actual Analog Horror now with this exact plot

This reminds me of the 2018 horror movie Cam (spoilers ahead), about a cam girl who finds herself replaced by an entity that looks and sounds just like her to the point of taking over her channel, but seems to only exist online. It's all about her online persona colliding with her offline life, and the sheer horror of seeing yourself on screen, seemingly live and acting in real time, and doing things you know you haven't done, and with no way to prove that's not you.
I have watched that feel asleep as soon as the stalker showed up
That was actually a decent movie. They should make one about a react channel and all of a sudden, they get a link to a video of them dying.
It wasn't a bad movie ngl
My guess is how to prove the clone isn't you is to show the clone being online and live posting while you're offline lol
at 14:00 that's exactly what i was thinking
I love this idea, and it’s not even entirely new. 1984 (and I’m sure many other literature) covered it as well, the idea of rewriting history.
funny how when I flipped through all my writing notes like 3 days ago, I came up with a very similar idea where reality is simulated in a way much scarier than the Matrix ever put it out to be. I named it Synthesia 1.
This is a great direction to take that in.
As soon as MatPat started talking about "modern analog horror" my mind instantly went to AI generated stuff, but instead of erasing people, I thought of them just putting things that aren't there instead and the histories could go to a paranoia state of "is it just the AI malfunctioning? is there really something there? is something messing with the AI?"
AI generated Wikipedia would absolutely maim society
The way I see it you can do a lot with it. You can make what seems like a normal video but then start purposely make glitches that makes the viewer begin to wonder if what they are seeing is real and string them along that way.
Or tell a story about how videos of the viewer are popping up that they don’t remember making and have it slowly hint that it is fake and that these videos are effecting their lives in a big way and there is nothing they can do to stop it as the AI or person making these fake videos have isolated them from everyone and discredited them enough that no one believes them leaving the person helpless as their whole life, whole world crumbles around them as they can do nothing but watch.
Or maybe make one where they find themselves on a website like “this person does not exist” and they begin to find hints that their whole world is fake and they are not the person they think they are and they come to find out through little glitches and clues that they are actually a deepfake of someone real and their whole life is a lie.
Just a couple ideas using todays tech with deepfakes and software
Brawl stars. Its already done the dake voice and face thing on a different body. Pretty neat :3
I was thinking more along the lines of “creatures that are just disturbing to look at in 4k HDR” but that works too
and you could also use the erasing idea and mix it with this one, like in this moment 12:27, you can still see matt leg's, thus creating this dillema of if that was added by AI or there was actually someone there, making you question if the information given is true or not.
Thank you matpat for keeping me awake for the whole night

i think modern analogue horror would probably be something similar to the movie missing which only takes place within the bounds of digital devices. the camera never swivels around to show a main character or for jump scares. it’s all just zooming in and out of different parts of the screen. honestly fantastic movie
Fnaf
What I was thinking when you mentioned that cameras are getting too good, is that the camera catches something that the character can't see, but the audience can. That could create a feeling of suspense, but at the same time, its already been done.
When you mentioned "AI voices" I started to think about a project of my mom. I have dozens of voice recordings from her zoom meetings and home videos that I desperately want to turn into an AI voice. I'm even learning the programs to do it. I think some people may look at this in a Frankenstein light of "how far are you willing to go to bring back a memory of the dead?" While I am just desperate to hear her say "I love you" or sing a song or read a bedtime story to the grandchildren that she never knew. I just want to keep her memory alive and I do think there would be potential in the horror genre of how far someone is willing to go.
i understand. mine died when i was 12, and all i had was a shitty voice mail recording on my minute phone. don't even really have pictures anymore. i get it
What you're doing is terrifying but also sweet.
@@goldenrosey4347 what is more terrifying is my instinctual belief that I can do anything if I would bother to study it for more than 5 minutes. My mad scientist's thoughts when meeting Lil Nas X's brother was "steal his DNA, make a clone" which I definitely do not know how to do yet. God, maybe I am Frankenstein but a better parent.
@@floridasavannah I mean you never know bro, maybe you'll be the one to discover cloning
Your comment reminded me a lot of Minerva's Den, where the central plot revolves around a grieving husband building an extremely advanced computer to essentially 'resurrect' his dead wife. He spends years feeding it recordings, photos, even anecdotes in an effort to perfectly simulate her, only to find that, once his project is complete, it can never be enough. Interesting to see that fiction become reality.
The idea of a person being erased is VERY similar to a movie that had the premise of the main protagonist who lost her son in a "stranger danger" kidnapping. But then everyone around her starts to forget and act as if she never even had a son. And all evidence of him is gone. But she is positive she had him. I really liked the movie. That's... Dang. That's horrifying. I got chills just from you talking about it. If someone made a series like this I would watch the heck out of it, that's a terrifying ly good idea
I think a good example of modern "analog" (digital?) horror would be the Simulacrum series. You find/are given someone else's phone, and then need to figure out what happened to them by looking through their social media, talking to friends, etc.
This sounds very similar to ‘A Normal Lost Phone’
I love Simulacra! Personally I think the first one is better than the second cause we don't know what a 'simulacrum' is yet. I haven't played either myself yet tho, watched Markiplier play it. I did play a similar, free appgame called 'Sara Is Missing', which is pretty scary too!
@@idkbalvan6303 Same! There is also the third Simulacra that came out in October of 2022! I've played the whole series, and I can say confidently that the first two were much better than the third. I don't know what it is about the third one, I just didn't enjoy it too much; well, I still DID enjoy it. Perhaps it wasn't as immersive for me as the others?
yheaa, i thought of that too when he started talking abou digital horror
@@crown8326 THANK YOU I didn't know they had a third one out!
The thing about stranger danger is that statistically, kidnappings by strangers are quite rare. You're far more likely to be kidnapped by a family member, someone you're dating, or someone you trust in general.
While it may not be the 'worst', of all the many negative things that the previous generations did to set up the Xers and early Millennials, Stranger Danger has to be one of the most insidious - because of sensationalized and inflated statistics, and a manufactured panic, we were raised to see strangers and dangerous... but literally *everyone* is a Stranger until you've met them, and if you see them as dangerous, you won't meet them, thus keeping you isolated from them. In a generation where technology was being built that should have brought people *together* and helped us communicate *better* as a society, we were being told how dangerous other people were, and how we should avoid getting close or letting our guard down, thus isolating us into our little bubbles of people whom we knew well enough to believe we could trust, nucleating into the modern echo chambers of today.
You can't trust 'them'. 'They' are strangers, and thus are dangerous to you. The more you hear that, the less you even think of 'them' as people. And then our elders have the sheer gall to complain that people don't 'just talk to each other anymore' - after they spent *decades* telling us not to do exactly that: Don't Talk To Strangers. I can barely make an appointment over the phone because it's been so hard drilled into me to Never Give Your Personal Info To A Stranger. Don't Talk To Strangers. Stranger Danger.
*heavy sigh*
@@HeavyMetalMouse Amen. I had a roommate once who was (and probably remains) so paranoid that one time I heard her refuse to give personal information over the phone to someone *she* had called, for the specific purpose of some sort of customer service help thing that she needed. This same person also tried taking the chip out of her bank card because she thought it was a tracking device.
Granted, he has had some real world experiences to back up her paranoia, but still...
Not anymore in the future 😈
Absolutely this! And it's not just in kidnapping but being harmed emotionally or physically too..the most dangerous people statistically are those you believe you can trust not strangers.

14:09 and based on how slow the legal system is it will be at least 100 years before laws are in use to protect against this.
That "Magic Eraser" seems like a good digital horror story. People and things being erased from photos causing them to disappear IRL seems like an easy enough premise.

Your idea of future horror really reminds me of a recent book I read, 1984. If you haven’t read it I would recommend that you do. It talks about a high power person changing history books and past writing to delete people from history or make them seem like a higher power. Sorta sounds like your theory Matt
bro said “this is literally 1984”
I'm currently reading a similar book by Ray Bradbury called Fahrenheit 451. I won't go too in-depth, but basically they changed it to where, instead of putting fires out, firemen have instead started them by burning books. The first fireman was, as the government told everyone, Benjamin Franklin. The premise of changing history beyond recognition is truly terrifying. The worst part is, everyone believes it. It's truly a good read l, and I believe you may enjoy it, given you haven't read it already.

"There wre things Man was not meant to know...not meant to see. What happens when Man's technology see what wanted, needed to remain unseen?" the trailer almost writes itself
@@1313puredragon I could also see one of the villainous characters being a morally bankrupt scientist or the such. Trying to get a result with a process he knows is unethical and fatal to the pawns he uses!

14:48 Funny he says this, because a few months back I was trying to prove to my sister we had went to a place before but they never were able to remember it. I ended up having dozens of pictures of everything around us, as well as previous knowledge about the place. But when I went to look for pictures they had and even I had. I was in none of them, I went back to look at other potential trips that my parents might have been in. And there qere always pictures of them and my extended family in those pictutes. But never me, it was like trying to porve something, but the pictures couldn't help you. Anyway I lost the argument because I couldn't back it up with anything. It was definitely one of the weirdest experiences in my life
I think there's also a possibility of people making horror stories based on filters, whether only being able to see a monster when a certain filter is active or some "influencer" looking nothing like what they portray themselves as because of the filters they use.
my memory being gaslit and taken advantage of is legit one of my biggest, deepest fears. i have adhd and besides the attention disregulation, my memory suffers the most. i can forget something i said 2 seconds ago, no exaggeration. i often just have to rely on the people around me to remember certain things. being told something happened when it didnt or being told something didnt happen when it did would be crippling
Maybe that’s why my memory is so bad… somehow I never even thought of the possibility that I might have adhd.
Also, my dad gaslights me all the time and it’s literally driving me insane
I’m the same. It’s very upsetting specially when my mind is so selective there’s portions of my childhood I can’t recall but can recall a random mundane Thursday 10 years ago with vivid clarity. It’s a scary premise that someone can use that against me and have to rely on something flawed to scape.
This. I also have adhd, and while it's primarily a regular disorder, a lot of people don't consider the information processing impairments that it has. Conditions w information processing disorders are more prevalent than people think and lots of everyday things cause it temporarily.
Had a little too much to drink? Too much caffeine? Haven't slept in 36 hours but are driving anyway? The streets were empty a moment ago but now you've swerved to hit a lamppost. Or there's someone sitting in the passenger seat and you aren't sure when they got there or how long they've been talking to you. Maybe you're walking somewhere and you're not sure how you got there, you only know that you did

I think the gaslighting element of this horror is the most prominent part. I'm surprised to see nobody talking about Simulacra the game, which more or less does this genre of horror that Mat describes. It basically starts with you the player finding a missing girl's phone, and you go through it trying to solve why she is missing. (Spoiler Alert) The AI took her and her identity, with it posting photo realistic pictures of her on her social media, as well as captions, voice notes and messages to her friends at the end which obscures the truth that she is long gone. It erased her and replaced her as a simulacrum of her that nobody online knew about except for you the player. It's basically like an AI version of an Alternate, except it doesn't drive you mad, it just erases the real you from reality.

That could actually be like a pseudo-analog horror where old tapes from the past reveal horrifying new secrets
Combining analog horror and a giant pixel advert, well played
He sold out just to make money and spewed out a video that is not even a theory, it's just buzzfeed again

Came back to this video because, after the release of volume 4, I think The Mandela Catalogue may be heading in this direction 👀
It's already happening, it's so cool that Mattpat also thought that people would he using ai technology for something bad
Don’t Worry Darling is a really good example of a modern analog horror. It deals with our time but with some tech that is a little bit out of reach. Its uncomfortable vibe is amazing and really gets you in on noticing things that are wrong.
I thought it was set in the 60s, lol.
Harry styles acting was the ony thing wrong in that movie.
@@tomb8936 LOL-
The movie was a meh.
@@tomb8936 I cry.
I think the movie “Nope” by Jordan Peele represents this [edit:this being new, high def, cheap cameras] really well. Never using old grainy footage, but playing on innate fears and obscuring the monster just out of view
yes it was really interesting how much I wanted to see the alien but looking at it means that you will be eaten. The idea of avoiding cameras and the hyper visibility that exists today would be an interesting angle to take with horror
The fact i instantly recognised the image in this videos thumbnail from the McGrady tapes just shows how much the Mcgrady tapes is stuck in my head. you should make a video on them Matt
So are you going to make a Modern Analog Horror Series or what I desire an existential crisis Matt
AHHH YESS more VHS horror. Bring me back to that time sitting in front of the TV watching Poltergeist scared out my brains 🥴😂

With how many theories MatPat has made, If he made his own horror series, I'd be down to watch
That ad transition was so smooth that I had to do a double take

That's literally what "Ghost in the Shell" is about. But that movie treated it like a terrible and distant distopia. Nowadays we are not even surprised by it, and I'm really scared about this fact
Honestly if I were to make a series nowadays. I would record and add things that never happened, like a monster in the background or eyes in darkness but only visible once the characters enhance the images. Like adding a stalker into childhood images, or maybe having the character see a murder happen in the middle of the street where cameras were present but just captured you screaming alone. There's a lot of potential honestly.

The fact that Mat got sponsored by Google is impressive
It’s not impressive at all. Nor is it anywhere close to being the first time they’ve sponsored a video.
i mean he does work for google so
Google sponsors him alot
As far as know he got sponsored by google at least 3 times
I know, right? It's really impressive that Google got MatPat to do an ad for them
This was actually...a really good video. Like, more so than usual. This was a GREAT video. I love these kinds of "workshop" videos, where people discuss how we could do existing processes differently. It's nothing shorter than an awesome discussion. Hope to see more spooky videos like this in the future!

That's terrifying; a world where you can't even trust your own memories. The game in question could introduce a premise, and something changes later on with such precision that you start to doubt yourself if it's you or the game. Fear here is anxiety-based and would stick around for a while.
9:30 | That is called the uncanny valley, it’s triggered when your brain recognizes the creature on screen but it’s mutilated or malformed so that it doesn’t fully fit to what the brain thinks it is.

14:15 this really reminded me of an episode from an old show i used to watch called Sarah Jane's Adventures, where in that episode one of the characters get erased from existence, and the one character that still knows of the erased character is basically gaslit by everyone else around her. You could easily twist that into a horror show.
I'm intrigued, tell me more. Please elaborate.
@@AmandaDixson The Sarah Jane Adventures is a kids show spin off from Doctor Who (Sarah Jane was one of the earlier doctors companions), so if you have a passing interest in Dr Who it's worth a watch.

What Mat believes Analog Horror in the future actually reminded me, oddly enough, of the series Bleach, because one of the story arcs is all about the main character dealing with everyone else having their lives edited by someone, and he’s the only one who is left normal. Of course, in his eyes he’s the only one living a “true” life. But when he’s the only one, does that make his life the real “false” one? When reading it, that part really struck my with a feeling of dread, the same dread I imagine the future analog horror Mat talked about would probably aim for.

Because he is just generated by an AI?
Most of the stuff you talked about kind of describes the design on "A Scanner Darkly" where a guy is stuck in a high-tech disguise where everything blurs together after he goes into a trippy drug hole, so nothing he looks a can be taken as real.
