I love the way the Mayor nicely got that reporter together that asked about how long it would take to rebuild the bridge. "Listen, we shouldn't even be having that discussion right now. There are people in the water that we have to get out."

The crazy part is, like 4-5 cars crossed right before it hit. It almost looked like no one was on it when it got hit. I hope they find everyone quickly.

This reminds me of the Tampa Sunshine Bridge collapse. It will take months to a year for the bridge to be rebuilt. I sincerely hope there were not a lot of people on the bridge at that hour.

What a tragedy. The question is how did this happen? The captain of the ship needs to be held accountable.
Looks like it lost power two times before the striking the bridge, Captain dropped the anchor, but it was too late, those large ships need pilots and tugboats to assist the ships under bridges and port entries. This was just a matter of time if they don’t correct these procedures .
To answer the reporters question. In Japan it would take 2 years...in the US 20 years. It took 6 years to add an HOV lane I-64 in Chesapeake VA.

Sometimes the reporters just ask the stupidest follow on questions after they've been told that search and recovery is the focus and they are asking about the boat and the pilot.
They are asking because that’s a very serious question. Only a handle full of individuals can do these kind of questions. Law enforcement doesn’t do water rescue! They need to board the ship! Especially when they heard from the pilot himself.
This is so horrific, praying for all involved and hopefully all will be found alive and returned to their families. So very sad .

This was totally preventable but those in charge will still let shit happen unfortunately..
The problem is that once a car is in the water the power windows fail in a few seconds as the electrical parts short in salt water. Cars should still have handles to roll windows down manually in such an emergency. Current car windows don’t shatter easily even when hit with a hammer.

I saw an 18 wheeler and a couple of cars driving over the bridge and I was paying they made it to the other side. Thats so sad

It is a toll bridge. The tolls for both directions is only on one side of the bridge.

So you think counting cars tells you? How many people are in each car? You don't know, I'm sure they looked at how many vehicles had hit the ez pass reader, that doesn't mean everyone was driving exactly 55 and only one person per vehicle. Fyi, there's no reader on the exiting end.

How can that ship hit that bridge the way it did and the ship is still afloat. I crossed that bridge many of time. I never like that bridge it would always move. Special on a windy day. I also fished directly under that bridge for rock fish. Those pillars are huge.

I believe the ship lost power a couple of times before striking the bridge so this why they need tug boats to assist these ships thru our ports . But they didn’t .. this is totally preventable..

We are definitely not prepared for a disaster because there are too many variables to deal with; assemble an investigation & rescue team to access the problem, then request the proper team or organizations. The only ones that react the best with what they have, are the fist responders. They do not expect any survivors, so for now, they are assembling a way to begin their search and assessment of this horrible accident.
Most cities have a harbor pilot that helps docks the ships because they know the waters in the area.Was this the case or was the person driving the ship steered by a foreign or ignorant who didn`t know what he was doing.

When they knew the power on the boat was faulty (one reporter said the lights were going out and back on multiple times)-why didn't they drop anchor? It may be my eyesight, but it looked almost too big to make it under the bridge.

Some recent video shows several vehicles passing over right before impact. Any situation one hour either way from this tragedy.....its devastation in the multiple hundreds. No question.
